Animal Collective
Sung Tongs

Animal Collective's breakthrough record 'Sung Tongs' is also one of their finest and weirdest. It's a 'listenable' weird though, all playful vocal trade-offs, freaky folk with weird tunings, sunshine psychedelia, campfire chants, and bright chords. If you're looking for a place to start with 21st century psychedelic folk, then this is the one. Avey Tare and Panda Bear sound like they're having an incredible time, mixing the weirdness of Exuma, Sun City Girls and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 with the weird modern folk of Joanna Newsom and Sufjan Stevens, and the breezy pop of The Beach Boys. This one kickstarted the critics love affair with the group which ran until their opus 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' in 2009.

Animal Collective

It's hard to imagine but there was a time when Animal Collective were actual children rather than just pretending to be children. This album comes from way back when where the initial line up of Panda Bear and Avey Tare added Geologist to the line up and collected up radio sessions and live performances by the soon-to-be-lauded trio.
