I.A.O.
Phase III: Selected Recordings 1988-1995

Phase III: Selected Recording 1988-1995 collects together recordings by Berlin band I.A.O. The eagle-eyed among will have noticed that for a there was some significant changes in Berlin during the time of these recordings with the fall of the wall making two cities one. This fed into the music with the counterculture from east and west uniting and exchanging ideas. The varied music on offer here are tied together by melancholic overtones, soundscapes and ad-hoc jams creating angular sounds.

Matthew Herbert
The Recording

Matthew Herbert recorded something and guess where he did it? Berlin of course in front of a crowd of very lucky people. He played the whole thing live, got the audience to participated, recorded it and voila, here it is. There's three tracks all especially recorded as part of his residency and showcases perfectly his buoyant, uplifting and sometimes cheeky dance floor.

Mort Garson
Mother Earth's Plantasia

Mort Garson was a pioneer of electronic music in the 1960s and an early user of Robert Moog's synthesizer. 'Plantasia' released in 1976 added warmth to the previously darker and colder melodies of earlier electronic releases. By turn playful, surreal or sinister, this is a diverse collection of sounds from a true innovator.

The Lotus Eaters
Desatura

Please be very very careful. This is not the 1980s Lotus Eaters famous for their 'First Picture of You' single. Instead these are two techno artists Lucy and Rrose. Here the two step away from the usual techno instrumentation and use synthesized sound and feedback to generate both textural and percussive elements to their music.

The Future Sound Of London
Yage 2019

Yage 2019 is an exciting new Record Store Day release from The Future Sound Of London. Veteran fans of the 90’s rave legends will already know the record’s title track given that it first showed up towards the back end of FSoL’s 1996 LP Dead Cities. Here we see the group taking the original and manipulating it into eleven original tracks. Don’t think of Yage 2019 as a remix album - this is very much a record in its own right.

Kraftwerk
Autobahn

This is Kraftwerk’s fourth album, though it’s treated by the band as their year zero, and not entirely without justification. Though retaining “real” instruments like flute, piano, guitar and violin, this marks the start of Kraftwerk as a focused, conceptually defined, electronic entity. The side-long, Beach Boys-inspired title track and the mix of ambient soundscapes and melodic pieces on side two all share an airy, utopian feel. This is the digital remaster on vinyl.

Steven Warwick
Moi

Formerly known as Heatsick, Steven Warwick has decided to go his given name on ‘MOI’, his first LP for PAN in six years. This is one of those sort-of-dancey electronic records that oscillates between silly and serious. Lolina, Planningtorock, A. G. Cook and Holly Herndon can all be heard in the DNA of the quirky, offbeat and engaging ‘MOI’.

The Sleepers

On ever-so-collectible tape label Spun Out of Control is this release from Brighton chanteuse Hattie Cooke. Normally she operates in a singer-songwriter vein but here turns her attention to cinematic and experimental electronica. Released on cassette via Alien Body Music comes this gorgeous collection from London-based producer MALK. Following up on last year’s Death From a Love album, which won the #1 album of 2018 from this very record store, Unrequited ventures even further into the kind of woozy, fuzzy territory that made its predecessor so striking, but retaining the thoughtful, introspective qualities too.

The 4th Wave
Attention Please

Short-lived techno act The 4th Wave may not have lasted for very long, but their legacy of two EPs - 1995’s Touched for Carl Craig’s label Planet E and the following year’s Attention Please for Kirk Degiorgio’s Op-Art imprint - are fondly remembered. Applied Rhythmic Technology has obtained producer Steve Paton’s approval for the re-issue of the second of these releases, mastered from the original tapes and given a bonus fourth track, ‘Lounge Music’.

Mecanica Popular
Estridentismo

Cult industrial / experimental band Mecánica Popular have grown in status in their absence, their acclaimed 1984 album Que Sucede Con El Tiempo being re-issued four years ago and finding a wider audience than ever before. East Man
Eastern Code

Anthoney Hart’s East Man project returns for another EP of his reductionist take on grime. Eastern Code contains four new tracks that boil down the genre to its steely frame, with trace elements of dancehall, techno and drum ‘n’ bass in evidence, and seemingly designed for basements, pirate radio and late night car journeys.

The Wozard Of Iz (Mort Garson)
An Electronic Odyssey

Originally conceived and released by Mort Garson and written by Jacques Wilson back in 1968, The Wozard Of Iz was meant to be a parody soundtrack, setting the characters from the famous movie in the 1960s with a hippie theme to proceedings, but ended up being one of the most beloved cult records of the era. It’s now re-issued by Lasgo on 45rpm vinyl.

