Wovenhand
Early Wovenhand

As you may have picked up from the title, Early Wovenhand is a collection of the first records from David Eugene Edwards’ Wovenhand project. It’s easy to forget now that seemingly every second singer-songwriter is going for that mid-period Nick Cave sound, but back in the early 2000s Wovenhand’s mixing of folk, country, post-punk and a generally Southern Gothic air was pretty innovative. This collection of newly-remastered LPs allows Edwards to show the young pretenders how it’s done.

Distance, Light & Sky
Gold Coast

Distance, Light & Sky features three excellent musicians from different areas of music, and the common ground they find together is wonderful to hear. Chantal Acda, whose voice has previously been heard atop Sleepingdog’s billowing drones, here has an Americana-melancholy to her lyrics and vocals, and with Eric Thielemans and Chris Eckman, all recording in the same room at the same time, they’ve created some fine-grained, heartfelt music here.

Spain
Mandala Brush

Spain return to Glitterhouse Records with their seventh studio LP. Josh Haden wanted to capture the energy of the band’s concerts on Mandala Brush. As such, all songs were recorded live and without a click track. This results in a nice ebb and flow to the brooding Americana-noir of tracks like ‘Maya In The Summer’.

Keston Cobblers Club
Wildfire

‘Wildfire’ is the fifth album release from folk sextet Keston Cobblers Club. Inspired by the British power pop scene and Glasgow’s dreamy indie pop, this record is a collection of sweet anthemic songs built out of swelling orchestral and choral arrangements creating a blanket fort of vocals over their folky foundations.

David Eugene Edwards & Alexander Hacke
Risha

With many years of familiar friendship and performances together in groups between them, now is the time for Alexander Hacke (of Einstürzende goddamn Neubauten) and David Eugene Edwards (16 Horsepower) to reveal their first full-length collaborative album together. Risha is dramatic rock music with a wide horizon. Out via Glitterhouse.

Chantal Acda
The Sparkle In Our Flaws

Chantal Acda may be familiar through Sleepingdog, her rich collaboration with Adam Wiltzie of Stars Of The Lid. The Sparkle In Our Flaws has her melancholy vocals floating above delicate instrumental constructions to which Peter Broderick and Shahzad Ismaily contributed. An accomplished, drifty record, on Glitterhouse.

Spain
Live At The Lovesong

What. A. Life. One morning Spain’s Josh Haden woke up and thought "You know, I'd like to go on tour in L.A.” We’ve all been there. Thing is Josh made it actually happen and his band booked a residency at an LA speakeasy called The Love Song Bar. He also taped the results which you can hear on this album.

Chantal Acda
Bounce Back

Bounce Back is the latest release from Chantal Acda. In this record she explains how she wanted to step away from overly produced vocals and concentrate on how the vocals sound in her head. A clever mix of subtle indie-pop and rock combined with experimental electronica. Available on Vinyl LP and CD.

Christine Owman
When On Fire

When on Fire, thou shalt release a haunting electro-pop album that is both catchy and depressing - thus spake Christine Owman, who wrote and produced her newest release on Glitterhouse. The record sounds like those midnight fantasies that’ve gone awry but from which you still don’t want to wake up. And that's a good thing, probably.

The Walkabouts
Feel Like Going Home: Cover Albums

Here are the two much-admired Cover Albums that The Walkabouts released, pressed to double vinyl for the first time ever. As well as those seminal works of alt-country, the Feel Like Going Home set adds two live concert recordings. Everything has been remastered, and everything is included on CD (four of them) as well as vinyl (three double LPs). Wonderful! On Glitterhouse.

Immanu El
Hibernation

The fourth album from Sweden’s Immanu El is as grandiose as the surroundings it was made in. Written and rehearsed in an old regiment building in Stockholm, recorded in a Florentine hill-top studio, the cavernous organs and reverb-soaked drums here recall the production of WU LYF’s Go Tell Fire to the Mountain and the mid-periods of both Arcade Fire and Bon Iver. Produced by the Swedish Grammy nominated Johan Eckeborn. Vinyl and CD. Out on Black Friday.

16 Horsepower
Hoarse

Denver's alt-country bellyachers, head-scratchers and hand-prayers: 16 Horsepower wrote religious songs and filtered them through a modern and often urgent version of the musical traditions they were in love with. Live, their music became more ferocious and strong-willed, and 'Hoarse' is an example of the band breaking into a sweat and letting it rain. 16 Horsepower could be punks, too, and cover the Gun Club and Joy Division on this recording -- as well as the slightly less punk Creedence Clearwater Revival, but you know.

Rodrigo Leao & Scott Matthew
Life Is Long

Rodrigo Leao and Scott Matthew first worked together on a single song on Leao’s album The Magic Mountain, but now their collaboration has flowered into a full-length suite. Life Is Long matches Mathew’s smooth-and-deep vocals with languidly dramatic orchestration. This is high-class stuff. Released by the Glitterhouse label.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club
The Commandments According To Scac

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club really really like the dark gothic underside of American life, and The Commandments According To Scac was apparently written with Flannery O’Connor and William Faulkner in mind. The music is a good match, with a soulful old-timey folk-American feel. Released by Glitterhouse.

Wovenhand
Star Treatment

Come burn the barn with Wovenhand and their countrified punk rock. For those not in the know, these folks were sprung from the imagination of David Eugene Edwards, who usually played in 16 Horsepower. One might argue this band had a more blistering pace and allowed Edwards to go a bit harder, with thrashing drums, flailing guitars and a hard rock vocal boom. 'Star Treatment' is a ragged, raucous record and, hey, guess what, Steve Albini's studio recorded it.

