John Maus
Screen Memories

John Maus returns! Six years have passed since ‘We Must Become The Pitiless Censors’ -- during which time Maus has toured, released a rarities collection and finished his doctorate in Political Philosophy. He sounds as towering and stately as ever on Screen Memories; the record is another personal one which will haunt and invigorate. He even designed and built the modular synths he plays on it. Polyphony abounds! LP / CD on Ribbon music.

Bicep
Bicep

This is Bicep's debut album, following up a bunch of 12" records, selling thousands of vinyl, generating millions of streams and being played by just about everyone. One of their 12' releases: "Just" earned this electrifying duo the title of Track of the Year and has been dropped by the likes of Jamie XX.

Zombie Zombie
Livity

Zombie Zombie return from some time doing film scores and er, music for a circus show, with a fully-fledged studio album in the form of Livity. It's a deep experimental trip as usual for these guys, featuring remarkable combinations: some vintage French prog here, some free-jazz sax blast there, some hip-hop swagger on this track, some krautrock synth-pulse on that. Livity is released by Versatile.

Carmen Villain
Borders (Klara Lewis Remix) / Red Desert (Biosphere Remix)

This little 12” contains a veritable cornucopia of talent. As well as Carmen Villain herself, we also have Jenny Hval, making a feature on Borders, and the remixing /  reconstructing talents of Klara Lewis and Biosphere, each offering refreshing new takes on tracks from Villain’s album Infinite Avenue. 12” from Smalltown Supersound.

Steve Moore
Mayhem (Official Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Mayhem (Official Motion Picture Soundtrack) is by Steve Moore from Pennsylvanian synthwave duo Zombi. Mayhem is Steve Moore’s 5th soundtrack. His ability to lure the listener to the edge of their seat, increasing the fear within, as he builds the tension with his analogue synth sounds has made him one of the most wanted horror soundtrack composers out there.

More Than Machine Remixes

More Than Machine is an old 90’s track by Runningonair that was never actually finished or released, featuring drum loops and computer-voice text. Rather than leaving it to gather dust for eternity though, the track has not only been finished, it has been handed out to stacks of interesting artists (from Howlround and Farmer Glitch to Kemper Norton and Clive Henry) for stylistically varied remixing! Only sixty copies around..

Klaus Schulze & Pete Namlook
The Dark Side Of The Moog – Vol. 9-11

The Dark Side Of The Moog Vol. 9 - 11 continues the quite frankly epic archival effort to tunnel through the mass recordings that were made when the legendary Klaus Schulze started working with Pete Namlook in the 90’s using an array of Moog synthesisers. This 5CD box-set is a hell of a trip through the spaceways, and getting this much material allows a stronger insight into the pair’s creative process. On MIG Music.

Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein
Stranger Things 2 (A Netflix Original Series Soundtrack)

The SURVIVE members return with their soundtrack to the second series of the Netflix sci-fi show. Recalling the classic synth scores of Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter is part of their remit, but this isn’t just lazy nostalgic simulation - there’s oodles of inventiveness, sensitivity and drama here. And one can only imagine Dixon and Stein had an absolute blast making it. As Dustin might say, you will not resist these pearls!

Ben Lukas Boysen
Golden Times 1

Ben Lukas Boysen hands over his tracks Golden Times 1 and ‘Nocturne 4’ (taken from the album Spells) to both Max Cooper and Tim Hecker(!) for some vivid and idiosyncratic reworkings. The EP is rounded out with a new Boysen original in the form of ‘Evensong’. 12” on Erased Tapes.

Alessandro Cortini & Masami Akita
Untitled

Masami Akita (King Merzbow himself) and Alessandro Cortini (of Nine Inch Nails) both own an EMS Synthi, and this Untitled release finds them each using the EMS exclusively to produce four sides of seething noisy electronics. The vintage analogue equipment is totally exploited, with vivid results that will interest synth fans and noise fans in equal measure. Double LP on Important Records, presented in a metallic shimmer-print sleeve.

