Grandaddy
The Sophtware Slump ..... on a wooden piano

The Sophtware Slump ..... on a wooden piano by Grandaddy is a reworking of the band’s classic second album which was originally released in 2000. Grand grandaddy Jason Lyttle spent a while sourcing the right instruments in the right studios to make the right sound and then the pandemic came and forced him to change his plans. He recorded the album at home, and rather than being annoyed by the lawnmowers, traffic and noisy birds he made them part of the record.

The Dears
Lovers Rock

Montréal indie rockers The Dears will release their eighth LP on May 15 with Dangerbird Records. Led by husband and wife duo Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak, The Dears offer up a resigned yet pulsatingly anxious album to reflect what they see as the doomed times we’re living in. Influences for this album take in the eclectic range of anything from Krautrock to Burt Bacharach.

Jason Lytle
Arthur King Presents Jason Lytle: NYLONANDJUNO

The latest album in the King Arthur presents series sees Grandaddy mainman Jason Lyttle getting experimental. NYLONANDJUNO was recorded for the LA collective by Lyttle alone using an analog synth and a nylon strung guitar. He took his inspiration for making the music from the song titles he’d already come up with.

Silversun Pickups
Neck Of The Woods

2019 is the year that might be remembered for that Silversun Pickups re-issue campaign. You can now get all four of their early records on coloured vinyl courtesy of Dangerbird. The last of which - Neck of the Woods - was released in 2012 and showcased their emo-based highly tuneful guitar rock coming across something like a squeakier Death Cab For Cutie. Lovely sleeve art I have to say.

Silversun Pickups
Pikul

Remember the first time you heard Silversun Pickups? Me neither but now you can (re) live that time by getting a marble vinyl edition of their debut EP Pikul. For the uninitiated (me) they play a form of emo-tinged guitar music that isn't a million miles away from Death Cab For Cutie. 210 million streams over the years suggests they have a popularity that has evaded me completely.

Cones
Pictures of Pictures

Cones co-founders Jonathan and Michael Rosen spent their childhood eating cereal and banging along homemade drums to the Bee Gees. Interesting stuff from the press release but crucially it omits to tell us which cereal. Their close upbringing has spread into adulthood with the duo finally releasing their debut LP of lush orchestrated pop inspired by the classic artists of yesterday. I think this is *cone* to be special.........

Swervedriver
Think I'm Gonna Feel Better / Reflections

Swervedriver are the latest band of a shoegaze tinge to re-unite (or did they ever actually go away?) In any case they've just released a new album on Rock Action and to celebrate even further here is a 12" of non album tracks for Record Store Day 2019. Both songs are covers in  fact  - by two of my favourite artists - Gene Clark and the Supremes. Nice choices lads.

Arthur King
Changing Landscapes (Wauters Farm)

This looks marvellous. 'Changing Landscapes' by the collective Arthur King was recorded live, outdoors, on an Iowa Farm, at night. It's a collection of pieces taking in clanking dub grooves, alienating electronics, and plenty of drum machines, metallic scrapes, and wind instruments. For fans of, well... everything.

Slothrust
The Pact

Boston fuzzy post-grunge outfit Slothrust have moved to Los Angeles for their fourth album. For some reason, that means The Pact sounds a bit cleaner than we're used to. Of course, front-woman Leah Wellbaum still has her angry and slightly self-loathing lyrics, and they're still set to very catchy riffs. Great if you like Speedy Ortiz, Chastity Belt.

Holly Miranda
Mutual Horse

Songwriter star Holly Miranda makes further vital strides in her sound with Mutual Horse, her fourth and most outwardly developed LP -- she's drawn in collaborators including TV on the Radio's Kyp Malone and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Nova. It's 2009 again and I feel fine! As ever, Expect Miranda to seamlessly blend high and wild textures and the sheen of a synth with reflective hush.

The Dears
Times Infinity Volume Two

The second half of a two album project from Canadian indie rock band The Dears, three years after the first instalment. Their seventh album is uplifting baroque pop with a Ben Folds or Penguin Cafe Orchestra warmth and sense of playful freeness, reflective of good times. LP and CD through Dangerbird.

Slothrust
Everyone Else

Slothrust offer up their third album of powerful indie pop. Leah Wellbaum, Kyle Bann and Will Gorin’s classic power-trio line-up and obviously tight musical connection makes them able to unleash sings that are just as grunge-rock heavy as they are art-pop melodic. Everyone Else is released by Dangerbird.

The Dears
Times Infinity Volume One

The Dears are a Montreal band who’ve been around for long enough (since 1995) to have an established handle on their own sound. Their sixth album, Times Infinity Volume One, shows off that sweeping orchestral indie pop sound to the max, with song subjects that the band refer to as ‘Romantique’. Out on Dangerbird.
