Amnesia Scanner
Another Life

They took their sweet time about it, but four years on from their breakout mixtape AS Live [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ] Berlin-based duo Amnesia Scanner have delivered their debut LP. Another Life is, of course, a record as brilliant as it is difficult to pin down. The pair’s sound has always been a helter-skelter mix of genres glued onto an industrial-techno chassis, and with the dozen tracks of this record they draw on everything from chopped-and-screwed tapes to trance. Pan Daijing guests on two tunes.

Karlheinz Stockhausen
Adventures In Sound

Karlheinz Stockhausen is an artist that every music lover should give a go at least once in their life. The German composer’s theories about everything from form to notation to sound itself revolutionised art music in post-war Europe. In one way or another his work has influenced pretty much genre to come after him. Worth a listen, then, and this new compilation Adventures In Sound provides a good way into the composer's ouevre.

Sone Institute
Where Moth and Rust Consume

The first Sone Institute work in six years finds itself Where Moth and Rust Consume. What possessed Roman Bezdyk to make an album about our Phil’s wardrobe we may never know. Returning nonetheless to ol’ pals Front & Follow for their new release series, the Institute presents an album of leftfield trip-pop and charming/unsettling mid-fi atmospheres.

Bendik Giske
Adjust

Oslo artist Bendik Giske here articulates the music, narratives and musical narratives of club culture using little more than a saxophone. If it sounds a bit strange it’s because it is, but Giske’s highly focused and expressive project is also very compelling and gorgeous. Comes armed with remixes and reinterpretations by the motley crew of Total Freedom, Lotic, Deathprod and Rezzett.

Beacon
Gravity Pairs

The duo that is Beacon have changed it up a little from their previous two albums, setting out to create songs from moment one rather than focusing on loop-driven compositions. So should we say Beacon have gone pop? Well, perhaps a bit, but that would be to undermine the impressive attention to detail that has gone into the sound and textures of Gravity Pairs’ tracks. On Ghostly.

Richard Devine
SortLave

Richard Devine returns after six years with his new album Sort/Lave. It sees the Atlanta, Georgia-based electronics whizz throwing up opposing textures using his custom built modular system. The pieces flit between sandpapery percussion and glorious ambience. The album was conceived and recorded over the last two years. Triple LP or CD on Timesig, a Venetian Snares imprint.

Sowas Von Egal: German Synth Wave Underground 1980-1985

The excellent Hamburg-based label Bureau B have unearthed more rare synth gems, to compile: Sowas Von Egal: German Synth Wave Underground 1980-1985. Not your typical '80s synth comp; this collaboration with the Damaged Goods party DJs has brought to light some remarkable, seldom heard music  ranging from post punk and synth wave -- all originally released in very small quantities, often by the bands themselves and sold at their gigs -- all pressed in the first half of the 1980s. Available as an LP or on shiny new CD.

Harmonious Thelonious
Petrolia

Harmonious Thelonious is the electronic outlet for Dusseldorfer Stefan Schwander, which he uses to explore both African and American minimalism, while always keeping that sweet sweet danceability to the fore. Full-length Petrolia is particularly high energy, with especially tasty live-instrument contributions from Ghazi Barakat. Its out on Marmo Music.

Ailie Ormston
The Sedate

Ailie Ormston is back, though not quite as you knew her. The affable, wry dreariness of her band ******** gives way on this solo effort to something harder, more minimal and even *gulp* deconstructive. Fortunately, Ailie doesn’t take this stuff as seriously as many other musicians seem to and the result is crucially as entertaining as it is enlightening. Apparently all done with just one drum machine and one synth, and all.

Kelly Moran
Ultraviolet

Kelly Moran signs to Warp for her third LP of prepared piano compositions. Moran is a member of Oneohtrix Point Never’s live band, and there is certainly a shared aesthetic between OPN’s recent work and the digitalia of Ultraviolet. ‘Helix’, for instance, is a combination of Philip Glass-esque piano runs and hot, hissing MIDI fauna that would make Daniel Lopatin proud.

The Radiophonic Workshop
Possum

Possum is a new British horror film from the mind of Matthew Holness (Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place). It is the first time that The Radiophonic Workshop have scored a film. Their 50 years as pioneering electronic sound-makers, known for the original Dr. Who theme and who have counted Delia Derbyshire among their number, are the perfect fit for Holness’ weird vision. 6 panel digipak CD on Room 13.

