Wire
Wire

This album is not about the Baltimore drug scene. It’s not about how to transfer money. It’s not about insulating your house. It’s our first submission for UnGoogleable Album of the Year 2015. Wire’s 13th album, their first self-titled, is the return of a punkband that has been going for almost 40 years. That’s above the average life expectancy of anybody in a punk band, and hence an impressive feat in its own right. Hopefully the album is equally impressive.

Wire
10:20

10:20 is an album Wire had intended to release on Record Store Day. Given the current situation, with Record Store Day being delayed and revamped, they have decided to release it in the usual way. The album comprised previously unreleased songs from the Red Barked Tree sessions in 2010 and the more recent Hive Mind from 2020. You see where the title comes from now, don’t you?

Wire
Mind Hive

Mind Hive is the new album by post-punk legends Wire. It follows on from their critically acclaimed 2017 album, Silver / Lead. That album left fans and critics believing the band had found the form of their late ‘70s heyday. Mind Hive may well have improved on that - and there’s the enticing prospect of one song, Be Like Them, featuring lyrics written in 1977 which were recently rediscovered.

Wire
Change Becomes Us

Wire are generally the most forward-thinking of veteran post-punk bands yet even they can't help but look to the past for inspiration. Change Becomes Us came about when they decided to revisit tracks that had only been played once or twice back in their late '70's heyday and re-work them into new tracks. The result is a varied and inspired album that, like the band itself, refuses to sit still in one genre.

Wire
Live At the Roxy 1977 / Live At CBGB Theatre 1978

Gig recordings from Wire’s imperial phase here. The Live At The Roxy 1977 section actually features audio from two shows on consecutive nights at London’s Roxy club. This is Pink Flag era so the set is as sharp as a knife. As for Live At CBGB Theatre 1978? Well, it’s the band playing at CBGB a year later (the theatre venue, not the main stage). By this point Wire were in Chairs Missing mode so their sound had opened up a bit, but as a live proposition they remained an austere, brutalist thrill.

Wire
Red Barked Tree

Red Barked Tree was Wire's 2010 era album on which the band pared back to a trio comprising Colin Newman, Graham Lewis and Robert Grey. The result is, as you may expect, a more minimal and compact affair eschewing their more abrasive sound for the kind of melodic, economical pop they played in the mid 80's. Another addition to their rich history and as always a fascinating listen.

Wire
Silver / Lead

The fifteenth Wire album, released in the year of their fortieth anniversary, finds the group still sounding spritely and fresh. Most importantly of all, Silver / Lead finds them still sounding highly creative! CD and LP versions available, plus a deluxe CD-in-80-page-book edition that features stacks of exclusive text and imagery. Out on the band’s Pink Flag imprint.

Wire
Nocturnal Koreans

After finishing their self-titled 2015 album, post-punk unit Wire discovered they had material that didn’t fit that album’s themes. So, we get Nocturnal Koreans, a compilation of album offcuts that are as jagged and powerful as anything the band have recorded. The freedom of releasing music outside an album structure lets the band properly experiment with composition and sound.

Wire
Document and Eyewitness

Ok so this is the 4th Wire album now re-issued with loadsa bonus stuff. Out originally on Rough Trade in 1980, the album was primarily recorded live at a 1979 show but has been unavailable for years. As is tradition its now been unearthed, bonus tracks added and released for all generations to enjoy.  This is no regulation live recirding though. Wire performed new songs accompanied by a series of interventions to howls of derision from the crowd resulting in an unorthodox and brutal document.  For the album, the Electric Ballroom material was supplemented with recordings from a July 1979 show at the Notre Dame Hall , along with one track from a 1979 gig in Montreux.

Wire
On The Box 1979

Wire’s live DVD On The Box 1979 gets a reissue through the group’s own Pink Flag imprint. This live set, filmed for German music show Rockpalast, is a rare visual document of the band’s imperial phase. Captured during the band's Pink Flag-Chairs Missing-154 run, On The Box 1979 shows off the post-punkers in all their gnarled glory. The DVD also includes a previously-unreleased interview with Wire conducted by Alan Bangs.

Wire
154

This is Wire's third album and was an icy example of the sort of dark art rock that was around at the time. There was however something special about Wire. They never were content to sit still and so each album is a development on the last. Certainly this is one of their albums that could be considered a masterpiece. Now comes with loads of bonus demo material and B sides.

Wire
Pink Flag

Like many great albums of yesteryear, Wire’s debut, Pink Flag did very little commercially at the time of its release in 1977. It has fortunately and rightly since been awarded ‘classic’ status by fans and critics alike. Elastica also owe this album a debt of gratitude, check out Three Girl Rhumba.  Available as special edition, remastered 2CD with book on Pink Flag, demos and alternative mixes, remastered vinyl LP and standard digipak remastered CD.

Chairs Missing

Wire's second album has now, belatedly, got the re-issue treatment. 'Chairs Missing' expanded the short, sharp art-rock of their debut 'Pink Flag' into something more rounded and experimental, particularly in terms of their song structure. The CD editions come with bonus discs of so many demos that you won't know what to do with them.
