Yasuaki Shimizu
Kakashi

Another welcome reissue of Yasuaki Shimizu’s work, hot off the heels of his Music for Commercials on Crammed Discs. With fewer commission-related restrictions, his work here is more elaborate and immersed in playful fusion - if you didn’t know that he was on that Mariah album Utakata No Hibi (reissued to great acclaim in 2015) before, it’ll be obvious now. The ultra-crunchy bass and elegant sax are especially noteworthy here. And what a lovely cat!

Willits + Sakamoto
Ancient Future

Like fish and chips, cheese and tomato, sausages and mash, pianist Christopher Willits and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto seem born to go together. Ancient Future was their second collaboration and is a six track song cycle made up of tracks Sakamoto sent to Willits as embryonic piano sketches. The theme is the acceptance of one's fate and the lessons we can learn from life. Big questions but soundtracked exquisitely by these masters of their genres.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Massive Attack
The Spoils

Two massive tracks from Massive Attack. The Spoils is a soft and string filled ballad that gets under the skin, featuring the haunting vocals of Hope Sandoval. And on the flip side Ghost Poet channels Spaceape over a lunging bass driven half time track with a pluck string melody. Presented on coloured vinyl and in stunningly printed sleeves.

Brian Eno
Music For Films

The Bonce himself gets his 1978 LP Music For Films reissued. This is, y’know, one of those Brian Eno albums. Sure, it’s a bit of an odds-and-sods collection; yes, the tracks here are quite short when compared to the long-form half-music of something like Music For Airports; OK, it’s not that similar to what he was doing with Talking Heads at the same time. But this is still an album by Brian Eno. You know what you’re in for, and what you’re in for is nice cloud music.

Thousands of Eyes in the Dark

Unknown Mobile
Daucile Moon

The result of a broken toe, Daucile Moon is the debut album from Unknown Mobile aka Levi Bruce (the poorly toe guy). He spent his recuperation finding old MIDI files and enlisted guitar ace Mike Silver to add plaintive twiddlings on an album of slow moving beat work and hazy ambience which recalls some of those classic '90s ambient albums.

Matt Jencik
Dream Character

Judging by the distorted facial image on the front cover of his sophomore solo album, Matt Jencik should probably have titled the record ‘Nightmare Character’. As it is, Dream Character is a disorientating and often unsettling experience, making use of a much wider range of recording techniques than the deliberate simplicity involved in making Weird Times two years ago.

Suzanne Menzel
Goodbyes and Beginnings

1981 synth-pop from Denmark, in the form of the one and only album by Suzanne Menzel, self-released at the time and hard to find since then. Klaus Schonning contributes new agey electronic backing to Menzel’s vocal melancholia, creating quite folky results. Goodbyes and Beginnings is here reissued by Frederiksberg Records.

Sam Mallet
Wetlands

Late film score composer Sam Mallet made music that took pointers from a wide range of influences: Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, John Coltrane and Jon Hassell to name a few. He made soundtracks that straddled the worlds of ambient, jazz and rock that accompanied TV series, short films and even experimental video art. Wetlands is the result of a thorough dig into Mallet’s archive by Rowan Mason (Sanpo Disco/Recurring Dream) and Tony Remple (Musique Plastique).

Cass. & Gianni Brezzo
Masala Kiss

German twosome Cass. & Gianni Brezzo present their latest album Masala Kiss, on Hamburg-based label Growing Bin. Rendered in soft focus like all the best classic electronica (think Tangerine Dream to Music Has The Right To Children…), the duo are at their most playful and emotionally expressive here.
  • Genre(s):

Jim O'Rourke
To Magnetize Money And Catch A Roving Eye

What is he up to now? Sonic explorer and wearer of experimental music's best set of cardigans Jim O'Rourke. An internet search reveals absolutely no information about this other than it is a four CD set containing four hours of unreleased work. Essential for all fans of his more out there work it showcases what he's been up to in his lair between the years of 2017 and 2018.

Arp

Alexis Georgopoulos, better known by his stage name Arp, delivers a new 12” EP for the Mexican Summer label. Astatine
Global Exposure

Stéphane Recrosio aka Astatine is the wild man of the Paris lo-fi scene releasing scores of lathe cut singles and limited releases onto the world. It's nice that Sound in Silence are bringing his work to a wider audience as his shambling distorted lo-fi needs to be heard by the type of ears who worship at the altar of Guided By Voices, Sebadoh/Sebtridoh and particularly the early Hood lo-fi experiments.

