Johnny Flynn
A Larum

2007 was the year singer songwriter Johnny Flynn came of age playing a host of shows as well as releasing this his debut album. He travelled out to the Seattle countryside to record this with producer Ryan Hadlock (the Strokes etc) and the result more than lived up to the energy and pathos of his live shows. Now perhaps more famous as an actor, the album shows Flynn at the embryonic part of his musical career.

Scott Walker
Scott 4

From way back in 1969, Scott 4 is a classic of intense and majestic songcraft; the first set of entirely Walker penned songs combining sophisticated, easy-listening pop with lyrical complexity touching on the darkest of subject matter. Seen as a something of a commercial flop at the time of its release compared to his four previous albums, Scott Walker connoiseurs now consider this to be amongst his best work.

Scott Walker
Tilt

Contrary to what it may seem, ‘Tilt’ was not a complete shift in trajectory for the former pop star Scott Walker. Prior to its release in 1995, Walker had spent years finding ever more oblique methods to communicate his ideas, however, is undoubtedly true that ‘Tilt’ was his most daringly realised attempt yet. Desolate, ardently experimental, but also beautiful, a pathway which would lead to later opuses such ‘The Drift’, ‘Bish Bosch’, and ‘Soused’ - his collaborative LP with drone metal legends Sunn o))) .

Scott Walker
Climate of Hunter

Typically of Scott Walker, his eleventh album (originally released in 1984) is both experimental in sound and texture but features guest spots from the mainstream likes of Mark Knopfler and Billy Ocean. There's no-one quite like him is there? This was a 'comeback' album released ten years after his previous solo LP and shows his music becoming ever more fractured. Next stop: Tilt.

Scott Walker
Til The Band Comes In

'Til The Band Comes In' was Scott Walker's sixth record, originally released in 1970 and consisting of two distinct sides: on the first, Walker gives us a bunch of new solo material, while on the flip there are covers on covers. While Walker started as a renowned pop crooner with a baritone and a lot of melodrama, 'Til The Band Comes In' has hints of the artist who would eventually stop all that easy listening and go hard with the avant-garde.

Cocteau Twins
Milk & Kisses

Milk and Kisses was the final album made by the legendary Scottish band Cocteau Twins before their split in 1997. Milk and Kisses streamlined their dream pop template further showcasing the tremendous operatic vocals of Liz Frazer. Much copied, never matched,  the band's status and influence has only grown in their absence.

Dusty Springfield
Dusty In Memphis

A few years ago (I say ‘a few’ I probably mean 20) I read an opinion, I think in the NME, that the 10-second intro to Son Of A Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield is the greatest 10 seconds of music ever recorded. It’s hard to argue with as it is very good indeed. Dusty Springfield released Dusty In Memphis in 1969 and utilised the talents of the city’s finest session musicians. It was produced by Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd and is thought of as her best work, and is arguably one of the best albums of all time.

Arcade Fire
Neon Bible

2007 brought the second album of Arcade Fire, the semi-conceptual grandeur of Neon Bible. The great Canadians outdid themselves here with an album full of religious fear, chamber orchestration and general vastness, with bangers like ‘No Cars Go’ and the organ-doom of ‘Intervention’ just some of the set-pieces. Sony reissue.

The Teardrop Explodes
Kilimanjaro

Julian Cope is now known as one of English alternative music’s most distinctive auteurs, but his story began with the Liverpudlian band The Teardrop Explodes. This is a heavyweight vinyl re-issue of their 1980 debut album Kilimanjaro, which housed many of their best-known songs, including UK Top Ten hit ‘Reward’.

The Teardrop Explodes
Wilder

The glittering but short-lived career of The Teardrop Explodes came to an end with 1981’s Wilder, only the second album completed by Julian Cope and co. before they disintegrated. More complex and moodier than its predecessor, reliant on loops and synths rather than guitars, it now gets a heavyweight vinyl re-issue.

