Even A Tree Can Shed Tears: Japanese Folk & Rock 1969-1973

This Light In The Attic compilation looks rather fantastic, historicising folk music from the tail-end of 1960s Japan. Cited as a period of growing political and cultural action amongst the country's younger demographic, Even A Tree Can Shed Tears arguably acts as a retrospective to music that was at its time unprecedented, with these artists seeking their own, particular sound through folk music.

Sean O'Hagan
Radum Calls, Radum Calls

The lead singer of The High Llamas and a regular member of Stereolab, Sean O’Hagan is one of these islands’ most formidable avant-pop musicians. But it’s been a whole 29 years between his two solo albums, with Radum Calls, Radum Calls appearing on Drag City. Full of intriguing collaborations and O’Hagan’s typically understated, sideways lyrics, it’s great to have him back!

Morgan Lebus
Under The Moon

Morgan Lebus was an  LA-based musician. He recorded the songs on Under The Moon in 2002. Whilst he still remains active in the music business, he just doesn’t make music anymore, so these songs are the last he ever recorded. One of his mates just happens to be James Yorkston. Yorkston played the songs to the people at Triassic Tusk who were excited enough to release them on this here 7” single.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
I Made A Place

Ooh it's been a long while since a fully original Bonnie 'Prince' Billy album. The last one was in the middle of the Obama presidency in fact - and to think people had the wherewithal to moan about that tenancy. Now, just as the world is ending we get a proper new BPB album because he realises that there is never a right time for a new album from one of the more loved artists of his generation. Let's just celebrate him whilst he is alive and healthy.

Richard Hawley
Richard Hawley

This is Richard's Hawley's first solo album after a varied carreer in Pulp, Longpigs and others. The story goes that Hawley was sat backstage strumming one of his lovely songs when he was overheard by John Power out of Cast who said something like "what the fook are you doing with those set of bell ends when you should be doing this" or words to that effect. The rest is history. This is lovely stuff, I preferred Hawley like this when he was he made things sparse. It has a wonderful Northern working mans club feel. Something you'd sing on the way home from sinking 5 pints of Trophy, staggering into the rain, back home to a nice wife.

Richard Hawley
Lowedges

Richard Hawley's soft but always commanding voice is the centrepiece of 'Lowedges', a record of gentle, carefully crafted chamber pop that brings together Wilco-esque drumming, country twang and an almost ambient approach to making rock 'n' roll. With his brooding and crooning, along with all the musicians ornamenting him, Hawley recalls artists such as Bill Fay.

Will Samson
Paralanguage

Paralanguage is the fifth album by Will Samson. The album was inspired by the experiences following the sudden death of his father and experiences with magic mushrooms. It even includes some vocal performances recorded whilst experiencing the effects. The album had some musical assistance from violin player Beatrijs De Klerck who plays with A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Ben Lester and Jeremy Boettcher who play with S. Carey.

Tom Waits
Glitter and Doom Live

Here is a collection of highlights from Tom Waits’ 2008 extremely well-received tour Glitter And Doom, which seems to be the last time he gifted the world with a full tour. The live album is presented in two parts, with disc one the ‘straight’ (relatively speaking) live album and disc two made up of ‘Tom Tales’, e.g. strange spoken musings by the great mystery man. Essential part of the big Waits puzzle.

Neil Young
After The Gold Rush

Neil’s 1970 masterpiece is sublimely balanced. The lonesome piano stoner anthem of the title track, the eerie / uplifting Don’t Let It Bring you Down, Only Love Can Break Your Heart’s hippy wisdom, a pair of Crazy Horse rockers, and a few weepies. There’s not a song here that wouldn’t be an essential setlist inclusion for most artists, but this is Neil we’re talking about. Hence the charming miniatures Cripple Creek Ferry and Til the Morning Comes are relatively overlooked and Tell Me Why rarely gets a live airing. The recent remaster was a revelation and best of all on vinyl.

Nico
Chelsea Girl

This is the first Nico solo album and a long long way away from the inspired but terrifying avant churn of albums like Desertshore. Here she is in full on folk mode and with covers of songs by the likes of Lou Reed, Jackson Browne and Tim Hardin this is a lovely pastoral work of art that stands on it's own as her one moment of real conventional music making.