Keir Vine
Instance

London’s Trestle Records (City Shepherd, Adam Coney) drop a record from famed keyboardist/hang player Keir Vine. The Instance EP is rather different to the plush post-jazz that Vine dishes up as part of Portico Quartet. These eight tracks are built around droning church organs, field recordings, found sounds and little snippets of piano. They've got a bit of a Ghost Box flavour to it. It all adds up to a really nice listen.

Jay Daniel
Tala

Tala is the new LP from up-and-coming Detroit DJ, Jay Daniel. He is making waves is the electronic music world and is a major name in the new Detroit scene. He has a connection to the early ‘90s, however, as his mother, Naomi Daniel, added her vocals to a couple of Carl Craig-produced Planet-E releases - Stars and Feel The Fire. Jay Daniel currently holds a residency in Detroit with friend and mentor, Kyle Hall. Double LP on Watsui High.

Long Distance Poison
Astro Topoi

Deep Distance returns from its slumber with a new slice of kosmische for your weekend cloud nine. Eric Copeland
Trogg Modal Vol. 1

Eric Copeland - he of Black Dice fame - turns in a record of bleep-bloop goodness for DFA. The first volume of his Trogg Modal series finds Copeland exploring the freakbeat club sound that he locked into on 2017 full-length Goofballs. Fusing lo-fi techno, Balearic house, minimal synth beat and … generally weird shit, Copeland has come through with another befuddling yet beguiling LP here.

Thighpaulsandra
The Lepore Extrusion

Originally released on a limited run by Brainwashed Recordings in 2006, Thighpaulsandra’s The Lepore Extrusion gets reissued by Klanggalerie.(Konstruktivists, Nurse With Wound). It’s a typically unusual work from the Coil/Julian Cope collaborator, with main affair ‘The Leport Extrusion’ a single piece that shifts between spacey drones and vocal-led concrete ala Karlheinz Stockhausen. This new pressing comes with a bonus track.

The 15 Dead Minutes
Bio-Evolved

It's been a wee while since we last heard from The 15 Dead Minutes aka David Froud (Heuristic Audio) and David Campbell (Delinquent Dialect). Their collaborative work first appeared on Irish label Trensmat and later on Sunil Sharpe's Earwiggle imprint. Now the duo return with an ace four-track EP of seething and infectious cuts blurring the lines between techno/electro/industrial. All tracks bang and rattle in all the right places and are heavy in terms of both sound and emotion. Only 300 copies with killer artwork by Yamako King.

Ultrafog
How Those Fires Burned That Are No Longer

Kouhei Fukuzumi has released a couple of cassettes for Japanese label Solitude Solutions and Spain's Angoisse imprint and now makes his vinyl debut as Utlrafog on Los Angeles' excellent Motion Ward label -- their previous release was an ace from uon (West Mineral Ltd.) 'How Those Fires Burned That Are No Longer' runs the duration of a mini-album, and is pure bliss from the off - with the torch song like ambient of opener 'Swallow', the more zoned and trippy 'OIO', and dreamy droner 'Golden Tundra'. On the flipside the beautifully majestic 'Trace' precedes the fluttering tropical Fourth World ambient of 'Scent' before 'Cependant' has us riding the skies. Tip for fans of uon, Space Afrika, GAS, Huerco S. etc.

ETXC002

The second instalment of Eotrax’s collaborative series sees label boss Eomac of Lakker hook up with Migro/Klein artist Seán Carpio. Steven Julien
8 Ball

Steven Julien has taken a break from his Funkineven moniker of late to release a few records under his given name. 8 Ball grows the lo-fi boogie style of April’s Bloodline mini-album. While ‘TEER’ is a luscious jam inspired by ‘80s electro and synth-funk, A-sides ‘BLK808’ and ‘POT808’ are both tough drum machine workouts that would sound at home on labels like Central Processing Unit and Super Rhythm Trax.

Aphex Twin
Selected Ambient Works 85-92

Not sure that you need us to introduce this one to you. The album that broke Aphex Twin to the masses (relatively speaking), Selected Ambient Works 85-92 starts with two genuinely sublime pieces of music, ‘Xtal’ and ‘Tha’, which your collection literally cannot be without. The whole thing is great though, whether for solo listening late at night or for esoteric dancefloors. An absolute classic.