Star Searchers
Avatar Blue

How far could you swim in two hours? I could do about 25 metres I reckon on a good day and with the wind behind. This 2CD from former the Skaters member Spencer Clark as Star Searchers features two hours of music made to represent the swimming patterns of aquatic life. It also serves as a soundtrack to an speculated imagining of how James Cameron's forthcoming Avatar 2 might be soundtracked. Ocean-based new aged synth wanderings for bath time.

Nils Frahm
Encores 2

La la la, plink plonk plink, some new Nils Frahm here to make you think. The Pianist For All Millennials drops the second of his Encore EPs via Erased Tapes. This one kind of sounds like a more highfalutin take on Vangelis’s score for Blade Runner. Encores 2 is definitely music, and when all things are considered that’s probably a good thing.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Hammock
Silencia

Silencia is the final part of a trilogy of albums by Hammock. The Nashville post-rock /  ambient duo say that the arc of the trilogy, which also includes the albums, Mysterium and Universalis, takes inspiration from the music of Arvo Part and Georgy Sviridov and the writing of American poet Li Young Li. Their work finds healing in silence, and that’s what Hammock have done here. The duo’s guitars are backed by droning horns, strings and the 20-strong Budapest Art Choir.

Steve Hauschildt
Nonlin

Steve Hauschildt has been long admired in these parts, firstly for his work with experimental electronic trio Emeralds and then as a solo artist with classic albums such as Where All Is Fled and Strands. His new album, Nonlin, is his sixth and sees him evolve yet further. Another classic? We shall see, but the chances are good.

Mathieu Serruys
Skin/Glove

Recorded painstakingly over a five year period following the release of his acclaimed 2014 debut album, Skin/Glove sees the long-awaited return of Belgian musician Mathieu Serruys. The new work is incredibly emotionally dense, offset by the distance suggested by the coldness and occasional harshness of the music.

Don't Go Wasting Time

A second 10” vinyl EP in 2019 alone from 16 year old Bedfordshire singer-songwriter Alfie Templeman, following the great reception for Sunday Morning Cereal a few months back, which included airplay on BBC Radio 1 and Radio X. Portishead
Dummy

Island is reissuing Portishead's seminal trip-hop album, 'Dummy'. Originally released in 1994, their first record is a collection of dark and sonorous electronic tunes inspired by rock music , jazz and hip-hop alike. 'Dummy' helped synthesize a new sound that became essential to the Bristol scene, coinciding with bands such as Massive Attack to put West Country trip-hop on the map. It also garnered a few hits, including "Numb".

Giulio Aldinucci
No Eye Has An Equal

Siena-based composer Giulio Aldinucci has been an expert in creating impressionistic electro-acoustic masterworks for almost two decades at this point. Now comes his latest album, No Eye Has An Equal, consisting of four long-form tracks that will appeal to fans of drone music, ambient music and post-rock in equal measure.

Bersarin Quartett
Methoden und Maschinen

Bersarin Quartett is the ambient project of German DJ, sound designer and musician Thomas Bücker. Methoden und Maschinen is the fourth album by the project. It seems Bücker has allowed influences from Andy Stott, Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Murcof, Dictaphone and Hidden Orchestra with whom Bersarin Quartett has played with in recent years. This, of course, is no bad thing.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Ambienti Coassiali
Dream Rooms

Dreams Rooms by veteran Italian music project Ambienti Coassiali is a series of infinite guitar guitar loops. The sound creates an atmosphere that develops over time making it an entirely immersive and enveloping experience. For the guitar nerds out there, the music is made using an early ‘70s EKO ranger guitar.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Deathprod
Morals and Dogma

The early works of Norwegian experimentalist Deathprod (aka Supersilent member Helge Sten) here receive some attention from Smalltown Supersound’s reissues division. Morals And Dogma is a particularly dense Deathprod record, composed over many years using multiple guest musicians in addition to Sten’s electronics rig. Vinyl reissue.

The Field
From Here We Go Sublime

The very first album from The Field, Alex Willner’s minimal-techno-pop project, finds his sound fully developed. Endless repetitions of lush comfortable loops, with that ever-present 4/4 beat holding things together.

