Grebenstein & Seefried
Raging Tender

Downwards offers us up another hard-hitting club 12”: nothing surprising there, but wait, Raging Tender is made up of songs! Grebenstein & Seefried is a producer & vocalist team-up, with dark lyrics delivered with dead eyes over the top of driving minimal Berlin technoid structures. Real club songs for the serious.

Rolando Simmons
Summer Diary One EP

Ok, so it’s the depths of winter here and in Rolando Simmons native Sweden, but that’s not put him off trying to remind us that the sun does occasionally shine. Summer Diary One EP is the producer’s first recording for Analogical Force and is equipped with enough melody and punchy bass grooves to make us feel like it’s summer once again. 5-track 12” EP on Analogical Force.

GILA
Trench Tones

Trench Tonesis the 2019 EP from Denver's Gila (named for the monster with the same name). He has previously been a jazz drummer, something that is detectable in his ease with polyrhythm and syncopation. Otherwise you can expect the bass leaning sounds of Hudson Mohawke and Lunice across this four track EP released by Lex.

Tycho
Weather

San Fran Instagram chillwaver Tycho returns with Weather. A right curveball after such previous titles as Past is Prologue and Epoch, don’t you think? The forecast’s nostalgic with a high chance of soaring pads, analogue warbles, innocuous vocals and officially certified Beautiful Vibes.

Polypores
Flora

Pure analog sweetness from Preston’s Polypores (Stephen James Buckley) here. Flora is one of those British synth LPs in the Ghost Box/Radiophonic Workshop vein. Electronics purr and twinkle as Buckley spins out tender almost-melodies across these ten tracks. If you’re partial to a little Boards Of Canada then you should make haste for Flora.

K Á R Y Y N
THE QUANTA SERIES

K Á R Y Y N (yes I’ve checked, and apparently I do have to write it out like that) presents her debut album to the world. The Quanta Series has been in the works for seven years, in which time our hero has been travelling the world and absorbing inspiration from her Syrian-Armenian-American familial history. The results are remarkably intense and vivid, with very direct electronics amidst an avant-operatic scope. On Mute.

Graham Dunning
Keg / Bulkhead

Graham Dunning puts the turntables to one side for a highly focused release on the Courier label. All sounds on Keg / Bulkhead’s two lengthy tracks are derived from a snare drum, which is activated using a motor and various objects for incessant textural fun. 'Keg' has a jackhammer motor rhythm at its core, while 'Bulkhead' is more of a sheer drone. Cassette release.

Bowditch
Alchemy 4

Alchemy 4 by Bowditch is a series of pieces created for an exhibition in Colchester, Essex. Comprising entirely of sounds found in one particular building, Alchemy 4 is a work that conveys an alienating sense of place. Listen for the way that the sound of fire alarm bells, typically used in an entirely practical purpose, has been turned on its head in an oddly beautiful way.

Diacritical Mark
Lozenges (Regular Strength)

Improvised and recorded partly on an iPad, Diacritical Mark's new experimental piece Lozenges, suggests a reluctant acceptance in engaging with modern culture. It's an interesting dichotomy, then, that this is being released on tape. Although the press release highlights how Lozanges concentrates on the 'futility of trying to cope with regular life experiences', this tape is a wholly engaging and enjoyable listen.

Renick Bell
Turning Points

A set of tracks made by live coding leads to a set of lurching, glitchy electronica. Who’d have thought... Anyway, Renick Bell is one of the best in the business for this sort of thing, and new tape Turning Points demonstrates exactly why. Frenzied IDM, digital MIDI-bap and slamming Szare-like techno all rear their head here in Turning Points' first three tracks alone.

Akkord
HTH035

Reminiscent of Cex or Hrvatski dropping acid, HTH035 features time-warping beats, paranoid pads and an inexplicable catchiness to it all. Akkord is here remixed by Fis and OG Regis, the first leaning more towards the psychedelic electronica, the latter responsible for a slowed and distorted techno-feel.

Monomorph / Brainwaltzera / The Jaffa Kid / SSIEGE / Rawmance

This is a collection of minimal techno singles by the likes of Monomorph (an Italian duo), Brainwaltzera, The Jaffa Kid (up and coming toon producer), SSIEGE (bizarre downtempo electronica), and Rawmance set for release on the 26th of April. For fans of A Guy Called Gerald and Max Graef. On La Beauté du Négatif.

Mythic Tales of Tomorrow II

Wild action from Pakistan, courtesy of Nawksh, who produces video games as well as music. Mythic Tales of Tomorrow II is a super-powerful brew-up of pretty much everything Nawksh enjoys, with new age sounds, messed-up LA-style beats and general abstract sonic explosions all involved. The results are heady. LP release on Guruguru Brain.

Aïsha Devi
S.L.F.

Aïsha Devi’s new release. It got out. The Swiss-born composer of rave-ambiance twistypop returns with a twelve described by the label as “an illuminating hijacking of collective consciousness”. What does that mean, you ask? It means tropes of trap, club, computer boffinry, haze-pop and cyberculture together in a lift.

