Kenneth James Gibson
The Evening Falls

Kenneth James Gibson must be a busy man, running the Adjunct Audio while also performing in a number of projects, from [a]pendics.shuffle to his Bell Gardens duo with Brian McBride of Stars Of The Lid. This solo joint is a full ambient stretch, slow and beatless and easy to get lost in. The Evening falls is on Kompakt.

Strategy
Information Pollution

Abstract ambience and drone from Paul Dickow’s Strategy project. This alien music is produced from radio static, snippets of battered tapes and distorted field recordings. Information Pollution is an apt title too, as assorted found sounds and ambient recordings overlap and fill the space, like harsh noise for the digital age.

Parallelism
Angular Geometry

Parallelism follows up his self-titled 2015 release with Angular Geometry. This CD on Shimmering Moods is ambient drone full of rich synthesizer and muffled field recordings. The album begins subtly, with barely perceptible tones and murky tape hiss like Kevin Drumm at his quietest. But beneath the surface there are some lovely melodies and even some glitchy rhythms.

Valanx
The Towering Pillars

With Valanx’s The Towering Pillars the Shimmering Moods label continue releasing artists who blur the distinctions of drone and ambient, electronic and acoustic. This CD, with handmade cover, strikes a darker tone than many contemporaries and pushes into dank, industrial zones. The music is dense and downcast; a bleak and often beautiful collection.  v

Bengalfuel
Rapalyea

‘Rapalyea’ is the latest release on Shimmering Moods Records by ambient synthesizer soundscapers Bengalfuel. Conjuring futuristic landscapes of desolate and peaceful majesty over luxurious pads and layer happy production, the record simmers with restraint until the final piece, which culminates in a rage of melodic chaos and mechanical beats.

Breathless
Blue Moon

Tenor Vossa present this gorgeous album of shoegaze and indie-drone, complete with new material, on double vinyl LP or CD. Blue Moon is from 1999 and the middle of Breathless’ career. Here Dominic Appleton’s powerful and melancholy vocals dominate their dream-pop sound, but the unusual instrumentation and bubbling drones provide the perfect foundation.

Moby
Hotel Ambient

Hotel Ambient by Moby was originally released as bonus disc on the limited edition version of his 2005 album Hotel. This version has been expanded to include extra tracks and fully remastered. Hotel Ambient contains some of Moby’s best ambient material - music you can really get lost in. The album showcases Moby’s influences from modern classical pioneers such as Phillip Glass and Steve Reich and the godfather of ambient music, Brian Eno to the revolutionary Detroit techno of Derrick May and the IDM found on the Warp label’s roster in its early days.

Static Waves Volume 4

Saint Marie Records present their fourth annual Static Waves compilation to date, again pooling an impressive quantity of material only from the label’s roster. Most of the 33 tracks here are previously unreleased, so fans of artists like Static Daydream, Bloody Knives and Orange will want to dig into this 3-disc box set, especially at such a bargain price!

Ocoeur
Reversed

Franck Zaragoza steps out under his Ocoeur moniker for a fourth full-length exploration of the melancholy possibilities of solo piano compositions. I say solo piano: some delicate string arrangements also curl themselves around the edges of Reversed. Released by n5MD on both CD and grey / white vinyl formats.

Limited Liability Sounds
Surrounding Countryside

Limited Liability Sounds present a slab of gorgeous ambience reportedly inspired by the nature writings of Henry David Thoreau. Just as his Walden rejects the modern world’s stresses and strains for the wilderness, so does Surrounding Countryside hide away in cushioning walls of drone ambience. Edition of 50 CDs on Shimmering Moods.

Mike Cooper
New Kiribati

First released in 1999, here is the first installment in Mike Cooper’s intriguing journey away from songcraft and towards ‘Ambient Exotica Soundscapes’: intriguing and atmospheric little soundworlds made with… well, all sorts. This reissue on Discrepant is the first ever appearance on vinyl for these remarkable recordings, where they clearly belong.

Ocean Floor
Jupiter

Originally released on cassette (uber limited to only 33 copies) label ZamZam Records, Ocean Floor has taken it upon himself to re-release Jupiter on vinyl. 10 tracks of organs and synths mappping a stargazing journey, think of a lo-fi Gustav Holst without the grandeur - it’s ultimately quite charming.