Benoît Pioulard
Sylva

I'm worried on seeing Benoît Pioulard described in the press release as a 'veteran'. It seems he's only just got started. The Seattle native has always been one for a concept and this album sees him complement a linen book of Polaroid SX70 photographs with new music which is mostly instrumental but contains two stand out vocal pieces. His music is always beautifully immersive and we have no doubt this will be no different.
  • Genre(s):

Slow Meadow
Happy Occident

Happy Occident is the third album by Slow Meadow - the solo project of Texan, Matt Hill. It is an album of mournful ambient chamber music. Hill’s inspiration for making the album came about when contemplating what is means to be happy in the western world. Does the meaning of the word live up to what we expect from happiness? Put this on and have a good think about it. Violinist Ellen Story guests.

Mont Analogue is a 1950s French fantasy novel. It is also the name of this rather splendid ambient / psychedelic / krautrock band featuring Alex Van Pelt (not the American Football coach) and Ben Lupus. Allow Super Flumina Babyloni to escort you on some dreamy, trance-like travels. Features guest performance from New Age musician Ariel Kalma.

Seefeel
Peel Session

When they signed to Warp Records in 1994, Seefeel became the label's first act who used guitars. Since then Warp have released records by other guitar acts like Grizzly Bear and Maxïmo Park but at the time it was a big decision for both label and band. 'Peel Sessions' is one of ten radio sessions released by Warp to commemorate 30 years of big decisions.

Massive Attack
Massive Attack vs Mad Professor Part II (Mezzanine Remix Tapes ’98)

The union of Massive ‘Robert Isn’t Banksy, Honest’ Attack and Mad Professor has borne fruit before - the latter’s No Protection remix LP is beloved by fans of both parties - and they repeat the trick with these new Mezzanine dubs. Whether or not these were done around Mezzanine’s 1998 LP or more recently, all of the material on Mezzanine Remix Tapes ‘98 is previously unreleased. No Vacation
Phasing

No Vacation began life in San Francisco before moving to hip Brooklyn where they now reside. They play woozy indie pop and dream pop which nods in the direction of surf rock and shoegaze. Phasing is the band’s new EP and the first where the songwriting was a collaborative effort. It makes for a more dynamic sound from the band.

Jónsi & Alex Somers
Riceboy Sleeps (2019 Analogue Remaster)

Jonsi and Alex Somers don't just play together, they work together... or they did once on the Riceboy Sleeps album, originally released in 2009 but now available on posh triple vinyl with rounded corners and now including the All Animals EP. This is gorgeous ambience of the highest order which will appeal to people who like Sigur Ros but also to people (me) who don't like Sigur Ros but know good atmospheric downtempo electronics when they hear it. Nurse With Wound
Soliloquy For Lilith

Those kind folks at Dirter have re-issued Nurse With Wound's classic 1988-era ambient opus Soliloquy For Lilith complete with 40 minutes of unreleased tracks from the same session. it's hard to overstate the importance of this album in the ambient field. It was way ahead of its time in producing atmospheric ambient music and was even a chart topper in the ambient field back in the day.

Nightmares On Wax
Carboot Soul

Nightmares On Wax provided the constant chill vibes for Warp Records back in the day, and 'Carboot Soul' kept a steady hand on proceedings, melding together trip-hop sounds with the same old jazz affections and haze of 'Smoker's Delight'. It's being reissued with all its siblings as part of the N.O.W. Is The Time Campaign, which will hopefully immortalise this smooth type of easy listening.

Goldmund
Sometimes

Goldmund, aka Keith Kenniff has apparently had great success squeezing his music into films and adverts and such, which makes sense in some ways: he writes very elegant, dramatic piano music. But also, most of Sometimes is just as dark as the sleeve art suggests: I can’t imagine many of these tracks making me want to buy any lifestyle accessories. On Western Vinyl.

Cosey Fanni Tutti
Time To Tell

A founding member of Throbbing Gristle as well as one half of Chris and Cosey, Cosey Fanni Tutti is a born collaborator, working through countless mediums with an ever growing list of artists. Steve Roach
Quiet Music 3

American ambient / electronic / new age composer Steve Roach recorded three albums based around synths, flute and electric piano known as Quiet Music between 1983 and 1986. Originally released on cassette in 1986, this is the first time it has appeared on vinyl.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Steve Roach
Quiet Music 2

Quiet Music 2 is the second in a series of albums recorded by American New Age composer Steve Roach. They were recorded between 1983 and 1986 and originally released on cassette in 1986. • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Steve Roach
Quiet Music 1