Lana Del Rey
Born To Die

Lana Del Rey released Born To Die and spent a great deal of time breaking pop music with her contentious but incredible songs and their sombre, devastated predilections. Melodic and melancholy, and emo before the emo revival, Born To Die resulted in a handful of pretty eternal singles, from "Born To Die" to "Blue Jeans".

Silver Jews
Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea

Ah...well we thought this might be back in stock this week. Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea was the final Silver Jews album before David Berman disbanded the group for the unusual reason that his musical output could never undo the damage his dad (a corporate lawyer) had done to the world. It's probably the Jews most polished record and sees Berman's distinctive baritone sitting on top of lush country-ish arrangements. Album highlight San Francisco DC is a hilarious seven minute narrative that is not to be missed.

Bon Iver
Bon Iver

It's probably safe to say that you won't be seeing Justin Vernon playing his debut For Emma, Forever Ago in its entirety in concert anytime soon as the Wisconsin based artist tends to move on drastically from every release. Indeed this self titled follow up to his now legendary debut changed his musical map completely. This time lots of musicians (including saxophone ace Colin Stetson) were brought in to flesh out his sound resulting in a completely different imprint which is either a bold step forward or a cluttered mess depending on how attached you were to his first record.

Angel Olsen
All Mirrors

On her fourth album, All Mirrors, Angel Olsen shows us her darkest side. Its introspective nature was an important step for Olsen. Through its brooding tones and lyrics she tells us about learning to trust yourself and move on, find peace in your own company. Valuable lessons, perhaps. On Jagjaguwar.

Richard Dawson
2020

Despite album artwork and a title that seem like they belong to an Ed Sheeran record, '2020' in fact belongs to the UK's other great singer songwriter slash troubadour. I am of course talking about the wonderful Richard Dawson, who has helped drag the UK folk tradition into 2020 and beyond.

Songs: Ohia
Love & Work: The Lioness Sessions

The Lioness was one of Jason Molina's most loved works under his Songs: Ohia moniker. This was the album he recorded in Scotland with Alasdair Roberts and members of Arab Strap guesting. This 2LP re-issue has been expanded to include  no less than seven outtakes from the sessions plus some other recordings from a Lissy's session. Totally essential for any fan of the man's work.

Neil Young
Dead Man: A Film By Jim Jarmusch (Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture)

Dead Man is Jim Jarmusch’s self-proclaimed ‘psychedelic western’. Neil Young improvised most of the soundtrack as he watched and played along it in his studio. This way he was able to give a raw response to the drama and emotion. It mixes his acoustic and electric meanderings and is interspersed with Johnny Depp reading the poetry of William Blake.

Josienne Clarke
In All Weather

Josienne Clarke, best known for being one half of an eponymous folk duo with Ben Walker, goes it alone on debut solo LP, In All Weather. Clarke took herself off to the Isle Of Bute to write the album. Her paired back guitars are augmented by piano from Elliott Galvin, drums from Dave Hamblett and harp from Mary Ann Kennedy.

Nick Drake
Five Leaves Left

Five Leaves Left was Nick Drake's debut LP on Island and probably counts as one of the most autumnal records ever made. It's understated and hushed take on folk music was not a hit at the time but slowly over the years it found an audience of like minded sensitive souls. Notable for Robert Kirby's brilliant string arrangements, this is a gorgeous work not to be missed.

Jo Foster
I'll Be Thinking Of You All The Time

The lady on the right looks like my grandma I know nothing more about this record. The press release just says 'lovely single this'. I've just nipped onto Bandcamp to have a listen and yup...that's pretty accurate. It's a piano and vocal jaunt. Jo Foster has a nice wee sweet voice and the song is very Christmassy. The B side Your Young Voice was written by Kenny Anderson (King Creosote). Limited 7" on Triassic Tusk.

Shawn Lee
Rides Again

Absolutely amazing hair. Like J. Mascis but supersized. Look carefully and 'neath that hat 'n' hair combination lies Shawn Lee the lauded UK based American born singer songwriter. Here he goes back to his roots and makes a soulful country album with nods to Glen Campbell and J.J. Cale. Touchingly, he's dead proud of it and so he should be (both of the record and the hair).

