Trappist Afterland
Seaside Ghost Tales

Trappist Afterland are an Australian acid-folk outfit led by Adam Geoffrey Cole. 'Seaside Ghosts' is the band’s final album from their ten-year career. The LP centres on grief brought on by the death of Cole’s father, and also growing up in an Australian seaside town. These songs are delivered with a droning, anxious unease in a similar vein to previous albums ‘Afterlander’ (2015) and ‘Se(VII)en’ (2018). RIYL Comus, The Incredible String Band and Espers.

Karen Dalton
1966

An archival gem from Karen Dalton here. The Greenwich Village affiliate was known to be more comfortable singing songs around a kitchen table than laying them down in a studio. What makes 1966 so special is that it captures Dalton in her element. The tracks here were taped one evening during a rehearsal at Dalton’s cabin in Colorado. Tackling originals and covers alongside her husband Richard Tucker, 1966 is made all the more powerful for the intimacy of its recording.

Heather Trost
Petrichor

‘Petrichor’ is the third LP from Heather Trost. Trost makes psychedelic pop and seems to have found the perfect balance between accessibility and experimentalism here. ‘Petrichor was Petrichorded over a twelve-month period at her home-studio with husband Jeremy Barnes, who also happens to be the drummer and keyboardist from Neutral Milk Hotel. On Third Man.

Neil Young
After The Gold Rush (50th Anniversary Edition)

‘After The Gold Rush’ was the third album by Neil Young and was originally released in 1970. This edition of the much-loved classic celebrates the LP's fiftieth anniversary. Young dabbles in a number of styles, from the folky opener ‘Tell Me Why’, the sensitive ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’ and the smouldering rocker ‘Southern Man’. This edition also includes two versions of album outtake ‘Wonderin'’, included as a bonus 7” with the LP and as extra tracks on the CD.

Here we have it available as an expanded five-LP set or four-CD set, and both formats include demos, outtakes and rarities - a veritable feast for Wilcians (Little Wilcers? The Wilc Hive?) everywhere! Red House Painters
Red House Painters / Bridge

Of the two sorta untitled Red House Painters records, Bridge is the perennial underachiever, a record that's more subtle in places and less focused in tone. It makes for something of RHP rock record: a strangely joyous cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "I Am A Rock" appears, as does a gloomy, pantomimic cover of the Star Spangled Banner. There's also some of Kozelek's own songs, which were pretty good back in the day.

Michael Chapman
Americana

For someone born in Hunslet Michael Chapman certainly has a solid knowledge of the music of the deep South of the United States. The esteemed guitarist made two albums of superbly crafted fingerpicking folk and alt country in the early 2000s and here picks his favourite tracks for a single album vinyl release. Chapman has written music in many styles but it could be argued that this is his most affecting.

Arbouretum
Let It All In

Let It All In is the tenth album by Baltimore-based folk rock four-piece Arbouretum. The band take their cues from English folk, country, blues, Americana and '70s psychedelia and, in Dave Heumann, have a songwriter with an ear, and voice, for a heartbreaking melody and engaging lyrics. On Thrill Jockey.

Paul Simon
Graceland

Paul Simon's career was a bit in the doldrums before he collaborated with/stole ideas off (delete where appropriate) African musicians on what would be come his biggest selling record. The album is a marvellous blend of styles and re-invigorated the pint-sized songwriter. Also highly influential to bands like Animal Collective and Vampire Weekend.

Hiss Golden Messenger

John Grant

Earth
Full Upon Her Burning Lips

Dylan Carlson looks older all of a sudden. Mind you, Earth have been putting out records for some 30 years and, to be honest, I’m probably remembering what he looked like from a picture in 1991. Anyway, this is the new album pre-grunge metal duo Earth and it’s called Full Upon Her Burning. LP and CD on Sargent House.

Nick Mulvey
Begin Again

Following its digital release back in July 2020, the latest EP from contemporary-classical outfit Portico Quartet’s Nick Mulvey gets a physical release on "eco-mix" vinyl. Completed during the Coronavirus lockdown but written beforehand, the three songs of interdependency and community on ‘Begin Again’ took on a profound new meaning in 2020.

Cobalt Chapel
Orange Synthetic

That album sleeve looks like every day out I've had in the beautiful countryside that surrounds us in Yorkshire. Cobalt Chapel have made an entire album called 'Orange Synthetic' about the place - about its history, folklore, nature and landscape. What a place! And the perfect subject matter for their style of music, one which includes all kinds of organ variants plus mandolin and recorders all topped off with Cecelia Fage's cut-glass vocal.