Quiet Music 1 is the first in a series of albums recorded by Steve Roach between 1983 and 1986. The recordings are made up of soft sounds from synth, electric piano, flute and the sounds of nature. Hior Chronik
Blind Heaven

Blind Heaven by Greek-born, Berlin-based composer and musician Hior Chronik is an album of soundscapes that incorporate elements of drone, neo-classical and ambient music. Massive Attack
Mezzanine

Mezzanine is a dark masterpiece, as black, as glossy and as intimidating as the beetle creature on its cover. Angel and Teardrop turn up on TV often enough (and rightly so), but the whole album is worth digging into for its uneasy moods. This hasn’t been available on record for a while, so Universal are bringing it back on suitably heavyweight vinyl.

Demdike Stare duo Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty have been helping have a clear out and have discovered another batch of compositions from the '80s and '90s. This is a treasure trove of lost synth compositions reminiscent of everything from Vangelis, Boards of Canada and Deathprod. Dig in.

Rich Ruth
Calming Signals

Calming Signals is an ambient record with additional emotional catharsis. (Michael) Rich Ruth has played in a number of bands, but has also been making ambient music in his own time. Ruth was carjacked during the recording of the album. This meant the album became a way of him changing a horrible experience into something positive.

Hatchie
Keepsake

Hatchie is the stage name of Brisbane songwriter Harriette Pilbeam so you can sort of see why she's not using her birth name for this project. This is her debut album after an earlier well received EP. She uses a varied sonic palette with synthpop, ethereal guitars, industrial textures and new wave all featuring leading to a powerful sound that is already gaining her lots of plaudits.

Paniyolo + Akio Watanabe

Joanna Brouk
The Space Between

Forget the space between, it’s just space that Joanna Brouk’s second album from 1980 has been crying out for, only ever being released on cassette. Now, the 'The Space Between' has room to breathe, being spread over four sides of vinyl, thanks to Numero Group. Brouk, an American electronic musician studied under composer Robert Ashley and famed minimalist composer Terry Riley. She released five albums in her career before giving up music in 1986 to have a family and practice transcendental meditation.

Marconi Union
Dead Air

Past collaborators with likes of Jah Wobble and Max Richter, Manchester’s Marconi Union have enjoyed a long and fruitful career since forming almost two decades ago. For their tenth album, the trio have dispensed with beats and guest spots, opting for a more impressionistic sound on the beautiful Dead Air.

An Explore

The functionally titled 1 from duo An Explore brings together two incredibly talented musicians from the British avant-garde scene - Rob Macdonald (founder of the Scratch nightclub, and part of Speeka, Jumbonics and Gum Drop) and Lucy Wilkins (touring and recording violinist). This thoughtful EP is available on both CD and 10” vinyl.

Karma Moffett
Sitting Still Within / Sitting Still Without

Sitting Still Within / Sitting Still Without by Karma Moffet was originally released in 1982. The album was at the forefront of the growing New Age movement in the early ‘80s. Ian Hawgood + Phil Tomsett
Fragmented Boundaries

Fragmented Boundaries is not your usual Home Normal release. It does feature label owner Ian Hawgood along with his pal Phil Tomsett, but rather than the usual blissful ambience it is an album filled with random bursts of noise and melodic passages. It’s fragments of this and that pieced together. It perhaps reaches further than previous releases and its journey, whilst highly enjoyable, is a little more wild.

J Colleran
EP01

Producer J Colleran launches his new label venture Oyae with the release of his own new five-track EP, available on 12” vinyl. Anyone who saw him this summer on the festival circuit will know the kind of thing contained on EP01 - slippery, mutating and frenetic modern dance music rubbing up against glacial ambience.

Yuk
Paraiso EP

Not content with being a restaurateur and a rather good chef, Chad Valencia also makes music as Yuk. Paraiso EP is released via Leaving Records and is showing L.A. how lo-fi ambient records should be made. Paraiso EP is part one of a two-part series If you like Boards Of Canada, Teebs, Flying Lotus and Madlib you should check this out.

Seahawks & WOO
Celestial Railroads

This is an interesting collaboration where transcendental psychedelic types Seahawks rework the music of gloriously hushed turn of the 80s duo Woo. There are two completely contrasting styles at work here so it will be interesting to see how this works. The press release suggests something like Spacemen 3 reworking the KLF. At least it's not the SeaHORSES and Woo collaborating as I originally (mis)read.

