Aoife Nessa Frances
Land Of No Junction

Land Of No Junction is the debut album by new Irish artist Aoife Nessa Frances. SHe makes music which could be likened to Cate Le Bon, Aldous Harding and Norman Records faves Broadcast but most definitely puts her own indelible stamp on things. The title comes from a trip to Wales as a child when she mis-heard train station Llandudno Junction. It was produced by Cian Nugent. Oh, and her first name is pronounced EE-fa.

Johanna Samuels
Have A Good One

Johanna Samuels makes assured and beautiful songs that would sound at home in the warm ‘70s sun of LA’s Laurel Canyon. She has been inspired to love music by the likes of Neil Young, Tom Petty and Van Morrison, then to make music by Elliott Smith and Jon Brion. This self-titled mini album is her second release. Fans of Aimee Mann will also find plenty to like here. 10” mini album on Basin Rock.

Jim Ghedi
A Hymn For Ancient Land

A Hymn For Ancient Land is Jim Ghedi’s second full length LP and sees his sparse, ethereal folk instrumentation made fuller and bolder through the inclusion of orchestral elements. Having travelled around the British Isles, Ghedi’s music is inspired by the sights and sounds he encountered and named after those places; Home for Moss Valley, Cwm Elan, Bramley Moor exc. The result is an enthralling expanse of folk music which shimmers between an ancient, haunting tradition and a modern ambience.

Julie Byrne
Rooms With Walls and Windows

This is the one before the one that got all the mass acceptance but still managed to get in the top albums of the year in Mojo. Here it has been re-issued with extra tracks. Hers is a hushed fingerpicked world where Leonard Cohen meets Vashti Bunyan.  Beautiful, mystical work. Get on board before she gets even more popular.

Nadia Reid
Preservation

Nadia Reid feels like New Zealand’s answer to Julia Holter, with a beautiful pure-toned voice sitting in the middle of a pristine swirl of complex sound. Preservation is a record born out of international travel and interpersonal heartache, which gives it an emotional depth even greater than Reid’s previous album. Preservation is released by Basin Rock.

Julie Byrne
Not Even Happiness

Julie Byrne, currently a New York resident who has lived a rather nomadic existence, plays gentle, dreamy, ethereal psychedelic folk. He lush voice is backed with strings to match. On her second album Not Even Happiness, is it apparent that Byrne’s talent for pitching a song just right comes as naturally as it did on her 2014 debut Rooms With Walls And Windows. Perfection takes time though, and this album has been a full two years in the making. It’ll be worth it, you’ll see.