Grayson Gilmour
Red Bull Music Academy Library Series, Vol. 1

The latest cult area of music that Red Bull Music Academy are extending their well-funded reach into is library music, that hidden and quasi-anonymous other world of sounds. They’ve started to commission new ‘library music’ from known artists, and the first one of the series is by New Zealand’s Grayson Gilmour. Interesting experimental instrumentals, also featuring a remix by Paul Jebanasam.

Personable
Oyster

Tracks released by Ged Gengras under his Personable moniker tend to fizz with fresh energy: probably a consequence of his ‘live-in-the-studio’ production approach. House-garage-techno jams with a bounce and a punch, from a real synth talent. 4 tracks on Oyster, which is released by Black Opal.

Mount Kimbie
Love What Survives

As the third album from British electronic duo Mount Kimbie, September 8th released Love What Survives promises to be their most expansive and ambitious yet. Featuring cameos from the Mercury-winning James Blake, just the tracklist highlights the steep progression of this band since their previous 2013 album. Off-kilter indie-dance.

Diggin In The Carts : A Collection Of Pioneering Japanese Video Game Music

A huge collection of 8-bit and 16-bit bleeps and bloops collated by Diggin In The Carts co-director Nick Dwyer, and Hyperdub’s Kode 9. Comprised of thirty four tracks taken from legendary titles released on classic Japanese video game systems - from Nintendo’s Famicom to Sega’s Mega Drive, as well as from earlier platforms less familiar in the West, like the MSX. Obviously ideal for video game enthusiasts, though anyone even vaguely interested in the history of electronic music will no doubt be enthralled by the diversity of melody and tone forced out of such limited chips. Available on CD and digital for now; make sure to keep an eye out for the vinyl release, scheduled for early 2018.

Kaukolampi
I

On this meeting of worlds, techno is spiked with various other sources - krautrock, drone, cinematic synthscapes and electronica - to tell a sombre and unnerving story. Kaukolampi here explore a diverse range of moods and sonic environments, whipping the listener into a subdued, but significant hypnosis.

Heartless

Beloved in the concrete court of Norman is bvdub, the heartbreaking ambient techno artist responsible for a slew of the loveliest releases. Real name Brock Van Wey, his work is both harnessing and expansive, bringing the listener close while scoping out big natural landscapes (check that one on the front cover). Heartless is the twenty-ninth record in this project, if you can believe it, and is purposed to sound a little huger in its layers.

Bruno Spoerri
Voice Of Taurus

A nine-track record from the ever expanding mind of Bruno Spoerri. Another release that shows just how good improvised synth music can be and a great reminder that sci-fi soundtrack synths and futuristic-funk actually can be a cracking combination. Voice Of Taurus is available on vinyl LP from ‘We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records’.

Bruno Spoerri & Reto Weber
The Sound Of The UFOs

Collaboration between Swiss electronic and jazz musician Bruno Spoerri and percussionist Reto Weber made available for the first time since its release in 1978. Taking the biggest selection of synths you can imagine they take you on an intergalactic journey through improvisations that touch on krautrock, techno and spaced out electronics.

Rafael Toral
Moon Field

Highly skilled and storied Portugese sound artist Rafael Toral makes a welcome appearance on Lawrence English’s Room40 label. The sound field Toral employs on this latest album is stark and clinical, but the tones vibrating within are etched deep with studious character, whether it’s a measured guitar drone or a clipped sax ramble.

Bibio
Phantom Brickworks

What has Bibio in store for us this time? Lo-fi pastoral electronics, hi-fi Clarkalike bangers, dollops of disco or some of his peculiar, warm-spirited hybrids of the lot? In fact, Stephen Wilkinson’s new offering unexpectedly consists of semi-improvised, rather long pieces (up to 17 minutes). As the title Phantom Brickworks sort of suggests, these unhurried fellows reflect on the shifting meanings and associations of places as time passes. Another feather for Steve’s bow!

Martin Hannett
Homage to Delia Derbyshire

Martin Hannett is the producer who did all your favourite Manchester post-punk records, but check this out: he also created his own work. Homage to Delia Derbyshire is unreleased material from 1982, made with various synths and electronics. This music feels very intimate and personal, partly because it was not made with public release in mind. Really interesting stuff, released at last by Ozit Dandelion.

