Sound of Yell
Leapling

Stevie Jones is known for his work with El Hombre Trajeado, Arab Strap, Emma Pollock and Alasdair Roberts. He also makes some pleasingly lush, tumbling, folky acoustic music under the name Sound of Yell. On his second album, Leapling, he collaborates with fellow Scots Alex Neilson of Alex Rex / Trembling Bells, Stevie Jackson of Belle and Sebastian, Alasdair Roberts and Vicki Morton of Muscles of Joy / Rev Magnetic.

Citizen Bravo, Raymond MacDonald & Friends
Return To Y'Hup - The World Of Ivor Cutler

Ivor Cutler was a Scottish legend. Beloved of John Peel, the singer, poet and humorist was a staple on left field BBC programmes throughout the '70s and '80s. Citizen Bravo and Raymond MacDonald have decided to reinterpret Cutlers work with help from a plethora of guest such as Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai), Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand) and Tracy-Ann Campbell (Camera Obscura). Truly a loving tribute to the great man.

Mogwai
Come On Die Young

This deluxe edition of ‘Come On Die Young’ has been painstakingly put together by the band and label, unearthing more than an hour of bonus material, including: Previously unreleased takes from early Chem19 sessions of ‘Waltz For Aidan’, ‘Christmas Steps’, ‘Rollerball’ and ‘7-25’, which featured on ‘Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait’. Seven remixed and remastered album tracks from CAVA sessions pre-dating the final Tarbox recording sessions. Two previously unreleased tracks - ‘Satchel Panzer’ and ‘Spoon Test’. Rarities ‘Nick Drake’, ‘Hugh Dallas’ and the three track ‘Travels In Constants’ EP. The original, previously unreleased version of ‘Helps Both Ways’. Available on double CD, 4LP box set and digital download. Box set details: Four 180gsm LPs featuring the original double LP, plus two LPs of bonus material and a download code for all audio. Adrian Crowley
Dark Eyed Messenger

Sad songwriter Adrian Crowley's fourth album for Chemikal Underground (though he did plenty before this association) finds him disassociating himself with the instrument that has been a constant companion throughout his career. The humble guitar. Instead 'Dark Eyed Messenger' sits Crowley's chocolate brown voice above a combination of pianos, mellotron and strings. Stark.

Malcolm Middleton
5:14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine

2002’s 5:14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine saw Arab Strap mainstay Malcolm Middleton step out as an artist on his own terms. Middleton has subsequently perked up over the course of a long and fruitful run of solo records, but 5:14 Fluoxytine Seagull Alcohol John Nicotine is an album as wracked and self-examining as anything made by Middleton’s heroes Smog and Will Oldham. This new Chemikal Underground pressing comes souped-up with a bunch of rarities and demoes.

El Hombre Trajeado
Fast Diagonal

El Hombre Trajeado were a big deal for Glasgow’s alternative music makers back in the day, but they’ve been away since 2004… No longer! Now, new album Fast Diagonal is here. Joining the original cast (including RM Hubbert!) are several guest vocalists, including Ela Orleans and Sue Tompkins of Life Without Buildings. An exciting return! Released, naturally enough, by Chemikal Underground.

Alun Woodward
Music From Battle Mountain

Alun Woodward hasn’t been sighted in the music world for 7 years, but the former Delgado / Lord Cut Glass man now returns under his own name to soundtrack a film about maverick Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree. Music From Battle Mountain is a lush, looped-up set of electronica that sounds like it would be a perfect accompaniment to slowly accomplishing a big hill. 180g vinyl release in a limited edition of 500 copies. On Chemikal Underground.

Arab Strap
Arab Strap

Look at them there on the sleeve. They look a lot older than that now and to the delight of their fans have reformed for a few shows this October. To tie in with this comes this compilation of some of their best bits as well as rarities and B sides etc.  Arab Strap were always a lot more than their pished up image suggested with lots of gorgeous music backing Aidan Moffatt's slurred tales.

FOUND
Terra Nova

FOUND produced the music presented on Terra Nova as part of a commission for a project that considered the fate of the 1910 Antarctic expedition ship of that name. Naturally, synthesisers were used to represent this adventure: at least they can capture the icy chill of those frozen wastes. LP edition on Chemikal Underground, limited to 300 copies.

Rick Redbeard
Awake Unto

Rick Redbeard is the solo alias of Rick Anthony, principal member of Scottish cosmic rock dudes The Phantom Band. Awake Unto is his second solo album and follow up to No Selfish Heart. Redbeard is influenced by the folkish poetic musings of Leonard Cohen, Bill Callahan and Michael Hurley. Awake Unto, like his debut, covers themes of love, sex, death and dreams but here the ambiguity is replaced by a more head-on approach.

