System
Plus

For their new album Plus, Danish tinkerer trio System (Thomas Knak, Anders “Dub Tractor” Remmer and Jesper Skaaning) spent a couple of years turning sensitive arpeggibro keyboardist Nils Frahm’s source material into something likable. Various iterations of incandescent ambience, elegantly sculpted around damp and clicky digital processes, ensue.

Spirit Fest
Anohito

It’s what Spirit Fest (Tenniscoats’ Saya & Takashi Ueno, Markus Acher and Cico Beck (The Notwist and others) did next. The supergroup’s second album Anohito is a sweet and engrossing indie charmer, plodding along with affectionate vocals, trickling guitarverb and melancholy motifs aplenty.

múm
Menschen am Sonntag - Live in Berlin

As mum return to Berlin for their third time soundtracking the seminal German silent movie Menschen am Sonntag, the band’s Morr Music label has seen fit to release recordings taken from the previous two performances of their score. This 10" features exactly the sort of glitchy-yet-chest-swelling cinematic ambiences that one would expect mum to contribute to such a project.
  • Vinyl 10" (MM159LP)

Örvar Smárason
Light Is Liquid

Twenty years after co-founding múm back in 1997, Örvar Smárason at last takes a dip solo with the rather trippily-titled Light is Liquid. Órvar’s touch in múm is traceable in the brittle melancholy, twee cuteness and rattling early 2000s bedroom electronica beats of these songs - especially the two featuring Sillas. But the album also reaches further into graceful synthpop territory.

B. Fleischmann
Stop Making Fans

The record’s almost called Stop Making Sense, there’s a song on it called ‘We’ve Heard The Talking Heads Talking’ and the cover looks like a still from the video for Hot Chip’s ‘One Pure Thought’. Needless to say that B. Fleischmann’s latest LP is a smart, fun and danceable album. The indietronica here comes with more backbone than much of the genre’s fare and is counterbalanced by plaintive electronic torch songs like ‘There Is A Head’ and Gloria Amesbauer collaboration ‘The Pros of Your Children’.

Sin Fang, Soley & Örvar Smárason
Team Dreams

Team Dreams is the product of a rather eccentric collaborative working procedure, in which Orvar Smarason, Soley and Sin Fang agreed to make one song per month throughout 2017, with the twist that each song had to be crammed into just three days of work. The Reykjavik gang are such pro operators however, that this process has borne fabulous results! And here they are. Team Dreams is released by Morr Music.

ISAN
Glass Bird Movement

With their first album in six years, original odd couple duo ISAN remind us why theirs is a name which is highly regarded in the right kind of electronica circles. The pair have been making low key under the radar music for nigh on two decades and 'Glass Bird Movement' promises to explain why their music has been compared to the likes of Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin and Ulrich Schauss. Get on board.

Spirit Fest
Spirit Fest

Spirit Fest is an expanded form of the wonderful Japanese group Tenniscoats, wherein the two Coats are joined by Markus Acher and Cico Beck of Notwist, and Matt Fowler of Jam Money. Recorded in Munich in winter, Spirit Fest is a typically lovely recording from this personnel. Released by Morr Music.

Lali Puna
Two Windows

Lali Puna are back after a seven year gap which saw the departure of founding member Markus Acher. The others seem to be continuing in a business-as-usual like manner though with an album of lush and focused electronica. There's guests too including DNTEL's Jimmy Tamborello and harpist Mary Lattimore.

Sequoyah Tiger
Ta-Ta-Ta-Time

Sequoyah Tiger is a project of Leila Gharib, also of Barokthegreat and Bikini The Cat. The Ta-Ta-Ta-Time EP is mostly electronic (plus Gharib’s voice), but nevertheless it almost sounds like a set of classic 60’s pop, only updated and refracted through Gharib’s artistic sensibility. 12” vinyl release on Morr Music.

Soley
Ask The Deep

Available as six panelled digipak CD with mini poster or gatefold LP with download code, on Morr. Ask The Deep is Icelandic musician Sóley Stefánsdóttir’s (or simply Sóley) sophomore album. Minimalist darkened pop songs, with hints of Dead Can Dance instrumentations and nods to Phillip Glass. Sóley is equally capable of picking you up as she is at pulling you down.
  • Vinyl LP (MM138LP)
  • CD (MM138)

Soley
Endless Summer

Written over a period of a year, Icelandic musician Soley is back after collaborating with her long time friend Albert Finnbogason to give us a full length entitled Endless Summer. Soft and gentle piano notes flow under the sound of her throaty vocals to allow the music to enter your ears and caress your brain. Available on Vinyl LP and CD.
  • Vinyl LP (MM154LP)

Pascal Pinon
Sundur

Pascal Pinon’s third album is a truly serene and reflective one. Themed around the two sisters’ first separation from each other, whilst Jófríður went on tour with her other band, Samaris, Ásthildur stayed in Amsterdam to study. Written whilst apart and during brief encounters in Iceland and the Netherlands and then recorded in two days after 1 and a half years, the evocative and heart-wrenching nature of the situation is woven into this record.

Future 3
With And Without

If you thought the dudes in Animal Collective had bizarre aliases, you clearly aren't familiar with Future 3: comprised of Anders "Dub Tractor" Remmer, Thomas "Opiate" Knak and Jesper "Acustic" Skaaning, one might expect something slightly more pulverising from the trio. Actually, their music is politely and sufficiently downtempo, treating all good things in moderation. Future 3 haven't released a record since 2001, and their second record, 'With And Without', offers more floaty, ethereal electronica vibes with moments of playful synth pop to keep things moving.

