Matt Jencik
Dream Character

Judging by the distorted facial image on the front cover of his sophomore solo album, Matt Jencik should probably have titled the record ‘Nightmare Character’. As it is, Dream Character is a disorientating and often unsettling experience, making use of a much wider range of recording techniques than the deliberate simplicity involved in making Weird Times two years ago.

Sandoz
s/t

Richard H. Kirk is most famous for being a member of Sheffield industrialists Cabaret Voltaire. He also struck out on his own in 1992 under the name Sandoz, a name taken from the lab that developed LSD in the ‘30s. He has released 12 albums under that name to date. Second Circle have been sifting through his archive and found four tracks that were originally released in the early days of his solo career and made one stunner of an EP.

CEL
CEL

CEL is the duo of Felix Kubin and Hubert Zemler. Kubin who you will know from a myriad other projects handles the electronics and zemler the percussion. Together they come up with seven instrumentals ranging from electronic pulses, ghostly synths and teutonic grooves. It's a wild ride with some out-there collaboration as you may expect. the wildest thing though is the press release we've been sent. Read it and believe that Kubin actually melts plastic and concrete with his music.

Vladislav Delay Meets Sly & Robbie
500 Push Up

An intriguing new LP resulting from a meeting between prolific Jamaican production duo Sly and Robbie and Finnish artist and remixer Sasu Ripatti (a.k.a. Vladislav Delay), 500 Push Up was built out of extended jam sessions in Kingston, and mixed back in Finland to produce an album of curious sonic experiments.

Yuri Urano
Autline

Yet more club goodness from Central Processing Unit (BMX Krew, Paul Blackford) here. Yuri Urano’s style is a little more rough-and-ready than the buoyant electro fare the Sheffield label has become known for. Autline’s title track, for instance, is a clanging techno number that recalls Peder Mannerfelt’s ‘Equality Now’. Meanwhile ‘Pec’ is acid of a stronger strain than we usually find on a CPU drop.

HAAi
Systems Up, Windows Down

After regular Radio 1 slots and festival-slaying DJ sets, new Mute signing Teneil Throssell - known better as Australian-born producer HAAi - presents her first EP for the label. Systems Up, Windows Down is a step up in production terms from her self-released mixes, with every element of her psychedelic, melodious music sharpened up.

Michael Cashmore
The Doctrine Of Transformation Through Love II

If, like me, your grain is doing somersaults trying to recall Michael Cashmore then let me assist you by reminding you that he is the long term composer of Current 93 as well as collaborator with the likes of Marc Almond and Anohni. His latest work is the second of a series exploring a personal transformation and is a deeply experimental but melodic work with nods towards techno and electronica. Little Annie guests on vocals.

Too Free
Love in High Demand

Straight out of Washington (and that's DC not Tyne and Wear) are Too Free  - a three piece who feature ex members of Merchandise and Big Freedia. The trio use the landscape of their hometown to inspire kinetic and freewheeling avant dance-rock high in improvisation and low in tried and true structures. Forward thinking avant-dancefloor certainly with nods to Arthur Russell and Anohni (to these ears anyway).

Rejoicer
Spiritual Sleaze

Having collaborated with the likes of Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dudley Perkins as well as being a part of Buttering Band, Tel Aviv-based star Rejoicer delivers a new solo album of glorious hybrids of jazz and electronica, which will delight any fans of Flying Lotus or Brainfeeder’s roster. Laurie Spiegel
The Expanding Universe

Megatron edition of Laurie Spiegel’s groundbreaking 1980 LP ‘The Expanding Universe’ here. All four of the original tracks are included here, remastered for extra shine, radiating vibes that would later be picked up on by the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never and Tim Hecker. On this new pressing ‘The Expanding Universe’ is expanded yet further by a whopping fifteen bonus tracks - many of which are previously unreleased.

The Normal
Warm Leatherette/ T.V.O.D.

You may already be familiar with the story behind The Normal’s only single, but let’s go through it once again for good measure. Daniel Miller set up Mute Records in 1978 with the intention of releasing two tracks he’d made on his own with a Korg synthesiser. ‘T.V.O.D.’ and ‘Warm Leatherette’ were weird, dystopian and darkly sexy tunes. Minimal wave was born and Miller had changed the course of post-punk. He’d also started up one of the most successful British labels of the 21st Century.

Soundway Records Present - Ten Cities

Soundway brought together as many electronic artists as they could count on about ten hands and asked them to collaborate in a variety of different recording studios. A noble and intensive undertaking, no doubt, but the result is a rainbow of sounds, from dubstep in one city to jazz in another and techno in the one over from that -- I mean, I don't need to tell you where the techno comes from, right? 'Soundway Records Present - Ten Cities' celebrates the vibrant specialism of the world's greatest sonic cities.