Dan Armstrong
A Long Time Coming

Do you like to chill? Do too many drums put you on edge? Do you enjoy Biosphere, William Orbit and all the sort of stuff? If you said yes to any of those questions then Dan Armstrong’s A Long Time Coming is very much the record for you. To be honest, even if you didn’t answer in the affirmative this LP of tranquil downtempo ambient compositions is still well worth your time.

Jason Lytle
Arthur King Presents Jason Lytle: NYLONANDJUNO

The latest album in the King Arthur presents series sees Grandaddy mainman Jason Lyttle getting experimental. NYLONANDJUNO was recorded for the LA collective by Lyttle alone using an analog synth and a nylon strung guitar. He took his inspiration for making the music from the song titles he’d already come up with.

Ummagma
Compass

Electronically-enhanced rock duo Ummagma return with their first album in seven years, and their first to ever be released on vinyl. With the long wait explained by the years it took them to move from Russia to Canada, Compass is the album that most accurately reflects the band’s post-genre approach.

Bowery Electric
Beat

Finally available on vinyl pressing after a 20 year wait (to the day), is Bowery Electric's sophomore record - Beat. Slotting into a timeless sub-genre with the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack, the New York-based duo's avant-garde trip-hop stands the test of time and represents a sprawling range of influences.

Askew tragically died in 2016 in the fire at a warehouse known as the Ghost Ship that belonged to an Oakland, California artist collective. It has taken Ashlyn some time to come to terms with the tragedy and recording her debut album as SRSQ, Unreality, in 2018 has helped ease the pain. Temporal Love / Unkept is her new single. Konfusion

Apparent studio magpie, Jonas Meyer, releases his debut album, Konfusion, through Serein. The German musician makes his music from picking whatever catches his eye in the studio - various keyboards and synths and percussion, which are then manipulated. His sound straddles the precise editing of the digital world and more organic, gentle sounds.

Kryshe
Continuum

Continuum is the third album by electronic artist Kryshe making him a major artist in the Serein stable. As the title suggests, the album is very much a continuation of the ambient sounds from previous albums March of the Mysterious and Hauch. A mix of dreamlike sounds made from voice, strings and field recordings.

K. Leimer / Marc Barreca
The Chains Of Being

Veteran synth-based multi-instrumentalists K. Leimer and Marc Barreca team up on this incredible and beautifully presented record. Consisting of three lengthy compositions inspired by the beauty of Spanish cathedrals, according to its creators, The Chains of Being is reminiscent of the likes of Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream, and comes in a folder printed in letterpress with wood and lead varieties.

Edu Comelles
Still Life

Valencia-based artist Edu Comelles has always been more of a sound designer or sculptor, more than a musician per se. His latest studio album, Still Life, is more testament to this, and the set is presented in lavish package of three CDs, with luxury prints, bookmarks and even scents packed up in a hardbound cloth book.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Lo Five
Geography of the Abyss

Lo Five, AKA Neil Grant is a Liverpool based producer who plies his trade in the world of ambient and experimental electronica. Geography of the Abyss is his second full length album. The music explores states of mind and how our perception of things can change - a thematic continuation from his first album.

Fenella
Fenella

Fenella is a project from one Jane Weaver, one of the 21st century's most adept practitioners of psychedelia. Along with two of her bandmates, she has created a soundtrack for Marcell Jankovics’ 'Fehérlófia', a 1981 Hungarian animated film that is a perfect match for Weaver's brand of warm and colourful psychedelia.

Oliver Patrice Weder
OPW

A classically-influenced jazz and piano player, Swiss-born musician Oliver Patrice Weder has composed music for the film The Haunted as well as soundtracks for the BBC in his career. He now presents his debut album OPW, on which he’s been writing over the last couple of years, on SA Recordings.

Will Burns & Hannah Peel
Chalk Hill Blue (Deluxe Edition)

Musician Hannah Peel and poet Will Burns link up for the dreamy Chalk Hill Blue. Neither artist takes the lead here, sometimes Burns responds to Peel and sometimes Peel to Burns. The result is always captivating; Burns delivers his poems with authority and conviction, while Peel's music is as eccentric as usual. This edition is bundled with the duo's 'Pale Tussock' 7".