Rayon
A Beat Of Silence

The latest release from Rayon, aka Markus Archer, aka singer of The Notwist. Though A Beat of Silence is a quiet and considered record, several of the numbers here create ambient textures via the use of organic rather than effect-laden instrumentation. See how the title track and ‘Dots’ bring about a feel of gradual motion not through delay pedals but through careful layering of marimba, vibraphone and piano. Out on vinyl and CD through Morr Music.
  • Vinyl LP (MM152LP)
  • CD (MM152)

Sin Fang
Spaceland

Sin Fang’s Spaceland is glistening R&B electronic pop with a deep yet ultimately joyously freeing rumination that you can imagine working closely with Jónsi and Alex Somers would bring. On one hand heavy bass and hi-hat bangers, the other delicate and vulnerable. Featuring Jónsi, Sóley, Jófríður Ákadóttir and Farao.
  • Vinyl LP (MM149LP)
  • CD (MM149)

Slow Steve
Adventures

Debut full-length as a solo artist from Rémi Letournelle (formerly of Fenster), under the name Slow Steve. Adventures is a synth-driven pop album of ‘proper songs’, rather than the jams of his earlier work. The sound is maybe a little nostalgic, but it is also catchy and lovely and fun. Out on Morr Music.

Mikael Lind
Intentions and Variations

Iceland resident Mikael Lind goes deep into ambient territory with Intentions and Variations, stripping out the beats in favour of long-delay piano / viola and electronic manipulations. Compositions ebb and flow between quiet solemnity and thick hovering haze, with fairly gorgeous results. Vinyl release on Morr Music.

Masha Qrella
Keys

Masha Qrella’s new record vanquishes the shyness that has played a part in some of her earlier music, replacing it with an emotional forthrightness that bewitches. Keys sings, in detail, about Qrella’s inner life, over subtle electronically-tinged pop songs. Cool, noirish stuff. Out on Morr Music.

Iggy Pop / Tarwater / Alva Noto
Leaves Of Grass

An unusual release here: Iggy Pop gruffly intones 7 poems from American old master Walt Whitman, while the duo of Tarwater and prime digital minimalist alva noto provide energetic and abstracted soundscapes in the background. A strange trip, unlike much that any of these artists have done before: nice! 12” in an embossed sleeve, on Morr Music.

Benoît Pioulard
Noyaux

Noyaux follows up Benoît Pioulard’s recent release for ambient overlords Kranky with this new full-length on Morr Music. Four tracks stretch themselves out over the record, each one relating to a family member. I guess Pioulard must like his family, as these are beautifully warm pieces of droning ambience.

Soley
Don't Ever Listen

Don’t Ever Listen is an EP that follows up on Soley’s recent second album Ask The Deep. The tracks here were originally demos for that album: consequently, they feel very close, intimate and direct. The Icelandic songwriter performs entirely solo here, apart from an audible appearance from her cat. 10” EP on Morr Music.

Ms. John Soda
Loom

Ms. John Soda are a German duo made up of Stephanie Bohm and Micha Acher. Acher has played with The Notwist among others so it’s probably not surprising that they make a kind of indie-electronica hybrid. Loom is their third album and first recording since 2006’s Notes and the Like which was critically lauded.
  • CD (MM132)

Fenster
Emocean

Fenster’s new record is the soundtrack to Fenster’s new film, Emocean. The band put the indie sci-fi picture together themselves, and from the sound of this musical accompaniment, it is probably quite a stylised, psychedelic production. Fenster’s third record of groovy indie is released by Morr Music.

Slow Steve
Steps

6 Track EP, available on 12” vinyl or CD from Morr Music. Rémi Letournelle is Slow Steve. With lofi, fuzzy synthesizers, clanky distorted percussion and everything lovingly understated, you can see why they draw comparisons to Ariel Pink or Air. Like a pop song by Moby, there is something inherently sad in all of it as well.

Aloa Input
Mars Etc

Munich trio Aloa Input drop their second album following 2013’s ‘Anysome’ and it’s a further refinement of the tuneful angularity of the debut, blending drawled vocals, bulky rhythms and elegantly intertwined bass and guitar. Not a million miles away from Franz Ferdinand’s rebooted post-punk, all told, but there’s an intriguing echo of cultish US slackers Swell in there as well.

The Dodos
Individ

Some new sounds from The Dodos. Individ is the latest record from these two San Fran men. Packed with vocal hooks and luscious harmonies, straight ahead indie-rock riffs and relentless drums, these little pop tunes are more than the sum of their parts. They've got bits of Belle & Sebastian, The Beta Band and Hot Chip - pretty expansive sounds from the two of them. Out on CD from Morr Music.

Obo
Innhverfi

This guy has toured with Sigur Ros and Jonsi but don't hold that against him. This is understated stuff full of piano twinkles and folky guitars and hushed vocals. More in common with Kings of Convenience than any sky scraping post rockers. Lovely, fluid, darkly insidious folk music with nods all the way back to Nick Drake and all the many melancholic folk pickers in between.

Soley
Kromantik

Soley is the solo project of Seabear's Sóley Stefánsdóttir. Primarily known for gentle pop tunes, here she does the thing that many people seems to be doing right now which is an album of piano music. This is a deep, dark cinematic work with only the merest traces of vocals. One to put on when it is late at night and raining outside.

Mum
Smilewound

Múm are up to album number six now, a little different to how they started, a little bit just the same, too. Certainly Smilewound delivers some bonafide pop moments - none more so than the tune Kylie Minogue lends her pipes to. Generally a few layers are getting stripped away, here. An Morr Music release on CD and nice gatefold LP.
