Giant Sand
Glum (25th Anniversary Edition)

Glum was the 11th album by Giant Sand and was originally released in 1994, hence this 25th anniversary reissue. The band, helmed as ever by Howe Gelb, also featured Joey Burns and John Convertino who went on to form Calexico, singer / songwriter Victoria Williams, Pete Holsapple of the dB’s, Chris Cacavas, Pappy Allen and singer / songwriter Lisa Germano. Their dusty Americana was, on this occasion, described by comedian Stewart Lee as ‘infant free jazz’.

Neil Young
After The Gold Rush

Neil’s 1970 masterpiece is sublimely balanced. The lonesome piano stoner anthem of the title track, the eerie / uplifting Don’t Let It Bring you Down, Only Love Can Break Your Heart’s hippy wisdom, a pair of Crazy Horse rockers, and a few weepies. There’s not a song here that wouldn’t be an essential setlist inclusion for most artists, but this is Neil we’re talking about. Hence the charming miniatures Cripple Creek Ferry and Til the Morning Comes are relatively overlooked and Tell Me Why rarely gets a live airing. The recent remaster was a revelation and best of all on vinyl.

Budgee
Swing the Barkley

Budgee is a duo featuring Celine Brooks, a Canadian who currently resides in Glasgow and Gareth Dickson who, as well as being an artist in his own right, has played with Vashti Bunyan. The influences on display here range from Robbie Basho to Fleetwood Mac via Talking Heads. This makes their debut full-length 'Swing The Barkley' an album of folk, pop and Americana with minimal production well worth your time.

red steppes
A Mouth May Grow

red steppes (no capitals) is a musical project led by musician and photographer Nika Aila States. A Mouth May Grow is their first album. The album was recorded to tape, allowing the limitations of this process shape how the music came together. It was recorded in California and took inspiration from various places along the coast.Thematically, love, gender and the effects of industry take centre stage.

Gaby Moreno & Van Dyke Parks
¡Spangled!

Guatemalan songwriter and musician Gaby Moreno has collaborated with renowned arranger, musician and producer Van Dyke Parks, known for his work with The Beach Boys as well as his own albums such as Song Cycle, to create ¡Spangled! The album includes a variety of styles including bolero, bossa nova and a bit of south western American music. Ry Cooder and Jackson Browne make guest appearances.

Kacy & Clayton
Carrying On

Taking cues from fifty years’ worth of American and British folk and country rock, Canadian second cousins Kacy and Clayton present their third studio album. David Woodcock
Normal Life

Even Men With Steel Hearts Love To See A Dog On The Sleeve. Look at that little beauty. My perfect dog almost. Lucky old David Woodcock a singer-songwriter straight out of Southend with a particularly English strand of songwriting that has seen him compared with Ray Davies, Blur and Ian Dury. This is his second album for Blow Up, his previous self-titled effort gained strong support from the likes of Steve Lamacq and Marc Riley.

Richard Hawley
Lowedges

Richard Hawley's soft but always commanding voice is the centrepiece of 'Lowedges', a record of gentle, carefully crafted chamber pop that brings together Wilco-esque drumming, country twang and an almost ambient approach to making rock 'n' roll. With his brooding and crooning, along with all the musicians ornamenting him, Hawley recalls artists such as Bill Fay.

Isobel Campbell
There Is No Other...

Isobel Campbell started out in Belle & Sebastian before recording under the name The Gentle Waves. She has also released three critically acclaimed albums with Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees. Her new solo album, There Is No Other… has been a while in coming, but Campbell says she likes to take her time and do things properly. The speed that the world is moving makes her want to take more time over the things she loves.

Bonniesong
Energetic Mind

Bonniesongs is the recording moniker of Bonnie Stewart. Those lucky enough to have caught one of her shows in her native Australia over the last couple of years have been treated to her exquisite brand of ethereal, arty, indie-tinged folk. Energetic Mind is her debut album, following on from her 2018 EP, Strings. For fans of Joanna Newsom, Cat Power and Bjork.

