The Durutti Column
Love in The Time Of Recession

'Love In The Time of Recession' by The Durutti Column was originally released in 2009. The title alludes to the recession that followed the global financial crisis of the previous year. Two standout cuts here are ‘In Memory of Anthony’, a tribute to the late Factory Records supremo Tony Wilson who died in 2007, and the instrumental ‘More Rainbows’ ,which sees Vini Reilly’s guitar complemented by the electric piano of his girlfriend Poppy Morgan. Other than that, it's, y'know, The Durutti Column - nicey nicey.

Frank Black
The Cult Of Ray

‘The Cult Of Ray’ was the third solo LP by Frank Black, aka Black Francis of the legendary Pixies. It was originally released in 1996. Its sound is akin to that of ‘Bossanova’ and ‘Trompe Le Monde’-era Pixies. It features some great tunes, notably ‘You Ain’t Me’ and the sublime warped soft-rock of ‘I Don’t Want To Hurt You (Every Single Time)’.

Gene
Libertine

'Libertine' was the final album by Britpop collective Gene. The band were most well-known for taking on the sound previously championed by the Smiths, and although they painstakingly removed some elements of originality and passion from the template Gene have arguably aged much better due to boasting a singer who hasn't become a kind of musical Jim Davidson in the intervening years. This is a 2xLP reissue on Demon.

Gene
Yours For The Taking - The Best Of Gene

Marking the 25th anniversary of the release of their debut studio album, overlooked British indie act Gene present a new greatest hits compilation, Yours For The Taking. Emerging during the height of Britpop and drawing comparisons with classic British bands such as The Smiths and The Jam because of Martin Rossiter’s literate lyrics, they faded out by the early Noughties but not before notching up ten UK Top 40 hits, all of which are included here.

The Durutti Column
Someone Else's Party

A first-ever pressing on vinyl for Someone Else’s Party, the 2003 studio album from Vini Reilly’s long-running The Durutti Column. Written in response to the passing of Reilly’s mother, it’s a gorgeous and profoundly sad record focussing on themes of personal loss and self-reflection. Mind you, it is still a Durutti Column album, so 'Someone Else’s Party' still sounds beautiful in that proto-Perfume Genius sort of way.

Gene

Suede
Royal Albert Hall 24 March 2010

Britpop act Suede had been broken up for a good seven years by the time 2010 came round, but decided to reunite to help out the Teenage Cancer Trust with this rare, one-time deal at the Royal Albert Hall. Except, you know, they got back together for good, because they clearly have no will power. 'Royal Albert Hall' collects the show that brought them back together in all its glory.

The Sound
Shock of Daylight

Influential London post punk group The Sound released their third album, All Fall Down, in 1982. It had an noncommercial sound and therefore did really set the cash registers ringing. They followed this in 1984 with an EP, Shock of Daylight, which had more commercial appeal - kind in the Teardrop Explodes ballpark. Within are some of The Sound’s best songs such as Counting The Days and Golden Soldiers.

Bob Mould
Silver Age

Bob Mould, the Husker Du and Sugar guy, has generally always been a guitar man but prior to the release of his 10th solo album the Silver Age had been dabbling in electronics. For fans of Mould and his big fat guitar sound, the Silver Age was a welcome return to the driving alternative rock he'd been best known for. It now gets a heavyweight silver vinyl re-issue on Demon.

The Creation
Power Surge

Creation Records boss Alan McGee suggested ‘60s legends The Creation get together and write a song called Creation and release it on his label. The band were McGee’s favourite and the inspiration for naming his label. They played some shows and ended up writing an album’s worth of material. Power Surge was originally released in 1996 and is now reissued on orange vinyl.

The Creation
Psychedelic Rose

Legendary ‘60s band The Creation reformed in 1985 to record new songs. Psychedelic Rose was the resulting album. Despite two singles being released in 1987, the album didn't get released. It eventually saw the light of day in 2004 and was subtitled The Great Lost Creation Album. It is now being reissued on 180g red vinyl. Includes the singles Spirit Called Love and a new version of an old classic, Making Time.

The Creation
How Does It Feel To Feel?

Always one of the most undervalued British bands of the Sixties - their guitarist used a bow on his guitar years before Jimmy Page thought of it - The Creation are overdue a re-appraisal. This re-issue of 1982 compilation How Does It Feel To Feel?, named after their 1968 hit and gathering together all of the material they recorded with Who producer Shel Talmy, is a good starting point.

Bob Mould
The Last Dog and Pony Show

The Last Dog and Pony Show was the fourth album by the legendary musician Bob Mould. It was originally released in 1998. Whilst it was still very much a rock album, it was the first album by the former Husker Du and Sugar man to feature electronic elements. He would go on to experiment further, and more prominently, on subsequent releases. Reissue on Demon.

Frank Black
Christmass

As we try to forget all about the fact that the later Pixies albums exist, it's time to head back into Frank Black's solo archives now that many of his albums are getting the reissue treatment courtesy of Domino. 'Christmass' isn't, as you might have thought, a festive album, but instead is a collection of acoustic recordings from Black's 2006 touring exploits. Pixies classics rub up with solo material on this "unplugged" set.

Gene
To See The Lights

'To See The Lights' was the second album by Gene, released in 1996. Although this is a compilation album, it is still regarded as a necessary piece in the band’s catalogue. It features some of their earliest recordings along with B-sides, live tracks and covers of the Bacharach & David song 'I Say A Little Prayer' and The Beatles’ 'Don't Let Me Down'.

Gene
Olympian

Gene were mid-90s NME darlings who were massively influenced by The Smiths - something evidenced by Martin Rossiter’s vocals and their album artwork. Other influences such as The Jam and The Clash meant that their sound sat quite neatly in the Britpop scene. 'Olympian' was Gene's debut album and was originally released in 1995.

Bob Mould

Bob Mould released his eponymous album as his third solo album in 1996. This came after his time with Husker Du and Sugar. The Fall
The Twenty-Seven Points

Demon Records give the re-issue treatment to a sometimes overlooked and underappreciated part of The Fall’s back catalogue of the early Nineties. The Fall
Middle Class Revolt

Middle Class Revolt was the Fall’s sixteenth (we think) studio album originally released in 1994. The previous years The Infotainment Scan was their highest charting album but it was back something to normal for this one. Not that Mark E. Smith would have been bothered as he and his band blast through another batch of unclassifiable racket. Reissue on Demon.

The Fall
The Infotainment Scan

The Infotainment Scan was the Fall's 15th album released in 1993. Coming after a period of success for the band, it was a typically eccentric effort containing two remarkable cover versions in Sister Sledge's Lost in Music and Steve Bent's I'm Going to Spain.  Elsewhere it was business as usual as The Fall continued to blend electronic sounds into their glam racket but despite all the oddness this ended up as their highest charting album.

Suede
Head Music (Deluxe 20th Anniversary Edition)

Twenty years eh? Twenty years since Suede's Head Music with songs like Electricity and She's in Fashion and lyrics about being freaks on the edge of the wasteland of the city and dreaming about one day not being trash on the streets. The album was made right in the epicentre of Brett Anderson's addiction to crack but still managed to make it to number one. Now you can get it as a 4CD or 3LP set complete with non LP B sides.
