The Hold Steady
Thrashing Thru The Passion

The Hold Steady have been making a slow, but...ahem...steady comeback recently. Their new album, Thrashing Thru The Passion, is the culmination of that steady comeback. It contains five songs recorded between 2017 and 2019 that have only been downloadable until now, and five brand new bar room bangers.

Miss June
Bad Luck Party

After introducing themselves with a number of excellent singles, 'Bad Luck Party' sees the promising New Zealand-based quartet Miss June tackle the full-length album. Signed with impeccable NY label Frenchkiss, they deal in raging, full-blown riffs while retaining the cerebral aspects of the DIY scene that spawned them.

The Antlers
Hospice

O.M.G. it's the 10th anniversary of The Antlers 'Hospice' so literally put everything that you are doing down and re-buy the album that Pitchfork gave a whopping 8.5 out of 10 to in 2008. Re-live its swooning and emotional mid-paced indie, glacial atmospheric synth work, heartfelt trumpets and random noise bursts. It's just like Arcade Fire were a shoegaze band.

Valley Maker
Rhododendron

Valley Maker is the project of Seattle-based songwriter Austin Crane. On Rhododendron, taking inspiration from the likes of Gillian Welch, Bill Fay and Jason Molina, he sings about moving from one thing, place or belief to another. With all this movement, however, comes a firm-footed reassurance that he’s not going anywhere. LP and CD on French Kiss.

Eleanor Friedberger
Rebound

Rebound is the fourth solo album by Eleanor Friedberger, which follows 2016’s New View. Since going solo from The Fiery Furnaces, a band she was in with her musically...er...interesting brother, Friedberger has quietly been getting on with her business and writing some pretty classy indie rock, taking inspiration from The Beatles through to ‘70s folk-pop. LP and CD on Frenchkiss.

Island
Feels Like Air

London youngsters Island have been making waves with their fervent indie pop over a couple EPs and their single Try, which is taken from their debut album Feels Like Air. There’s a limited edition coloured vinyl version if you’re quick, otherwise you can get black vinyl and a lavishly packaged CD. On French Kiss.

Diet Cig
Swear I’m Good At This

Diet Cig don't create over-serious or pretentious material - instead this punk duo beam honest creativity that is both minimal and candid. Alex Luciano and Noah Bowman return with Swear I'm Good At This - a highly anticipated record bound to initiate a steep and rapid ascent into the stratosphere.

The Hold Steady
Almost Killed Me

Almost Killed Me is the debut album of The Hold Steady, the band who managed to ascend bar-band rock’n’roll to a high art form. Craig Finn writes about the minutiae of young American life with a poet’s eye for detail, and this debut begins the saga of his character Charlemagne. Almost Killed Me has been remastered and bolstered with a handful of bonus tracks for this reissue on CD and (blue) vinyl.

The Hold Steady
Separation Sunday

Separation Sunday is the second album by The Hold Steady, the band who ascended bar-band rock’n’roll to a high art form. Craig Finn writes about the minutiae of young American life with a poet’s eye for detail, and Separation Sunday continues the stories of characters introduced in their debut album. Remastered and bolstered with a handful of bonus tracks for this reissue on CD and (white) vinyl.

Drowners
On Desire

Despite having a reasonable level of success with their first album, New York based (with a hint of Welsh) outfit Drowners second LP is filled with uncertainty and darkness. This time round the band write the songs collaboratively rather than coming from the pen of singer Matt Hitt. Still, their brand of dark post punk will appeal to fans of Interpol, Echo and the Bunnymen etc.

Eleanor Friedberger
New View

One half of Fiery Furnaces returns with her third solo album, New View. Eleanor Friedberger brings her distinctive attitude to some summery and upbeat indie-pop. Her singular voice ties together this collection of playful rock and pop and her more experimental interests are kept in check by ridiculously catchy melodies. CD and LP on Frenchkiss.
