Stirling March
Under Cover Lover

A long-overdue reissue on Kalita records of Stirling March’s cult favourite single Under Cover Lover, originally released back in 1985. Given a makeover with a welter of liner notes, interviews and exclusive photos, this Bahamian boogie fell by the wayside upon original release due to improper promotion, but has since become one of the rarest records of its genre.

Julie Coker
A Life In The Limelight: Lagos Disco & Itsekiri Highlife 1976-1981

It’s not often that we get in a record by a former Miss Western Nigeria. It’s also not often that we get in a record by a woman who was her country’s first ever female television presenter. But then again, Julie Coker is not your average artist. A friend of Fela Kuti during her heyday, the Nigerian singer and television personality is now honoured with her first compilation courtesy of Kalita Records. A Life In The Limelight: Lagos Disco & Itsekiri Highlife 1976-1981 draws from Coker's Tomorrow and Ere Yon (Sweet Songs) albums. This is a superb collection of boogie and highlife to add to the collection. Bonus points for those of you who spotted that ‘Ere Yon’ was recently re-worked by Anderson .Paak on his Oxnard LP.

Emerson
If You Need Me, Call Me

A very, very long-awaited first release for If You Need Me, Call Me, a near-mythical album from 1988 from Emerson. The set includes unreleased demo versions of his similarly desirable single ‘Sending All My Love Out’, and the rest of the LP consists of other synth/drum-machine led boogie jewels.

Okyerema Asante
Sabi (Get Down)

The first you need to know that this track is fourteen minutes long. Ghanaian musician Okyerema Asante's Sabi (Get Down) is an entire disco all on its own. Released in the early 80s it has been long sought after and has featured in sets by Giles Peterson, Hunee and Lakuti. The b-side, 'That's My Girl' is just as mighty. Reissued by Kalita Records.

Kallaloo
Star Child

Reissued for the first time: a splendid, sought-after Caribbean disco number from 1982 with uplifting duet vocals, bass too hot for TV, psychedelic guitar and synth and drums with enough claps to wear out an entire production line of sound-activated switches. Side A is the five-minute ‘Short Version’, which is all well and good, but the titular child really shines on the eight-minute side B version.

Carrie Cleveland
Looking Up: The Complete Works

Carrie Cleveland’s 1978 LP Looking Up is catnip to record collectors and connoisseurs. Recording alongside her husband in their home studio, Cleveland is a poised and charismatic presence atop instrumentals that range from swooning soul (‘Take A Moment’) to dancefloor boogie (the acclaimed ‘Love Will Set You Free’). Original copies are hard to source - just 1000 were pressed on first release - so Kalita Records have done the decent thing and reissued the album. They’ve expanded the original Looking Up package with rarities and detailed liner notes.