Alexis Taylor
Rubbed Out

Bespectacled Hot Chip crooner Alexis Taylor was just a wee nipper when his debut solo LP came out on Treader Records back in 2008. A decade on and Rubbed Out finally gets a vinyl release. This is a tender and charming collection of home-taped ditties, all of which are dedicated to his partner. There’s a lot of Love Is Overtaking Me/Calling Out Of Context Arthur Russell in here.

Kostis Kilymis
Second Saturation

A fresh new Tapeworm, plucked from the ground. And what does it contain? Why, two sides of exciting materials from Kostis Kilymis of course! The work presented here is grown out of a Stockholm live performance and some sweetly detailed field recordings, all treated and processed by various means, some of them pleasingly dubby. Second Saturation is a tape on The Tapeworm.

Zeno van den Broek
Entrop

Cassette label The Tapeworm have been running a tidy racket for almost a decade now. Since 2009 the London label has released great little tapes from the likes of Stephen O’Malley and Derek Jarman. Their 111th release (very satisfying, that) comes courtesy of Dutch composer/sound-artist Zeno van den Broek. To create Entrop, van den Broek built a synth, modded it with feedback loops and set it to trigger percussive sounds on a drum computer. The musical results bridge noise, music concrete and IDM.

1991
No More Dreams

Details are scarce-bordering-on-non-existent about the artist known as 1991: perhaps the historical year itself has produced these tracks? Anyway, we can tell you that No More Dreams (the name of the label as well as the album) is an eerie thing, sliding between hazy tunes and washed-out ambience like an electronic dream. Peter Gordon
Eighteen

Peter Gordon’s first LP in three years arrives courtesy of Foom (Rhys Chatham, Peter Zummo). On Eighteen Gordon is ably assisted by Gabe Guernsey (Factory Floor), Larry Saltzman (Arthur Russell) and Paul Nowinski (LOLO) here. The group craft instrumentals of autumnal beauty that are at once too woozy to be dance music, too silvery to be r&b, and too synthetic to be soul. They are what they are, and they are beautiful.

Burial
Rodent

Burial remoulds 90's Garage/House into his own vision on 'Rodent', applying his signature production tricks to a classic bouncing and shuffling template of skeletal drums and big subs. He loops vocals samples in 'Untrue' style, adding heavenly synth to create that magical, melancholy sound he just totally owns. There's even a touch of Vangelis flavoured saxophone for some additional romance. Hyperdub bossman Kode9 deconstructs and reconstructs the core elements into a frantic footwork cut, heavily influenced by Chicago but with his own twist, in a similar mode to his 'Nothing' album.

Belia Winnewisser
Radikale Akzeptanz

Radikale Akzeptanz is the first release of Belia Winnewisser as a solo artist, and it beautifully marries together her synth-pop experience in bands with her sound art practice. So the tunes are there, as are the sturdy beats and rhythms in places, but also more unexpected textures, tones, and structures. An exciting mix. On Präsens Editionen.

EOC
The Path of Untitled Memories

The promising Mirae Arts with their third release here. This one’s courtesy of Katsunori Sawa’s EOC (Enormous O’Clock) project. The Path of Untitled Memories represents a change of pace for Mirae Arts. Whereas previous drops from Seraphim Rytm and Michiru Aoyama have been largely or wholly ambient works, The Path Of Untitled Memories is a no-BS body-techno affair that nods to the Echochord school. Good craic.

Saloli
The Deep End

The Year Zero for Mary Sutton’s debut LP as Saloli was a performance at a clothing-optional soaking-pool sauna. In attempting to make music for people relaxing in hot bubbly water, Sutton came up with these sounds of warm, tranquil beauty. The generative point of The Deep End encourages comparisons with Yamaneko’s Spa Commissions, but the sounds here lean more towards the New Age reissues of Seance Centre. Out via Kranky (Tim Hecker, Dedekind Cut).

Autarkic
Treble Rebel

Rich, zany club tunes from Tel Aviv’s Autarkic, which looks like what a parrot might say if it heard the word ‘Autechre’ once. It does not, however, sound like anything of the sort. A new full-length album from busy Ukrainian sound-worker Oleg Shpudeiko, aka Heinali. Sometimes deep in ambient drifts, and sometimes pumping beats, this material is always strong for those who like some electronic adventure.