Bob Dylan
Nashville Skyline

Colombia are reissuing Legacy Editions of a whole brace of classic Bob Dylan albums, not that they seemed at risk of falling out of print. 1969’s Nashville Skyline finds Dylan going all the way into country music: must be in that Nashville air. Also marks the first appearance of croony singing voice.

Joan Shelley
Like The River Loves The Sea

Like The River Loves The Sea is the 5th (ish) album from Joan Shelley. Her plaintive folk stylings have been critically acclaimed far and wide. Whilst she may not be reinventing the wheel, she has a way of making the old refreshingly new. The songs were written in Kentucky and recorded in Iceland. Bonnie Prince Billy guests.

Red House Painters
Red House Painters / Rollercoaster

The high watermark of Mark Kozelek's career was both reminiscent of his earlier, more dour slowcore and indicative of the sombre guitar sage he'd become on early Sun Kil Moon records (before he became The Worst). Rollercoaster is a classic, a singer-songwriter record that languishes with the form in favour of sprawling, introspective tunes -- plus the odd bout of shoegaze bloodletting.

Sorrow
Under The Yew Possessed

Night School have snapped up the re-release rights to Sorrow’s 1993 LP Under The Yew Possessed. A neo-folk outfit centred around husband and wife duo Rose McDowall and Robert Lee, the band serve up some nice ethereal jangles here atop which McDowall coos in a tranquil manner. It’s like a more cerebral version of what PJ Harvey was doing at the time.

Father John Misty
Live at Third Man Records

Shy and retiring songwriter Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) made a rare public appearance in September 2017 and it just happened to be at Third Man studios on Nashville. Much to his embarrassment presumably, the whole thing was taped and has now been released on an LP. The songs cover all three Father John Misty releases and sees him strip things back a bit compared to the lavish studio arrangements.

Smoke Fairies
Darkness Brings The Wonders Home

Smoke Fairies are back with Darkness Brings The Wonders Home - their first album in five years. The starting point was the woodsy folk of their debut Through Low Light And Trees. They found their performances had a new boldness, however. This coupled with some exciting visits to a guitar shop near producer Phil Ek’s studio meant more guitars and new sounds were added to that sound.

Anna Calvi
Strange Weather

Produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Antony & The Johnsons, Sam Amidon) and recorded in New York, this mini album features covers of tracks by Suicide, David Bowie, FKA twigs and Connan Mockasin, as well as a stunning collaboration with David Byrne on the title track, a cover of Keren Ann’s ‘Strange Weather’. The cover of Suicide’s Ghost Rider was recorded with drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley) and Nico Muhly contributes string arrangements to the opener, a deconstructed organic reworking of FKA twigs’ ‘Papi Pacify’.
  • Genre(s):

Josienne Clarke
In All Weather

Josienne Clarke, best known for being one half of an eponymous folk duo with Ben Walker, goes it alone on debut solo LP, In All Weather. Sturgill Simpson
Sound & Fury

Though Sturgill Simpson comes from a country background, his records have become increasingly ambitious with 2016's A Sailors Guide To Earth featuring a Nirvana cover as well as a more vintage soulful soul that earned him a Grammy. Next up for the singer-songwriter is Sound & Fury, an album that accompanies a Japanese anime film based on a story from Simpson himself. The album is a soundtrack to the film and watch simultaneously and you'll see that each song represents a section of the film. Here is the audio version on CD or vinyl.

Buck Meek
Buck Meek

Big Thief’s co-founder and lead guitarist Buck Meek quietly released a solo album in the early summer of 2018. Now, the self-titled effort receives a re-issue as a result of the Brooklyn quartet’s success this year, and shares the same kind of emotional tension and openness to Big Thief’s music.

