Short-Term Memory
Plus or Minus Two

Seance Centre tend towards re-releases of new age/ambient recordings, but as they showed with 2018’s A-Team reissue they also have a penchant for melody-rich dancefloor jams. Their latest drop, Short-Term Memory’s Plus Or Minus Two, falls somewhere between the two camps. Plus Or Minus Two collects four tracks from the Kansas City techno act’s 1983 LP Every Head Needs Cleaning as well as throwing in a couple of unreleased cuts. While numbers like ‘Twitch & Jerk’ and ‘The Words’ are very Devo-ish, ‘City In Mind’ is a spiritualized bit of electronic pop that nods to Pablo’s Eye and My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.

Philip Sanderson
On One Of These Bends

Philip Sanderson, one half of late ‘70s Deptford DIY post punks, Storm Bugs, changed his musical direction in the early ‘80s and moved into soundtrack work. If you can imagine the music of Godfather score composer Nino Rota, or Henry Mancini produced with a DIY esthetic and an orchestra built up from various analogue synths, acoustic instruments and tape experiments then that’s what you get with On One Of These Bends.

MJ Lallo
Star Child

Whilst soundtracking films for Nasa and Levi’s MJ Lallo also produced fantastical interstellar-boogie using her voice, drum machines and synths. Canadian label Séance Centre have committed themselves to releasing as much of MJ Lallo’s back catalogue as they can. Firstly with the Star Child 12”. These three tracks cover slap funk, to deep ambient exploration, with Aquarius Blue even touching on slow jam territory.

MJ Lallo
Take Me With You

Sadly nothing to do with Prince’s Purple Rain highlight, Take Me With You is in fact a collection of home-recordings made by sound artist/experimental poet MJ Lallo back in the 80's. These New Age-y combos of drum computer, cosmic synthesiser effects and Lallo’s highly processed vocals slot neatly into the discography of a label like Seance Centre (Sam McClellan, Joanne Forman). Think Laraaji, Stereolab, Laurie Anderson ...

Beverly Glenn-Copeland
...Keyboard Fantasies...

A cratedigger favourite for some time, Beverly Glenn-Copeland once released two albums of Joni Mitchell-aping folk-jazz that now go for high prices among collectors. What we have here, however, is a 1986 album recorded entirely on DX-7 and TR-707 that sounds like a strange hybrid of Calling out of Context-era Arthur Russell, new age positivism and post-Blade Runner synth work. The album would be nothing, however, without BGC’s gorgeous baritone. A treat.

Sam McClellan
Music Of The Five Elements

Seance Centre see fit to repress Sam McClellan’s 1982 New Age work Music Of The Five Elements. McClellan - a musician who moonlights as an acupressurist - concerned himself with making music to heal after he finished studying electronic composition at Hampshire College. Using the pentatonic scale and Chinese philosophy as guiding principles for his work, McClellan composed a ‘Focussing’ and ‘Gathering’ piece for each of the five elements. The result is not always tranquil, but often beautiful, reminiscent of Eno and prefacing Spacemen 3.

Joanne Forman
Cave Vaults Of The Moon

Seance Centre (Visible Cloaks, Beverly Glenn-Copeland) offer up a recording of Joanne Forman’s 1987 piece Cave Vaults Of The Moon. Originally conceived as a soundtrack for an exhibition of sculptures in Taos, New Mexico, Forman uses an unusual combination of instruments - Juno 106, flute, guitar and more - to create soundscapes of both beauty and curiosity.

Eblen Macari
Musica Para Planetarios

Musica Para Planetarios is a ten track release from Eblen Macari. This classic record has been reissued on LP from Seance Centre. Originally based on the Mexican guitar and electronic artist's live performances in the Luis Enrique Erro Planetarium in Mexico City to accompany a journey through our galaxy... metaphorically, of course. Enjoy.

A-Team
Trouble

Seance Centre tend to focus on the more ambient end of things - recent drops have included works by Visible Cloaks and Joanna Forman - but this release sees them straying into disco territory. Back in 1982, A-Team holed up in Mad Professor’s studio to record these versions of their tune ‘Trouble’. The original is a bracing mix of Arthur Russell-style NYC disco, ESG’s spare punk-funk and dub atmospherics, while both the 'Club Mix' and 'BH Club Dub' are great dancefloor jams. File next to Liquid Liquid and Optimo.

Michel Banabila
Trespassing

Dutch sound boy Michel Banabila compiled a fantastic showing with Sound Years, on which his multitude electronic talents were made evident to the ambient ear. Trespassing is another assembling of tracks, over two LPs, that see Banabila's life reflected in his art, especially in the record's second half, Marilli, which was made in a drug-hazed time squatting in the '80s. Lots of photos and words come with this record of tinkering electronic varieties and accidental pop trances.