CHVE
RASA

CHVE is the solo project of Colin H. Van Eeckhout, the frontman of Amenra. For RASA he restricts himself to using only voice and hurdy-gurdy: a bold move and immense restriction, but one that has firmly paid off. Thick drones are coaxed from his instrument, and processed into cavernous sonic chambers. Released by Consouling Sounds.

Ed Tullett
Fiance

At just twenty-two, Ed Tullett has already garnered plenty of acclaim and here he delivers his debut LP, Fiancé, to show that the acclaim was deserved. Fiancé moves through genres with aspects of R&B moving into drifting dream pop. It straddles the divide between electronic and folk with ease and seems both intimate and epic within the same song. CD or 180g vinyl LP limited to 400 copies with black and white splatter vinyl. Vinyl comes with printed inner sleeve and CD.

Arkadelphia
Islands of Mind

Travel deep with Arkadelphia, who has a weighty collection of ambience and occasional leftfield techno for you to dig into. As the release stretches over 4 hours and 34 tracks, it makes sense that Islands of Mind is being released on USB stick full of FLAC files (download codes included for other formats) in a ‘special’ brown paper bag. 50 copies only!

We Mythical Kings
Visitations

We Mythical Kings is made up of Raz Ullah and Peter Phillipson. Visitations is their debut album - a result of controlled and structured improvisations on guitar synthesizers and a huge array of hacked effects. Recorded over a six day period, whilst locked away in a small cottage on the Isle of Mull and then collated later the album swings from abstract drones and pops to lush guitar picks and lofi driving rhythm boxes.

Wolves and Horses
Every Moment Of Light And Dark

Belgian ambience from Wolves and Horses, aka Christian Saint-Viteux. The tracks that make up Every Moment Of Light And Dark were apparently composed with imaginary short films in mind, and are suitably cinematic as a result. Slow-moving atmospheres, as you’d expect, buoyed occasionally by emotive touches of piano. CD on UAE Records.

Ensemble Economique

Ensemble Economique (the ensemble is in fact so economical that it contains only one member, Brian Pyle) release their / his eleventh album. Blossoms In Red has that shimmering ambient-songcraft vibe Pyle excels at, carefully placing subtle pieces of instrumentation next to each other. Guest appearance from Peter Broderick!

Loscil
Plume

Scott Morgan’s fourth Loscil album Plume took a different approach to previous efforts, using harmonic roots as a platform for live improvisation in the studio, with editing kept to a minimum. The ambient drone/electronica that Morgan deals in swells and recedes slowly throughout and proves itself adaptable to change.

The Balustrade Ensemble
Renewed Brilliance

The Balustrade Ensemble make an odd music, a kind of free-floating ambience with lashings of uncanny new age-ness. The Ensemble has plenty of instruments and even more production techniques at their fingertips, so that Renewed Brilliance perfectly conveys its very specific sound. Quite compelling. Out on Serein.

The Sinclar Sinclair
Breaking the Waves

Second EP from mystical Estonian alt-pop band The Sinclair Sinclair. The tracks of Breaking the Waves tend to build the rhythm section up around an electronic core, while vocalist Keit Kukk (singing in English) draws her singing straight from the history of ethereal vocalists. Released by the Beautiful Strange label.

An interesting project here: contemporary artists pay curious tribute to World War Two era German -> Australian refugee musicians, who were effectively silenced by immigration authorities. Inventions is a still relatively new duo made up of alumni of Eluvium and Explosions In The Sky. Rodinia
Drumside / Dreamside

Rodinia have put together a wonderful rhythm-fest here for this LP. The two members started off with a jam on a stack of synth equipment, and later on added drums and other instruments. It feels like every aspect of the sound-field is in some way rhythmic, yet also a little ambient in texture. Drumside / Dreamside is released by now Again.

T.Raumschmiere
T.Raumschmiere

T.Raumschmiere is the project of Marco Haas, label boss of the Shitkatapult imprint. This self-titled album is the first in 7 years, and although the press release ties itself in knots over whether or not this is ambient music, to my ears it sounds like industrially-tinged dark synth-simmer, with some vocal tracks. Has a strong atmosphere though. On Album Label.

Christopher Bissonnette
Pitch, Paper & Foil

Chris Walla
Tape Loops

You don’t expect an album named Tape Loops to come from a former member of Death Cab For Cutie, but here it is! Chris Walla, who founded that band, has taken things a lot more abstract: not quite full Lescalleet / Dilloway, but a pretty strong set of pieces that use analogue technology with skill.
