Ginger Johnson and His African Messengers
Ginger Johnson and His African Messengers made a glorious, joyful sound with their extra-percussive version of highlife, and nowhere more so than on African Party, now seeing reissue release on Freestyle Records. This stuff, recorded in 1967, really drives forwards: you will enjoy this with your mind and your feet, I assure you.
Brian Auger is one of those jazz guys who has managed to have a double career: one as a respected piano / keys player and band leader in his own right, and another phantom career as the source of countless groovy samples for use in hip-hop tracks. Back to the Beginning… Again compiles both favourite classics and special rare cuts for a remarkable double LP set of music. On Freestyle.
The Black Feeling series is up to release number three. The concept is that new cover version material is presented as obscure vintage cover version material: clever eh? Anyway, this 7” single is a Sampler of the full record, featuring two tracks supposedly performed by The Manuel Azevedo Quartet & Esperanto. On Freestyle.
A double LP compilation of the works of Brian Auger, spanning a generous 50 years, from the 1960’s right up until some 2013 material. Auger has found his tunes used fairly widely as sample fodder for hip-hop and electronica, so some of these sounds may be familiar. Gatefold 2LP on the Freestyle label.
Kalbata and Mixmonster recorded 'Congo Beat The Drum' between worlds: it got made in their studio, which is based in Israel, and also in Kingston. The result is dub from Israel by the way of Jamaica, which is a pretty niche mix! The track has been well loved and gets the remix treatment from giddy dubstep genius Kahn. There's also an instrumental version for you to mess about with.
Total relaxation from Kalbata & Mixmonster. Congo Beat the Drum is the full length collaboration from these two dub heads. Made using all analogue equipment and mind set, this record is stone cold groove instigator, in the vein of Tubby, Scientist and Studio One. The combination of a clear vision from these two producers and a multitude of legendary guest vocalists make for some outrageous dancehall n' dub rhythms. Out on vinyl LP and CD from Freestyle.