Nobody AKA Willis Earl Beal
Morningstar

A follow-up to Alms, his quiet and resplendent album from 2018, Morningstar is an eight-track EP from Chicago artist Willis Earl Beal, a compelling blend of lo-fi folk, ambient and hip-hop aesthetics. Appropriately for these dark and ominous times, Beal explains about the title “[it] appears in the winter, just before the dawn”.

Sufjan Stevens
The Ascension

The undisputed king of sensual, emotional indie-folk, Sufjan Stevens returns with a new studio album and his second full-length of 2020 following the experimental 'Aporia' that he made with his step-father Lowell Brams. Here Sufjan switches proceedings up hugely from the hauntingly sparse, unanimously loved ‘Carrie & Lowell’ by delivering eighty minutes of electronics-tinged art rock. Expect lush suites, moving melodic songwriting, sweeping build-ups and glitchy beats.

Skyway Man
The World Only Ends When You Die

I've always wondered this. Does the world end when you die? Or does it just carry on without you? I can't imagine, for example, what these descriptions would look like without my input - a lot more concise maybe. Aaaaanyway, this is the second album from James Wallace aka Skyway Man, who has made what he describes as a "cinematic psych folk opera" here. 'The World Only Ends When You Die' is about someone who has just had a near-death experience, and Wallace ties that in with the mess that is the U.S.A. right now. Nothing if not ambitious this one.

Hiski Salomaa
Longing for Freedom

The eighteen songs on ‘Longing For Freedom’ were recorded between the late 1920s and early 1930s for Columbia by Finnish-American songwriter Hiski Salomaa - indeed, this record represents his complete body of work. Associated with the labour movement, these songs of working life as an immigrant in pre-war America resonated with his intended audience.

Tom Waits
Nighthawks At The Diner

Waits’ third album is arguably the pinnacle of his early beatnik barfly persona. Taking a different approach to his more mannered previous albums, the 1975 LP was recorded live in a pseudo small club setup. It’s jazzy and deceptively loose and boozy, though Tom knows exactly what he’s doing, whether delivering jokey banter or vividly narrative songs like Spare Parts and Putnam County.

Jim Sullivan
U.F.O.

Jim Sullivan was a folkie who haunted the clubs of Malibu in the early '70s but when it came to making an album produced something much more ambitious in scope. It's a deep and yearning work that has something of the Fred Neil about it - a deep listen of cosmic Americana.  Not long after it was completed Sullivan disappeared never to be found so all we have left of him is his masterpiece thankfully re-issued by Light in the Attic.

Calexico
Seasonal Shift

Nearly quarter of a century into their career, Joey Burns and John Convertino present their first festive album as Calexico. Spanning intimate songs recorded by themselves to full-cast blowouts with collaborators like Bombino, Gaby Moreno and Gisela João, ‘Seasonal Shift’ grew from an EP to a full albums project. Contains originals and covers of songs from the likes of John Lennon and Tom Petty.

Serge Gainsbourg
Intoxicated Man

First of all, what an astonishing title for an album. Intoxicated Man features classic Serge Gainsbourg material from the period 1958 to 1962, when our man was in his simmering, swaggering pomp. Intoxicated Man maps out a very particular style of cool, which Serge absolutely excels at. Le Chant du Monde have collected together his 'Le Poinçonneur des Lilas', 'La Chanson de Prévert' and 'La Javanaise' LPs along with the 'Les Loups dans la bergerie' 7" EP.

Steve Earle & The Dukes
Ghosts of West Virginia

Ghosts of West Virginia is the eighteenth studio album by Steve Earl & The Dukes. It is an attempt to reach out to people who voted for Donald Trump and heal the rift. Steve says it’s easy to think badly of Trump voters but to think of them all as being racist and whatever else is misguided. The album has the Upper Big Branch coal mine explosion, one of the worst coal mining disasters in US history, as its central theme.

Peter Broderick
Blackberry

Recorded in London during the summer of 2019 but echoing sentiments of connection, happiness and family that are all so resonant in 2020, 'Blackberry' is a surprise release from singer-songwriter and sometime Efterklang member Peter Broderick. 'Blackberry' represents Broderick's first vocal solo album in five years, and it's an LP of folksy sophisti-pop which lands somewhere between Prefab Sprout and Bibio.