Ryley Walker
Primrose Green

Harking back to an era of technically proficient folk guitar, Ryley Walker brings a high level of craftsmanship to his work. Hailing from the Chicago scene that brought an exquisitely understated fusion of jazz and prog (Tortoise et al), Primrose Green brings a pastoral flavour to an area of rich musical heritage. Out on CD and vinyl LP from Dead Oceans.

Emel Mathlouthi
Everywhere We Looked Was Burning

Partisan Records displays its impressively diverse artist roster with the latest album by Tunisian-born New Yorker Emel Mathlouthi. Singing largely in English for the first time, Everywhere We Looked Was Burning is politically and ecologically charged, but is no less tuneful than her previous works.

Leonard Cohen
Thanks For The Dance

Wilco
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was the Wilco album that Warners refused to release so the band put it up for free on their website and it was eventually picked up by Warners subsidiary Nonesuch. The mad world of corporate record labels notwithstanding it has long been seen as perhaps their greatest achievement to date taking their Americana-like sound and running with it to new and adventurous sonic areas no doubt assisted by producer Jim O'Rourke.

Joni Mitchell
Blue

Blue by Joni Mitchell is a masterpiece. Originally released in 1971, the album was inspired by travel, it was partly written on her travels around Europe, and her ailing relationship with Graham Nash. Joni ended the relationship whilst writing the album which added a melancholic tone, making it a truly heartfelt collection of songs. An absolute must have for any collection. LP on Reprise.

Bill Callahan
Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest

Guess what? Bill Callahan got married....and fathered a child. Lovely news but what it has meant is that Bill's music has taken a back seat in recent years to the rigours and glories of family life. He's more that made up for it though with this 20 track album of new material. Don't panic though, not an endless double album these are short, sharp compositions exemplifying his songwriting talents.

Giant Sand
Recounting The Ballads Of Thin Line Men

It seems alt. Country trailblazers, Giant Sand, returning to their early albums and re-recording them with the addition of some new ideas is becoming a thing. In 2018 they released Returns To The Valley of Rain, which saw them having another stab at their debut album Valley of Rain. Now they are doing the same with Recounting The Ballads of Thin Line Men - a new version of their 1986 sophomore effort, The Ballad of a Thin Line Man.

Iron and Wine
Live at Third Man Records

The latest in a seemingly unending, but very welcome, series Live At Third Man, sees Sam Beam bring Iron & Wine to the Blue Room in Nashville. Beam kept his backing band as minimal as possible to make this a genuinely affecting and moving performance. Songs from albums Our Endless Numbered Days, Ghost on Ghost and his rarities compilation, Around The Well are featured.

Simon Joyner
Pocket Moon

A singer-songwriter veteran with a long-established cult profile, Simon Joyner chose to throw a lot in the air for his latest album 'Pocket Moon', asking friend and collaborator Michael Krassner to source unknown musicians for him rather than relying on familiar players. The results are different yet completely familiar to Joyner’s fans, full of his cliche-free observations on the joys and cruelties of life.

Jessica Pratt
On Your Own Love Again

On Your Own Love Again is Jessica Pratt’s second album following her 2012 debut. It offers dreamy, subtle, folk melodies punctuated by Pratt’s beautiful, childlike voice which almost has a Bob Dylan lilt to it. It beautifully chimes along with American folk from the 1960s. A charming record to get lost with on a Sunday morning.

Molina & Johnson

Recorded deep into Jason Molina's second incarnation of his band, the Magnolia Electric Co., Molina & Johnson sees the songwriter bat alt-country heads with contemporary country artist Will Johnson. The record sees both of them sacrifice the lighter, more earnestly pastoral sides of their craft for a dark, testing record of unkind and unloved folk music.

Ideal Man

Andrew Combs’ latest album Ideal Man sees him make a slight change in tack. Boat To Row
Rivers That Flow in Circles

'Rivers That Flow in Circles', the new record from Boat To Row, is a record born of turmoil. When Pledge Music went into administration, as was the case with other artists, Boat To Row lost thousands of pounds that were to be directed towards the costs incurred over the course of making records. Thankfully, the fine people at Static Caravan stepped in to fund the release of this, their second album.