Unclassifiable production duo and lifelong friends Arne Schaffhausen and Wayne Raabe having been concocting sounds together for twenty years. Stranger Things: Halloween Sounds From The Upside Down (A Netflix Original Series Soundtrack)

Stranger Things. You like it. We like it. Everyone likes it. Netflix’s answer to Twin Peaks often throws in a fair dose of spook to up the ante. With Halloween just around the corner the series’ music directors Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein have compiled 14 of their creepiest compositions for Stranger Things: Halloween Sounds From The Upside Down. Daniel Brandt
Channels

Daniel Brandt (of arpeggio-techno krafters Brandt Brauer Frick) is back for another round of restless, jittery rhythms with Erased Tapes. Channels seems to follow on from last year’s Eternal Something, being of an acoustic-electronic hybrid tapestry of instruments (pianos, brass, bass, strings), synthesisers and prepared objects resulting in animated, melodically rich leftfield dance tunes.

Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2 EP

Available on 12” Vinyl and CD. After Syro, the first material from Richard D. James under his Aphex Twin moniker in 13 years, dropped near the end of 2014, I think most of us hoped that it wasn’t going to be an equally long wait. Joan Bibiloni
El Sur

El Sur is a premium example of the jazz-ambient-fusion-synth-experimentalist-groove sound produced by Joan Bibiloni during the 1980’s. He set up his own label, Blau, to showcase both his own work and the work of others across the Balearic islands, and this was one of the jewels in the Blau crown. Herbert Bodzin
Revival II - The Electronic Tapes 1979-1982

The Artless Cuckoo label follow up their collection of Herbert Bodzin's archived jazz-rock and fusion stylings on 'Revival' with Revival II - The Electronic Tapes 1979-1982. All the music  is previously unreleased and the recordings reflect his preoccupation at that time with electronics: analog and modular synths such as the ARP 2600, Korg PS-3300 and Roland System-700. The set is made up of ambient, psychedelic and experimental sounds with Bodzin's two sons Stephan and Oliver as well as Bernd Hollendiek lending extra synths and drums. The record should happily nestle somewhere amongst Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and Cluster in the collections of synth lovers and Krautrock fans. A finally-retrieved document of German electronic music. Limited edition of 500 copies.

Themes & Variations

Mønic’s Osiris Music (Kryptic Minds, Kamikaze Space Programme) drop four tracks that map out some different kinds of weightiness currently popular in the clubsphere. Overlook continues to impress with the nightmarish D n’ B of ‘Former Self’; Pessimist’s ‘Indigo’ is an eerie bit of soundsystem techno that would sound great soundtracking an episode of Black Mirror. The flipside sees the label boss deliver two wedges of dark, dubby almost-techno, the second of which is a Grebenstein collaboration.

Concretism
For Concrete and Country

Some good old-fashioned idiosyncrasy from Concretism here. For Concrete And Country synthesises much of the Great British oddball lineage - the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Ghost Box Records, Public Service Broadcasting etc. - with a newly-resurfaced Cold War paranoia. It’s the aural equivalent of a day out in Dungeness. The fact that the artwork was done by Richard Littler (the brains behind Scarfolk) only adds to the sense of strangeness.

Morgan Fisher
Inside Satie

Morgan Fisher has had quite the career. Having been about for 50 odd years, Fisher was with the one hit wonders Love Affair in the ‘60s, moving onto Mott The Hoople and then into ambient and soundtracks with Yoko Ono among others. It is Fisher’s admiration of Erik Satie that inspired Inside Satie - an album of charming improvisations and surreal experimentations. Something Satie himself would have been proud of.

Maelstrom
Fragment

More electro from the Central Processing Unit label. This time it's from Maelstrom, who returns to the label after July 2018's ECZO, with the four-track EP Fragment. The bass is as tough as you might expect, and I think I detect a hint of acid? I'm no expert. Most impressively Maelstrom is not afraid to vary tempos over the EP so Fragment will have something for every DJ.

Radius
Interpolation Tapes [Restoration 2/3]

A real treat for any fans of Radius. Interpolation Tapes [Restoration 2/3] is the result of a whole years work restoring the music from its original tapes which had begun to decay. Despite all these tracks have been through, the result is as fresh as Radius has ever been. The second release of three.