Ohtis
Curve of Earth

There's a hint of Throbbing Gristle's innocuous album cover to their dark 20 Jazz Funk Greats about the cover to Curve of Earth by Ohtis. Where Gristle's cheesy LP cover hid a whirl of crunching Industrial rock, the cutesy cover to Curve of Earth is brought into question with a look at the tracklisting; 'Pervert Blood', 'Rehab' and 'Junkie Heaven' among them. The music however, is a delightful blend of woozy and indeed cutesy folk in the vain of Mac Demarco, even if the lyrics might be a bit dark in places.

Seasick Steve
Travellin' Man / Ready Or Not

Seastick Steve is doing his bit to make us all feel better, whether it's just the visceral joy brought about by his stomping mix of boogie and blues or the fact that he’s spreading positivity through the title of his new album, Love & Peace. Travellin’ Man / Ready of Not is a double A sided single lifted from the LP.

Chicago-based singer-songwriter Jess Shoman has remarkably developed her bedroom project Tenci to the point of performing as a full band and releasing its debut solo album in little over a year. Angel Olsen
Whole New Mess

Whole New Mess is a fascinating deep dive into Angel Olsen’s artistry, particularly that of her acclaimed 2019 album All Mirrors. Recorded solo at her home in North Carolina, nine of the 11 songs here made it onto All Mirrors when re-shaped with a full backing band. Although they are skeletal frameworks underpinning what would become lavish epics, Whole New Mess is also a very human listening experience.

Daniel Knox
Won't You Take Me With You

Chicago songwriter Daniel Knox has used places - both in his hometown and beyond - for inspiration on 'Won't You Take Me With You', his fifth album. This is a story-driven album with something of a filmic quality. It's all led by Daniel's rich baritone, which floats amongst beds of synths on an LP which frequently references sections of his growing back catalogue. Not a million miles from Rufus Wainwright.

Joni Mitchell
Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol 1 The Early Years (1963-1967)

Joni Mitchell Archives – Vol 1 The Early Years (1963-1967) plots the development of Joni Mitchell as a singer and a songwriter, spread over 5 CDs. It includes early recordings, from folk standards such as House of the Rising Sun and John Hardy to her first self-penned songs such as Urge For Going and Day After Day.

Ben Harper
Winter Is For Lovers

'Winter For Lovers' is the fifteenth studio album by Ben Harper. It is an LP the US multi-instrumentalist has always wanted to make, and is a solo lap-steel album which takes in delta blues, flamenco music and minimalism. The album is hewn from a lifelong love of Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, Robert Johnson and John Fahey. On Hellcat.

William Elliott Whitmore
I'm With You

I’m With You is the eighth full-length album from William Elliott Whitmore. He is known for his stripped back, earthy country-folk sound, but here he strips down to just a banjo and a bass drum. The theme of the album is the unity of family and friends.Something he knows about - he still lives on the Iowa farm where he grew up.

Jim White
Misfit's Jubilee

Jim White usual approach is to write songs that ponder the darker side of life in the Southern States of the USA. On Misfit’s Jubilee, his 8th album, things seem a little more optimistic than usual -  as lead single Sum of What We’ve Been will attest. Don’t let that fool you though, his tales of misfits and outcasts are still lurking around the corner. On Loose.

Jeremy Ivey
Waiting Out The Storm

Waiting Out The Storm is the second album by Nashville-based singer / songwriter Jeremy Ivey. There’s some classic sounding songs here, rattling blues-tinged country and darker sounding alt. Country with Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen as clear influences.  Before recording his own songs Ivey wrote songs for his wife, fellow country singer Margo Price. Price has returned the favour by producing this album.

Dwight Yoakam
Population Me

2003's 'Population: Me' is the second of country/bluegrass pioneer Dwight Yoakam's early-2000s work to get the vinyl reissue treatment. It sees the artist explore a wider range of sounds than his earlier, rootsier records. 'Population: Me' contains three covers too, including a bluegrass rendition of Burt Bacharach's 'Trains and Boats and Planes'.

Dwight Yoakam
Dwight's Used Records

Perma-hatted country pioneer Dwight Yoakam is getting some of his mid-2000s records remastered for vinyl, one of which is 2004's 'Dwight's Used Records'. The title sort of explains this one, seeing as how 'Dwight's Used Records' contains tracks that Yoakam released on compilations or on other artists' albums. Remarkably, the set stands up as a coherent release, one that showcases the rootsy sound that is at the heart of all Yoakam does.