Smog
Knock Knock

Knock Knock. Who is there? Bill. Bill who? Bill from Knaresborough....the Smog guy. Ah. That terrible sleeve adorns a work of rich majesty that now enjoys a 20th anniversary re-issue. Smog's previous album Red Apple Falls showcased the singer using ever more adventurous recording techniques and actual singing to showcase his rich brown autumnal songs. Knock Knock is a beaut. He's the Leonard Cohen of the '90s and a ladies man to match.

Molly Sarlé
Karaoke Angel

Molly Sarlé is one third of Mountain Man, the Appalachian folk trio who have a couple of albums in their own name, but also toured as backing singers for Feist on her 'Metals' tour. The incentive to make 'Karaoke Angel' came from a time when she was on a trip following a relationship break-up. She sang the Fleetwood Mac song, 'Dreams', on karaoke and the experience was rather profound for her.

Neal Francis
Changes

Stunning contemporary funk and soul from this recently sober Chicago musician. The first record he was given as a child was a Dr John LP so it's easy to see what his influences are. It's no surprise then that Changes has elements of New Orleans blues, gospel ish soul and 70's lowdown rock and roll within its grooves. Add this in to a storied history of alcohol and drug addiction and long recovery Neal Francis obviously has a point to prove and has created a passionate, soulful album steeped in the past but looking forward to what might be ahead.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
I Made A Place

Ooh it's been a long while since a fully original Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album. The last one was in the middle of the Obama presidency in fact - and to think people had the wherewithal to moan about that tenancy. Now, just as the world is ending we get a proper new BPB album because he realises that there is never a right time for a new album from one of the more loved artists of his generation. Let's just celebrate him whilst he is alive and healthy.

The Mekons
Fear And Whiskey

Fear and Whiskey was the fourth album by The Mekons. This album saw the British/American punk band take a sharp stylistic turn by morphing into a country rock band. It is thought that this could have been where the alt. country/american genre began. It is widely regarded as their best album. An album of its time, which is also timeless.

Guitar aces are always photographed with their guitar cases aren't they? Check the sleeve of this latest record by immersive psychedelic player and vocalist Steve Gunn. Touching his guitar case as if headin' off to the next two bit town that will appreciate his playin'. But Gunn is a lot more than just a folky guitar guy, and here he produces what is promised to be his most complex and emotional album yet, turning his thoughts inward to reflect on his own internal thought patterns.

James McKenzie & The McKenzie Brothers
James McKenzie & The McKenzie Brothers

The moustache on the sleeve could probably tell you that what we have here is some smooth yacht rock from 40 years ago re-unleashed onto the world by Athens of the North. With comparisons to David Crosby, Steely Dan and Jimmy Webb being bandied around it sounds like we're in for some smooth sailing with this compilation of the two albums this McKenzie clan made in their lifetime. Keep the fire burning.

The Delines feature ex members of Richmond Fontaine, most notably Willy Vlautin, along with vocalist Amy Boone of The Damnations and Cory Gray of Eels. Eight Floors Up is the first thing the band have recorded since the critical and commercial success of their 2nd LP The Imperial. The two songs featured here, penned by Vlautin, were written in reaction to an accident in which Boone was hit by a car and spent significant time in the hospital.

Charlie Parr
Charlie Parr

First seen by this very writer playing to tourists in a Duluth diner, Charlie Parr has come a long way since those modest beginnings and is now rightfully regarded as one of the best modern proponents of the sort of folk blues that can be found on Harry Smith's 'Anthology of American Folk Music'. His new album (as the eponymous title perhaps suggests) is a fresh start for Parr after an accident rendered him unable to play. It's a mixture of new songs and re-works of older tracks as Parr partially looks back on his career so far.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Colorado

Colorado is the first album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse since the epic Psychedelic Pill in 2012. The band believe that they had it in them to make an album that was equal to their best material, so they got together and gave it a go. This particular incarnation of Crazy Horse include Nils Lofgren on guitar and piano.

