TINT
Ricochet Screen

An intriguing record of sound collages from New York artist TINT here. Ricochet Screen builds its compositions up from found sounds and field recordings, often of general chit chat. Over this TINT puts anything from distorted bass guitar (‘Purr XYZ’) to beautiful, Debussy-esque piano improvisations (‘Earth D423’). It’s not unlike the best bit of Yves Tumor’s repertoire. This LP is out via Root Strata (Richard Youngs, Grouper).

Roger Tellier Craig
Instantanes

Yet another three-named Craig in ambient music, eh? Robert Tellier Craig has actually been around for a good while in Montreal outfits La Revelateur and the cataclysmic avant crew Fly Pan Am -- now he's out on Root Strata making work he envisions to be "concrète music of the poor", taking the hierarchy out of this longstanding experimental music. Instantanés has been workshopped over a decade.

Hisato Higuchi
Kietsuzukeru Echo

Japanese guitarist and vocalist Hisato Higuchi records entirely at home and creates incredibly delicate and minimal soft “songs” that are almost a whisper, someone learning chords in the distance whilst humming ghost melody ideas. You can’t turn it up because the recording hiss will overpower it, it is meant to be this gentle, ease into it.

No UFO's
Nu LP For RS

As the to-the-point title of Nu LP for RS states, this vinyl LP on Root Strata is the debut proper from No UFO’s, aka Konrad Jandavs. This artist uses found sounds, weird drones, tape manipulation and field recordings, all deliriously mangled together, to create dense and stunning avant-ambient soundscapes.

JS Truchy
Transmission in an Expanse of Firelight, Hear Me!

JS Truchy is a long-running Montreal experimentalist with a full brace of tapes and the like under his belt, but he apparently considers this release to be his first ‘proper’ record. Transmission in an Expanse of Firelight, Hear Me! certainly has the appropriate ambition, being full of grand vocals, harsh noise, strange MIDI-scapes, concréte fumblings… All sorts of sonic wonder to enjoy! LP on Root Strata.

Matt Carlson / Michael Stirling / Doug Theriault
Aakash

Aakash is the first recording of this new constellation of players, wherein Golden Retriever's Matt Carlson and his synthesisers are joined by Michael Stirling’s processed voice and Doug Theriault’s guitar and electronics. 2 sides of mind-expanding electro-ragas is the result, sounding simultaneously grounded in ecstatic tradition and sonically fresh. 300 copies on Root Strata.

Byron Westbrook
Precipice

Precipice sees electronic ambient artist Byron Westbrook stepping out from under his Corridors moniker to make his first album under his own name. Precipice is 4 lush soundscapes that swell and rest with an amount of control rarely seen in ambient music. Precipice definitely raises the bar in its genre.

Vision Heat
The Chosen Themes - Program I

Vision Heat is the eighties production inspired project of Jared Blum's (of GiganteSound, The Talking Book, Blanketship, Vulcanus 68). Influenced by a wealth of soundtrack scores from John Carpenter to Harold Faltermeyer, ‘The Chosen Themes’ crosses genres from weirdo sci-fi tension builders to uplifting, cinematic synth pop reminiscent of early John Hughes movies.

Sean McCann
Ten Impressions for Piano & Strings

This really rather yellow release on Root Strata finds Sean McCann using the titular Piano & Strings to beautiful effect, sounding at once ambient and conventionally ‘classical’. Would suit A Winged Victory For The Sullen fans very nicely, though these perhaps feel closer to ‘compositions’ than that group’s ‘songs’. Spacious and emotionally intense.

Christina Carter
Masque Femine

Vocal artist Christina Carter released the elusive 'Masque Femine' back in 2008, unleashing a stunning work of sparse and honest songs that bled together in her almost ambient approach to a capella. The record can be seen as one of her attempts to deconstruct what it is for a piece of music to be considered "a song", and it can now be heard on vinyl.

Le Revelateur
Extreme Events

Retro-futurist sound-scapery from Montreal sound/installation artist Roger Tellier-Craig, popping up again on Root Strata to deliver a dazling array of textural forms, glitch symphonies and other astonishing electronic wonderment. Loosely inspired by cyberpunk author William Gibson, this promised to be a sonic tour-de-force.