Razorlight
Razorlight

Whilst Up All Night, the debut album by Razorlight, gave them some solid bricks to build on, their eponymous second sent them stratospheric. It contains the singles In The Morning and America, the latter gave the band their first and only number one, around the time when it just still mattered. 180g vinyl reissue LP on Mercury.

Cocteau Twins
Four-Calendar Café

Originally released in 1993, Four Calendar Cafe was Cocteau Twins most pop orientated album to date with Liz Frazer's distinctive vocals more to the front of the mix with her lyrics marginally more comprehensible. A gorgeous work, it showed Cocteau Twins could emerge out of their dreamy world and still be truly affecting.

Razorlight
Up All Night

Back in 2004, Razorlight were the hot new things on the block, cooler, edgier and more rock ‘n’ roll than contemporaries The Kooks, for example. Up All Night, their debut album, came flying out of the traps with its high energy indie-cum-punk that ostensibly took its influences from The Strokes and Television. 180g vinyl reissue on Mercury.

Cocteau Twins
Treasure Hiding: The Fontana Years

Prototypical shoegazers and dreampoppers extraordinaire Cocteau Twins are ever-relevant in today's shoegaze revival. This 4 CD box-set contains remastered versions (approved by Robin Guthrie himself) of the band's last two albums: 1991’s Four Calendar Cafe and 1996’s Milk & Kisses. Also included are one and a half disc of B-sides and rarities, and half a disc of live recordings.

Soft Cell
Northern Lights / Guilty (Cos I Say You Are)

They are back back back folks: Marc Almond’s classic synth-pop concern Soft Cell, presenting their first new material since the heady days of 2002. Although apparently this is a bit of a farewell release too… Northern Lights doffs a cap to the Northern Soul sound, which had a key influence on the Cell. 7” single from Mercury.

James
Gold Mother

A reissue of James’ third album, first released in 1990 in the wake of their big hit ‘Sit Down’ and responding to that success with a big epic pop-rock sound. Anthems was the name of the game on Gold Mother, as evidenced by the presence of violins and trumpets and the like. Double LP reissue, featuring the original 1990 tracklisting.

James
Seven

Here is your chance to scoop up vinyl reissues of some of James’s vintage albums, courtesy of Mercury. Seven, which I’m afraid is their fourth album rather than their seventh, was produced partly by Killing Joke’s Youth, and partly by Steve Chase… can you hear the difference? Double LP reissue.

James
Pleased To Meet You

Tuck into some James why don’t you? Mercury are launching a series of reissues of the britpoppish band’s albums, and Pleased To Meet You is the last album they released before their initial hiatus circa 2001. Look carefully at the cover art, which is a composite image of all the members of the band compressed into one face… James himself if you will. Double LP reissue.

James
Millionaires

Vinyl reissues of some of James’s vintage albums, available now thanks to the Mercury label. Millionaires is the last James album of the nineties, and it treads quite a bit of different territory during its running time, with both smooth straightforward pop and more ingenious excited songs turning up. Double LP reissue.

James
Whiplash

Mercury are launching a series of reissues of britpoppish band James’s albums, and here is their 1997 effort Whiplash, which was partially produced by no less than Brian Eno and contains ‘She’s A Star’, one of the band’s big hits. The songs veer between slight experimentalism and full synthy pop, with dabs of Eno ambience here and there. Double LP reissue.

Olafur Arnalds
Broadchurch - The Final Chapter

Like Olivia Colman and David Tennant, composer Olafur Arnalds has also returned for the third and final series of Broadchurch, with another suite of emotional minimal musical themes, played with tremendous subtly by both orchestra and smaller ensembles. Broadchurch - The Final Chapter is released on vinyl by Mercury.

Noah And The Whale
The First Days of Spring

Now this is an LP that knows how to drag you through a break-up. Charlie Fink’s pained and delicate vocals combined with warbling violins make you want to check right back into heartbreak hotel. I guess the record's producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony & The Johnsons) knows the language of nostalgia pretty well. A decade after it was first released in 2009, and three years since the group disbanded, it’s stood the test of time surprisingly well. That’s pretty tricky for indie folk rock.