Gene Clark
No Other

Originally released in 1974 to critical praise but little commercial impact, The Byrds’ founder Gene Clark poured his heart and soul - and quite a lot of his own money - into No Other, a massively ambitious and strikingly beautiful record spanning psychedelia, country, folk and soul. For its 45th anniversary, 4AD are re-issuing the re-mastered album on CD and LP, and also in a lavish box-set containing a myriad of alternate mixes and bonus tracks, a documentary film and extensive liner notes and essays.

Lee Hazlewood
400 Miles From L.A. 1955-56

Light In The Attic strike gold once more with 400 Miles From L.A. 1955-56. The latest record in the label’s set of Lee Hazlewood reissues might be their most impressive. Recently unearthed from the archives of Viv Records - the D.I.Y. label that Hazlewood ran before D.I.Y. labels were a thing - these early sketches, taped at home by Hazlewood, show the artist honing his practice in real-time. 400 Miles From L.A. 1955-56 contains many unreleased tracks as well as demo versions of some songs that would make it onto his debut LP Trouble Is A Lonesome Town.

Such a breath of fresh air when he burst onto the scene in the early Noughties, freak-folk legend Devendra Banhart is now on his tenth studio album and shows no signs of stopping. Ma is sung in Spanish and Portuguese, and features backing vocals from Cate Le Bon and a closing duet with the iconic Vashti Bunyan.

Alasdair Roberts
The Fiery Margin

The Fiery Margin is the 13th solo album by Scottish folkie, Alasdair Roberts. Roberts has been known to mix traditional songs with originals. Here, on this collection of original material, he takes his inspiration from songs, performance and thoughts from the last 2000 years or so. It’s fair to say it’s a well researched record.

Red House Painters
Red House Painters / Bridge

Of the two sorta untitled Red House Painters records, Bridge is the perennial underachiever, a record that's more subtle in places and less focused in tone. It makes for something of RHP rock record: a strangely joyous cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "I Am A Rock" appears, as does a gloomy, pantomimic cover of the Star Spangled Banner. There's also some of Kozelek's own songs, which were pretty good back in the day.

Beirut
The Rip Tide

Previous to The Rip Tide, Zach Condon (aka Beirut) had been sort of a musical magpie taking bits of various forms of world music and making himself sound like a million piece vodka-stricken Russian orchestra. The Rip Tide was the moment he stripped everything back and revealed what was possibly the real Zach Condon beneath the orchestrated folk bluster. The result was a more personal, reflective album that showcased his songwriting talents and revealed more homespun lyrical themes concerning love and friendship.

Boy Scouts
Free Company

Boy Scouts is the name under which Bay Area singer-songwriter, Taylor Vick, makes her music. Her second album, Free Company, was produced by fellow singer-songwriter, Stephen Steinbrink. After a decade or so of experimenting and honing her craft, it seems that she has found the right producer, the right balance of instruments which allow her voice to be the star.

North Mississippi Allstars
Up and Rolling

North Mississippi Allstars are again Up and Rolling with their latest Southern blues rock full-length, one interwoven with the cultural fabric of the outfit's home state. The record reflects on the band's 1990's beginnings, which sees the Mississippi mainstays neatly come full circle as they clock up 10 album releases.

Ghosts Of The Great Highway

Out of print for far too long, Ghosts of the Great Highway is a timely reminder of the power and emotion Mark Kozelek's music once had. This was his first 'group' record post Red House Painters and is seen as one of his best. With a band featuring Anthony Koutsos (Red House Painters), Tim Mooney (American Music Club), the album fine tunes Kozelek's previous poetic sadcore with a healthy dose of Americana. Vinyl reissue contains original bonus track 'Gentle Moon'.