Richard Hawley
Lady's Bridge

Lady's Bridge was the fourth album by old romantic Richard Hawley and the first to feature him sprawling on a chair in silver trousers on the cover. It is another tender and moving record from the songwriter and contains Tonight the Streets are Ours one of his best and most well known anthems. For the uninitiated, think about a Sheffield Roy Orbison crooning songs in smoky South Yorkshire pubs and you'll be somewhere in the ball park. Classic sounding stuff as always.

The Walker Brothers
Nite Flights

One of the most unusual records of all time. Nite Flights was then forgotten '60s combo The Walker Brothers 1978 comeback album. It was split into contributions by each band member with Scott Walker getting just four songs. The album is worth buying just for those four songs as they pave the way for his future more experimental work. Its title track invents everything that happened in the early '80s basically. Astonishingly unusual.

Bryter Layter

Bryter Layter should obviously be in your record collection, and luckily you don’t have to spend £1,000,000 on a crackly old dog of a copy anymore. Island have faithfully remastered and reissued this beautiful thing from the (almost) original master tapes, and packaged it so it’s just like how your Dad would have bought it back in the day. PLUS you get high-res digital files of the tunes, as well as all sorts of trinkets and gubbins to help you imagine like you was there in 1971, baby.

Neil Young
Harvest Moon

Ah Harvest Moon. Like Bat out Hell 2, it's a key example of how an artist going back to an original blueprint can reap dividends. On Harvest Moon Neil Young captured the vibe of his original Harvest album, with a series of beautifully evocative acoustic songs including utterly essential closer Natural Beauty.

Jessica Pratt
On Your Own Love Again

On Your Own Love Again is Jessica Pratt’s second album following her 2012 debut. It offers dreamy, subtle, folk melodies punctuated by Pratt’s beautiful, childlike voice which almost has a Bob Dylan lilt to it. It beautifully chimes along with American folk from the 1960s. A charming record to get lost with on a Sunday morning.

A collection of rare and unreleased material spanning 16 years from 1967 to 1983 by reclusive American guitar figure, Robbie Basho. Jim Sullivan
If The Evening Were Dawn

Light In The Attic continue their run of Jim Sullivan releases with If The Evening Were Dawn, a previously-unreleased set of tracks taped way back in 1969. Sullivan disappeared in 1975 and has not been found since, so his music will have to do the talking for him. And what music If The Evening Were Dawn is - Sullivan’s story gives these wistful countryfied folk songs even greater power than they would have on their own terms.

Mark Hollis
Mark Hollis

Following the sad passing of Mark Hollis earlier this year we all collectively turned back towards the impressive career arc of his band Talk Talk. Lesser referenced was his self-titled solo album released in 1998. It didn't help that the record was out of print at the time but this re-issue is a chance to wallow again in the intimate grooves of a record that was initially intended to be released under the Talk Talk moniker. It is a gorgeous thing full of woodwind, jazz- inflected drumming, pastoral guitar and Hollis's fascinated mumbling verse. So quiet that you can hear the squeak of the musicians chairs. Essential.

Mount Eerie
A Crow Looked At Me

Here is something very special indeed. A new Mount Eerie album is always something to be cherished but this one deals with the grief and loss suffered by Phil Elverum following the tragic passing of his wife. To put this sense of loss into his art ....well I just hope in some way it was cathartic for him. The results are almost unbearable - a tear-drenched simply recorded music on love and loss that is sure to be one of 2017's most important albums.

Mount Eerie
Now Only

The creative process for Mount Eerie's Now Only took place just after the release of the lavishly praised A Crow Looked At Me (winner of our own Album of the Year 2017, of course). Here, Phil Elverum continues his candidly lyrical and artistic exploration of the loss of his wife Geneviève. The record follows his powerful, affecting memories and the minutiae of their lives together.

Mount Eerie
Dawn

Who hasn't spent winter alone in a remote cabin in Norway? Certainly that's how Phil Elverum spent his 2002-  2003 winter (for the record mine was spent in Pudsey). It may have been cold and bleak there (Norway not Pudsey) but it gave Phil the time to sit down with his guitar and pen this the third Mount Eerie album which contains nineteen short songs some of which were reprises or different versions of previous Mount Eerie and the Microphones songs.