Unknown Mobile
Daucile Moon

The result of a broken toe, Daucile Moon is the debut album from Unknown Mobile aka Levi Bruce (the poorly toe guy). He spent his recuperation finding old MIDI files and enlisted guitar ace Mike Silver to add plaintive twiddlings on an album of slow moving beat work and hazy ambience which recalls some of those classic '90s ambient albums.

Scarred For Life

A charity album released on the Castles In Space label and aimed at raising money for Cancer Research, Scarred For Life describes itself enticingly as being inspired by the “traumatising televisual output” of the Seventies and Eighties. Released on CD, it features contributions from the likes of Vic Mars, The Soulless Party and Pulselovers.

Rory St John
Excommunication

Techno done properly will be immersive and full of subtle shifts in sound and mood and this is what Rory St John is aiming towards with his latest release on Voitax. The result is a subtle and introspective take on dub techno with a deep soulful sound at odds perhaps with his earlier more abrasive work. Another string to his production bow, it is full of precise touches that reveal themselves on repeated listens.

Antoni Maiovvi’s Time Precinct
British Interrail

Bristol-based producer Anton Maiof - known better under the name Antoni Maiovvi and now operating with the suffix Time Precinct - returns for his first release on Castles In Space in around four years. Matt Jencik
Dream Character

Judging by the distorted facial image on the front cover of his sophomore solo album, Matt Jencik should probably have titled the record ‘Nightmare Character’. As it is, Dream Character is a disorientating and often unsettling experience, making use of a much wider range of recording techniques than the deliberate simplicity involved in making Weird Times two years ago.

AMA

Not Mama in the words of Phil Collins and pals but MA 'AMA'. Just buy it from us because googling it could be a nightmare. MA comes from Tokyo and started out with (relatively) straightforward beats and hip-hop before turning increasingly noisy and experimental. On this album MA places cut up vocals and field recordings of his voice over unusual futuristic music. Could be interesting.

Hiro Kone
A Fossil Begins To Bray

Most music is defined by what is there, Hiro Kone's has long been defined by what is not. Her electronic sound art is made all the more potent for her ability and willingness to create space, which here serves not only the musical but the political. 'A Fossil Beings To Bray' stands in opposition to excess and in her words, "techno-fascism".

To the layman this means adventures in sound that combines such disparate things as afro-beat, contemporary electronica, techno and Jamaican dancehall. The result is a wildly creative, intoxicating brew of sound.

A kind of arty thing which works just as well in dark underground clubs. Let's hope it gets top bill-ing.

These Craven Faults records have been...um.. faultless in their depiction of West Yorkshire as breeding ground for kraut rock and analogue synth experiments. I've regularly trudged the canal paths with them on my personal stereo. This third (final) instalment sees the project reach the cities where the vegetation gives way to post industrial wastelands and back gardens bedecked with white rose flags. Essential.

FKA twigs
EP1

Think back to 2012, when the remarkable FKA twigs made her debut release. You probably didn’t pick up EP 1 at the time because of it’s highly limited nature, but now you can grab it once more. The slinky four-track EP has been re-pressed to wax by the Young Turks label, and it sounds entirely high-grade. The first steps of a major modern artist.

Alexandre Bazin / Wladyslaw Trejo
Red Ochre / Movida

Polytechnic Youth offer up a hand-stamped, 7” gold vinyl taster for two albums that are scheduled to arrive on the label early doors in 2020, by French experimental artist Alexandre Bazin and Spanish underground maestro Wladyslaw Trejo. ‘Red Ochre’, from Bazin, is a trademark, slow-burning mix of his acoustic and electronic instrumentation, while Trejo’s ‘Movida’ is a much more immediate burst of flaming electro-punk.

Alleluia! Ninja Tune are releasing a 12" of the Soulwax remix of Marie Davidson's 'Work It'. It's one of the best remixes, nay songs, of 2019. Built around Davidson's sardonic vocals, it has one of those weapons-grade grooves that those Belgian boys have mastered. There's also a superb Daniel Avery remix of Davidson's 'Lara', all frenetic 303 basslines and ticking hi-hats. Put it on and turn it up.

Working in the field of live electronic music since the Seventies, American composer Carl Stone has performed all around the world. Following up 2019’s Baroo in extremely short order, Himalaya is a huge double-album experience. All six tracks were conceived of in the last six years, and focus around Southeast Asian field recordings.