Bill Ryder-Jones
Yawny Yawn

Bill Ryder-Jones’ 2018 LP Yawn was a fine set of epic ballads in that sort of Richard Hawley/Bill Callahan/Elbow tradition. On Yawny Yawn we find the former member of The Coral stripping back the tunes of Yawn to the bare essentials - just piano, voice and a few wisps of ambient electronics. This tender treatment allows the stark beauty of Ryder-Jones’ music to come into even sharper focus.

Beirut
Gulag Orkestar

Teenage Albuquerque kid Zach Condon came marching out of nowhere with this debut as Beirut which sounds less like a precocious teen and more like a million piece Balkan orchestra. He was aided and abetted by Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw) who played a variety of instruments which made Condon's songs sound something like Stephin Merritt backed by a drunken raggle-taggle folk collective.

Cat Power
Moon Pix

Cat Power’s fourth LP Moon Pix, which was released originally in 1998. It was the product of a hallucinatory nightmare, but listening to is far more pleasant than such an experience. A contemplative, nuanced achievement from the singer/songwriter.

Dana Gavanski
Catch

Full Time Hobby presents their second 7” vinyl single from acclaimed Canadian songwriter Dana Gavanski, produced by Tunng’s Mike Lindsay. ‘Catch’, backed by another new track ‘Off Again’, follows the warm reception that ‘One By One’ earned back on release in April and her Spring Demos EP from a couple of years ago.

Josh Rouse
Dressed Up Like Nebraska

His later work may have gone all synthy and sophisticated and he may have now taken to wearing sunglasses on his album sleeves but go back to 1998 and Josh Rouse was just a folky songwriter out of Nebraska with a clutch of mournful songs in tow. 'Dressed Up Like Nebraska' is his debut recorded on an 8 track in his living room and catches the nascent songwriter at his evocative best.

Sandro Perri
Soft Landing

Sandro Perri albums are like London buses - you wait ages for one, then two come along next to each other. We waited seven long years for last year’s In Another Life, and barely 12 months later, Soft Landing has arrived. Opening with the gargantuan 16-minute ‘Time (You Got Me)’, it sees Perri explore the guitar, his primary instrument, in greater detail than usual.

Kele Goodwin
Moonbug

Portland singer-songwriter Kele Goodwin sees his 2017 LP Moonbug given a vinyl pressing through the lovely little German label oscarson (Kepler, Brigid Mae Power). Moonbug is more widescreen than Goodwin’s intimate 2010 debut Hymns, with an astute backing band fleshing out his world-weary brand of Americana. Goodwin’s reed-clear voice and penchant for folksy chord changes pitches Moonbug somewhere between Love Is Overtaking Me-mode Arthur Russell, John Martyn and Wilco - a very good place to be indeed.

Joanna Newsom
Milk Eyed Mender

This was the time we first heard Joanna Newsom. It was one of those moments where you hear something so original you aren't sure whether to cover your ears or bounce around the room proclaiming a new genius in town. Her's were wandering songs of a distinctly folky tone but played on the most exquisite harp playing of all time. Then she sang, a sort of high-pitched child-like squeak that wandered over the songs like a dog's squeaky toy in search of a resting place. Lovely though.

Joanna Newsom
Ys

Remember the hype on this? Everyone and their dog proclaiming it to be Album of All Time before it was even released. What do you all think now? Probably that it's ok, that it goes on a bit or that Van Dyke Parks arrangements are as beautiful as they were on first listen. Or maybe you love it like your only child. It's certainly an ambitious work, harps topped off with a squeaky door on tunes that wander thither, hither. If nothing else it still is a unique piece of music.

