Singaporeans Evening Chants seem to be ever on the lookout for beautiful gems to spread to the rest of the world. The Japanese word kwaidan (怪談) could be translated vaguely as ‘ghost/horror story’, but its noticeably old-fashioned connotation of Edo-era folklore is what chiefly interests Hiroshima artist Meitei on this here spooky outing for Evening Chants. Lo-fi, collagist approaches to traditional and speech samples and a few of the ol’ bare-bones beats inform his playful, eerie style.
