Bill Callahan
Live at Third Man Records

The latest record in Third Man Records’ Live At Third Man Records series finds the label/shop/Jack White vanity project hosting famed alt-country sadster Bill Callahan. The autumnal poetry of The Artist Formerly Known As Smog is magnified in his spare live show. These recordings expertly capture concert Callahan.

Tenci
My Heart Is An Open Field

Chicago-based singer-songwriter Jess Shoman has remarkably developed her bedroom project Tenci to the point of performing as a full band and releasing its debut solo album in little over a year. Arriving via Keeled Scales, My Heart Is An Open Field is a collection of skeletal, sparse and disarming folk.

Cat Power
The Covers Record

Cat Power's 1998 album Moonpix was so good that she had no idea how to follow it up. So instead she set about work on a covers record, taking a wide variety of tracks by the likes of the Rolling Stones, Bill Callahan, Lou Reed and Michael Hurley and making them her own. It may have disappointed fans hoping to hear further original work but it is still a deeply personal and soul searching album.

Red House Painters
Red House Painters / Bridge

Of the two sorta untitled Red House Painters records, Bridge is the perennial underachiever, a record that's more subtle in places and less focused in tone. It makes for something of RHP rock record: a strangely joyous cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "I Am A Rock" appears, as does a gloomy, pantomimic cover of the Star Spangled Banner. There's also some of Kozelek's own songs, which were pretty good back in the day.

Leonard Cohen
Songs of Leonard Cohen

Almost 50 years ago, Leonard Cohen made the move from writing poetry and novels into songwriting, releasing his debut album. Songs of Leonard Cohen is full of crucial numbers like ‘Suzanne’ and ‘So Long, Marianne’, that no student of song can really be without. Plus, can you really do without that cover shot of Laughing Len peering out at you from the shelf? 180g vinyl reissue.

Arbouretum
Let It All In

Let It All In is the tenth album by Baltimore-based folk rock four-piece Arbouretum. The band take their cues from English folk, country, blues, Americana and '70s psychedelia and, in Dave Heumann, have a songwriter with an ear, and voice, for a heartbreaking melody and engaging lyrics. On Thrill Jockey.

Bill Callahan
Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest

Guess what? Bill Callahan got married....and fathered a child. Lovely news but what it has meant is that Bill's music has taken a back seat in recent years to the rigours and glories of family life. He's more that made up for it though with this 20 track album of new material. Don't panic though, not an endless double album these are short, sharp compositions exemplifying his songwriting talents.

Joanna Newsom
Ys

Remember the hype on this? Everyone and their dog proclaiming it to be Album of All Time before it was even released. What do you all think now? Probably that it's ok, that it goes on a bit or that Van Dyke Parks arrangements are as beautiful as they were on first listen. Or maybe you love it like your only child. It's certainly an ambitious work, harps topped off with a squeaky door on tunes that wander thither, hither. If nothing else it still is a unique piece of music.

Jim Ghedi & Toby Hay
The Hawksworth Grove Sessions

For those of you who don't recognise a Leeds road sign when you see one, this album was recorded in Leeds, a mere 40 minutes bus ride along River Aire from Norman Towers. Jim Ghedi and Toby Hay are both virtuoso acoustic guitarists, who together push the limits of British folk musics. The Hawksworth Grove Sessions is utterly overwhelming when at full swing.

Jim White and Marisa Anderson
The Quickening

Well this could be interesting. The Quickening sees the Dirty Three drummer Jim White hook up with folk -informed solo artist Marisa Anderson on an album where both artists let their intuitive and improvisational sides let loose. Anderson's guitar meshes perfectly with White's distinctive drum patterns on evocative music in which both players follow their instinct.

Love Lives Where Rules Die

Recorded in an intense five-day burst in September last year under the aegis of producer Rob Shelton, Love Lives Where Rules Die is the keenly anticipated debut album from Californian songwriter and poet Suzanne Vallie. Hiss Golden Messenger
Devotion: Songs About Rivers and Spirits and Children

North Carolina country/folk type collective Hiss Golden Messenger, led by MC Taylor, have been quietly going about their business for a decade now, releasing 9 albums in that time. It wasn’t until Merge got hold of them and released 2014’s Lateness Of Dancers that they were noticed outside of certain circles. Now, however, their albums grace the upper-echelons of critic’s end-of-year lists regularly. Devotion: Songs About Rivers And Spirits And Children takes us back to their early years with three albums: Bad Debt, Poor Moon and Haw. This box set will also include and exclusive rarities album, Virgin Fool. 4LP box set or 4CD box set, both of which are lavishly packaged.