Vashti Bunyan
Just Another Diamond Day

Just Another Diamond Day by Vashti Bunyan, released in 1970, is notable for being a gentle folk classic, but also for being her only album until 2005’s Lookaftering. The album tells the tell of the time she left civilisation to join Donovan’s community of creative hippy types in the Hebrides. It was produced by Joe Boyd and features the musical talents of Robin Williamson of The Incredible String Band, and Simon Nicol and Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention. 180g reissue LP in replica gatefold sleeve, limited to 1000 copies.

Pet Deaths
to the top of the hill and roll...

One for fans of lowercase lettering and inappropriate band names here, it's the London-based self-proclaimed 'celestial folk duo' Pet Deaths. Their debut record 'top of the hill and roll...' is coming off the back of a string of wonderful singles that combine feather-light harmonies, Wicker Man vibes, and a faint air of menace... Out on Silver Mind Records.

Justin Hopper & Sharron Kraus with The Belbury Poly
Chanctonbury Rings

Chanctonbury Rings is the result of a musical and spoken-word project from electro/acoustic folk musician Sharron Kraus and writer Justin Hopper, recorded in conjunction with The Belbury Poly. The timeless soundscapes and curiously unplaceable tone of the poetry evokes a long-lost vein of British art.

Jane Weaver
The Silver Globe

‘The Silver Globe’ is the sixth solo album from Liverpudlian singer/songwriter and guitarist Jane Weaver. A concept album inspired by past experiences, cosmic imagery and idiosyncratic stories, 'The Silver Glove' combines  influences of mechanical rock with retrofitted European cinema and empyrean vocals, alongside futuristic vintage synths to create something multifaceted, beguiling and truly singular.

Leonard Cohen
Greatest Hits

Released in 1975 Leonard Cohen's Greatest Hits was the bedsitter record of the era for anyone wanting to clamp their ears to the pillow and pretend that glam-rock had never happened. It collects the best bits of his 60s and 70s work onto what would become an iconic collection of lowly whispered folk and hotel room introspection. Containing some of his most famous songs, this Greatest Hits is truly an album that stands on its own accord as an LP and introduced discerning listeners to the man we came to know as 'laughing Len'.

Live at Third Man Records

The latest record in Third Man Records’ Live At Third Man Records series finds the label/shop/Jack White vanity project hosting famed alt-country sadster Bill Callahan. The autumnal poetry of The Artist Formerly Known As Smog is magnified in his spare live show. These recordings expertly capture concert Callahan.

Rodriguez
Cold Fact

We all know the story by now. American singer-songwriter Rodriguez releases his debut LP in 1970 to little fanfare and modest sales. Meanwhile somehow the record gets picked up by music lovers in South Africa and the record goes platinum. The story is covered in life affirming detail in the Searching for the Sugarman film but if you don't have it already, you'll need this re-issue of his classic first album - full of warm sunshine vibes like a Bob Dylan on prozac.

Rodriguez
Coming From Reality

The story of American singer-songwriter Rodriguez has been much covered over the years particularly in the Searching for the Sugarman film. His debut Cold Fact is a stone cold (fact) classic but less is known about his second (and final album to date) Coming From Reality. It again pitches Rodriquez with Dennis Coffey and features further stream of consciousness type songs that reference Bob Dylan but has a sound all of its own.

Dusty Springfield
Dusty In Memphis

A few years ago (I say ‘a few’ I probably mean 20) I read an opinion, I think in the NME, that the 10-second intro to Son Of A Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield is the greatest 10 seconds of music ever recorded. It’s hard to argue with as it is very good indeed. Dusty Springfield released Dusty In Memphis in 1969 and utilised the talents of the city’s finest session musicians. It was produced by Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd and is thought of as her best work, and is arguably one of the best albums of all time.

Bon Iver
Bon Iver

It's probably safe to say that you won't be seeing Justin Vernon playing his debut For Emma, Forever Ago in its entirety in concert anytime soon as the Wisconsin based artist tends to move on drastically from every release. Indeed this self titled follow up to his now legendary debut changed his musical map completely. This time lots of musicians (including saxophone ace Colin Stetson) were brought in to flesh out his sound resulting in a completely different imprint which is either a bold step forward or a cluttered mess depending on how attached you were to his first record.