Matt Anniss
Join The Future: Bleep Techno & the Birth of British Bass Music

Lovingly and knowledgeably penned by dance music expert and journalist Matt Anniss, Join The Future tells the fascinating story of the evolution of ‘bleep’ techno, a sub-genre of British dance that originated in Yorkshire (and particularly with Sheffield’s Warp Records) in the early Nineties during a particularly fertile period of creativity for the wider scene, and which evolved to become one of the most beloved styles in electronica. Features interviews with artists, producers, label owners and DJs as well as first-hand accounts of critical moments and raves.

Move D + Benjamin Brunn
Let's Call It A Day

First time on vinyl double LP pressing of this album from German artists Move D + Benjamin Brunn. Deeply blurred rave and long loops that drift on for an immersive 76 minutes.

Olafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm

Caterina Barbieri
Born Again In The Voltage

When Caterina Barbieri says that she was Born Again In The Voltage, she really means it. Barbieri claims that, back in 2013, her first encounter with a Buchla 200 synthesiser completely changed how she thought about music. A year later and the classically-trained Barbieri was cutting spacious electro-acoustic workouts on the 200 at Stockholm’s Elektronmusikstudion alongside cellist Antonello Mostacci. Four of the rich synthscapes created in those sessions are presented by Important Records here.

Opening with wubbing kitsch keys, 'Summer Jam' is the lo-fi and bright works of enigmatic producer Tapes. Smagghe & Cross
1819

1819 is the new album by Smagghe & Cross, their second for Offen Music. They are ostensibly an odd couple. Ivan Smagghe is a DJ and producer, and Rupert Cross is a composer. The electronic duo’s music tends to lean in the direction of the experimental as you could well imagine from their respective backgrounds. Here we have an album that harks back to a time that never existed, but they feel it’s worth reminiscing anyway.

It marked a shift away from their debut Homework in being more inspired by R&B and disco than the earlier Chicago House influenced sound. The Black Dog
Black Daisy Wheel

Beloved electro-grumps The Black Dog are back with a pair of distinct albums on the theme of dismal, hysterical post-truth media society. Black Daisy Wheel tackles its dystopian theme in a subdued, ambient style, with uneasy textures and characteristically gloomy synths drifting about. Occasional beats find their way in, such as on the dubby ‘We Must Repeat’. There are also moments of total, aching beauty, such as the climax of ‘Cognitive Dissident’.

Djrum
Seven Lies

Luxury re-press of the 2013 debut LP from Djrum (DJ Rum?) courtesy of 2nd Drop (Tessela, Ramadanman). A distillation of the highlights of the 2014 compilation originally released in 2014 as 3LP + 3CD box set, comprising an audio ‘sketchbook’ of German electronic music composer Hans-Joachim Roedelius during the so-called ‘Forst years’ working closely with Cluster and Harmonia. Tape Archive Essence 1973-1978 boils the set down to an easily digestible single-disc release.

Peter Howell & The BBC Radiophonic Workshop
Through A Glass Darkly

Through a Glass Darkly is a seminal document in terms of synth music. Peter Howell began work on the album in 1977 with the brief to create music to fill one side of an LP. The result is a low budget classic and ranks alongside great works by the likes of Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre.

BBC Radiophonic Workshop
Fourth Dimension

A vinyl only reissue of Paddy Kingsland of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's 1973 solo album, 'Fourth Dimension'. Much sought after by synth-sniffers the world over, this record features plenty of VCS 3 and 'Delaware' Synthi 100 action backed by a 1970's session band. Includes funfair favourite and Doctor Who Theme B-side 'Reg'.

Jorja Chalmers
Human Again

Bryan Ferry is still quite the old charmer at the ripe old age of 77. When Jorja Chalmers moved to the UK from Australia and started performing old twinkle trousers saw her and invited her to join his band. Her debut Human Again was made in those times on tour when Ferry wasn't swanning about and she set about making some art rock in the style of David Bowie and Ferry's old nemesis Brian Eno. Produced by none other than Johnny Jewel this should appeal to fans of the  likes of John Carpenter and of course Chromatics.

King Midas Sound
Solitude

Sardonically released on Valentine's Day, this is the best one yet from King Midas Sound, once again stripped back to the duo of Kevin Martin (The Bug/Techno Animal) and poet/music-maker Roger Robinson. The tone is icy and bitter, the many narrations consumed by spiteful jealousy in a post-brakeup haze. All the rhythmic pulse of dub has now subsided, a wraith-like presence which blankets Robinson's malice fuelled spoken word.