Moon Zero
Relationships Between Inner & Outer Space

Moon Zero’s new album, the grandly-titled Relationships Between Inner & Outer Space, begins with a track named for Iceland’s ‘Keflavik’ airport that shimmers and swells into a dense mass of all sorts of melodic and textural sounds, sourced from instruments, tape loops, field recordings and more. And so it continues, in lush Denovali style.

Comes with bonus download code.

Bonebrokk
Hollow Systems

Bonebrokk is honoured to be the first artist to ever be released as a vinyl edition on the Trial & Error label. Hollow Systems is a pounding techno trip in four tracks, bolstered by a fifth track in the form of a Jay Glass Dubs re-versioning of ‘Choose Ur Illusion’. What a treat! Sleek and powerful dancefloor destroyers.

The Neon Judgement
Cockerill-Sombre

The Neon Judgement are another brick in Belgium’s sizzling early-80’s EBM / synth-wave scene. Their Cockerill-Sombre EP, released in 1983, contains their biggest hit ‘The Fashion Party’, which is deliciously cold and sleazily aggressive. Pop Ambient 2018

The release of Kompakt’s annual Pop Ambient compilation is always one of the loveliest musical events of the year: always a warm, luscious swirl of pulsating beats and shimmering synths from some of the best producers in the game. Pop Ambient 2018 features exclusive cuts from Max Wurden & Tore Pfeiffer, The Orb, Kaito and many more. Twelve tracks of goodness on Kompakt.

Odonis Odonis
No Pop

Stark stuff here on Odonis Odonis’ fourth album release. The set-up for the No Pop recording sessions was sparse, with just a basic array of synths and drum machines used to put meat on the bones of musical sketches and ideas. The results are lots of fun, despite the air of exciting malevolence that hangs over the project. On Felte.

Traxman
Tekvision

Even by the standards of Chicago’s footwork scene, Traxman is a prolific musicmaker. What’s even more impressive is that pretty much everything he does is good. His umpteenth LP, out via Teklife (who else?), is another expertly rendered collection of 160-bpm goodness. Rising star DJ Earl features on the groovy 'Be Gagen’.

Gel Set
Body Copy

Gel Set is the solo project of Laura Callier (Simulation). After releases on Modern Tapes and Moniker Records, her second full length album comes on 2MR. Body Copy boasts direct and gritty electro mixed with a heady, almost dreamy electronic experimentation that Chris & Cosey would be happy with.

Autumns
Dyslexia Tracks

Autumn is upon us. Furthermore, Autumns is upon us. That’s Christian Donaghey of Derry, Northern Ireland, dropping the lengthy vinyl “EP” Dyslexia Tracks via Touch Sensitive. Over forty-odd minutes, Donaghey chucks into the cauldron influences from post-punk, noise and dancefloor experimentalism. The results are as aggressive and filthy as anybody familiar with his previous work would expect.

Hvide Sejl, Varg & F. Valentin
Brazil

The original edition of Brazil was released as four cassettes. Therefore this 2LP reissue, gathering together all four parts, is very necessary. Brazil is the work of three Scandinavian electronic wizards - Hvide Sejl (Loke Rahbek), Varg and F. Valentin. Over the four sides expect to hear the span of electronic to organic: sun-kissed ambience, industrial pounding, and works on synth and piano.

DJ Tre
The Underdogg EP

Kode 9’s Hyperdub continues to shine its light on Chicago’s innovative footwork scene. A member of the city’s Teklife crew, DJ Tre’s four tracks unveil his largely as yet unheard production talent while displaying how varied the form has become. From sampling acid master Chip E to throwing in jungle breaks, it's a breakneck ride through the sound of the city’s South Side.

Isnaj Dui
Poiesis

Isnaj Dui, aka experimental musician Katie English, presents her new full-length Poiesis. True to form, she continues to blend sparse motifs created from all sorts of electronic and acoustic sources. Her trademark Orientalist flute is present, if less so than previously. Slow and artful, English covers a spectrum from playful to quite sinister and tense. Poiesis comes in a hand-stamped sleeve, as with all Rural Colours releases.
