Portishead
Portishead

Essential Bristolian soundtracky trip-hoppers second LP from back in 1997.  This is the one that eschewed their debut's occasional pop moves and delved deep into sample-delica and disturbing textures. It's an intimate and occasionally frightening listen full of regret and pathos between the grooves.

Massive Attack
Heligoland

This was the fifth album from the masters of trip hop and as usual contains an array of guests including Horace Andy (natch), Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval and..well...  Guy Garvey. You can't get all your decisions correct I suppose but this is an overlooked album by these experts of dark beats and now has been re-issued on double LP.

Air
Talkie Walkie

Rhino Records are in the midst of a campaign of reissuing the discography of Air, the smooth, loungey French synth-charmers. Talkie Walkie first came out in 2004, and is suitably Airy - and I don’t just say that because of the pun, this album feels like an early summer evening in the park with a light breeze. Pressed to proper 180g vinyl and freshly remastered.

Air
10,000 Hz Legend

Rhino Records are in the midst of a campaign of reissuing the discography of Air, the smooth, loungey French synth-charmers. 10,000 Hz Legend found the group stretching out their tracks into territories more experimental than their previous LP Moon Safari. Includes the robot-voice single ‘How Does It Make You Feel’. Pressed to proper 180g vinyl and freshly remastered.

Global Communication
76:14

Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton first started making music together in 1991 and have made a variety of styles of electronic music under several different names such as Reload, Jedi Knights, Link and Chameleon. They recorded their ambient /  house masterwork 76:14 as Global Communication in 1994. Highly regarded and welcomingly reissued on Music On Vinyl.

Eno
Another Green World

Another Green World is Brian Eno's third solo album and marks the beginning of his move from rock-based compositions to the ambient work he pursued in the late '70s. It contains some of his best known tracks such as St Elmo's Fire and the beautiful title track and is notable for guest spots from Robert Fripp, John Cale and Phil Collins.

Massive Attack
Blue Lines

Ah 'Blue Lines'. That time hip-hop, reggae, R&B, and soul all together under the mysterious cinematic umbrella of Massive Attack. The first time their special blend of breakbeats, sampling and rapping was heard and it's presence is still being felt 25+ years on. The usual guests are in place, Horace Andy, Tricky, Neneh Cherry and of course Shara Nelson on the stone cold classic 'Unfinished Sympathy'.

The Field
From Here We Go Sublime

The very first album from The Field, Alex Willner’s minimal-techno-pop project, finds his sound fully developed. Endless repetitions of lush comfortable loops, with that ever-present 4/4 beat holding things together.

Massive Attack
Protection

Protection was the second album by Bristol’s trip-hop overlords Massive Attack. The album was released in 1994. Vocalist Shara Nelson was replaced by Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn. Tricky also made his last appearance with the the group going on to make his Maxinquaye album. It features the single Karmacoma.

Massive Attack
Mezzanine

Mezzanine is a dark masterpiece, as black, as glossy and as intimidating as the beetle creature on its cover. Angel and Teardrop turn up on TV often enough (and rightly so), but the whole album is worth digging into for its uneasy moods. This hasn’t been available on record for a while, so Universal are bringing it back on suitably heavyweight vinyl.

Nightmares On Wax
Thought So...

Chillout with the misleadingly named Nightmares On Wax, whose days on Warp continue with a lovely reisuse of 'Thought So...', his sixth record, which saw them pack up shop and move to Ibiza (from Leeds, no less!). There's plenty of good old fashioned dub to rejoice over, but things get a little sunnier and shinier on this record.

Stars Of The Lid
Avec Laudenum

Kranky have reissued a few of Stars Of The Lid’s records recently, one of which is the duo’s 1999 LP Avec Laudenum. As is usually the case with the Texan duo’s music, their fifth full-length is full of glacial post-minimalist ambient compositions. Three-part opus ‘The Atomium’ is slow and sonorous while ‘Dust Breeding (1.316)+’ and ‘I Will Surround You’ maintain the grainy quality of Stars Of The Lid’s Jon McCafferty collaborations. Another quiet triumph.

The Orb
Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld

Sheesh! The Orb's legendary debut LP gets a 4LP re-issue to mark its 25th anniversary. An odyssey of ambient and dance the record has many stand outs such as 'Little Fluffy Clouds' making it one of the few places where psych and dance properly collide. Comes in the original artwork. I'm not sure if there are bonus tracks as it doesn't say.

