Spring Heel Jack and Wadada Leo Smith
Hackney Road

Ashley Wales and John Coxon - the duo of Spring Heel Jack and Treader Records - have long liked a bit of free jazz. Makes sense, then that they’ve got Pulitzer Prize-nominated trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith in to toot his horn alongside them on Hackney Road. The six parts of this LP are a thick, syrupy brew, bringing to mind the paranoid freakouts on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly as well as the more obtuse bits of Dean Blunt’s output.

About Group
RAK

Looks like Charles Hayward's escaped but with new drummer Rupert Clervaux here are more rhythmic jams from the 'super' group who also contain John Coxon (Spring Heel Jack) and one Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip. The press release compares it to Ege Bamyasi era Can and if it gets even close to that then we'll be delighted.

Alexis Taylor
Rubbed Out

Bespectacled Hot Chip crooner Alexis Taylor was just a wee nipper when his debut solo LP came out on Treader Records back in 2008. A decade on and Rubbed Out finally gets a vinyl release. This is a tender and charming collection of home-taped ditties, all of which are dedicated to his partner. There’s a lot of Love Is Overtaking Me/Calling Out Of Context Arthur Russell in here.

John Tchicai
John Tchicai With Strings

John Tchicai With Strings documents a mid-2000’s date with John Coxon and Ashley Wales of Spring Heel Jack, where the saxophone and bass clarinet legend showed the younger guns the path to a beautiful sonic synthesis. John Tchicai With Strings is released by Coxon and Wales’ Treader label

Evan Parker
Evan Parker With Birds (For Steve Lacy)

A superb recording from 2005, now reissued for your fresh listening pleasure. Evan Parker that most circular breathing of British free improvisers, here pits his extended saxophone techniques alongside birdsong recordings by John Coxon and Ashley Wales: yeah, the title Evan Parker With Birds does not lie. Steve Lacey, the dedicatee, would be proud. Vinyl reissue from Treader.

J Spaceman
Guitar Loops

Here is a unique thing  - Mr Jason Pierce of Spiritualized made it in 2005 and unlike his normal band's gospel-ey space rock, it has him playing around with guitar loops. It consists of two long improvisations, one on each side, with a kind of ordered chaos for the listener to interpret. First time on vinyl and a must for Spacemen 3/Spiritualized fans.