Howe Gelb & A Band Of Gypsies
Alegrias

Howe Gelb is, of course, the man from Giant Sand. He has also had a long and circuitous solo career. In 2010 Gelb made 'Alegrias', an album where he hooked up with Band of Gypsies in order to blend his sun-scorched desert-rock with flamenco beats. The result was one of his best albums, and now 'Alegrias' comes reissued with a poster, postcards and bonus tracks.

Frank Turner & Jon Snodgrass
Buddies II: Still Buddies

Frank Turner and Jon Snodgrass are good pals ... buddies, you might say. Ten years ago, they had a good time making a record together - cut to the present day, they've decided to do it again. However, this time around the COVID lockdown means they've had to do it over the internet wires. The same lighthearted style of camaraderie shines through on 'Buddies II: Still Buddies' - despite the distance involved, this is an album that's poignant, funny and heartfelt.

Keaton Henson
Monument

Singer / songwriter-turned-composer Keaton Henson has returned to his roots as a singer / songwriter with Monument. His gentle voice sings lyrics about grief and how to deal with it, whilst sparse electronic backing is fleshed out with a full band and, at one point, a full orchestra. Philip Selway of Radiohead, guitarist Leo Abrahams and composer and musician Charlotte Harding all lend a helping hand.

John Lennon
Gimme Some Truth.

Released across all formats and also in boxset editions, ‘Gimme Some Truth.’ marks what would have been the eightieth birthday of Sir John Of Lennon. Taken from his entire solo discography, including the posthumous LP ‘Milk And Honey’, the material here has been completely remastered from the original tapes and shows off the breadth and depth of Lennon’s timeless songwriting.

Richard Youngs & Daniel O'Sullivan
Twelve of Hearts

Released on Tim Burgess’s O Genesis imprint, experimental musicians Richard Youngs and Daniel O’Sullivan - both members of the label’s roster - team up for ‘Twelve of Hearts’. A rigidly consistent song cycle based strictly on four chords and constructed over the course of several months at opposite ends of Britain, the album shows the riches a minimalist palette can bring.

J.R. Bohannon / Ben Greenberg / Ryley Walker
For Michael Ripps

J.R. Bohannon, Ben Greenberg and Ryley Walker are a trio of guitarists who have collaborated to make the sprawling improvised album ‘For Michael Ripps’. Each artist brings their own style to proceedings - Greenberg is part of noise-rock band Uniform, Bohannon makes experimental rock in Gold Dime, and Walker is known for his jazz-flecked folk. Guitars intertwine here, breaking into riffs and repetitions that demonstrate how much the musicians are in tune with each others' ideas.

Amy Winehouse
Frank (Half-Speed Master)

Frank was the debut album by Amy Winehouse. She made a massive impact with this upon its release in 2003. Firstly as a major new talent had just unleashed itself on the world and secondly because her lyrics didn’t pull any punches, hence the title. The title is also a nod to one of her heroes, Frank Sinatra. This edition has been half-speed mastered by the artisans at Abbey Road Studios for highest quality audio.

Silver Jews
Tanglewood Numbers

Tanglewood Numbers was the 2005 album that saw the Silver Jews become something more of a rock band rather than the acoustic country-ish affair invented to underpin David Berman's poetry. It saw former Pavement folks Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich back in the band and was an upbeat, almost bar room affair as always with clever and insidious lyrics lurking beneath the country rock bluster.

First Aid Kit
Who By Fire

Over two nights at the Royal Dramaten Theatre in Stockholm in March 2017, Swedish indie/folk act First Aid Kit paid tribute to the songs and poetry of Leonard Cohen. They did so with an ambitious theatrical staging that involved guest actors and artists, and eight-piece band with strings and a twenty-piece choir. ‘Who By Fire’, a double-LP live album, commemorates those two evenings.

Johanna Warren
Chaotic Good

Representing a shift away from her neo-folk origins, Chaotic Good is the fifth studio album from singer-songwriter Johanna Warren, and her first for Wax Nine / Carpark. Constructed largely solo in her garage and fleshed out with the help of a few key helpers, the music is driven by grunge-esque guitars and passages of quiet piano.

Agnes Obel
Island Of Doom

Island of Doom by Agnes Obel is the first single to be taken from her fourth album, Myopia. The Berlin-based Dane isolated herself from all outside influences to write, record and produce the album all by herself. The process gave her the freedom to experiment in the studio and make the music she really wanted to make. Include instruemental version on the B-side.