Ff
Ffeeling

Claiming a huge range of influences including Daniel Miller, Frank Zappa, P-Funk, Steve Reich and many more weird and wonderful acts is Ff. Not a funny Welsh consonant but a band and art collective made up of Antronhy of Bivouac and Dave W. of White Hills. A little bit disco, a lot of synths and vocals like you  might expect given their influences. Pink vinyl.

Interstellar Funk presents
Artificial Dancers – Waves of Synth

Dutch DJ Interstellar Funk, who you may also know as Private Eyes and Faster Action (alongside Robert Bergman), has compiled and curated a 2LP that celebrates synth and wave music from the early ‘80s until now. The Human League, Liaisons Dangereuses, Chris and Cosey sit alongside lesser-known artists such as Batang Frisco, Matthias Schuster’s Im Namen Des Volkes project and Zahgurim. Worth it alone for the killer '83 demo from 4AD legends Clan of Xymox.

Jlin
Autobiography (Music from Wayne McGregor's Autobiography)

Jlin continues her ascension into the pantheon of all-time greats with her score for Wayne McGregor’s Autobiography. It’s typically fervid work from the Gary, Indiana producer. The poise of her high-art, post-footwork style is even sharper than usual here. One can only imagine how riveting these pieces would be when wed to McGregor’s choreography, but the music alone will do just fine.

Principleasure
I

After a run of hype-building EPs throughout 2017 and 2018, 2019 sees LA producer Principleasure drop his debut LP. I is a collection of techno that also incorporates elements of 2-step, blog house, vaporwave and Italo Disco. Moments like ‘Hexagonal Dab’ verge on industrial but steer away through clean production and chunky melodies. It’s no surprise to hear that Dixon and AME dig Principleasure’s I.

Rupert Clervaux
After Masterpieces

Rupert Clervaux of Sian Alice Group and CVX now strikes out with a solo record of his own under his own name, titled After Masterpieces. Brainwaltzera
Epi-Log

As the old saying goes, one person’s EP is another person’s mini-LP. However, Brainwaltzera can’t seem to to make up their mind which side to come down on - we heard that the six-track Epi-Log was the latter, but the FILM Records Bandcamp thinks otherwise. Whatever it is, it’s another fine release from the mysterious producer. The tracks here include retrofuturist jams ala Jam City’s Dream A Garden (‘Bad Endgar’), lurching IDM (‘CountDempops’) and Brainfeeder-style MPC work (‘Laif Of Smit’).

SK U KNO (Suzanne Kraft)
NUMERO U KNO

Absolutely killer three-track from Suzanne Kraft’s SK U KNO alter-ego here. NUMERO U KNO kicks off with the barnstorming ‘Shopbeat’, a track that sounds like a first-wave grime instrumental cross-bred with something by Special Request. Expect the thing to tear the roof off the club when it gets dropped. RAMZi drops by to help out with the wistful deep house jam ‘Founded (SK Mix)’, and NUMERO U KNO closes out with the humid, D Tiffany-style cut ‘Accelerate Me Wildly (Middlesex Edit)’. Wicked.

Operating Theatre
Miss Mauger

Dublin's All City imprint have long been scouring the back alleys of Irish jazz, electronica and post-punk to find hidden gems, the latest of which is by 1980s era synth-pop act Operating Theatre. The group were short lived  - eventually signing to U2's Mother label but soon imploding. They created a fascinating take on the new wave sound of the day somewhere between pop and electronica. Singer Olwen Fouéré went on to become a Hollywood actress you know?

Floating Points
Ratio

Sam Shepherd, or as we know and love him, Floating Points made a bit of a statement with his 2015 debut album, Eleana. He followed that up with Reflections - Mojave Desert, a soundtrack to a short film. With his latest release, Ratio, he is returning to his earlier days when he made dancefloor-ready material. This vinyl version presents the track in a deconstructed form, splitting the 19-minute epic in two parts. 12" on Pluto.

Be careful about googling that title because... everyone will think you're a massive nerd. Goblin Wizard Cauldron Spell is the debut release from Medieval Ditties Compendium (props for staying in character), by The Mail Coif who you may know as Tapes. Imagine if the bards of yore had access to the synths of... less yore. Very fun.

Expanding Space

Mostly known for his more conventionally classical music, in 1985 Per Nørgård composed and recorded a solo electronic trip of cosmic proportions. Freed of the constraints of the ensemble, Nørgård's Expanding Space is a rhythm-less, melody-less and harmony-less epic that was intended to be both meditative focal point and discrete ambience. Reissue by Institute for Danish Sound Archaeology.