Meatraffle
Meatraffle On The Moon

Following the release of their entertainingly titled second album Bastard Music, Delayed Records releases a 12” vinyl of two remixes of Meatraffle’s single ‘Meatraffle On The Moon’. The first is a ‘cosmic re-dub’ from legendary remixer and producer Andrew Weatherall, and the flip sees Delayed Records own founders MixHell having a go at it.

Shigeto
Full Circle

Shigeto's debut full length Full Circle was a lush take on soundtracky instrumental hip-hop jams which saw the producer utilise field recordings to add substance and vibrancy to his work. He recorded everything from meals to monks to outdoor pursuits and added these to his thick gloopy loops. All this was played in by hand creating a living, breathing work that has now been kindly re-issued by Ghostly International so you can discover it for yourself.

Various
Ghostly Swim 2

Compilation from the long-running Ghostly label, with assistance from TV channel Adult Swim. The focus here is on the blurrier, more ambient ends of the Ghostly scale: rhythms remain, but swim comfortably to the back of your mind. All new tracks from the likes of Shigeto, Galcher Lustwerk and Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler.
  • Genre(s):

Andras
Joyful

An otherworldly dance album from Melbourne-based artist Andras - a.k.a. Andrew Wilson. Available at the end of January via the Beats In Space label, Joyful is an exploration of his formative influences as a teenager, and the results are both sentimental and tender yet capable of filling dancefloors.

Daft Punk
Discovery

Discovery was the second album from playful Parisian electronic duo Daft Punk. It marked a shift away from their debut Homework in being more inspired by R&B and disco than the earlier Chicago House influenced sound. It was also around this time the duo became robots shedding their previous human based presentation. The most famous track on the album is probably Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger having been sampled by Kanye West.

Dark Day
Darkest Before Dawn

Dark Day is the ‘80s synth-based project of musician, artist and writer Robin Crutchfield. He began the project in 1979 after leaving no wavers DNA, a group he formed with Arto Lindsay and Ikue Mori. Darkest Before Dawn collects together songs that were recorded between 1985 and 1986. This is the first time the songs have been released on vinyl. They were previously released on CD in 1989.

Deathprod
Morals and Dogma

The early works of Norwegian experimentalist Deathprod (aka Supersilent member Helge Sten) here receive some attention from Smalltown Supersound’s reissues division. Morals And Dogma is a particularly dense Deathprod record, composed over many years using multiple guest musicians in addition to Sten’s electronics rig. Vinyl reissue.

Dominik Eulberg
Diorama

Here we have a repress of Dominik Eulberg’s 2011 album, Diorama. His vision of techno is an organic one that connects with nature rather than something that’s polished and club-ready. With Diorama, the German producer has dedicated each track to an aspect of nature. A long-player certainly worthy of a repress.

The Field
Yesterday and Today

The Field's debut Here We Go Sublime was the kind of record that would be hard to improve on but Axel Willner tries his best anyway with Yesterday and Today - his second full length on Kompakt. It continues his forays into abstract but warmly inviting techno and shows him collaborating with Battles drummer John Stanier and 'covering' the Corgis Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime.

The Field
From Here We Go Sublime

The very first album from The Field, Alex Willner’s minimal-techno-pop project, finds his sound fully developed. Endless repetitions of lush comfortable loops, with that ever-present 4/4 beat holding things together.

Chris & Cosey
Heartbeat

Both previously members of pioneering industrial music legends Throbbing Gristle, Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti teamed up to form Chris & Cosey in 1981 and released a series of acclaimed records. Heartbeat served as their debut album that same year when released via Rough Trade, and it cleaved quite closely to TG’s sound, all harsh dissonance, cut-up samples and cold, dystopian sequences of synth and drum machine. It now gets reissued on purple-coloured vinyl.

Céline Gillain
Bad Woman

Céline Gillain deals in maximal pop, well, a skewiff interpretation of it. It’s experimental pop in the truest sense, one that doesn’t sacrifice any of pop’s sensory appeal while tearing forcefully at the genres seams. The 6-track LP comes out via the Drama label, and is a testament to Gillain’s singular vision.

Lee Gamble
Exhaust EP

As the second part of his "sonic documentary" trilogy, sound artist Lee Gamble presents his 'Exhaust' EP. As a colour-splashed experiment like no other, Birmingham-born Gamble fuses a sprawling selection of hypnotic samples in tracks such as 'Glue' and 'Tyre'. The results are disorientating yet enthralling.