Kathryn Williams Anthology

To coincide with the 20th anniversary of her 1999 debut album Dog Leap Stairs, this 20xCD box set covers the entirety of Kathryn Williams’ sorely under-rated output. It covers 10 studio albums, including her Mercury breakthrough Little Black Numbers, plus various side-projects she’s been involved with over the years.

Jesse Malin
Sunset Kids

The eighth studio album from American singer-songwriter Jesse Malin, whom the long of memory will recall was once heralded as a Next Big Thing in rock music in about 2002. That fame and fortune never materialised, but the quality of his output has always been high, something attested to by 'Sunset Kids', which features guest spots from Lucinda Williams and Billie Joe Armstrong.

Whitney
Forever Turned Around

Whitney return with their new album, Forever Turned Around. It is the follow-up to their 2016 debut Light Upon The Lake. The Chicago duo play a brand of indie-fied soulful country. Forever Turned Around was produced by Bradley Cook and Jonathan Rado, who, with credits between them such as Hand Habits, Father John Misty, Weyes Blood and Hiss Golden Messenger, were able to add the perfect colours and textures.

Tunng
Songs You Make At Night

Rather like The Great Conjunction in The Dark Crystal, Tunng’s shifting personnel have aligned once again, for the first time in many years, just as they were at the outset.. I remember them back in 2007 as shaggy-haired, semi-electronic Brit-folksters, but something’s definitely happened in the intervening years. This one sounds more like catchy psychedelic electro-pop and dance. Fab.

Rose Dorn
Days You Were Leaving

Rose Dorn are a three-piece from LA who were raised on a diet of Elliott Smith. More recently labels such as Double Double Whammy and Orchid Tapes have been providing them with sounds to treasure. Those who enjoy the obscure end of ‘90s US melodic indie should check these guys out. Days You Were Leaving is their debut album.

Shannon Lay
August

August, the third album by Shannon lay, sees her take on folk music drift from lo-fi Vashti Bunyan-style quietness to an Dry-era PJ Harvey rawness. It was recorded with her pal Ty Segall and features his pal, Mikal Cronin (presumably her pal too!) playing sax on the opening track. It includes a cover of Karen Dalton’s Something On Your Mind.

Robert Wyatt
Shleep

There are many musicians who I wish would retire but one of them isn't Robert Wyatt.  Therefore it's a real shame that he is to make no more music. Instead let's be grateful that there is a large back catalogue to trawl through. 'Shleep' is his 1997 album which at that point was his first in six years. As always it's a glorious and eccentric work. He's one of the few people who can have Paul Weller guesting and yet it still doesn't put you off.
  • Genre(s):

Will Johnson
Wire Mountain

Will Johnson was once known as Centro-Matic but is now on his sixth album under his own name. He's kind of like a Southern fried Robert Pollard both in delivery and reliability but Johnson is happy to move out of his comfort zone, Wire Mountain adds in a wealth of new textures to his lo-fi rocking sound and features a guest appearance from Thor Harris (Swans and Thor & Friends).

Comus
First Utterance

First Utterance is the debut album by acid folk/prog folk band Comus. It was originally released in 1971. They’re named after a work by John Milton and a Greek god. It’s fair to say they sound different to most other bands, but their influence has spread far and wide with David Bowie, Opeth and Current 93 all claiming to be fans. Current 93 covered their first single, Diana, which is featured here.

Robbie Basho
Visions of the Country

In 1978 Robbie Basho released the legendary Visions of the Country. Coming relatively late in a career which saw him, alongside John Fahey, develop the 'American Primitive' guitar tradition, Visions of the Country is a remarkable album filled with spirit, emotion, and ruggedness. The guitar playing is raw and intense, and his singing is just breathtaking. A marvel.