RM Hubbert
Telling The Trees

RM Hubbert is a Scottish singer-songwriter making music in that fine tradition: morose but funny, tough but beautiful. On Telling The Trees he collaborates with a wide array of vocalists, including Rachel Grimes, Kathryn Williams and Martha Ffion. Without Hubbert’s gruff voice, his music is an intriguingly different proposition. On Chemikal Underground.

Emma Pollock
In Search of Harperfield

It has taken nearly six years but Emma Pollock has finally followed up her marvellous album The Law Of Large Numbers with  In Search of Harperfield. The album nods in the direction of great female artists such as Kate Bush, Sandy Denny, Dusty Springfield and Kristin Hersh whilst Emma’s vocals recall the talents of Annie Lennox and Siouxsie Sioux. Emma’s songwriting ability and gift for melody set her apart from the pack. The album was produced by fellow ex-Delgado Paul Savage. In Search of Harperfield will please fans of The Delgados and is already regarded as one of the best albums in the Chemikal Underground cannon.

FOUND
Cloning

In the four years since their 2011 album, Factorycraft, Scottish folktronica band, Found have reduced their numbers to become a duo of founding members Ziggy Campbell and Kev Sim. On their new album, Cloning, the guitars are replaced a thick fog of analogue synths as the duo introduce new influences into their music such as groundbreaking ‘60s electronic duo Beaver & Krause, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and the soundtracks of John Carpenter.

Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells
DILF_77 Would Like To Talk

I’ll bet you don’t own a record titled anything even close to this. Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells’ new work, DILF_77 Would Like To Chat is a mini-album of their excellent collaboration, Moffat’s gruff poetics over Wells’ chamber orchestration. The title track is all about disco. CD EP, exclusive to independent shops, on Chemikal Underground.

Miaoux Miaoux
School Of Velocity

Miaoux Miaoux’s new and second album School of Velocity is so bright and shiny you should probably put on sunglasses before listening to it. Wild electro pop that just piles synth upon synth, this could certainly soundtrack some exciting times over the course of your summer. Released by Chemikal Underground.

The Phantom Band
Fears Trending

Some big sounds from Scots The Phantom Band. Fear Trending is the next installment from the half-dozen bunch. It's full of rocky guitars, wacky electronics and sincere Celtic crooning. It's proggy, post-rockish and has simple melodies which act as a contrast to the raucous instrumental madness. Out on vinyl LP and CD from Chemikal Underground.

Sound of Yell
Sound of Yell

Searching mood variations from Sound of Yell (aka Stevie Jones), on their new self-titled record. Exploring the textured and timbral effects of acoustic instruments, Sound of Yell takes you on a sonic folksy voyage. At times akin to Sufjan Steven's orchestrations, whilst juxtaposed Radiohead's dark angst, SoY is an intriguing listen. Out on vinyl LP and CD on Chemikal Underground.

Adrian Crowley
Some Blue Morning

This new record from Adrian Crowley sees the songwriter further expand his folk oeuvre; six records in, his lyrical style has become as measured and distinct as a Bill Callahan, while his arrangements are able to bring out the same intricacies as Lambchop 'Some Blue Morning' is the work of a folk professional.

Conquering Animal Sound
Talking Shapes

Indietronica duo Conquering Animal Sound are releasing their first new work in over a year, following on from the lush and propulsive tactics employed for 2013's 'On Floating Bodies'. This 12" EP surveys the concepts and constructs of "gender and language", while taking a poppier approach to songwriting, with more traditional verse/chorus changeovers.

RM Hubbert
The Ampersand Extras

Former El Hombre Trajeado guitarist RM Hubbert's 'Ampersand Trilogy' of solo albums have really established him as a formidable solo guitarist with a flamenco-inspired but still very Scottish sound. The collaboration-heavy 'Thirteen Lost and Found' even netted him the Scottish Album of the Year award. Those who are sad that the trilogy is finished will be delighted to see that here we have the fourth Ampersand album, mopping up the deleted scenes and Easter eggs that didn't fit on the albums but were too good not to release.

The Phantom Band
Checkmate Savage

2009 is currently being raided for forgotten gems that can be re-pressed to ensure the worlds vinyl is still put to good use. The latest is the debut of The Phantom Band which came out on Chemikal Underground. The same label have re-issued the record in all its glory and for the uninitiated this six piece band play an idiosyncratic form of music that takes in krautrock, blues and art rock. Time to get belatedly on board.