Seefeel
Peel Session

When they signed to Warp Records in 1994, Seefeel became the label's first act who used guitars. Since then Warp have released records by other guitar acts like Grizzly Bear and Maxïmo Park but at the time it was a big decision for both label and band. 'Peel Sessions' is one of ten radio sessions released by Warp to commemorate 30 years of big decisions.

Boards of Canada
Peel Session

Where were you in 1989? Personally, I wasn't born yet, but Warp Records were getting started in the People's Republic of South Yorkshire. One of the acts who helped define the ensuing three decades were Boards of Canada whose 1998 'Peel Session' is one of ten radio sessions being released by Warp to commemorate 30 years at the forefront of music.

Bibio
WXAXRXP Session

30 years just flies by huh! Imagine being 30, I can't. But Warp Records very much can, and to make this very special occasion they're releasing 10 radio sessions by artists they worked with over the decades. 'WXAXRXP Session' was recorded by Bibio during Warp's monster 30 hour birthday radio broadcast.

To those of you who've turned 30, how did you celebrate? Warp Records decided to ruin some poor studio technician's weekend and run a radio broadcast for 30 years solid. They've also released ten radio sessions by artists they've worked with over the years. 'WXAXRXP Session' was recorded by Kelly Moran for that radio show.

WXAXRXP Session

Who among you is brave enough to collect all ten of the radio sessions Warp Records are releasing as part of their thirtieth birthday celebrations? This lovely salmon number is 'WXAXRXP Session' from Mount Kimbie, first heard as part of the truly ludicrous 30 hour radio broadcast they did on that their NTS.

Oneohtrix Point Never
KCRW Session

While touring 'Age Of' Oneohtrix Point Never's stage show reached new excesses. Where previously it was one man and his gear, now he was performing with a full band, some dancers, and two sculptures. For a slightly more stripped down live performance, look to 'KCRW Session' being released by Warp Records as one of ten radio sessions to celebrate 30 years.

Plaid
Peel Session 2

Alongside the likes of the Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, Plaid are one of Warp Records defining bands. Together they spawned the unfortunately named genre IDM, and have gone on to have an influence far wider than their humble Sheffield origins would suggest. 'Peel Session 2' is one of ten radio sessions released by Warp to celebrate the past 30 years.

Flying Lotus
Presents INFINITY “Infinitum” - Maida Vale Session

Flying Lotus 'Presents INFINITY “Infinitum” - Maida Vale Session' is one of ten radio sessions being released by Warp Records on the occasion of their big three-oh. Compared to the rest of the label Flying Lotus is too old to be new guard and too new to be old guard. Nonetheless, his hip hop abstractions are a big reason why Warp is still so relevant.

Waswaas
Antidote

How many Waswaas would a Waswaas if a Waswaas was Waswaas? Perhaps we’ll never know the answer, but what we can say for sure is that ‘Antidote’ sees the mysterious producer pushing The Trilogy Tapes further down the path of electronic idiosyncrasy. Less a techno EP, more a set of synth-led musings that range from John Carpenter (‘Bewitched’) to Daniel Avery (‘Reintegration’).

Laurel Halo
Raw Silk Uncut Wood

Following several EPs on Hippos In Tanks and Honest Jon’s and three albums and two EPs on Hyperdub, Laurel Halo releases her new LP, Raw Silk Uncut Wood on Latency. The Berlin-based American electronic musician was inspired by a score for a Metahaven film and U.S. novelist, Ursula Le Guin’s translation of the 6th-century Chinese text Tao Te Ching. This blurry, contemplative and widescreen soundscape features cello by Oliver Coates and Eli Keszler on percussion.

Qoso
Morning Routine

Will Bankhead continues to select ever more obtuse brands of techno to release via The Trilogy Tapes. This time we get a set of wiggling, airless anti-techno from In Paradisum mainstay Qoso. His ‘Morning Routine’ EP veers close to recent TTT releases from Parris and J. Albert as well as the last few Gobstopper Records drops.

Jay Glass Dubs
Nyx EP

Jay Glass Dubs previous release The Safest Dub had something of the '80s pop about it but for this subsequent 12" he's heading deep into mystical pulse of the likes of African Headcharge blending their deep dark sound with the steady repetition of German kosmische music. Blend in some traditional Greek music and you have another slab of wonder from the boy king. Five tracker on Berceuse Heroique.

Liam Robertson
Village Of Killin

Redstone Press releases a solo 12” EP by Clouds member Liam Robertson, who presents a ruminative and often dark four-track collection. Village of Killin casts its soundscapes in an array of techno, IDM and bass, and has a curious sense of time and place like much of Robertson’s work alongside bandmate Calum Macleod.
