Modern Methods For Ancient Rituals

Through a vast array of instruments and processes, in a setting designed to evoke transcendental energies, Anthony Child and Daniel Bean have conjured up a remarkable torch bearer of deep listening. It's a slowly shifting, drone wash of texture and growth that will definitely appeal to fans of Eno, Laraaji and Natural Snow Buildings.

A Certain Ratio
acr:mcr

Reissue of A Certain Ratio's 1990 album, acr:mcr. One of the legendary Factory Record's key acts. Despite avoiding the market saturation experienced by their contemporaries (you'll probably not find them in Urban Outfitters), these dance punk are as fun as anything. Pressed on clear vinyl at 45rpm so you could even play it in a club.

Phono Ghosts
Solar Dream Reel

Apparently Phono Ghosts aka Neil Scrivin aka Meatbingo (Skam) crafts his music by trawling charity shop cassettes for hidden goodness, or even hidden badness: it’s all going to be cut and spliced, chopped and screwed anyway. The double vinyl release Solar Dream Reel has a strange and groovy vibe: as the project name suggests, you can feel the spirits of the old music pushing through from the other side of the mix. On Fonolith.

DJ Katapila
Aroo

Ghana’s DJ Katapila returns to Awesome Tapes From Africa for this EP of funky pan-African party music. In Katapila’s own words, these four tracks follow a simple equation for dancefloor success - “Francophone rhythms plus techno equals hot and danceable”. Amen. The likes of the title track and ‘African Techno’ reap the rewards of his formula.

The Midnight Manual

Five years into Midnight Shift’s time as a label, so it's time for a celebration. The Midnight Manual looks both forwards and back, commemorating the label’s time so far whilst also giving previews of some no-doubt killer EPs due later in the year. Over two 12”s we have a wild array of tracks from the likes of Harmonius Thelonius, Knutsson-Berg and Thermocline.

Night Christ
Conversation Policy / Illum Sphere Remix

Secretive debutant Night Christ has turned in a fabulous single here. On ‘Conversation Policy’ he offers himself to his partner in a Joe Goddard-esque tenor over a ping-ponging synth-pop groove that is equal parts Inga Copeland and Behaviour-era Pet Shop Boys. The flip sees Illum Sphere providing more of an edit than a remix, embellishing the track with splodges of reverb and the occasional extra hi-hat. Out via Dublin’s excellent All City.

TüTH
Transgression

A range of musical and non-musical influences have been poured into this disquieting and hypnotic journey from TüTH, AKA Chicago's Damon Carruesco. Over the course of the tape there's a distinct nod to contemporary electronic styles; it's emotionally sparse, sometimes brutal, and wrapped up in tension.

Perel
Hermetica

Perel's debut album manages to strike the balance between post-punk and disco that only the better artists on DFA's roster manage to. The German producer is a proud fan of Eurythmics and 2 Unlimited and she has the comfort with more poppy melodies you'd expect from one.

Kellen 303
WHB EP

EP on Keysound Recordings from Brooklyn-based newcomer Kellen 303. Five tracks who draw from the frenetic dance traditions of footwork and vogue music, set against the dark aesthetic of goth and industrial. Any producer who can successfully work in the same space as Venus X is worth a spin or two.

zK
Last Night

Swiss tykes Hallow Ground (Dedekind Cut, Goner) make their latest foray into the sonic arts via this six-track from the always-intriguing zK. Last Night is a slippery listen, constantly shifting and never allowing the listener to settle. Numbers like ‘Fugitive II’ see eerie glitches and processed pianos flitting around the headphones in a manner that recalls the spookier elements of Yves Tumor’s sound.

Fahrland
Mixtape Vol. 1

If you left the city that never sleeps because it managed to sneak a gram of ket into Berghain and moved to the countryside what sort of music would you make? Fahrland (aka Geiger) recently made that move and is now producing the sort of lush, funky, and assured electro pop that screams going to bed before midnight.

Meat Beat Manifesto
Impossible Star

Big Beater is watching you!  The world is in a strange, disturbing way these days, but international man of mystery Jack Dangers, Manifesto in hand, is here to weigh in. Meat Beat Manifesto has been going for over three decades now, and these new offerings show Dangers’ long-honed proficiency. His production is thick and uneasy, but the tone of most of these very lively and rich, drawing on all sorts - acid, breakbeat, IDM, lounge, electro, and even snowstorm’d ambient brick walls.

Electric Indigo
5 1 1 5 9 3

female:pressure founder and former Hard Wax employee Electric Indigo has been around for almost three decades now, so it’s quite a surprise that 5 1 1 5 9 3 is her debut LP. She uses all of the tricks she’s picked up over the years to create an album that balances serious electroacoustic compositional chops with the visceral immediacy of IDM and central European techno. If tracks like ‘Ntandathu’ are the sound of the club in full-swing, ‘The Landing’ is what happens after everyone’s gone home. Release on Monolake’s Imbalance Computer Music.

Respuesta Alternativa
Grata Compania

Jesus Ma Catalana (what a name) cut these five tracks as Respuesta Alternativa back in the early 80s. Loading up his synths and drum machines, he got other musicians to solo over the top of them and create this odd record. Weirdo-lounge jazz meets synth-pop, that sort of thing. Weather Report if they were a one-man bedroom project. Reissued by Left Ear Records.

Ismo Laakso
Ofelia

Forgotten in a drawer for twenty years, this bizarre LP by Ismo Laakso at last sees the light of day, courtesy of Puu - sublabel of the revered Sähkö Recordings. These are some off-the-wall lo-fi excursions from the feisty Finn, with industrial and abstract sound design and texture-mangling alongside sacred choral, modern classical and many other kinds of samples. It’s aged well.