Lost Wisdom pt. 2

Eleven years after they first collaborated together on 2008’s Lost Wisdom, acclaimed songwriter Phil Elverum and former Eric’s Trip bassist Julie Doiron join forces again on a Mount Eerie album. Lost Wisdom pt.2 is more expansive and even more emotionally resonant than its predecessor, ruminating on love, mutual commitment and coping with release from it.

Matt Valentine is taking a break from his project with partner Erika Elder known as Mv & EE. His solo album, Preserves, was seemingly recorded in space where occasional blues grooves and Pink Floyd-style pleasantries burst out from ethereal synths and stardusted noises. Who would you rather spend time with in The Most Wonderful Time of the Year than Aidan Moffat? He's bound to be a cheery presence around the table and here hooks up with pal RM Hubbert for an album of Christmas themed songs including a rendition of Mud's 'Lonely This Christmas'. Also contains their version of Yazoo's 'Only You' which is kind of Christmassy after it was covered by the Flying Pickets.

Enhet För Fri Musi
Det Finns Ett Hjärta Som För Dig

Formed as a folk / experimental music collective in the Swedish city of Gothenburg in 2015, Enhet För Fri Musik is constructed from members of many other underground groups from different disciplines. Their 2017 album, Det Finns Ett Hjärta Som För Dig, sold out rapidly, but now gets a deluxe re-issue on vinyl.

Hurt Valley
Glacial Pace

Inspired by a trip to the wilderness of California’s Death Valley almost ten years ago, and one that inspired the formation of the band after they came across essentially a dumping ground for old vehicles despoiling a beautiful landscape, Brian Collins’ Hurt Valley project delivers a striking album in Glacial Pace.

Giant Sand
Glum (25th Anniversary Edition)

Glum was the 11th album by Giant Sand and was originally released in 1994, hence this 25th anniversary reissue. The band, helmed as ever by Howe Gelb, also featured Joey Burns and John Convertino who went on to form Calexico, singer / songwriter Victoria Williams, Pete Holsapple of the dB’s, Chris Cacavas, Pappy Allen and singer / songwriter Lisa Germano. Their dusty Americana was, on this occasion, described by comedian Stewart Lee as ‘infant free jazz’.

Rachael Dadd
FLUX

Though her surname is Dadd, Rachael Dadd plays nothing like dad-rock so anyone else other than me with that thought can get it right out of their heads. Instead she plays a kind of conceptual, contemporary folk music that has already lauded her plaudits across the globe. This her her first on Memphis Industries following on from work with a slew of different labels. Like most other records in 2019 it in inspired by and a protest to the recent political landscape.

Scott Walker
The Drift

A mere eleven years in the making, The Drift was the long long long awaited thirteenth solo album by former '60s heartthrob Scott Walker. It pushes Walker's increasingly avant-garde sound way into the abstract on an unsettling often tortured album that sees his rich brown baritone fraying at the edges as it competes with ever more out there material.

Arda & The Stolen Moon
Minutes Into Years

Arda G, the central figure of Arda & The Stolen Moon, is an Armenian-Cypriot singer-songwriter from the indie-folk school whose material cuts right to the heart of her life and loves. Scott Walker
Tilt

Contrary to what it may seem, ‘Tilt’ was not a complete shift in trajectory for the former pop star Scott Walker. Prior to its release in 1995, Walker had spent years finding ever more oblique methods to communicate his ideas, however, is undoubtedly true that ‘Tilt’ was his most daringly realised attempt yet. Desolate, ardently experimental, but also beautiful, a pathway which would lead to later opuses such ‘The Drift’, ‘Bish Bosch’, and ‘Soused’ - his collaborative LP with drone metal legends Sunn o))) .

VELD

Daniel O’Sullivan, of Grumbling Fur, Ulver and Aethenor (and that’s not all!), is in solo mode on VELD, but that doesn’t mean he has limited himself to a single approach. Red House Painters
Red House Painters / Rollercoaster

The high watermark of Mark Kozelek's career was both reminiscent of his earlier, more dour slowcore and indicative of the sombre guitar sage he'd become on early Sun Kil Moon records (before he became The Worst). Rollercoaster is a classic, a singer-songwriter record that languishes with the form in favour of sprawling, introspective tunes -- plus the odd bout of shoegaze bloodletting.