Patrick R. Pärk
Library Sounds

Not sure if you can make an album inspired by library music and then just call it Library Sounds, but hey, what does it matter when those sounds are so pleasant? Patrick R. Park created these eleven tracks of ambientish, synthish, vibey music for you to enjoy in the background, but we reckon it more than warrants foreground listening too. On Castles In Space.

Shlohmo’s 2012 EP Vacation has been long gone for a long time, but Mr Shlo has kindly taken pity on those who missed out with this new repress, on the Friends of Friends label. Vacation includes three original tracks, as well as four remixes of other artists in an LA Beat Scene style, including Airhead and Nicolas Jaar. Pick it up this time!

CUTS
A Slow Decay

CUTS’ new 12” A Slow Decay delivers on the promise of the two Exist EPs with one more appetite-whetter before his debut full-length A Gradual Decline lands. A Slow Decay, taken from that record, shows off a deep, icy spaciousness that sometimes drifts and sometimes explodes. Plus two exclusive B-side tracks.

Matthew Dear
Bunny

Dear Matthew, thanks for releasing a new album. I don't know what it sounds like yet. I'm told that it's kinda moody and ominous which would certainly offset the fact that it's named Bunny, because rabbits are incredibly cute. I've also heard that Tegan and Sara feature on a track, which is easily the best news I've had all year. I'm sure this record will speak to your need to make a myriad different sounds all the time and in good avant-pop ways. Thanks XOX Norman.

Tangerine Dream
The Pink Years Albums 1970-1973

Tangerine Dream’s first four records are yoked together for a reissue by the Esoteric sub-label Reactive. Not too much more to say about the quartet of LPs that make up The Pink Years: Albums 1970 - 1973. People went cuckoo for the forward-thinking Kraut-tronics of Electronic Meditation, Alpha Centauri, Zeit and Atem back in the day. This package, containing for CDs and a poster in a nice little box, is a good way to bring them back into your life.

James Ginzburg
Six Correlations

James Ginzburg might be better known to you as 50% of Emptyset, that most crushing of electronic music projects. This solo record, which was put together for a Berlin commission earlier this year, engages with a wider palette than that group, with folk musics of many different hues mixing with generative composition. Six Correlations is out on Subtext.

The Future Sound Of London
Archived 9

Jumpin' & Pumpin' follow 'Archived 8' with -- you guessed it -- the ninth volume in their ongoing series of unreleased music from the apparently inexhaustible Future Sound Of London archive. 'Archived 9' brings together another dozen tracks, some of which have been reconstructed and embellished upon and mixed to complete a new album of work in its own right, worthy of sitting next to 'Lifeforms' or 'ISDN'. Archived 9 is available on CD.

David August
D'Angelo

David August has always felt an affinity to the parts of him that came from Palestrina in Italy. On D'Angelo he takes his first steps in exploring this feeling in public. Recorded in Italy (by necessity), the album is a muscular mixture of Balearic pop and darker sounds of the noir soundtrack.

Phono Ghosts
Photons In Fashion

So what Blackpool’s Phono Ghosts does is sample some tapes, run them through an audio workstation on his computer, then chop them up and reassemble them to form new shapes. The resulting tracks that make up Photons In Fashion are a hypnagogic re-rendering of ‘80s synth sounds. As in - Vaporwave. That said, the way that this set of ‘wave jams layers up its vocals is a tad more psychedelic than your Macintosh Pluses and your James Ferraro’s.

Tim Stebbing
The Atmosphere Factory (1985-1991)

The Atmosphere Factory (1985-1991) is a compilation of tracks by Leeds-based bedroom-synth practitioner Tim Stebbing. He was little known at the time but this collection should change that as his compositions foreshadow Boards of Canada whilst comparisons have been drawn to Manuel Gottsching and the soundtracks of John Carpenter. LP, limited to 300 copies on Ceres Motion.

Siavash Amini
Foras

Siavash Amini's rain-textured drone has wowed us ever since What the Wind Whispered to the Trees, where neutral environmental grounds found vulnerable, almost songwritten ambience. Foras is his sixth solo record in as many years and sees him continue to traverse these liminal spaces, considering the very way our surroundings lead our emotions, considering architecture as psychology. You must cop this.

