Glenn Jones
This Is The Wind That Blows It Out

Glenn Jones is a maestro of the American Primitive style of guitar playing: that sweet sweet Fahey-derived sound we all love so much. This Is The Wind That Blows It Out is Glenn’s 2004 album, now receiving a vinyl release for the first time courtesy of Thrill Jockey. Rich and beautiful music. Oh and by the way, the inner sleeve artwork includes the notes and tunings for all the songs in case you want to have a go yourself.

Elliott Smith
XO

XO was the moment the previously quiet and retiring songwriter Elliot Smith first attempted his cross into the mainstream. First up it was on Big Label Dreamworks and secondly it was properly produced in a functioning studio. The results you'll be glad to hear were absolutely fine. Though more orchestrated and a bit more polished, his superb craftsmanship shone through. Possibly (alongside Either/Or) the pinnacle of his recording career.

Songs: Ohia
Songs: Ohia

This is where it all started for the late Jason Molina. The eponymous debut LP from his Songs: Ohia venture was released in 1997 as only the fourth catalogue number for the fledgling Secretly Canadian imprint. The slow-/sad-core style that Molina showcased here helped set the tone for the label, the Songs: Ohia project and the late-90’s/early-00’s Americana resurgence. Very beautiful record.

Simon Joyner
Lost With The Lights On

Simon Joyner is a bleak singer-songwriter from out Nebraska way. He is one of those singers who is loved by other more successful artists but remains something of an acquired taste albeit with a cult following. Lost With The Lights On was his 2004 era opus and once again saw Joyner writing darkly poetic songs that drew comparisons with Leonard Cohen.

Songs: Ohia
Ghost Tropic

If we were all still seeing Songs:Ohia's Jason Molina as nothing more than a Will Oldham acolyte then Ghost Tropic should have been the album that suggested he was truly on his own path. It was a more distracted, dislocated record before with lots of spaces between the notes. It has more in common with late period Talk Talk and Scott Walker than it does with any kind of Americana. It is absolutely brilliant and you need to own it.

Smog
The Doctor Came At Dawn

If you don’t have a bit of Bill Callahan in your life then you’re not really doing music right. Arguably the pre-eminent American singer-songwriter of the past couple of decades, Callahan did a lot of his best work under the name of Smog. The fifth Smog LP, 1996’s The Doctor Came At Dawn, is a masterful example of Callahan’s quiet power, all lamp-lit acoustic guitar and portentous musing. The Doctor Came At Dawn was crafted with the help of his sometime collaborator Cynthia Dall.

Richard Buckner
Impasse

Merge reissue Richard Buckner’s grizzled blues-rock classic on vinyl LP and CD. Impasse is an album of sparse guitar music, with a dense lyricism and some lovely arrangements that deserve to be appreciated on this remastered 15th anniversary special edition, complete with additional rare material.

Jim O'Rourke
Insignificance

Jim O’Rourke’s ‘Insignificance’ dates from 2001, which means that he was also in Sonic Youth at the time that it was made. The music here is a sort of best-case scenario for the kind of solo record that would have emerged from this period of O’Rourke’s career, combining the scuffed-up rock style of Sonic Youth with O’Rourke’s whimsical music-hall/folk musings. No wonder that Pitchfork named ‘Insignificance’ among their top 200 albums of the 2000s.

The New Pornographers
Electric Version

Nowadays the sophomore LP from The New Pornographers is probably best known for the fact that it’s almost-title track is playable in an edition of Rock Band. Neat as this is, all you Playstation™ shredders would be wise to keep going after Electric Version’s opening track is finished. The group’s 2003 LP showcases one of history’s finest indie-pop bands at their most exuberant, all fizzed-up energy and sunshine melody. At a time when The Lemonheads were missing in action, The New Pornographers plugged the gap in style.

Beth Orton
Daybreaker

High time for some reissues of Beth Orton albums don’t you think? The Rhino label think so, and thus they have pressed to (180g) vinyl this album, along with Comfort of Strangers. Daybreaker scored into the Top Ten when it was first released in 2002, and it finds Orton in a lounging folktronica mood.

Tom Waits
Mule Variations

Mule Variations, whilst being typical of Tom Waits later work -- mixing experimental sounds, stomping percussion, jazz and beautiful songwriting, is also a high watermark in his career. Notable tracks include the mournful ballad "Georgia Lee", the creepy and original "What’s He Building In There?" and the gravel-edged blues of "Chocolate Jesus". Essential 180g Vinyl reissue on Anti.

Silver Jews
Bright Flight

Bright Flight was Silver Jews 2001 era album and perhaps the one where they started to shake off the lo-fi tag and introduce a more obviously countrified twang to their sound. In fact David Berman had moved to Nashviille to record the album and the musical history of that town seeps through its grooves. Here for the first time Berman duets with wife Cassie resulting in a classic harmonic sound possibly comparable to Neil Young and Emmylou Harris's duets from a couple of decades before.....and then there's the lyrics but if we told you about them we'd be here all day.

Frankie Sparo
Arena Hostile

A few tracks from Frankie Sparo’s debut LP My Red Scare get reworked for new EP Arena Hostile. Originally taped for Dutch radio, this record sees Sparo’s originals fleshed out by a backing band that includes members of A Silver Mt. Zion. With new musicians in tow the likes of ‘Here Comes The Future’ and ‘Diminish Me NYC’ turn into weird anti-songs reminiscent of Slint and The Magnetic Fields. There’s also a Rolling Stones cover to close out Arena Hostile.

Red House Painters
Old Ramon

The Red House Painters recorded their sixth and final album, Old Ramon, in the late nineties, although it took several years for it to be released due to label wranglings. Its consequent ‘legendary lost album’ status turned out to be fairly warranted, as this is one of Mark Kozelek's strongest statements. Reissued on double LP by Sup Pop.

Frankie Sparo
My Red Scare

Not to be confused with Sam Sparro (he of ‘Black And Gold’ fame), Montreal-based singer-songwriter Frankie Sparo released his debut LP My Red Scare through a then-young Constellation Records back in 2000. The album is an impressionistic set of Americana, folk and ambient textures from a time when those things were just starting to come back into fashion. A mournful and often pretty record, My Red Scare can be filed alongside your Bill Callahan and Jessica Bailiff tomes.
