The Music Of Red Dead Redemption II

It’s time to separate Red Dead Redemption 2 from ‘Old Town Road’ in your mind once and for all. Despite initially doing the rounds cut to footage from the smash-hit video game, Lil Nas X’s all-conquering tune actually never appeared on the OST to the Rockstar Games effort. But don’t fret, this Lakeshore edition of the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack includes plenty of wide-open-prairie tunes to make up for the absence of ‘Old Town Road’. Josh Homme, D’Angelo and Willie Nelson are among those featured.

Emile Mosseri
The Last Black Man In San Francisco (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Joe Talbolt’s (Not the IDLES guy!) film The Last Black Man In San Francisco is based on his childhood friend. The soundtrack is by Emile Mosseri from NYC alt. rockers, The Dig. He has previously contributed to the music of HBO comedy Random Acts of Flyness and the film, How To Tell You’re A Douchebag. As well as Mosseri’s music, there’s a version of Scott MacKenzie’s Summer of Love classic, San Francisco, performed by Michael Marshall from ‘80s R&B group, Timex Social Club.

Henry Jackman
The Predator

The new Predator film isn’t a budget affair, oh no. They had the budget on hand to not only commission Henry Jackman to provide the score, but also to bring in a 180 piece orchestra to record it. That means that there both tremendous scale and tremendous detail are available to Jackman, and he makes full use on this dramatic OST. Released by Lakeshore Records.

John Murphy
Les Misérables (Original Series Soundtrack)

Did you watch that BBC 'Les Miserables' series? Well if you did you'll know that it didn't use the music from the acclaimed musical version of this classic novel but instead there was a score from John Murphy (‘Sunshine’, ‘28 Weeks Later’, ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ composer and not the guy from Shoes).

Fangoria presents: Hollydoom (Original Magazine Soundtrack)

Fans of US horror movie magazine, Fangoria, were no doubt beside themselves when it ceased to be printed back in 2015. It’s return has been welcomed by many horror-obsessed types across the globe. I think Fangoria are quite pleased with themselves too, as they’ve released an album of horror movie themed music, old and new. 'Hollydoom' features tracks from John Carpenter, Daniel Davies, Ogre, Gunship and Power Glove.

Dan The Automator
Booksmart (Original Motion Picture Score)

Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut 'Booksmart' has garnered plenty of plaudits, not least for its charming soundtrack. We’re used to hearing Dan The Automator in hip-hop mode, and you can be sure to find plenty of breaks and beats across his compositions here. However, these more standard tricks come twinned with some of the most widescreen and ambitious arrangements the producer has ever attempted - chamber strings, 70’s cop-show guitars and library funk are all thrown into the mix on the 'Booksmart OST'.

BoJack Horseman

Original soundtrack to the acclaimed animated celebrity satire BoJack Horseman. The show follows the life of its title character, a burnt out celebrity horse who was famous for generic 90s sitcom ‘Horsin’ Around’. The soundtrack features the score - composed by Jesse Novak  - as well as songs made for the show by The Black Keys Patrick Carney, among older tracks from classic artists like Nina Simone. This LP from Lakeshore Records comes out on a limited run of picture disc editions.

Fabio Frizzi
Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Fabio Frizzi, being one of those infinitely productive film-soundtracking Italians, naturally provided the soundtrack to brand new (but old-school) horror comedy film Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich. Yep, this is brand new Frizzi material, with all the dramatic cues and scary sonics you’d expect. Plus Richard Band’s Puppet Master theme. On Lakeshore Records.

Randy Miller
Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth

Unsurprisingly, Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth is the third film featuring Pinhead, based on characters from novels by horror writer Clive Barker. The film featured a bunch of heavy metal songs by the likes of Motorhead and KMFDM, but to provide true dramatic tension, it also had an orchestral score composed by Randy Miller. This is the score’s first vinyl release, which is pressed on red with black smoke coloured vinyl and features liner notes by Miller.