Julien Baker
Little Oblivions

‘Little Oblivions’ is the third studio LP by US singer and guitarist Julien Baker. On previous albums she has poured out her soul, sparsely backed by guitar or piano, but this time out her indie-rock/indie-folk/slowcore musings come fleshed out with bass, drums, mandolin, keyboards and banjo. If previous records ‘Sprained Ankle’ and ‘Turn Out The Lights’ are anything to go by then this will be well worth parting with your cash for. Also, 'Little Oblivions' Baker's first solo album since collaborating with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus in Boygenius.

Passenger
Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted

'Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted' is the thirteenth (thirteenth!?) album by the English singer-songwriter Passenger - also known as Michael David Rosenberg - and explores his love of English pop music like The Kinks, The Smiths and The Beatles. It was all recorded in his own studio in Brighton and if the title is anything to go by should appeal to absolutely everyone in the human race as we all fall into at least one of those brackets.

Sam Amidon
Sam Amidon

Sam Amidon’s seventh studio album ranks as his most accomplished to date. A self-titled effort, it sees the American singer reunite with trusted lieutenants Shahzad Ismaily and Chris Vatalaro - as well as his wife Beth Orton on backing vocals - on an album of compelling originals and adapted traditionals.

E.B. The Younger is Eric Brandon Pulido, the frontman of Midlake. To Each His Own sees him stepping out on his own for the first time, although it’s not his first album without his Midlake bandmates. He was part of BNQT, a supergroup including members of Franz Ferdinand, Band of Horses, Travis and Grandaddy. Pulido sees the album as a way to diplomatically solve artistic differences within Midlake. LP and CD on Bella Union.

With their ability to harmonise the way they do, the extra emotion that’s gone into this LP makes for a stunning listen.

Kacy & Clayton and Marlon Williams
Plastic Bouquet

New Zealand singer-songwriter and guitarist Marlon Williams was so blown away when he heard a song by American country/folk duo Kacy & Clayton that he just had to work with them. 'Plastic Bouquet' is the result of their collaboration. This is an album of old-time country seamlessly blended with psychedelic soul. The whole may even be greater than the sum of its parts.

Juanita Stein
Snapshot

Juanitia Stein is best known for fronting Australian indie band Howling Bells. Snapshot is her third solo album. It was recorded as a reaction to the sudden death of her father - the person who instilled a love of music in her from a young age. The subject matter is sad and heavy, but Stein’s soothing voice makes it endlessly listenable. It was produced by Ben Hillier who has worked with Blur, Doves and Nadine Shah and features her brother, Joel, also from Howling Bells, on guitar.

Prior to the pandemic, Jim Ghedi has been known as a guitarist - and a good one at that. However, the absolutely state of things has meant that he has used his voice for the first time on 'In The Furrows Of Common Place'. The album delves deep into folklore and history to corroborate things from the past into the current situation. The result is a more personal album of rootsy folk songcraft that takes a look at society in these unprecedented times.

This Is The Kit
Off Off On

This Is The Kit were steadily building a fanbase until 2018’s breakout LP 'Moonshine Freeze' earned them a whole host of new fans. The band meant to follow up 'Moonshine Freeze' almost immediately, but project mastermind Kate Stables got distracted by an invitation to join The National (as you do). 'Off Off On' proves to be well worth the wait though - this is a collection of idiosyncratic, slightly folkish indie-rock tunes which will appeal to fans of Jeffrey Lewis and Big Thief.

Laura Veirs
My Echo

My Echo is singer / songwriter Laura Veirs 11th solo album. It details the struggles of her ailing marriage - although at the time of writing the songs she didn’t necessarily know that. As the album was being finished, Viers and her husband, Producer Tucker Martine had separated. Some of the songs started life as poems she had been writing for a monthly poetry group. Guest appearances include Jim James, Bill Frisell, Karl Blau and M. Ward.

Kevin Morby
Sundowner

Inspired by a move back to his native Kansas from L.A., and recorded to a Tascam four-track in a converted shed with, 'Sundowner' is the sixth solo album from the prolific Kevin Morby. It's an LP which claims influence from the surroundings in which it was made, particularly the sprawling landscapes and open spaces of Middle America. Sound-wise 'Sundowner' is, y'know, Kevin Morby - Bruce Springsteen, Wilco, that sort of thing.

Bob Dylan
Highway 61 Revisited

Colombia are reissuing Legacy Editions of a whole brace of classic Bob Dylan albums, not that they seemed at risk of falling out of print. Highway 61 Revisited dates from 1965, and marks the point on record where Dylan moved firmly towards rock forms. Includes ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ and ‘Ballad Of A Thin Man’.