Brooklyn-based songwriter Dougie Poole further develops his esoteric and diverse indie/country musical hybrid with second studio album, The Freelancer’s Blues. Father John Misty
Live at Third Man Records

Shy and retiring songwriter Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) made a rare public appearance in September 2017 and it just happened to be at Third Man studios on Nashville. Much to his embarrassment presumably, the whole thing was taped and has now been released on an LP. The songs cover all three Father John Misty releases and sees him strip things back a bit compared to the lavish studio arrangements.

Jim Sullivan
U.F.O.

Jim Sullivan was a folkie who haunted the clubs of Malibu in the early '70s but when it came to making an album produced something much more ambitious in scope. It's a deep and yearning work that has something of the Fred Neil about it - a deep listen of cosmic Americana.  Not long after it was completed Sullivan disappeared never to be found so all we have left of him is his masterpiece thankfully re-issued by Light in the Attic.

Jonah Yano
Souvenir

Souvenir is the debut album by Jonah Yano. Yano spent a few years writing songs and honing his musicianship before making any records. The Toronto-based, soulful singer / songwriter fist made an appearance on record collaborating with on the  Moneyphone track On Lock. He has also worked with BADBADNOTGOOD who return the favour by appearing on this album. There are also guest appearances from Monsune and Jacques Greene.

Jeff Buckley
Grace

Despite a number of archival and live albums, Grace was the only full studio album released by Jeff Buckley. Still, high points of the singer-songwriter's celebrated but tragically short career - 'Last Goodbye', 'Hallelujah', 'Lover, You Should Have Come Over' - were part of the collection, and deservedly so.

Jessica Pratt
Jessica Pratt

Pratt by name but not by nature, Jessica Pratt makes a lovely kind of folk music that often sounds like it is covered with 1960s dust. The obvious reference points are Nico and Joni Mitchell but she has her own unique sound which is often startlingly beautiful. Try this debut album which came out on Tim Presley's (White Fence) label.

Diana Collier
Ode to Riddley Walker

Ode To Ridley Walker is the second solo album by ex-Owl Service and Greanvine singer, Diana Collier. Her first solo record, 2016’s All Mortal At Rest, was an album of traditional folk songs. On Ode… she has written most of the songs herself, very much in her own style, which happens to be a fragile and organic version of folk, concerned with nature. It has been likened to Vashti Bunyan.

Out Of My Province is the third album by New Zealand singer / songwriter Nadia Reid. This album sees her hooking up with the Spacebomb crew. Spacebomb is a label co-founded by Matthew E. White who produces all the records and uses the Spacebomb in-house band, which includes White on guitar. They tend to make things a little more funky and soulful than they otherwise would be. Nadia Reid and Spacebomb are an intriguing combination.

Even A Tree Can Shed Tears: Japanese Folk & Rock 1969-1973

This Light In The Attic compilation looks rather fantastic, historicising folk music from the tail-end of 1960s Japan. Cited as a period of growing political and cultural action amongst the country's younger demographic, Even A Tree Can Shed Tears arguably acts as a retrospective to music that was at its time unprecedented, with these artists seeking their own, particular sound through folk music.

Yesterday Is Gone

Vancouver-born Serbian singer Dana Gavanski  releases her debut album, Yesterday is Gone. After a debut, a Christmas album, and a live album, Aidan Moffat and RM Hubbert are ready to say goodbye. The aptly titled 'Cut To Black' is the last thing the two will ever release (or so they say...). Moffat is still doing his sad sing-talk thing, Hubbert is still doing his stylish acoustic guitar thing. Fair play to them for stopping when the going's good.

Saint Alto
Coming / Feel

Birmingham alternative rock / folk quartet Saint Alto (Phil Barber, Alex Dodwell, Dave Hammersley and Tom Ridsdill) have already won plaudits for their transcendent live shows, whose qualities are rare for a band so young. Brian Fallon
Local Honey

You may know Brian Fallon as the singer of U.S. Springsteen-alikes The Gaslight Anthem. On his third album, Local Honey, he leaves the gravelly punk rock behind for a stripped back alt. country feel. Local Honey is supposedly a remedy for hayfever, I absolutely can’t guarantee that this album will ease those symptoms, but you could buy it and give it a go.