Spain
Carolina

Spain is the long-running band project of Josh Haden. Josh’s father was in fact Charlie Haden, the big-deal free jazz bassist who played in Ornette Coleman’s classic quartet, and his recent death appears to have been an influence on the americana-tinged Carolina, the first new music from the group in a while. On Glitterhouse.

Vita Bergen
Disconnection

Disconnection is the first full-length album from Vita Bergen, a Swedish band who’ve been creating a fair bit of heat since their Curtains EP. Plenty of the chaos of their live shows has been channeled into this record, but so has a fair deal of hushed, chiming intimacy, as in ‘Schoolyard’. Disconnection is released by Glitterhouse.

Joe Volk
Happenings and Killings

Joe Volk’s CV is an impressive thing, taking in membership of Gonga and Crippled Black Phoenix as well as a split with Boris. As a solo artist, he has often worked with deep, dark folk sounds: some of that is here on Happenings and Killings, but we also have orchestral sweep and electronic action. Out on Glitterhouse.

Nive & The Deer Children
Feet First

With Feet First, Nive & the Deer Children blend bittersweet melodies with the traditional music of their home in Greenland. Nive Nielson leads the group with her precise vocals and delicate ukelele playing, but there’s plenty of unusual instruments and lovely folk harmonies from the band as well.

XIXA
Bloodline

Raucous, psychedelic rock from XIXA. On Bloodline the group cite West African desert blues and raw Latin music. So, the percussion borrows from cumbia sounds, whilst the organs and heavy guitar come from 1970s hard rock. The final result is playful, tripped out rock available on CD and vinyl LP (which kindly also includes the CD).

Joe Volk
Happenings & Killings

Joe Volk’s history lies with bands of great heaviness: Gonga and Crippled Black Phoenix in particular. As a solo artist he delves into melancholy songwriting, and Happenings & Killings is his most sonically broad work yet. Help comes from Ben Salisbury, who provided electronics and arrangements for the Bristol Ensemble Orchestra, and Billy Fuller and Geoff Barrow of Beak>.

The White Birch
Star Is Just A Sun

The White Birch spent a full decade away between 2005 and 2015, when they returned with The Weight Of Spring. Now they are back in business, what better time to reissue Star Is Just A Sun, their early 2000’s masterpiece. Tender, sensitive, near-ambient slowcore music of impressive emotional weight. Remastered and reissued by the Glitterhouse label.

Die Nerven
Out

A sleazy slice of nihilistic post-punk from Germany’s Die Nerven. Their third album Out is dripping with the confidence of a band in forward motion. As understated as a Sonic Youth album track and as groovy as a Swans megajam this is one hell of a ride. Out on CD and vinyl LP from Glitterhouse.

SEA + AIR
Evropi

SEA + AIR are a married duo with a pan-european outlook. Evropi is their second record of what they call ‘ghost pop’: this term doesn’t seem to refer to hauntology, but rather the resurfacing of instruments and styles of old Europe in the midst of full-blown pop songs. Evropi is released on the Glitterhouse label.

Scott Matthew
This Here Defeat

Following an album of covers in 2013’s Unlearned, Scott Matthew arrives with This Here Defeat, an album of his own music. It’s a soft collection of singer-songwriter numbers. Well executed and recorded with sparse instrumentation and a lightness of touch. Out on CD and vinyl + CD from Glitterhouse Records.

Musee Mecanique
From Shores Of Sleep

This indie folk band sound like they just stepped out of a slightly too sincere Wes Andersen film, with gorgeously full arrangements on tinny instruments and with shuffling drums that push them through the streets. 'From Shores of Sleep' is a concept album that holds water as its key motif, and is suitably fluid with its transitions and flourishes. There are horns and they kind of sound like the Decemberists, which is of course a wonderful thing.

The Walkabouts
Nighttown (Deluxe Edition)

First things first, I have to say that this album’s cover is quite impressively uninspiring. Four stock images and some dodgy typefaces? Hmmm… Nevertheless, as a deluxe reissue of The Walkabouts 1997 second album, fully featured with previously unreleased tracks and a booklet, this is the perfect gift for the Walkabouts fan in your life.

The Walkabouts
Devil's Road (Deluxe Edition)

Going down the old dusty trail with The Walkabouts. Devil's Road (Deluxe Edition) is the 1996 reissue from the Seattle group. It's full of Americana styled rock sounds with luscious vocal melodies, country-esque guitars and wistful organs and pianos. They also got a helping hand from the Warsaw Philharmonic on a few tracks for some monumental moments. Out on double vinyl LP and CD from Glitterhouse.

Spain
Sargent Place

Sargent Place is the 7th studio album by slowcore legends Spain. The album is regarded as being the Los Angeles four-piece’s best work since their 1995 debut, The Blue Moods Of Spain. The band are fronted by Josh Haden who is the son of jazz legend Charlie Haden. Sargent Place features a father-son duet and the string playing of Josh’s sister, Petra Haden. The album is named after the street on which the recording studio was situated in LA’s Echo Park. Sargent Place is available on vinyl LP, with CD and CD.

Spain
The Morning Becomes Eclectic Session

Back in 2012 Josh Haden’s Spain did a session for KRCW. The seven-song set has now made it to the pressing plant under the name The Morning Becomes Eclectic Session. Drawing tunes from across the band’s extensive back-catalogue, the intimate feel of these recordings brings new poignancy to the melancholy indiecana of Haden’s songwriting.
