Lau
Midnight and Closedown

The latest album from Lau, produced by John Parish, is still in some senses a folk album, but Lau have developed a long way over the twelve years of their career to date, and Midnight and Closedown presents folk sounds and structures in landscape of drum machines, electronics and extended instrumental moments. Is this the Closedown of Lau? Released by Reveal.

Joan As Police Woman & Benjamin Lazar Davis
Let It Be You

The next step for the eclectic career of Joan As Policewoman is this collaboration with the similarly busy Benjamin Lazar Davis. Let It Be You pulls in a little Central African influence (the pair met through some international projects), but mostly works it into smart Brooklynite pop music. This debut collaboration is out on the Reveal label: the LP comes with a poster.

Martin Green
Flit

Affecting, contemporary, and experimental in parts, Martin Green has put together a unique blend of folk music and the unknown. Featuring some absolutely incredible guests from groups including Portishead, Mogwai, The Unthanks, Arab Strap, and Lau. Not really many rules here, and that’s great fun… well, it is.

Holy Wave
Freaks of Nurture

Here we have the third album proper (following some singles and b-sides compilations) from Holy Wave, a Texan gang much enamoured with surf and psych music. On Freaks Of Nature they like to lean back and let the songs drift forwards, the guitar haze and the vocal harmonies merging into a warm drone. Released by Reveal.

Richard J. Birkin
Vigils

Richard J. Birkin has put together a very subtle collection here on Vigils, with many of the pieces containing nothing more than stately piano and wispy strings, the latter provided by Iskra Strings, who you may have heard with Radiohead or Johann Johannsson. A hushed record, full of melancholy wonder and quiet drama. On Reveal.

Hafdis Huld
Home

Hafdis Huld is an Icelandic singer and Home is her third album. Being from Iceland, comparisons to Bjork are inevitable, but Huld’s songs are much more of this world. Hafdis Huld possesses a magnificent voice and writes striking lyrics. Combined with her penchant for melody, these songs are quite infectious.  The first single to be taken from the album, Queen Bee is a good example of her sweet folk. Home is available on CD.
