Guided By Voices
Winecork Stonehenge

It looks like Guided By Voices are gearing up for a hefty release schedule in 2019. They already have Zeppelin Over China, a double album, chalked in for a February release with another album, It’s Warp And Woof, due in April. Before all that excitement however, there are a couple of 7” singles to buy, one of which is Winecork Stonehenge. 7” on Guided By Voices Inc.

Guided By Voices
Sweating The Plague

Robert Pollard slams his hand down hard on the top of his guitar amplifier. Sweat pours from his brow; his eyes, heavily-bagged from the sleepless nights, glower with deranged intensity; his clothes are now but rags, ripped and filthy. ‘Again! Dammit, again! We’ll play … the songs … again.’ ‘B… but Robert’, pipes up one of his fellow Guided By Voices members - it’s hard to tell which seeing as all of the band are now a huddled mass, cowering in the darkest corner of the rehearsal room - ‘Robert, we’re exhausted. We’ve been in this room for three days, playing melodious indie-rock in the Hüsker Dü/Pavement mould non-stop, and we simply can’t go on any further. We need rest. We need food. We need to see our families. We’ve already released two LPs in 2019 anyway - isn’t that enough?’ ‘No!’ shouts Robert, punching a hole in the wall to emphasise his point. ‘No. We go again. We’ll be in here rehearsing our new record Sweating The Plague until it’s done, and it’s done why I say it’s done. Kapeesh?’ ‘Y… yes Robert.’

Robert Pollard with Doug Gillard
Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department

A 20th anniversary re-issue of the fourth in Guided By Voices’ Fading Captain series of side-projects, Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Department saw the band’s inimitable frontman Robert Pollard buddy up with his long-term guitarist and lieutenant Doug Gillard for 15 tracks of idiosyncratic indie-rock. Includes ‘Do Something Real’, which soundtracked the finale of Steven Soderbergh’s Full Frontal movie.

Robert Pollard
Kid Marine

Kid Marine was the third album (in a discography which now contains approximately two billion albums) by Guided By Voices indefatigable leader, Robert Pollard. It was originally released in 1999, so this is a spiffing 20th anniversary reissue. Apparently it’s Pollard’s favourite amongst his solo albums. A good enough reason to hit ‘add to cart’.

Guided By Voices
Zeppelin Over China

The insanely prolific Robert Pollard releases yet another collection of grungy niceness with his Guided By Voices crew. At thirty-two songs and seventy-five minutes, Zeppelin Over China is long even by GBV standards. Indeed, it’s remarkable that an album with this many songs can remain so consistently good throughout. Then again, Pollard is a pretty remarkable talent.

Guided By Voices
Warp and Woof

And Another! As Alan Partridge might say. Warp And Woof is Guided By Voices’ ultra-speedy follow-up to February’s double offering, Zeppelin Over China. Robert Pollard and co. have taken their already prolific nature and turbo charged it. This one prides itself on cramming lots of songs into less that 40 minutes, a similar feat to the band’s ‘90s classic Alien Lanes. Let's hope it matches it in quality too. On Guided By Voices Inc.

Guided By Voices
Please Be Honest

The endless productivity of Robert Pollard continues apace with Please Be Honest, designated a Guided By Voices album even though Pollard played every last sound on it. The 15 speedy songs on here give us the latest insights into this remarkably creativity, via a variety of nicely textured tunes. Out on Guided By Voices Inc.

Guided By Voices
100 Dougs

Guided By Voices seem to be rattling out the releases. Space Gun was their most recent acclaimed LP and it's due to be followed by It’s Warp and Woof early next year and a future double album. Before it all, here's 100 Dougs, a 7" EP of Country influenced Rock songs to sink your teeth into.

Robert Pollard
Waved Out

Not only do we have to wade through a new Robert Pollard/Guided By Voices record each week, we now have re-issues to contend with. 'Waved out' was Pollard's second second solo album and came from an era where I was still fairly excited about his output. It's good, if not quite as good as it's predecessor 'Not In My Airport'. The highlight is 'People Are Leaving' where Pollard creates a brilliant double melody by singing over himself. It's worth the admission price alone.

Guided By Voices
Space Gun

Since we started our #namethenewguidedbyvoicesalbum hashtag Guided By Voices album titles have become really boring. Here's the latest one  - 'Space Gun'. 'Reversed Hen Tsunami Plot' will just have to wait I suppose. This is the third from the new classic GBV line up which includes such future legends as Mark Shue and Bobby Bare Jr. We're told Robert Pollard's songwriting has reached new heights of brilliance on this one. Hope so.

Guided By Voices
Ogre's Trumpet

Tobin Sprout - pah! Mitch Mitchell - who? We all know that the new classic Guided By Voices line up is the Pollard/Gillard/March/Shue/Bare Jr one that rocked Asbury Park, New Jersey in August 2017. Were you there? Probably not but now you can relive the sights, the smells and the sounds of the grandpops of lo-fi as they rattle through their last two albums and throw in a smattering of classics from earlier incarnations.

Guided By Voices
How Do You Spell Heaven

Rather like Mark E Smith, Robert Pollard has a habit of pulling out a plum just when you are thinking it's all over. Re-grouped and re-invigorated with an (almost) all new line up, last years August By Cake was more like the band we remembered and hot on it's heels we get another. Fifteen new tunes from the fab (insert this week's line up number).
