Skint & Demoralised
We Are Humans

Wakefield’s Skint & Demoralised - a vehicle for the spoken-word art of frontman Matt Abbott - gears up for its first album release in six years, and the current febrile state of Brexit-paralysed Britain has been needing it! We Are Humans works because it focusses on humanity, not anger, seeking to unite rather than divide further. Presented on white vinyl via Fierce Panda.

Coldplay
The Brothers

Way back in 1999, before 'Clocks' (the song, not actual clocks), before 'Yellow' (the song, not the actual colour), before Parachutes (the album, not the floaty life-saving device), Coldplay were a relatively unknown band. They released a double 7” EP called Brothers & Sisters. Now it’s being reissued by Fierce Panda as two 7” singles. This one is The Brothers and features the songs 'Brothers & Sisters' and 'Easy To Please'.

Coldplay
The Sisters

Before Chris Martin and Co. vied for world domination with the likes of U2 and….oh some other bands. Before the thought of marrying Hollywood superstars, let alone consciously uncoupling from them, had entered Mr. Martin’s head, Coldplay released a double 7” EP called Brothers & Sisters. Now it’s being reissued by Fierce Panda as two 7” singles. This one is The Sisters and features the songs 'Brothers & Sisters' and 'Only Superstition'.

Desperate Journalist
In Search of the Miraculous

As someone whose job involves a bit of journalist adjacent work, or as other people call it, "writing", I can't help but feel attacked by the name Desperate Journalist have gone for. But I must be unbiased. In Search of the Miraculous is the goth-y rock band's third album and lives its title. Big choruses, big solos, big euphoria.

VLMV
Stranded, Not Lost

London duo VLMV (pronounced ‘Alma’ - give over!) are Stranded, Not Lost. Suggest otherwise and you might be in for a long discussion on semantics. The pair have managed to hybridise the gloomy grandiosity and quirky-sad textuality of post-rock with the intimate sparseness of open-mic London singer-songwritery, resulting in atmospheric feels aplenty.

Wooden Arms
Trick Of The Light

Norwich based five-piece Wooden Arms release their second album, furthering their genre fluidity and pushing modern classical, trip-hop and experimental closer and closer together. With multiple sides to their coin they play between theatrical, ethereal, cryptic and downright heavy. Cinematic Orchestra and Sigur Ros meet cinematic folk.

Whistlejacket
Oh Brother / What I Ate On Sunday

Fierce Panda is one of the few labels to still be around from the mad days of the mid '90s but here they are still plugging away. Their latest hope is this quite listenable fuzz rock band who like their wah wah pedals and even inject some electro kraut into their filthy psychedelic sound. It's all low slung riffage for a Friday night down at the Dublin Castle. Dead sweaty.

Mates Of State
You’re Going To Make It

Almost a decade since their last UK appearance, Connecticut-based, indie/synth/pop duo Kori Gardner (vocals, organ, piano and guitar) and Jason Hammel (vocals, drums, percussion and synth) finally announce their first release in four years. Their long awaited EP ‘You’re Going To Make It’ consists of five tracks of pure emotion, pouring out through powerful vocal harmonies and swelling synth pop melodies.

Surfer Blood
1000 Palms

A little of surfer/indie chillwave rock is always much appreciated, and Surfer Blood do a splendid job at concocting a perfect mix. Lo-fi drums and lush guitars, with pleasant vocal harmonies, these guys make you feel like summer is here. The forecast: 1000 Palms will be the soundtrack of your summer road trips.

Helsinki
A Guide For The Perplexed

Featuring a Sgt Pepper’s sleeve style supergroup assembly of guest artists including Pete Doherty, Albert Hammond Jr, Fionn Regan and Emma Gillespie, the HELSINKI band itself is also a force to be reckoned with drummer Seb Roachford (Polar Bear), double bassist Spencer Brown (Andy Sheppard), guitarist Matt Park (Mystery Jets), keyboardist Stephen Large (Squeeze, Paul Heaton), percussionist Jamie Morrison (The Noisettes, Stereophonics) and violinists Johnny Fielding (Larrikin Love) and Gillian Maguire (Soko, Swim Deep). ‘A Guide For The Perplexed’ is a raggedly melodic, heart bearing composition of beautiful, acoustic soundscapes that are quietly raising hell.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
Days of Abandon

Twee creeps The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart continue to delve into romances that make them lovesick and day jobs that make them think of magic netherworlds instead. The pop hooks are as reliable as ever on Days of Abandon, which recalls Heavenly, Haim and Tom Petty all at once. Nice elucidated shoegaze pop for the days when you want someone to whisper their sadness in your ear.

The Crookes
Soapbox

Sheffield four-piece The Crookes met, whilst probably quite drunk, at the Fuzz Club in the city. Soapbox was recorded in Italy in an old church on top of mountain. The band have been fairly prolific since their 2010 inception, releasing a mini album, two full length albums and a single before their latest offering, Soapbox. Soapbox is available on vinyl LP and CD.