Jonathan Hulten
Chants From Another Place

Jonathan Hulten is a grammy winning Swedish artist who looks like a member of Kiss but plays a unique form of music that takes in influences from folk and church choirs as well as the gentle rolling folk of the likes of Nick Drake and Sufjan Stevens. He's certainly confident, calling the album "a journey traversing wastelands of despair...a tale of death and rebirth". Serious stuff.

The Junkyard Liberty
Chains

Due for release on Friday 11th November, debut LP “Chains” comes in the form of a very limited edition transparent blood red vinyl. Released, aptly, into a political landscape of upheaval and unrest, “Chains”, with its provocative slant, is set to strike a chord with people the world over. The ten tracks, whose retro riffs hark back to the likes of the Velvet Underground, will not disappoint.

Bruce Springsteen
18 Tracks

The self-explanatorily titled 18 Tracks was originally released in 1999, aimed at Bruce Springsteen’s more casual fanbase. It was a condensed version of the previous year’s Tracks box set, but notably included ‘The Promise’, an unreleased fan favourite dating back to 1978’s Darkness On The Edge of Town. Now, it arrives as a double-vinyl package.

Red House Painters
Down Colourful Hill

It was the best of times, way back when Mark Kozelek was not awful to his audience and offensive to journalists; back when there was a forlorn band called Red House Painters weaving devastating lyrics in and out of slowcore threnodies. Down Colorful Hill was the very first entry into the band's canon and sees Kozelek slowly wrangle with gorgeous guitar tones and talk about that first initial feeling that you're getting old. The band at their sparsest and sometimes their most uncompromisingly ugly.

Karen Dalton
In My Own Time

In My Own Time was only one of two full length albums Karen Dalton released in her lifetime. It was a tour de force full of interpretations of recent folk and blues tunes by the likes of The Band, Paul Butterfield and George Jones alongside some traditional songs. It showcases her unique neo-Daffy Duck-styled voice against some glittering folk rock arrangements featuring lashings of pedal steel and a big tablespoonful of melancholy.

Bonny Light Horseman
Bonny Light Horseman

Bonny Light Horseman is a coming-together of three of the most talented folk musicians and writers of the last few years - namely, Anaïs Mitchell (writer of Broadway hit ‘Hadestown’), Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats, The Shins) and Josh Kaufman (who's played with the National). A performance at last year’s Eaux Claires festival snowballed into a full album collaboration.

Monolithe Noir
Moira

French musician Antoine Pasqualini was instrumental in the conception of several pop bands in his homeland. He has since moved to Belgium where he spends his time working under the name Monolithe Noir making drone and ambient music, albeit with the beats and melodies of his pop past. His new album Moira features guest vocal performances from Rozi Plain, Peter Broderink and Elsie Dx - artists are who are similar in that they refuse to be pigeonholed.

Waxahatchee
American Weekend

For her first record as Waxahatchee, Katie Crutchfield hauled up in her room with a guitar and a lot of remorse, crafting skeletal folk-punk songs about relationships and romantic non-starters. It's a less electric and rawking affair than her previous work in P.S. Eliot with twin sister Alison (of Swearin'), instead recalling the artists on Plan-It-X as well as Hop Along and Nana Grizol.

Jonathan Wilson
Dixie Blur

Jonathan Wilson follows his hugely critically aclaimed 2018 album 'Rare Birds' with 'Dixie Blur', a far more intimate collection of songs that were written in response to isolation and loneliness. Although Wilson usually crafts recordings alone in his LA studio, on his seventh solo record he recorded and cut the entire LP with a Nashville session band in just six days. Expect unbridled emotion and plenty of fiddle.

Honey Harper
Starmaker

Honey Harper is a US singer / songwriter based in London. He grew up on a diet of Waylon Jennings, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams and with a bit of an Olivia Newton-John obsession born from his mother watching Grease. His debut album, Starmaker, is inspired by Turner’s painting The Decline of the Carthaginian Empire and Joni Mitchell.