The Orb
U.F.Orb

U.F.Orb was considered as a prog rock album by journalists at the time of its release in 1992. Now, The Orb’s second long-player is rightly regarded as a classic of the ambient genre. Alex Patterson’s ability to channel Eno-eque sounds and take them into a new musical era was strengthened by Kris Weston’s creativity and technical ability. U.F.Orb features guest appearances from Jah Wobble on Bass and Steve Hillage on guitar.

Portishead
Third

Portishead have kept a low profile in the nine years since Third was released. Will they ever release another album? If not, the savage trip-hop trailblazers certainly ended with something special. Reinterpreting all sorts from krautrock to folk song, the album’s menacing unease still haunts today. No wonder an entire town was named after them!

Eluvium
Copia

One of the finest artists in the neo-classical genre is of course Richard Clayderman...no sorry Eluvium. Read the review for the full office misunderstanding that seems barely plausible with music of such beauty. Eluvium has made lots of gorgeous records but Copia is possibly one of the best, broadening his brush strokes to include strings, brass and of course piano. Now remastered onto 2LP by Temporary Residence.

M83
Digital Shades Vol.1

The first in M83’s ongoing ambient series Digital Shades, founding member Anthony Gonzales explores a world of M83 songs, but without those pummeling drums. Volume 1 focuses on Brian Eno-esque drifting pianos and synthesizers, but claims more of your attention than, for example, Music for Airports.

The Cinematic Orchestra
Ma Fleur

The Cinematic Orchestra’s 2007 LP Ma Fleur is the one that’s turned them into the big-boy act we all know today. Opener ‘To Build A Home’, for instance, gets played any time someone in a BBC drama needs to emote and Sigur Rós’ ‘Hoppípolla’ isn’t at hand. A lot of the tracks on Ma Fleur do that thing where they blend electronic and acoustic instruments. It’s as if Lemon Jelly never happened.

Deathprod
Morals and Dogma

The early works of Norwegian experimentalist Deathprod (aka Supersilent member Helge Sten) here receive some attention from Smalltown Supersound’s reissues division. Morals And Dogma is a particularly dense Deathprod record, composed over many years using multiple guest musicians in addition to Sten’s electronics rig. Vinyl reissue.

Sol Seppy
The Bells Of 1 2

Sol Seppy is Sophie Michalitsianos - an English singer/songwriter who grew up in Australia before moving to the states. She contributed to the Sparklehorse albums It’s A Wonderful Life and Good Morning Spider. The Bells of 1 2 is her debut album, originally released in 2006. The influence of Sparklehorse on the album is clear. Comparisons have also been made with Mazzy Star and Cocteau Twins.

Nightmares On Wax
Smokers Delight

The Nightmares on Wax re-issue campaign wouldn't be complete without this, their most well known and well regarded album. As our customer reviewer Andrew righty points out, this was the album they went from bleep to bong and is full of classic mid 90's style laid-back smoky grooves.

Loscil
Submers

Issued on vinyl for the very first time on Kranky, Submers is the second studio album by ambient artist Scott Morgan, recording under the name Loscil. All of its tracks are named after submarines, and the mood, constructed largely from samples, is one of ominous moods, clangorous rhythms and claustrophobia.

Nightmares On Wax
Carboot Soul

Nightmares On Wax provided the constant chill vibes for Warp Records back in the day, and 'Carboot Soul' kept a steady hand on proceedings, melding together trip-hop sounds with the same old jazz affections and haze of 'Smoker's Delight'. It's being reissued with all its siblings as part of the N.O.W. Is The Time Campaign, which will hopefully immortalise this smooth type of easy listening.

Brian Eno
Music For Films

The Bonce himself gets his 1978 LP Music For Films reissued. This is, y’know, one of those Brian Eno albums. Sure, it’s a bit of an odds-and-sods collection; yes, the tracks here are quite short when compared to the long-form half-music of something like Music For Airports; OK, it’s not that similar to what he was doing with Talking Heads at the same time. But this is still an album by Brian Eno. You know what you’re in for, and what you’re in for is nice cloud music.

Bonobo
Animal Magic

Whether or not he intentionally referenced Johnny Morris and Terry Nutkins long running BBC Children's Television show, Animal Magic is worth a place in the annals of cultural history by being the first album from beat-maker Simon Green (aka Bonobo). He has increasingly gained a large following and is one of downtempo electronic music's biggest draws but here is where everything started...re-issued by the good people at Tru Thoughts.