Josh Rouse
The Holiday Sounds Of Josh Rouse

The Holiday Sounds of Josh Rouse by Nashville-based folk/pop singer/songwriter Josh Rouse is, what we’d call over here in Blighty, an album of Christmas songs. These songs have a ‘60s jazz flavour about them with its overriding influence seemingly being the 1965 album, A Charlie Brown Christmas by The Vince Guaraldi Trio.

Scott Walker
Til The Band Comes In

'Til The Band Comes In' was Scott Walker's sixth record, originally released in 1970 and consisting of two distinct sides: on the first, Walker gives us a bunch of new solo material, while on the flip there are covers on covers. While Walker started as a renowned pop crooner with a baritone and a lot of melodrama, 'Til The Band Comes In' has hints of the artist who would eventually stop all that easy listening and go hard with the avant-garde.

Sheffield’s favourite classic-style rock singer-songwriter Richard Hawley returns to your stereos with Hollow Meadows, album number eight in his oeuvre. Hawley broods and ponders on mature subject matter, backed by arrangements both richly orchestral and grittily direct (especially when Hawley’s guitar solos come into play).

Bruce Springsteen
Springsteen on Broadway

Der-ner-ner derrrr ner-ner-ner, on Broooooadwaaaaay! Unfortunately this new collection from The Boss doesn’t feature a cover of the classic ‘60s paean to Manhattan, but Springsteen On Broadway makes up for it by featuring plenty of Bruce. Taped at his 2017-2018 run at NYC’s Walter Kerr Theatre, this collection is a masterful retrospective from a man ageing more gracefully than most. Springsteen chats and croons his way through some of his hits from down the years. Occasionally his wife Patti Scialfa turns up to accompany him.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Colorado

Colorado is the first album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse since the epic Psychedelic Pill in 2012. The band believe that they had it in them to make an album that was equal to their best material, so they got together and gave it a go. This particular incarnation of Crazy Horse include Nils Lofgren on guitar and piano.

Pinegrove
Marigold

Having released three previous studio albums to date, American indie stars Pinegrove begin the new decade with their debut for Rough Trade. Described by lead singer Evan Stephens Hall as bearing a “heart-first” perspective, Marigold is the most ambitious take on their distinctive blend of folk, indie and country yet, as well as being their most empathetic and humanistic.

Michael Kiwanuka
KIWANUKA

Just to make absolutely sure that you know it’s him, Michael Kiwanuka has gone for his own (sur)name as the title of his third studio LP. KIWANUKA sees the singer tripping down a bit of a psychedelic soul route - tracks like ‘You Ain’t The Problem’ are shimmering What’s Going On-type things that coalesce around Kiwanuka’s poised, soulful singing. Dangermouse and Kiwanuka’s longtime ally Inflo are the producers.

Moon Bros.
The Easy Way Is Hard Enough

Moon Bros. is the music-making moniker of Matthew Schneider. Carpenter by day, guitar picker by night. As he does have a day job, he’s avoided lots of cliches such as who his music should be referencing or just showing off. The Easy Way Is Hard Enough is the work of a refreshingly unpretentious stringsmith, the kind of thing we might just need right now.

Common Holly
When I say to you Black Lightning

When I Say To You Black Lightning, the second LP from Montreal singer-songwriter, is a charming set of indie-styled balladry. Tapping into the folksiness of Devendra Banhardt, Regina Spektor’s forthright attitude and Deerhunter’s murmuring ambient punk style, the one born Brigitte Naggar proves a beguiling and captivating central figure here. When I Say To You Black Lightning is out via Dalliance (Gia Margaret, Wilsen).

