Contact Field Orchestra
Vol. 1

Now this is an interesting one. For the first few years of its existence LA label Hit+Run was best known for releasing kush-hazed hip-hop tapes from the likes of Jonwayne and Teebs. However, their releases from the Contact Field Orchestra changed perceptions of the label. Damon Aaron discovered these strange tapes at an estate sale in 2008. Some digging led him to discover that these were field recordings, captured around the beginning of the 20th Century, of a band of miners from the San Gabriel area of California. Aaron then spent some time polishing up the recordings as best he could and, if necessary, filling in parts where the recordings cut out. The result was 2013’s Vol. 1, an album of eerie folk that sounds like some proto-Tom Waits artist released via Death Is Not The End.

Leonard Charles
Basement Donuts

As a reinterpreted edition of Dilla's seminal Donuts album, Basement Donuts is the squelching brainchild of New Zealand producer Leonard Charles. Clocking in at a mammoth thirty-one tracks, the release is impressively raw, live and composed in a crisp and layered fashion.

Contact Field Orchestra
Mapping The Futures Gone By

In 2008, producer Damon Aaron came bought a box of 7” reel tapes at an estate sale. What he found on them was field recordings of an ex-miner’s orchestra, mainly playing self-made instruments, from the early 1900s. This became the foundation of Contact Field Orchestra. The music has been likened to some sort of stoned union of Tom Waits and Augustus Pablo. Mapping The Futures Gone By is the fourth release by CFO and is on the Hit+Run label. CFO have appeared on Volume 10 of Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Bubblers series and also on Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel mix.

Mono/Poly
Paramatma

Full-length debut for Mono/Poly, who appears to trade in dubstep rhythms, free-floating samples, and strong lashings of eastern philosophy in the track titles. Since the initial 2010 release of Paramatma, Mono/Poly has been picked up by the Brainfeeder crew, something I think is incipient in his sound here. Double LP on Hit & Run.

Teebs
Estara Outtakes / Remixes

Enjoyed Teebs’ recent Estara album? Want to hear more along those lines? Then you’ll be pleased to see the arrival of this LP on the Hit + Run label, which includes tracks from the same sessions that haven’t previously been released. Also, we have a couple of remixes, from Nosdam, Hominidae, and Co Fe. Available as either red or black vinyl, though please note the red is more limited!