Assassination Nation is a blackly comedic film that has made an impact, no doubt with some help from this fine score work. This soundtrack release includes all of Hultquist’s cues and themes, as well as other songs featured in the film. On Lakeshore Records.

Mark Korven
Our House

Another horror soundtrack from The Witch's Mark Korven. For Our House, Korven tracks the titular home's steady sink into the supernatural after it's lead build a machine that amplifies the otherworldly. Korven's score starts out high and melodic, before slowly becoming deeper, more droney, and much more ominous.

Daniel Pemberton
One Strange Rock (Original Series Soundtrack)

One Strange Rock is Darren Aronofsky and National Geographic’s documentary about the planet Earth, told with a literally out-of-this-world perspective (e.g. by astronauts). It's a massive, large-scoped project that naturally requires a suitably big soundtrack, and Daniel Pemberton delivers this in spades. Here is his soundtrack work, sequenced into a double album that’s meant to be sat down and properly listened to. On Lakeshore Records.

Napoleon Dynamite (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

A vinyl edition of Napoleon Dynamite’s soundtrack is available outside of the United States for the first time. It’s a relatively comprehensive release - anyone looking for, say, ‘We’re Going To Be Friends’ by The White Stripes will be left disappointed (we presume that’s due to licensing issues), but there’s still over forty audio clips here that range from snippets of movie dialogue to Bow Wow Wow’s ‘I Want Candy’. Issued on ‘electric liger blue’ vinyl courtesy of Lakeshore.

Trevor Morris
Castlevania

A deluxe presentation of the soundtrack to Netflix TV adaptation of the classic video game Castlevania. Trevor Morris handled the soundtracking duties here, craftily turning beloved old 8-bit themes into broader compositions. The packaging of this double LP is rather lush, containing artwork drawn from throughout the series’ history. On Lakeshore Records.

Humans
Dead Shack (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Horror movie fans will be pleased to see that the soundtrack for Shudder film Dead Shack is getting its own vinyl release. The music was penned by Canadian electro-pop duo HUMANS and captures the zeitgeist for spooky sounds. That means that there’s a pinch of Stranger Things, a dash of Drive and more than a little Vangelis to their score. Released on pink vinyl by Lakeshore.

Ramin Djawadi
The Mountain Between Us

Having previously written music for Iron Man and Game of Thrones, composer Ramin Djawadi gets another crack at the big screen with his score for the Kate Winslet/Idris Elba vehicle The Mountain Between Us. The music here features some classic scoring from the John Williams/Hans Zimmer school played off the sparser, icier stylings of the likes of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

The Lure (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The Lure is a bit of a strange one, a Polish contemporary vampiric horror flick that also explores the uncertainty of childhood and social strain. A rather unlikely film to enjoy a soundtrack release, were it not for the fact that the film is set around a sort of underground cabaret night, and also exists as a musical. Of course.

Aesop Rock
Bushwick

Leftfield hip hop champ Aesop Rock is as deft on the buttons as he is on the mic, and his soundtrack to Brooklyn-based civil war drama Bushwick has been the perfect vehicle for him to stretch his legs and show off the hidden depths of his beatsmithery. From noirish mood pieces to more conventional grooves, it’s a rich listening experience on its own, hence it’s getting the deluxe release treatment from Lakeshore Records.

Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL
Distance Between Dreams

Honestly thought that this was a soundtrack release for some Beach Boys-themed action flick. With OST credits such as Deadpool, Mad Max Fury Road and Batman vs Superman, it's easy to forget sometimes that Junkie XL makes standard music too. Here, he combines old-style analog synth sounds with surf guitar, recalling the sounds of Suzanne Ciani and SURVIVE's Stranger Things score.

Marco Beltrami
Logan (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Logan continues (and indeed concludes) Hugh Jackman’s long stint of representing key X-Man Wolverine on the silver screen, and of course such a film requires an appropriate soundtrack. Thankfully Marco Beltrami was on hand to do the honours, and his swooping cinematic compositions are now available on this double LP release from Lakeshore Records.