Simon Joyner
Pocket Moon

A singer-songwriter veteran with a long-established cult profile, Simon Joyner chose to throw a lot in the air for his latest album 'Pocket Moon', asking friend and collaborator Michael Krassner to source unknown musicians for him rather than relying on familiar players. The results are different yet completely familiar to Joyner’s fans, full of his cliche-free observations on the joys and cruelties of life.

the innocence mission
See You Tomorrow

See You Tomorrow is the 12th album by Pennsylvania indie-folk types The Innocence Mission. It is their second for Bella Union after 2018’s beautiful Sun On The Square. Sufjan Stevens is a big fan of the husband and wife-led three-piece and has even covered their song ‘Lakes of Canada’.

Strand Of Oaks
Pope Killdragon

Strand of Oaks second album, Pope Killdragon was originally self-released in 2010. Like the debut, Leave Ruin, released the year before, The sparse instrumentation and hard-hitting lyrics stand out. Strand Of Oaks
Leave Ruin

Leave Ruin was the debut album by Strand of Oaks, the project of Timothy Showalter. He took inspiration from a pretty good place by looking back to On The Beach-era Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen’s early years. His candid lyrics and intimate atmosphere created by the musical arrangements make for a powerful album.

Strand Of Oaks
Dark Shores

Timothy Showalter, the man behind Strand Of Oaks, wrote the songs for his third album, Dark Shores, whilst touring his previous album, Pope Killdragon. This time, the songs were recorded with a full band creating a rockier sound. Showalter cited Neil Young as an influence once again. Dark Shores was produced by John Vanderslice, or ‘The Slice’ as some like to call him.

Kevin Krauter
Changes

The excellently named Kevin Krauter gets a UK edition of his 2016 EP Changes courtesy of Winspear (The Lemon Twigs, Barrie). The HOOPS fellow’s sophomore solo release is a beautifully wistful blend of folk, hypnagogic pop, country rock and bossa nova. There are strong notes of Ariel Pink and Haruomi Hosono.

Itasca
Spring

The fruits of geographical relocation are well-documented. Like Bowie and Iggy's move to Berlin, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Itasca found that the move to New Mexico yielded delicious fruits that eventually coalesced into the form of her new album 'Spring'. It's a testament to the revitalising powers of change and the profound impact that setting can have on the aesthetic sensibility.

Andrew Jackson Jihad
Can't Maintain

The folk-punk band were formed in Phoenix, Arizona and will go down well with fans of Neutral Milk Hotel, Mountain Goats and Xiu Xiu.

Keeley Forsyth
Debris

Keeley Forsyth is an Oldham-born actor-turned-musical artist with an exceptional, raw and emotional vocal delivery. You may have seen her in all sorts of things from Coronation Street to Luther, but these days it’s all about the music, which, in turn is mostly all about her voice, and for now her debut album, Debris. RIYL Scott Walker, Aldous Harding, Nico, Cat Power, PJ Harvey and stuff like that, really.

Aoife Nessa Frances
Land Of No Junction

Land Of No Junction is the debut album by new Irish artist Aoife Nessa Frances. SHe makes music which could be likened to Cate Le Bon, Aldous Harding and Norman Records faves Broadcast but most definitely puts her own indelible stamp on things. The title comes from a trip to Wales as a child when she mis-heard train station Llandudno Junction. It was produced by Cian Nugent. Oh, and her first name is pronounced EE-fa.

Bob Chance
It's Broken

The classic privately-pressed record re-issued for no other reason that it's pretty darn interesting. Bob Chance self released this in 1980 and seemed to be trying to make something somewhere between Bob Hope and Giorgio Moroder but what comes out is a kind of repetitive Arthur Russell-in-disco-mode slab of lo-fi pulse. As eccentric as it comes and just look at that sleeve...and those arms!

Micah P. Hinson
Micha P. Hinson & The Gospel Of Progress

Re-issue of Micah P Hinson's first album from 2004 where we all enjoyed his music and didn't know too much about his politics. It's a quiet and spectral record that shows off his rich and dark brown voice which sings sad lullabies sort of in the vein of Smog. Underneath is an orchestrated tapestry of alt country yearnings with organs, flutes and strings fleshing out the quiet meditations.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit
Here We Rest

Released to coincide with his inaugural ShoalsFest in early October at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama, Jason Isbell reissues his third studio album Here We Rest, and his second with his backing band The 400 Unit. The re-mastered record, done under the aegis of Pete Lyman, comes also on translucent blue vinyl.