GAIKA
BASIC VOLUME

Gaika has been threatening a masterpiece for a while now. In his debut LP BASIC VOLUME he might just have made it. Over the fifteen tracks here he weaves together far-flung musical legacies - D’Angelo, Future, Popcaan and Arca are all discernable influences - into a record of dark potency. Dre Skull, Sophie and Jam City are among an impressive list of co-producers.

Space
The Best of Space

For a moment I thought that Phil had lost his mind but no, this is not the 'best' of the Female of the Species Liverpool band but the original Space - a kind of prototype Daft Punk. Their big hit was 'Magic Fly', an otherworldly tune which summed up their cosmic/disco/synth combination. But there was loads more where that came from and this collection compiles the best bits from their four ahead-of-their-time albums.

King Ende Shneafliet
Dimension Mix 01

Ende Shneafliet were an important band in the Dutch minimal/synthwave scene of the early '80s. Though only active for a couple of years, the group put out a large amount of material via pioneering imprint Trumpett (Doxa Sinistra, The Actor). Now some stuff from their dub-indebted side-project King Ende Shneafliet is being re-pressed by the still-fresh Artificial Dance. Confusingly Dimension Mix 01 features some tracks from the second chapter of the series, released in 1999 but recorded in the seven years after the first instalment was issued in 1981. There’s a sort of Kraftwerk-meets-Pere-Ubu thing going on here.

Krikor
Saudi

After an extremely limited cassette run on Low Jack’s Editions Gravats back in 2017, Krikor’s Saudi now gets a vinyl pressing courtesy of Long Island Electrical Systems (Svengalisghost, Simoncino). The sides of Saudi were originally made for a French TV documentary that focussed on the questionable dealings of the Saudi royal family, and Krikor makes sure to instil his music with plenty of murk and shade. Grainy ambiences evolve into eerie minimal synth numbers, Balearic beats bang a little too loud for comfort, and Krikor generally makes you sit up and pay attention.

David Kitt
Like Lightning

David Kitt made a sharp left-turn back in 2017. His LP Yous put aside the deep house style of his New Jackson project for a record of tender, Arthur Russell-esque folk-pop of the sort that he was last found doing way back in the 2000s. Now Yous highlight ‘Like Lightning’ is getting a standalone release as part of a similarly-titled EP/mini-LP. It’s a charming record that, in its quiet storminess, has a little of late-’90s PJ Harvey to it.

Works dating from 1978 to 1987 are represented here on this collection of material by Russian electronic musician Mikhail Chekalin. Manuel Göttsching
E2-E4

E2-E4: a classic slab of minimal electronica from Ash Ra Tempel wizard Manuel Göttsching. Absurdly, for such a crucial work, the whole hour-long piece was improvised by Göttsching so he’d have something to listen to on his walkman during a plane journey the next day: the mind boggles. 35th anniversary LP reissue with embossed artwork, on MG.ART.

Colin Self
Siblings

RVNG Intl. brings you New York / Berlin artist Colin Self’s sixth and ultimate chapter in his Elation opera series. As you might expect from a pop opera, it’s conceptual, richly detailed and highly nuanced. It also features plenty of good singing. The main idea is that of familial closeness and kinship arising from mutual curiosity and care rather than biological association. Uplifting stuff.

Mike Simonetti
Solipsism (Collected Works 2006-2013)

Between the years of 2006 and 2013 Mike Simonetti busied himself with co-running Italians Do It Better alongside Johnny Jewel. Despite spending a lot of his time planning release schedules for the likes of Chromatics and Glass Candy, Simonetti was able to get into the studio every now and then and lay down some tracks of his own. Solipsism collates these sleek, slow and sexy slices of Italo-Disco as ‘the nail in the coffin’ for Simonetti’s relationship with the label.

Contact Field Orchestra
Vol. 1

Now this is an interesting one. For the first few years of its existence LA label Hit+Run was best known for releasing kush-hazed hip-hop tapes from the likes of Jonwayne and Teebs. However, their releases from the Contact Field Orchestra changed perceptions of the label. Damon Aaron discovered these strange tapes at an estate sale in 2008. Some digging led him to discover that these were field recordings, captured around the beginning of the 20th Century, of a band of miners from the San Gabriel area of California. Aaron then spent some time polishing up the recordings as best he could and, if necessary, filling in parts where the recordings cut out. The result was 2013’s Vol. 1, an album of eerie folk that sounds like some proto-Tom Waits artist released via Death Is Not The End.