Green Gartside
Tangled Man

Green Gartside, the man behind Scritti Politti, has recorded a special 7” featuring two cover versions of songs that were originally recorded by legendary folk singer Anne Briggs. Tangled Man was originally recorded by Anne Briggs in 1971 for her album The Time Has Come, which has recently been reissued if you fancy picking that up, too!

Brigid Mae Power
Head Above The Water

Head Above The Water is the third album from folk singer / songwriter Brigid Mae Power. She recorded the album in Scotland with regular collaborator Peter Broderick and acclaimed Scottish alt-folkie Alasdair Roberts. If you’ve not heard anything by her before, you need to get on board. She has been likened, in terms of arrangement and performance, to greats such as Judee Sill and Bill Callahan.

Jess Williamson
Sorceress

Like a lot of other artists, Texan singer-songwriter Jess Williamson is looking for meaning in her life and in her art. On her fourth album she addresses such issues by way of country music and West Coast psychedelia with nods to Dolly Parton and '70s film soundtracks. She tried to predict what the future will look like in these uncertain times and Mexican Summer have got in on the act by pressing the limited edition vinyl on 'crystal ball' coloured wax.

Grimm Grimm
Ginormous

My mum told me when I was a kid that ginormous wasn't a word and that I should stop using it. Well its in the dictionary and is the title of the debut album from Japan born Londoner Koichi Yamanoha so you are wrong mum, very wrong. Here Yamanoha blends all kinds of sounds together including future folk, electro-acoustic vignettes on an album which describes his journey so far both sonically and emotionally.

She Keeps Bees
Eight Houses

Eight Houses is the fourth album by Brooklyn duo She Keeps Bees. It was originally released in 2014. They are Jessica Larrabee (songwriting, guitar) and Andy LaPlant (drums). They have been compared to Cat Power, among other acts, but they are very much their own people. It’s good stuff, you should try it.

Sound of Yell
Leapling

Stevie Jones is known for his work with El Hombre Trajeado, Arab Strap, Emma Pollock and Alasdair Roberts. He also makes some pleasingly lush, tumbling, folky acoustic music under the name Sound of Yell. On his second album, Leapling, he collaborates with fellow Scots Alex Neilson of Alex Rex / Trembling Bells, Stevie Jackson of Belle and Sebastian, Alasdair Roberts and Vicki Morton of Muscles of Joy / Rev Magnetic.

The Secret Sisters
Saturn Return

Harmonic sisters the Secret Sisters return with their fourth album Saturn Return. They've had a topsy turvy career having been nominated for a Grammy and faced bankruptcy but have overcome everything on an album where they try to make a positive impact on a negative world empowering women like themselves to be strong and inclusive. Lovely close harmony pop compared to the Everly Brothers and the Andrews Sisters.

Sharron Kraus
Friends and Enemies; Lovers and Strangers

For Friends and Enemies; Lovers and Strangers, (the first album title with a semicolon in it that I have seen for a while), Sharron Kraus delved deep into some 11th Century Welsh folk tales, lending a great depth to the delicately constructed pieces here. Excellent contemporary folk song, 500 copies on Clay Pipe Music.

Iron and Wine
Live at Third Man Records

The latest in a seemingly unending, but very welcome, series Live At Third Man, sees Sam Beam bring Iron & Wine to the Blue Room in Nashville. Beam kept his backing band as minimal as possible to make this a genuinely affecting and moving performance. Songs from albums Our Endless Numbered Days, Ghost on Ghost and his rarities compilation, Around The Well are featured.

Douglas Dare
Milkteeth

Milkteeth is the third album by accomplished musician, singer and songwriter Douglas Dare. Dare makes music that could be described as chamber pop and/or art pop. With the help of Tuung’s Mike Lindsay in the producer’s chair, his music has been stripped to just the necessary elements. You may know Douglas Dare from his tours with Erased Tapes label mate Olafur Arnalds or as his drag persona, Visa Reasons.

Alex Rex
Andromeda

Alex Rex, real name Alex Neilson, was the drummer in Scottish folk rockers Trembling Bells, as well as drumming for the likes of Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Shirley Collins, Jandek and Current 93 among others. Andromeda is his third album. It follows Vermillion and Otterburn. Judging by the track ‘Pass the Mask’ this should please fans of Bonnie “Prince” Billy and promises to be a bloody good record. Folk legend Shirley Collins and Belle & Sebastian guitarist Stevie Jackson make guest appearances.