Scott Walker
Scott 4

From way back in 1969, Scott 4 is a classic of intense and majestic songcraft; the first set of entirely Walker penned songs combining sophisticated, easy-listening pop with lyrical complexity touching on the darkest of subject matter. Seen as a something of a commercial flop at the time of its release compared to his four previous albums, Scott Walker connoiseurs now consider this to be amongst his best work.

Little Scream
Speed Queen

'Speed Queen' is the third album by Little Queen AKA Montreal-based Laurel Sprengelmeyer. It sees her reflecting on the social divisions in America, with many of the lyrics written whilst touring through the country. Coming from a low-income background herself, she has observed how the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer and she's not happy about it.

Father John Misty
I Love You, Honeybear

With a slew of understated folk records secured under his own name and a hell of a fun time had playing soft percussive noises for Fleet Foxes, J. Tillman returns to his Father John Misty project, where he mixes esoteric lyricism with brazen folk rock arrangements. I Love You, Honeybear follows on from Fear Fun.

Big Thief
Two Hands

"I have two hands" - the words of synth wizard Viv Savage. Big Thief are the latest band to do that 'record two albums at the same time' thing  - see also Beach House. So if you bought this years U.F.O.F and are still enjoying it then you can move seemlessly into its sister album. Basically it seems where U.F.O.F was wet then Two Hands is dry both in the weather conditions at recording time and in the sound produced. Here the songs were recorded live with few overdubs as the band showcased their latest batch of songs with a no frills, bone dry approach.

Kath Bloom & Loren Connors
Moonlight

Moonlight is the second Kath Bloom & Loren Connors re-issue this week and was their final album released in 1984 before the dissolution of their partnership as both took time away from music for the best part of a decade. It sees the duo playing in a more intuitive, freeform style than earlier records with Kath's delicate songs backed up by Loren's supportive playing. This re-issue of the original short run pressing includes digital bonus tracks of rare of the era live recordings and is available in two vinyl colours (while stocks last).

Scott Walker
Climate of Hunter

Typically of Scott Walker, his eleventh album (originally released in 1984) is both experimental in sound and texture but features guest spots from the mainstream likes of Mark Knopfler and Billy Ocean. There's no-one quite like him is there? This was a 'comeback' album released ten years after his previous solo LP and shows his music becoming ever more fractured. Next stop: Tilt.

Eiko Ishibashi
The Dream My Bones Dream

Eiko Ishibashi is a remarkable artist, somehow equally at home singing heartfelt, delicate lounge-jazz pop music and collaborating free-improv style with Darin Gray and, er, Merzbow. The Dream My Bones Dream is a songs record, though it is rich with details of instrumentation and texture. Jim O’Rourke fans should know that Eiko’s playing is all over his recent work, and he returned the favour by mixing this. On Drag City.

Erin Durant
Islands

Erin Durant is an artist who knows the difference between power and volume. The Brooklyn-based pianist has her roots in New Orleans. Her piano led ballads have a certain swagger, imbued with the spirit of her home town. Her style also recalls For The Roses-era Joni Mitchell, Joanna Newsom and Regina Spektor. Islands was produced by Kyp Malone of TV On The Radio and features a guest performance from Kath Bloom.

Bert Jansch
Avocet (Expanded Anniversary Edition)

A luxury white vinyl re-issue of what some regard to be Bert Jansch's best work. Avocet was initially released in 1979 and is a gorgeous instrumental album inspired by British birds. It shifts his brilliant, twisting guitar playing away from traditional folk and more towards a kind of proto neo-classical sound. This 40th anniversary edition comes with bonus tracks and writings by collaborator Danny Thompson.

Up On High

With its warm acoustic tones and candid vocals, 'Up On High' is the dexterous works of American folk outfit Vetiver. Frode Haltli
Border Woods

Border Woods is the second record by Swedish accordion player and composer Frode Haltli. It contains folk inspired compositions balancing the old wheezebox itself with nyckelharpa which is a kind of keyed fiddle popular in Sweden. This latest album strips back the sound of the larger ensemble compositions of last years Avant Folk album to create a varied album of nordic jams and improvisation.