Ancestral Voices is Liam Blackburn who has also been known as drum 'n' bass impresario, Indigo, and as one half of Akkord along with Synkro AKA Joe McBride. Samhain EP is released on his own label, The Fifth Kingdom, which he set up in 2018. This three-track EP is trippy, ambient, transcendental and ritualistic.

Stars Of The Lid
Gravitational Pull vs The Desire for an Aquatic Life

Gravitational Pull vs. the Desire for an Aquatic Life is, I have to say, a pretty fantastically appropriate title for a Stars of the Lid album. Captures the elemental, slow-moving feel of their drone compositions, not to mention their profound beauty. This is their second album, from 1996, on Kranky Records.

Cranes
Wings Of Joy

Some might call Cranes’ genre-defying mix of dreampop with gothic instrumentations melodramatic, others would say it’s revolutionary. We won’t take much of a stand here: either way, their debut Wings of Joy is being brought back to life by the kind folks at Music on Vinyl. Dive right back into their experimental take on early 90s shoegaze!

Isnaj Dui
Sight Seeing

Katie English has attracted a devoted cult fanbase over the years for her impressionistic electronica under her Isnaj Dui moniker. Two years after her triumphant Poiesis album comes Sight Seeing, a record conceptually concerned with synaesthesia but also a range of common and rare sight disorders and which sees the compositions constantly degrading and distorting.

A Winged Victory For The Sullen
The Undivided Five

Their fifth release (but only their second official studio album) and based around the idea of the perfect fifth, A Winged Victory For The Sullen begin a new life on Ninja Tune with a bold different direction on 'The Undivided Five'. Built on their neo-classical and ambient roots, it’s by far the duo of Dustin O’Halloran and Adam Wiltzie's (Stars of the Lid) most immersive and detailed work yet.
  • Genre(s):

Dots
Dots

When are Dots not Dots. When those Dots are in fact Atom™ (how do you pronounce that by the way?). Astral Industries issue this 1994 album of charming pointillist ambience. Sounds like a music box playing a lullaby in a rainstorm. That kind of thing that makes you forget where you are, even for a moment.

Shorelights
Bioluminescence

Shorelights is the work of ambient techno's best Rod (Modell) of Deepchord, Echospace etc. and others alongside Walter Wasacz. We should be grateful for every morsel Modell throws at us (and there are many) as he is the master of deeply immersive and beautifully melancholic long form techno. Expect beautiful shimmering landscapes that will make your heart skip a beat.

Grouper
A I A : Dream Loss

AIA: Dream Loss was the first of a two part album series released by Grouper (aka Liz Harris) in 2011. The album continues her journey into deep ambience and distorted slow moving dream pop and has been compared to the earlier similarly muffled and spacey sound of Flying Saucer Attack. Long out of print, these two albums have received essential re-issue courtesy of the good people at Kranky.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Grouper
A I A : Alien Observer

AIA: Alien Observer was the second part of a two part album series by Liz Harris (aka Grouper) and is the marginally more accessible of the two discs. Here Harris uses her voice to create vocal drones and loops that mesh with her simple, organic instrumentation. As always it's superbly crafted groggy and sleepy ambience with moments of true beauty by one of the most important ambient artists of her day.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Kali Malone
Cast Of Mind

Drones for synthesiser and woodwind. The lazy thing to do would be to compare Cast of Mind to Ellen Arkbro's excellent For Brass and Organ. But I am lazy, so I will. Where Arkbro focussed on the analogue Kali Malone, juxtaposes it with the digital, allowing for further exploration. On Hallow Ground.

Dallas Acid
The Spiral Arm

The Spiral Arm is the first album for All Saint Records by synth-orientated dream-pop group Dallas Acid, and their third album proper overall in the last decade. The trio’s career has also seen them do soundtrack work, and collaborate last year with Laraaji, and that fondness for and experience in creating cinematic soundscapes is detectable here.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Cigarettes After Sex
Cry

Promising more blissful, narcoleptic dream-pop after the success of his early singles, Greg Gonzalez delivers his second Cigarettes After Sex album, Cry. Recorded and finessed by Gonzalez himself during sessions in the middle of the night in Spain, it’s another suite of meditations on intimacy and heartbreak.

Massive Attack
Heligoland

This was the fifth album from the masters of trip hop and as usual contains an array of guests including Horace Andy (natch), Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval and..well...  Guy Garvey. You can't get all your decisions correct I suppose but this is an overlooked album by these experts of dark beats and now has been re-issued on double LP.