Agnes Obel
Myopia

Myopia is the fourth album by the exceptional Berlin-based Danish singer / songwriter Agnes Obel. It is her first album in three years following 2016’s Citizen Of Glass. With a voice that most people would kill for, on Myopia, Obel explores themes of trust and doubt. Features the single Island Of Doom.

Wilsen
Ruiner

Wilsen are a Brooklyn-based trio who made some waves with their 2017 album I Go Missing In My Sleep. Ruiner is the follow up and sees the band toughening up their sound somewhat and escaping out of the shadows of their debut. Their music is a lovely romantic emo-twinged thing that brings to mind Big Thief and Death Cab For Cutie.

The Hanging Stars
A New Kind Of Sky

A New Kind Of Sky is the new album from The Hanging Stars. The London-based band, play a mix of psych, folk and country with harmonies and 12-string guitars weaving through the whole thing. You may have picked all that up from a glance at the album cover, though, which wouldn’t look out of place in the racks with classics by The Band and The Byrds. Their sound is also authentically of that magical late ‘60s early ‘70s era.

Califone
Echo Mine

Something a little different from Chicago experimentalists Califone here. Echo Mine is the score to a dance choreographed by fellow Chicagoan and dancer Robyn Mineko Williams. Whilst the project may have been different, the way they went about it was like they used to make music in their early days with Tim Rutilli filling in the spaces Ben Massarella and Brian Deck left with their drums, percussion and electronics.

United Bible Studies
Cave Hill Ascension

Cave Hill is a hill that overlooks Belfast in Northern Ireland. Climbing it, and the view, is quite a thing to experience. So much so that United Bible Studies, a trio made up from Alison O’Donnell  and Dominic Cooper of The Owl Service and electronic musician David Colohan, have made an album about it. Cave Hill Ascension combines two long-form devotional instrumentals with two folk songs.

Various
Avocet Revisited

Designed as almost a tribute but in the form of an accompanying piece for scottish folk musician Bert Jansch’s Avocet released in 1979, Earth Recordings commissioned four artists to pick a species of bird and write a track around it. Four tracks of peaceful and gently evocative music from Edwyn Collins & Carwyn Ellis, Modern Studies, Alasdair Roberts, and Trembling Bells.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Bryce Dessner, Eighth Blackbird
When We Are Inhuman

After last year’s El Chan, The National’s Bryce Dessner makes another foray into the world of contemporary classical and post-minimalist composition in the form of When We Are Inhuman. For When We Are Inhuman Dessner balanced the instrumental prowess of Eighth Blackbird with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s folksy songcraft to create an LP of nuanced and stirring compositions. Illinois-era Sufjan Stevens is the most obvious comparison here - indeed, the link is so strong that there’s even a song on When We Are Inhuman based on that record’s ‘John Wayne Gacy Jr.’.

Jim Sullivan
If The Evening Were Dawn

Light In The Attic continue their run of Jim Sullivan releases with If The Evening Were Dawn, a previously-unreleased set of tracks taped way back in 1969. Sullivan disappeared in 1975 and has not been found since, so his music will have to do the talking for him. And what music If The Evening Were Dawn is - Sullivan’s story gives these wistful countryfied folk songs even greater power than they would have on their own terms.

Robbie Basho
Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho

American folk guitarist and pianist Robbie Basho was a contemporary of guitarists John Fahey and Leo Kottke. The three of them all wanted to elevate the status of the acoustic guitar to grandness of a concert instrument. Unlike a nylon strung guitar Basho said it could bring about metaphorical fire. He was inspired by music and philosophy from different cultures around the world and particularly the music of Ravi Shankar. Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho is a feature-length documentary about is life. Available on Blu Ray and DVD

RIYL Scott Walker, Aldous Harding, Nico, Cat Power, PJ Harvey and stuff like that, really.

Johnny Cash
American II: Unchained

1994's 'American Recordings' provided something of a late career resurgence for the outlaw bard Johnny Cash. All in all there would be 6 such album, 'Unchained' being the second. It was recorded with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and as with much of the American series, featured a host of masterful covers. This time Cash tackled Jude Johnstone, Beck and Soundgarden.