Brett Naucke
The Mansion

Brett Naucke continues on the purple patch that saw him drop a few releases in 2017 with his second LP for Editions Mego offshoot Spectrum Spools (Quicksails, Container). It features more of the hyperactive sound-craft that Naucke has become known for over the past few years. Bringing together electroacoustic compositional techniques, day-glo organ tones, found sounds and contemporary classical ideas, Naucke’s bright music is as invigorating and psychotropic as ever before on The Mansion.

Other Lands
Pattern Transform

Oh here we go, here's a colourful thing, one foot in sumptuous tropical island-house, another in quirky downbeat electronica. Richly composed and beautifully groovy, this release is hard to place but none of that really matters to be honest, the vibes are light and shimmering and categorisation can melt away.

Solitary Dancer
In The Name Of The Mother

Optimo call time on their successful Optimo Trax offshoot at the thirty-third release. The EP in question, courtesy of Montreal’s Solitary Dancer, is also one of the more unusual pressings in the series. The three tracks on In The Name Of The Mother are all reverb-fugged edge-of-the-dancefloor numbers that by turns recall The Orb (‘Heroine Dub’), Inga Copeland (‘La Donna’) and Suicideyear (‘Lady Pimp’).

DJ Nigga Fox
Crânio

DJ Nigga Fox continues to forge a brave new world on this latest EP. His first solo release on Warp sees the Principe fellow turning the global clubsphere inside-out, bending rhythms and genres to his will to create body music of unique power. The likes of ‘Poder Do Vento’ reference everyone from Fade To Mind to Buraka Som Systema to DJ Bin Laden.

EMEI
EMEI

Bristol’s Aphelion Editions come through with a hyper-limited sound-sketch by EMEI. Opener ‘Frosted Glass’ sets the tone nicely for EMEI. Beginning with glacial prettiness, the melodies soon distort and overlap to create thick textures that bear comparison to the likes of both Fennesz and Explosions In The Sky. The record is an impressionistic one, with nursery-rhyme melodies, found sounds, screeching drones and more flitting in and out of the mix.

The Modern Institute
The Modern Institute

As I'm too stupid to make head nor tail of the wordy press release but what this appears to be is a "a project which examines the rituals of performance, the signifiers of bourgeois culture and the absurdities inherent in the middle class art gaze". Had a quick listen and yeah it's sound art, basically. Odd spoken word vocals over weird rhythms.

The Skull Eclipses
The Skull Eclipses

This coming-together between Spencer Stephenson (Botany) and Raj Haldar (Lushlife) has produced an intriguing LP. While in aesthetic it skirts close to the stables of Brainfeeder and Liquid Amber, the sonics reference everything from Matthewdavid to The Focus Group. Tracks like ‘Pillars’ are edgy and thrilling hip-hop cuts that benefit from whip-smart guest verses. Laraaji and Open Mike Eagle feature, among others.

Black Meteoric Star
NO MORE WHITE PRESIDENTS

True. It's been a total disaster hasn't it? Black Meteoric Star is the project of Gavin Rayna Russom (LCD Soundsystem/DFA) who has constructed this dark and claustrophobic discotheque exploring themes such as capitalism and death as well as Russom's recently announced trans identity. Tough and jarring club music experiments from an expert in the genre.

Lorenzo Senni & Francesco Fantini
The Challenge

The King of New-New Tranceland aka Lorenzo Senni comes through with something completely different here. Yuri Ancarani’s 2016 film The Challenge was a study in opulence, dealing as it did with the hobbies and pastimes of Qatari sheikhs. Senni and Francesco Fantini’s music for them takes the ideas of Senni’s solo work - slowly-evolving cells of melody, richly evocative chord progressions - and transplants them from modular to orchestra. The record’s packaging - a 10”, housed in gold-embossed inner sleeve, itself nestled in a 32-page photo booklet - is as ostentatious as the film’s subject matter. Limited to 500 copies.

DJ Taye
Still Trippin’

The debut LP from DJ Taye lives up to his billing as one of the leading lights of footwork’s post-Rashad world. Taking cues from his late mentor, Taye’s chops as an MC come in handy across a record that draws as heavily from the world of rap as it does from Chicago’s 160-bpm dance scene. Second track ‘Trippin’’, for example, sees Taye flexing his lyrical muscles with as much speed and dexterity as the drums in his instrumental. Chuck Inglish, DJ Paypal, UNIIQU3 and more guest.

Neil Cowley Trio
Spacebound Tapes

Neil Cowley was inspired by the Sci-Fi of Arthur C Clarke -- particularly his 1956 novel 'The City and the Stars' -- when he grouped his trio together to record their 'Spacebound Apes' LP in 2016. Now, a quartet of top-notch electronic producers have been commissioned to remix a track each from the album, each in their own unique styles. The results, on Spacebound Tapes are even more interstellar than the original tracks. Rival Consoles, Throwing Snow, Christian Loffler and Vessels all bring in the spacey bleeps, pulsing beats and galactic keyboard fun.

Le Millipede
The Sun Has No Money

Alien Ensemble member Matthias Goetz drops the second LP of his Le Millipede project. Though his work in AE sees him sticking to the trombone, there’s a far wider range of instruments being employed across The Sun Has No Money. As well as some Peter Zummo-indebted trombonica (‘Brennelementesteuer’), this album takes in everything from Gallic library music (‘Compost Ghosts’) to parodic twee-pop ala The Notwist (‘Toennchen’) and much more.
