Warp’s dancey offshoot Arcola are no doubt proud to bring you this EP by an artist known only as LEVL. Their trade is drum & bass… with a twist. A big twist really; the breaks and other staples inhabit heavy, uneasy atmospheres of delay, reverb, discordant drones and grain. Spook & bass. Produced by Joe Baker, Dylan Brownswood and Felix Krone AKA Forest Drive West, DB1 and Felix K.

London based producer Lukid has been pretty quiet the last few years. Having had EPs and LP out through Ninja Tune, and Actress’s Werk Discs he returns with an EP on Arcola bringing back his melted deconstructed rhythms and warped otherworldly synthetics that would please fans of Rezzett, OPN and the likes.

Basic Rhythm
Dough Boy / Can't You See

Up for some gritty grime haunted by the ghosts of pirate radio? Because London’s Basic Rhythm (a.k.a., East Man) has it in spades, as usual. Here it’s a pair of tunes for Arcola, housed in a swishly foiled, die-cut outer sleeve. ‘Dough Boy’ is massive stuff. You’ll hear the word “dough” many times. Flip ‘Can’t You See’ is just as muscular, but warmer and more generous with the pads. Fab stuff.

The Doubtful Guest
Voyage To Blacklantis

Nowt has been heard from The Doubtful Guest in over a decade, but she returns now with the Voyage To Blacklantis EP. The breakcore super-pace has been jettisoned here for a suite of ambient electronics, with deep watery bass and woozy synth chord modulations. What a way to break a silence! 12” on Arcola.

Bone Head
Soft Power

Having previously worked as one half of DVA Damas and sitting on the imaginary dividing line between techno and post-punk, Los Angeles-based Joe Cocherell unveils his new solo project Bone Head and its debut release Soft Power on Warp subsidiary Arcola. Four tracks of minimal techno and insurrectionary spirit.

Primitive Art
Crab Suite

Arcola Records is having a good 2018. The label has already scored hits with drops from Nkisi, Jamal Moss, Basic Rhythm and more. Primitive Art’s Crab Suite EP maintains their good form into the second half of the year. This is a brilliantly mucky affair, with various soundsystem cross-pollinations (dub techno, dancehall, Reggaeton) pulled apart by techniques from the world of industrial techno. Shrouded in reverb, delay and distortion, tracks like ‘Sequrity’ and ‘Recall Your Bones’ nod simultaneously to Basic Channel, Arca and Shackleton.