Various
Scores

As part of their 2018 festival, Dekmantel commissioned four artists to come up with new soundtracks for films from the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and the EYE Filmmuseum. The contributors - Jordan GCZ, upsammy, Parrish Smith and Suzanne Kraft - each turned in intriguing work. Jordan GCZ and upsammy created some dubbed-out and slightly Balearic electronic atmospheres, Kraft turned in a tranquil ambience and Smith ended up on a Nurse With Wound tip. Their compositions are collected on the Scores 12”.

TRjj
Music Compilation: 12 Dances

TRjj like to keep it mysterious and anonymous, hence their lack of individual biographies and the evocative title of their new release: Music Compilation. To be fair, they aren’t wrong. This LP contains twelve tracks of shuffling moods, with sleepy vocals, ticking drum machines, bass rumbles… Simple, but really quite compelling. Out on Stroom.

The Field
The Follower

Kompakt bring us The Field’s The Follower on CD and 180 gram vinyl. This album is six tracks of luscious long-form techno made from his trademark dense loops and beautiful textures. With even more of a kosmische element, this release is the perfect melancholic headphone music to drift off with.

Jung An Tagen
Proxy States

It’s techno, Jim, but not as we know it! The youthful Jung An Tagen returns to Mego with a cassette of “modern composition techniques” squarely aimed at invoking the aesthetic of techno music. With its odd spectral freezing and glistening rhythms, the album will delight lovers of unconventional electronic music and surely make you a big hit at techno parties.

East Man & Walton
Horse Mouth / Gunshot

East Man (Anthoney Hart) kicked off Hi Tek Sounds back in 2018 with his own Stop Flapping Your Gums EP. The label’s second drops sees Hart back in East Man mode and mixing it with Eski-techno specialist Walton. Their collaboration yields expected results - both ‘Horse Mouth’ and ‘Gunshot’ are po-faced soundsystem bangers full of snatched hypeman vocals, ‘Pulse X’ bass beats and rumbling sub.

Rival Consoles
Sonne

Rival Consoles is otherwise known by his non-robot name, Ryan Lee West, a dude with a lot of electronic equipment who makes some truly subversive IDM. His new EP, entitled 'Sonne', contains six original tracks based around analogue synths which act to create his rhythms. West is obsessed with the synthesis of music and colour which makes for a record developing in many different sonic shades: it's best called lush.

Max de Wardener
Palindrome

A two-track EP release preceding an album entitled Kolmar, which will be artist Max de Wardener’s debut effort for Village Green Recordings. First track ‘Palindrome’ is an extended jam aided by the skills of talented drummer Moses Boyd, while on the flip side there’s a techno trip-out entitled ‘Sun Dogs’.

E.R.P. / Duplex
FR-DPX

Split 12" between E.R.P. and Duplex on Frustrated Funk. The a-side features a proper hefty dancefloor weapon from E.R.P., sneaky drums making way for a proper crunchy bass line. On the flip is more spaced out affair from Duplex. All whooshing synths and that. Would make for a decent ambient tune if not for the drums.

Daniel Brandt
Channels

Daniel Brandt (of arpeggio-techno krafters Brandt Brauer Frick) is back for another round of restless, jittery rhythms with Erased Tapes. Channels seems to follow on from last year’s Eternal Something, being of an acoustic-electronic hybrid tapestry of instruments (pianos, brass, bass, strings), synthesisers and prepared objects resulting in animated, melodically rich leftfield dance tunes.

Moby
Play

Moby’s Play is renowned for being the first album ever to totally sell-out, in that every last one of its 18 tracks was licensed for commercial use in ads and films. Given that level of exposure you may know all the tunes here anyway, but in case you want to treat them to a proper listening experience, here is a 2LP reissue on 180g vinyl. On Mute.

Young Marco
Bahasa

Did you know that Young Marco has Indonesian heritage? Us neither. In 2014 the Safe Trip boss travelled to the country at the behest of Island Of The Gods (Black Merlin, Jonny Nash) to explore his roots. While there he made some field recordings that he then brought back to his Amsterdam studio and fused with hypnagogic synthscapes. The result is Bahasa, an LP of dreamy new age ambiences.

Exael
Dioxippe

XPQ? That is the question. It’s also the imprint responsible for a new selection of tracks from Exael a.k.a. Naemi. Recorded in Chicago, some of these have been kicking about since 2014; altogether they cover a lot of ground. ‘rond’ allows a flicker of beats to emerge gradually from a bed of scuzzy noise, ‘untitled’ invokes early tape music trailblazers and ‘cyl reedit’ veers closer to dirty electro. Etc.

DJ Guy
UNTHANK 12

A dive into the expansive vaults of Cardiff producer and artist DJ Guy on the Unthanks imprint. 12” EP UNTHANK 12 selects six off-cut tracks made between 1993 and 1995, and although the  dancefloor is very much in mind, they also evoke the acid-drenched soundscapes that have garnered Guy such a cult following.

Object Collection
You Are Under Our Space Control

The experimental group Object Collection follow up their Fugazi opera with a remarkable suite of wide-ranging homemade modernism. This ‘space-opera’ involves texts by Sun Ra, astronomers and fictional space travellers, as well as sonic allusions to John Cage, sci-fi sound palettes, and avant-electroacoustics. There’s a lot going on in You Are Under Our Space Control, though it also feels eminently personal and within reach. Out on Slip.
