Hatchback
Year of The Dragon

After seven years away Sam Grawe’s Hatchback project returns with its third full-length record. As with previous LPs Colors Of The Sun and Zeus & Apollo, Year Of The Dragon is an electronic music album full of bright colours and textures. Tracks like ‘Haiphong Boogie’ are burbling delights that bring to mind the releases of labels like Mood Hut, Second Circle and Smalltown Supersound. As it is, this one’s out on Lo Recordings (Grimes, Ceephax Acid Crew).

LOR
Lunar Orbit Rendezvous

With a strictly space-mission themed aesthetic, Lunar Orbit Rendezvous by LOR tracks a space journey with electronic music that combines modern techno and deep house with touches of vintage Kraftwerk (check some of those vocoders!). Who are LOR? It doesn’t matter, because this is music that feels like it can thrive in deep space with no need for human interaction. On Lo Recordings.

Ed Macfarlane / Various
Glistens - A Library Compilation by Ed Macfarlane

One of the perks of making music in a band that people like is that occasionally, someone will ask you to put together a cool compilation! Ed Macfarlane of Friendly Fires is in just such a situation, and has assembled his favourite pieces of 1980’s library music for you to enjoy. Glistens is a great, hand-picked introduction to a rare area. Out on Lo Recordings.

Bernard Fevre
Orbit Ceremony 77

Library music is, by definition, pretty obscure, but this one really pushes it. Bernard Fevre’s Orbit Ceremony 77 is an album of library music that was never even released, and was thought lost to the ages. Until a fortunate discovery of the original tapes that is! Now these strange 70’s space-synth pieces can finally be heard. Out on Medical Records, pressed to mustard coloured vinyl.

SMBD
Messages 045 EP

Soulful producer SMBD presents three new tracks and one new remix of one of those new tracks by new artist World Air. The Messages 045 EP is a shiny-bright good time thing made for dancing and smiles, particularly in the case of the track ‘Ping Pong Love’, which features a distant echoed sample of what sounds like an Arthur Russell voice. 12” on Lo Recordings.

Mr. G / K15
A Learning Curve

Two very different tracks populate this 12” on Lo Recordings, each excelling in its own sound world. On the A we have a woozy, percussive drive through softly paranoid atmospheres with deliciously classic hand claps keeping pace; the B side provides a deeper, more introspective contrast that shuffles quietly along a deserted sonic plane.

Grasscut
Everyone Was A Bird – Remixed

Grasscut’s 2015 album Everyone Was A Bird was an incredibly well received piece of post-rock meets indie electronics and string movements. Deciding the project needed something more they approached a load of other great artists to take a song each a remake them in their own inimitable styles. Includes Fink, John Metcalfe, Mira Calix, Adrian Crowley, and Penguin Café.

Grasscut
Everyone Was A Bird

The third album from cinematic folkster duo Andrew Phillips and Marcus O’Dair a.k.a Grasscut. A kitchen sink take on contemporary English folk, Everyone Was A Bird brings in a wealth of instrumentation with orchestral tendencies with sights set on the grandiose. Black Devil Disco Club
Black Moon White Sun

Bernard Fevre of the Black Devil Disco Club moniker makes his purest solo record to date, inviting no guests, offering no features and asking for no help. The result is an intricately designed record with the ease of intuition -- with Black Moon White Sun, Fevre is given the freedom to make the dingiest and most snarling disco cuts he can possibly muster.

The Chap
The Show Must Go

The Chap (not to be confused with the neo-Victorian-gentleman magazine) have been making slightly unusual rock music for quite some time. The Show Must Go On is their 6th album, and boasts an even more political perspective than ever before (understandably, given their clearly-stated European outlook). On Lo Recordings.

Leo Abrahams
Daylight

Featuring contributions from the likes of Brian Eno, Karl Hyde and Leafcutter John, Daylight by Leo Abrahams is a real head-turner. Having played with everyone from Jon Hopkins to Pulp, Abrahams is one helluva seasoned character, represented perfectly by this unique album. Out on CD and vinyl LP from Lo Recordings.

Tom Furse
Child Of A Shooting Star

Tom Furse spends his day-job playing keyboards and synths with The Horrors, but guess what? He also works on solo material that sheds his group’s sleek moody polish in favour of bright, colourful, all-over-the-shop rhythmic odysseys, four of which appear on Child Of A Shooting Star, his new record on Lo Recordings.

Vuurwerk
G.R.I.P EP

VUURWERK come straight outta Belgium, but assimilate the sounds of Berlin, Detroit, East London and Chicago to craft their music, ending up in a very busy place indeed. The Grid EP has two brand new tracks from the trio, plus remixes of the title track from DNKL and House of Black Lanterns. 10” on Lo Recordings.

Black Devil
Disco Club

Black Devil Disco Club gets the remaster treatment from the ever-reliable Lo Recordings. Bernard Fevre a.k.a Black Devil gained a late boost of notoriety in 2006 thanks to a reissue by Rephlex. Recorded in Paris in 1978 with synths, tape loops and real drums it’s a funky journey towards leftfield disco from a French master. Out on CD and vinyl LP from Lo Recordings.

Red Snapper
Card Trick EP

Red Snapper are one of Britian's most renowned instrumental acts, crafting delicate downtempo tunes through a synthesis of organic jazz arrangements. On 'Card Trick EP', they celebrate their recent record 'Hyena' with the original self-titled track along with three new remixes from some like-minded friends. Tici Taci sustain things beyond the point of no return, while Rich Thair and Auntie Flo also do their worst.

Nick Nicely
Space Of A Second

One of the few people on earth who kinda deserves the tag ‘Legendary’, Nick Nicely burst onto the scene in 1982 with a remarkable sound which married Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd with synth-pop and the electronic pulse of Neu, Kraftwerk and Suicide. A sound that any baked psych band of note today would consider de rigeur but just imagine what it sounded like then. His single 'Hilly Fields' was and is one of the most remarkable and sinister pieces of music ever comitted to tape. Believe me  - check it.  But things didn't quite work out in the music biz for Mr Nicely and its only recently with the advent of re-issue culture has his music been rediscovered with the likes of Burger records and Captured Tracks have re-issues his stuff bringing it to a whole new audience.  I can't tell from the press notes whether this is a 'new' album or an album of unreleased tracks. Whatever it is its bound to be interesting. It contains 14 tracks ranging from shoegaze bliss to lo-fi baroque psychedelia and even contains a reworking of 'Hilly Fields'.

Red Snapper
Hyena

No soundclips on this so I'm going off what the label say. I've always been a bit partial to a bit of Red Snapper so its nice to see that they are still on the go. It seems like they have stayed hungry to produce better and better work which is great to see. The album is inspired by a recent soundtrack they did for cult 70's Sengalese road movie "Touki Bouki", touring for a year with the film has helped them have a tight and disciplined approach. As you may expect there are lots of '70's influences on this reflecting their work over the last few years but its not all retro-ist as they combine it with cutting edge futurist musicality to create a timeless  African-influenced album.

Grimes
Halfaxa

Halfaxa is the second record from Claire Boucher aka Grimes, originally released in 2010, before she became a tremendously big deal. It still has that home-grown vibe, with Boucher’s hazy productions coalescing around her remarkable vocals like a cloud. The feel is of woozy retreat, and it’s hard to resist. Reissued by Arbutus.