Alex Maas
Luca

The lead singer of Texan psychedelic-rock outfit The Black Angels for over fifteen years, Alex Maas announces his debut solo album. More bucolic and folky than his parent band, in the vein of artists such as Vashti Bunyan, ‘Luca’ benefits from the production of film score composer Brett Orrison.

Kiko Dinucci
Rastilho

A member of Metá Metá and collaborator with the likes of Tom Zé, Criolo and Elza Soares, guitarist Kiko Dinucci channels the great Brazilian musicians such as João Gilberto and Jorge Ben on solo album 'Rastilho'. Influences of jazz and classical Brazilian music are filtered through his punk vision here.

Jon Gomm
The Faintest Idea

'The Faintest Idea' is the fourth album by Blackpool-born singer-songwriter and guitar maestro Jon Gomm. Gomm is known for his unique guitar playing style which sees him using his instrument to make a whole world of sounds. Australian musician Andy Sorenson contributes some glacial synth work to an otherwise warm album. Think Kaki King trying to cover Marc Almond or something - pretty impressive stuff.

Red House Painters

Robbie Basho
Visions of the Country

In 1978 Robbie Basho released the legendary Visions of the Country. Coming relatively late in a career which saw him, alongside John Fahey, develop the 'American Primitive' guitar tradition, Visions of the Country is a remarkable album filled with spirit, emotion, and ruggedness. The guitar playing is raw and intense, and his singing is just breathtaking. A marvel.

Cordovas
Destiny Hotel

Cordovas are a band who spend every moment together. They live, eat and garden together in East Nashville. Their music is inspired by nature and mysticism. Destiny Hotel is an album of soulful Americana and southern rock - guitars, harmonies, hammond organs - you know the kind of thing. On ATO Records.

Old 97's
Twelfth

Old 97’s are one of the original ‘90s alt country bands, or as band leader Rhett Miller refers to them ‘loud folk’. Twelfth is their, you guessed it, twelfth album. Some rockin’ melodic tunes here - definitely an album for road trips with the top down, if you happen to live in a country that doesn’t rain so much. It will still sound great blasting out of your stereo as the rain hits your living room windows, though.

Elliott Smith
Figure 8

Shabby and shambling of appearance, Elliott Smith's look matched his songs in his earlier records. He was he weird loner who would win the race because he was so damn good. On Figure 8 they airbrushed both his face and his sound making a slick and polished record that saw those loveable rough edges smoothed away. Still they couldn't completely ruin Elliott Smith and Figure 8 features many examples of his the Beatles-esque prowess with a haunted melody. "I'm the wrong kind of person to famous" he once said and it's true  - we loved him just the way he was.

Bon Iver
Bon Iver

It's probably safe to say that you won't be seeing Justin Vernon playing his debut For Emma, Forever Ago in its entirety in concert anytime soon as the Wisconsin based artist tends to move on drastically from every release. Indeed this self titled follow up to his now legendary debut changed his musical map completely. This time lots of musicians (including saxophone ace Colin Stetson) were brought in to flesh out his sound resulting in a completely different imprint which is either a bold step forward or a cluttered mess depending on how attached you were to his first record.

Aldous Harding
Designer

Aldous Harding’s critical and commercial acclaim really picked up following her last album, Party. She’s following it up with Designer. She recorded the album between Wales and Bristol with John Parish (PJ Harvey) and it includes guest appearances from H Hawkline and Sweet Baboo. LP and CD on 4AD.

John Prine
John Prine (Live)

Following his passing earlier in 2020, interest in the great American singer-songwriter John Prine is at a high. 'John Prine (Live)', originally released in 1988 and the first live document he ever put out, captures the great man at his most intimate and avuncular over three nights at The Coach House in California. As good as guitar-helmed singer-songwriter fare gets, this.

Johnny Lloyd
Cheap Medication

Former Tribes frontman Johnny Lloyd follows up his 2019 solo debut album and his acclaimed score to Sky Atlantic’s ‘I Hate Suzie’ with 'Cheap Medication'. Inspired by classic and modern rock spanning Simon & Garfunkel to The War On Drugs, it’s easily the most accomplished and mature collection from Lloyd so far.

Scott Walker
Climate of Hunter

Typically of Scott Walker, his eleventh album (originally released in 1984) is both experimental in sound and texture but features guest spots from the mainstream likes of Mark Knopfler and Billy Ocean. There's no-one quite like him is there? This was a 'comeback' album released ten years after his previous solo LP and shows his music becoming ever more fractured. Next stop: Tilt.
