Angelo Badalamenti
Twin Peaks (Death Waltz Edition)

This new vinyl edition of the Twin Peaks score has been pressed on ‘damn fine coffee’-coloured vinyl, an extremely Death Waltz Recording Company thing to do. Mind you, they’re a good label who do good records, and there are arguably few good-er records than Angelo Badalamenti’s acclaimed score for the original Twin Peaks. You probably know how this thing goes now - ethereal, loungey, Lynchian, peerless.

Alex Puddu
The Golden Age Of Danish Pornography

The sleeve art and concept may be a bit naughty but Alex Puddu's soundtracks are pretty legendary to anyone who enjoys a bit of evening funk, cocktail mood music and '70s breaks. Containing three tracks not on the original release, this is a re-press of Puddu's soundtracking for a series of four hardcore Danish pornography films. A dirty job but I suppose someone has to do it.

Sven Libaek

A re-issue of a rarely seen record in the library recording genre, Sven Libaek’s Solar Flares album from 1974 featured the pioneering use of the Qaser synthesiser, a prototype for the legendary Fairlight CMI that revolutionised pop in the following decade. A brilliant companion to his Inner Space album, it also includes a number of highly regarded Australian session musicians laying down spacey grooves.

Pierre Raph
Jeunes Filles Impudiques

Jeunes Filles Impudiques is a 1973 French erotic drama about hitchiking schoolgirls. The film isn’t great, but we're not here for that. Director Jean Rollin used the pseudonym of Miche Gentil in an attempt to disown it. The soundtrack, however, fuses French hard-bop with acid folk. It’s quite something and has been put out by Finders Keepers as a five-track EP.

Federico Fellini & Nino Rota
La Strada

The score to Frederico Fellini’s 1954 film La Strada was composed by Nino Rota. Its main theme recurs throughout the film being played by the characters, firstly on violin then on trumpet. Fellini initially wanted to use a soundtrack by Arcangelo Corelli which he played on tape whilst filming. Rota wasn’t particularly on board with this idea so wrote his own piece that was rhythmically identical to match the on screen movements. Rota’s final score included parts that were reminiscent to Larghetto from Dvořák's Opus 22 Serenade for Strings in E major.

According to composer Hans Zimmer, the only information he was given before having to come up with the basic idea, in one day, for the score for ‘Interstellar’, was an envelope from director Christopher Nolan with a note saying “Once we become parents, we can’t help but look at ourselves through the eyes of our children.” Zimmer went on to conduct 45 scoring sessions for the movie.

The Music From Bagpuss

Hello all 40+ somethings out there. You'll remember big saggy 70s cloth cat Bagpuss from your favourite childhood television show and the beautifully constructed folk soundtrack it snored around? Brings back memories doesn't it? Well the soundtrack actually works as a lovely album even without the nostalgia associated with the cat and now you can get it on a wonderful Christmas present-ready 'shop window' edition vinyl or book back CD with all your favourite slightly hip people talking about the album in an accompanying book. Wake up, and look at this thing that I bring!

John Cameron
Kes (Original Soundtrack Music)

One of the great British films of all time, Ken Loach's 'Kes' is an atmospheric classic for any of us who grew up in the North of England but the soundtrack by John Cameron is equally evocative. He put together a crack jazz line up to get into the heart of the film and so the soundtrack will appeal to jazz as well as film buffs. A beautiful daydream antidote to an all too real South Yorkshire nightmare. This is the real thing. This is beauty so fragile it hurts" says Jarvis Cocker in his liner notes.

Erlon Chaves
Procura-se uma Virgem

Despite dying in 1974 at the age of just 41, Erlon Chaves is still well-known in his native land for his work in TV and film scoring. Chaves brought elements of funk and samba to the world of library music, and these unusual elements set him apart from many of his contemporaries in the field. His score for 1971 soft-porn flick Procura-se uma Virgem is a perfect setting for his groovy, slightly louche brand of soundtrack work. Now reissued via Mad About Records.

Queen
Bohemian Rhapsody (The Original Soundtrack)

I’m probably right in thinking that Norman’s stance on Queen is that they’re crap [editorial note; it's not!].....[Actual Editor's Note: It is!] . Love ‘em or hate ‘em, though, it is undeniable that Freddie Mercury was a one-off and they don’t make music like anyone else. Here we have the soundtrack to the massively successful Bohemian Rhapsody, the film about Freddie Mercury and Queen. It’s a mix of previously released Queen songs and previously unreleased songs from their legendary Live Aid performance. You also get the bonus of the 20th Century Fox fanfare being played in Brian May’s signature guitar style. The press release bangs on about sales achieved in Q4 - when did it stop being about the music, man? Double Heavyweight Vinyl LP on Virgin EMI.

The soundtrack to a film which nostalgically recalls a time when the post-war social consensus in Britain was in a significantly better state than it is in the neo-liberal, late-capitalist hell that is 2019. Broadmead - named after a now-decaying shopping centre in Bristol, is directed by Mat Consume (No Future) and Stanley Donwood (yes, that one, who does artwork for Radiohead) and is scored by composers John Matthias and Jay Auborn.

"Record Store Collapses Under Weight of John Carpenter Re-issues" was an earlier the Onion-style headline we once used to try to make you crack a smile and lo and behold here is another re-press from the soundtrack lord. This time it's the soundtrack for They Live one of his urban Western type films with a fist fight and a sci-fi twist. One of the most interesting things about this re-issue is that it has artwork designed by Alan Hynes which reveals hidden messages when you put on the enclosed pair of sunglasses. Carl Thiel
Seis Manos (Music From The Netflix Original Series)

With scores such as From Dusk ‘Til Dawn and Machete under his belt, it seems that Carl Thiel would be the natural choice for scoring the animated Netflix series Seis Manos. The series centres around the lives of three friends, once orphaned, who were trained in martial arts set in a fictional town in 1970s Mexico. The music mixes the cool sounds of ‘60 and ‘70s movies with modern action film scores, seasoned with Mexican instrumentation.

Ben Frost
Dark: Cycle 2 (Original Music From The Netflix Series)

Ben Frost’s music has always had a cinematic quality to it, so it makes sense that recent years have seen the Aussie composer increasingly writing for the screen. He turns in a typically Frostian set for the OST of Netflix’s Dark: Cycle 2. These tracks are full of foreboding electronics, writhing drones and icy strings that have something of a Bernard Herrmann influence to them. It’s all very Black Mirror, which is to say it sounds quite like Geoff Barrow’s solo work.

Weirdly, the evocative, dreamy music was made in Leeds by a couple of punk-era musicians Graeme Miller & Steve Shill and Finders Keepers have already issued the soundtrack on vinyl to the joy of middle-aged dads everywhere. This version is a Winter Wunderland Edition which, without the benefit of further information, we presume is the same soundtrack in more 'wintery' sleeve art.

Steve Horelick
Madman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

It could be said that what sets 1982 slasher flick, Madman, apart from its contemporaries is the direction of Joe Giannone. The soundtrack ain’t too shabby either, with Steve Horelick using pretty much every synth he can get his hands on to create an eerie score that only serves to make the film even more frightening.
