Polyvinyl Record Co Vinyl, CD & tapes from this label at Norman Records
Founded in 1994 by Matt Lunsford and Darcie Knight as a fanzine to celebrate the DIY musical communities of their home state of Illinois, Polyvinyl Records has morphed over the years to become one of the most influential labels in the U.S. underground.
Initially the imprint specialised in emo - Braid and Rainer Maria released a number of their early records through Polyvinyl. Polyvinyl’s Year Zero arguably arrived in the form of American Football’s eponymous 1999 debut LP. A hugely influential record in the worlds of emo, post-rock and math, this release signalled the beginning both of Polyvinyl’s ascent into indie’s major leagues and of their relationship with American Football’s Mike Kinsella (Owen, Joan Of Arc, many others).
While the 2000s saw plenty more Polyvinyl releases that fell in line with what they’d been doing previously, this decade also saw the label also made significant forays into art-rock, alt-rock and punk. These included of Montreal’s seminal ‘Hissing Fauna, You Are The Destroyer’ (2007) and Japandroids’ debut LP ‘Post-Nothing’ (2009). The label has continued to broaden its horizons throughout the 2010s, maintaining a rock core while also casting its net wide enough to catch albums by art-music savant Xiu Xiu and alternative J-Poppers Kero Kero Bonito.