Netherworld
Algida Bellezza

Inspired by first-time fatherhood, Glacial Movements label founder Alessandro Tedeschi - also known as Netherworld - has dedicated his latest album Algida Bellezza to his baby daughter. With its tracks named after the Latin labels for various Arctic-dwelling animals, the almost entirely synthesiser-driven collection is preoccupied with disappearing innocence and beauty.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Ironomi
琹の葉 kotonoha

The eighth studio album by Japanese duo ironomi is also their first release on vinyl. Unmistakably pastoral and serene in tone, Kotonoha is evocative of walks through ancient forests and landscapes, with Junya Yanagidaira and Yu Isobe’s instincts very much in tune with nature for a long time by this point.

Zann
Strange Ways / Inside Jungle

Zann feature Udo Winkler, a former member of post punk band Konec. He became interested in the music of Brian Eno, David Byrne, Jon Hassell, David Sylvian, German bands such as Embryo and Dissidenten along with middle & far eastern music. This all lead to the recording in 1988 of Strange Ways/Inside Jungle, an experimental album of ambient, jazz, synth and folk but with middle eastern instrumentation at its heart.  Originally released in 1990 as a private pressing, reissued and remastered from the original tapes.

Nils Frahm
All Encores

The incomparable Nils Frahm presents the third and final instalment in his Encores series of EPs in September, with all three of the compositions to be made available as an 80-minute album titled All Encores. Conceived of as “musical islands” off of the mainland of last year’s album All Melody, the third part is more percussive and electronic than the previous EPs that focussed on piano and ambience.

Nils Frahm
Encores 3

Nils Frahm is also known as the 'piano man' and indeed invented that 'piano day' you see people rattling on about every year. Encores 3 is the third (natch) of his trilogy of work exploring different avenues of his sound. Where part one was generally solo piano and acoustic and part two ambient, part three is all about the percussive and electronic side of his music. The three EPs will at some stage be available as one 80 minute collection but for now it's time to delve in to the last in the series as a standalone disc.

Ruins
Marea / Tide

Ruins are Alessandro Pizzin and Piergiuseppe Ciranna, an Italian Wave duo from Venice. 'Marea / Tide' is an album from 1983 inspired by Venetian painter Luigi Viola. It is another of those lost classics, well, not so much lost as destroyed. 600 copies were pressed, of which, due to the old chestnut of poor management, 300 were kept in storage before being binned. Music From Memory has repressed the album and included a bonus 7” single. Get in!

Matthew Collings
Uzonia

Matthew Collings is a Scottish-based composer who mixes traditional orchestra instruments with electronics to create his pieces. Uzonia is taken from a term coined by Architect Frank Lloyd Wright as Usonia, being the ideal view of America. Collings interprets this term, in a world that has seen Trump elected and the UK vote to leave the EU, as a mix of something Utopian and something that has the potential to cause danger, or just be meaningless.

Greg Foat & James Thorpe
Photosynthesis

Electronic music artists Greg Foat and James Thorpe continue their loving tribute to the curious world of library music with their second record. Photosynthesis was delivered by surprise to the Athens of the North label earlier in 2019, having been recorded quickly on quarter-inch tape on the Isle of Wight.

Aphex Twin
Selected Ambient Works 85-92

Not sure that you need us to introduce this one to you. The album that broke Aphex Twin to the masses (relatively speaking), Selected Ambient Works 85-92 starts with two genuinely sublime pieces of music, ‘Xtal’ and ‘Tha’, which your collection literally cannot be without. The whole thing is great though, whether for solo listening late at night or for esoteric dancefloors. An absolute classic.

Brian Eno
Ambient 4: On Land

Brian Eno’s specifically-titled Ambient series of albums culminated in Ambient 4: On Land, a particularly dense and somewhat dark listen, miles away from the bright emptiness of Ambient 1. Jon Hassell, Daniel Lanois and Bill Laswell were involved in helping Eno achieve this (still) strange and evocative expanse. Virgin reissue.
  • Genre(s):
  • Ambient / Downtempo / Dreampop

Brian Eno
Discreet Music

Early solo Brian Eno material from 1975, originally issued through Eno’s legendary Obscure Records. Side A is the real Discreet Music, one of his very first self-defined ‘ambient’ works, recorded with an EMS Synthi AKS and tape loops (mmmm, yum). Side B involves messing around with Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, with pleasing results. Virgin reissue.
