Jóhann Jóhannsson
Arrival (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Jóhann Jóhannsson is known for his modern composition skills, often working with stately piano and subtle electronics. But for his original soundtrack to the big new film Arrival, he follows the plot’s lead by centering his compositions around the voice. The results can sometimes recall Holly Herndon relocated to a dramatic orchestral context: e.g. really rather interesting. CD release on Deutsche Grammophon.

Konami Kukeiha Club
Castlevania: Rondo Of Blood / Dracula X (Original Video Game Soundtrack)

Mondo’s ongoing Castlevania series finds the label reissuing two more soundtracks from the seminal video game franchise. Here we have the music from Rondo Of Blood (1993) and Dracula X (1995) games. This is golden-age Konami Kuheika Club stuff, all power-pop synth fireworks and guitar stunts lifted from the world of Japanese wrestling.

Mikael Tariverdiev
Seventeen Moments of Spring

Mikael Tariverdiev's score to the legendary (at least in ex-Soviet states) Seventeen Moments of Spring. Though Tariverdiev was initially reluctant to get involved, his soundtrack for the 12 part series would become one of the most iconic in the history of Russian filmmaking. The show follows a Soviet spy working undercover in Nazi Germany, and needed a score to match its weight and drama. Tariverdiev succeeded.

The soundtrack to Zerzura, the first every Saharan acid Western. It was composed by Ahmoudou Madassane who also wrote the film and acted in it. Once the film had been shot  recorded the whole soundtrack while watching it giving the music a powerful connection to the footage. He mostly used an electric guitar, playing in the Tuareg folk style.

Daniel Pemberton
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Daniel Pemberton’s score to the latest in the never-ending run of Spider-Man movies gets a standalone release. The Ocean’s 8/Steve Jobs composer does a decent job of teaching an old dog new tricks here. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’s mix of symphony and schmaltz might be enough to get Pemberton another Golden Globe nomination.

Jerry Goldsmith
Logan's Run

There’s all sorts going on in Jerry Goldsmith’s score for the 1976 sci-fi dystopia flick Logan’s Run. Some of the string melodies are so grand and brazen that you’d be surprised if Hans Zimmer hadn't studied them at some point. That said, there’s also the strange avant drones of György Ligeti, zany synths that prefigure Tron and moments of faux-primitivism that clearly takes cues from The Planet Of The Apes. Now Waxwork Records and MONDO bloke Justin Ishmael have teamed up to drop this remastered version of the score. Comes with nice new artwork.

Following a similar style to Drive, Martinez relies on synths to create a dark and tense soundtrack. In addition to the score by Martinez, the album features an exclusive song by Father John Misty along with classics by The Mamas & The Papas, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Elyse Weinberg.

Jóhann Jóhannsson
The Theory of Everything

The modestly titled Theory Of Everything is the latest astrophysical blockbuster about the life and times of renowned scientist Stephen Hawking. Chronicling his life in both the personal and professional sphere, it needs one of those minimal but ultimately touching soundtracks, and composer Jóhann Jóhannsson steps up to the plate to provide one, creating nuanced but detailed works typical of his style.

Jon McCallum
Surf Nazis Must Die (Original 1987 Motion Picture Soundtrack)

If you haven't watched 'Surf Nazis Must Die', it's about a bunch of Neo-Nazis who can surf and take control of a Californian beach -- then a grieving mother takes revenge on them with a lot of grenades. Yeah. Now, its soundtrack is being released by the newly launched Strange Disc Records. The score was never released alongside the movie, so this is its first official release: the music was composed and arranged by cult movie musician Jon McCallum, who decided the movie needed a good dosage of foreboding synth to go along with it. For fans of the dark ambient sound made by acts such as Tangerine Dream.

Grant Kirkhope
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Grant Kirkhope - the video-game composer responsible for the music of Goldeneye and Banjo-Kazooie - served up a predictably zany soundtrack for Ubisoft’s 2014 game Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. The fully-orchestrated score draws strongly from Kirkhope’s previous work as well as Camille Saint-Saens’s beloved Carnival Of The Animals. It appears here as another lavish release from iam8bit - gatefold sleeve, actual fuzzy moustache (!) and paper character cutouts all come as standard.

The original score by Le Matos is a fantastic mix of driving synth horror and ambient subtlety. It echos masters such as John Carpenter and oozes a cool horrorific goo.

What you may not be aware of is that this Strange Disc reissue is the first time that Tom McCullough’s score has been pressed on vinyl. Neat. Joe Hisaishi
Tori No Hito - Nausicaä Of The Valley Of Wind: Image Album

Before Studio Ghibli made Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind, composer Joe Hisaishi created a soundtrack based on the manga that inspired the film. In the same way that a film studio will create concept artwork to get a better sense of how the film might look, this is a concept album (thought obviously not in the traditional sense of the phrase). A golden opportunity to get a glimpse at Studio Ghibli's creative process.

1968’s The Invasion is one of the many parts of Doctor Who franchise that gets fans all hot and bothered. An eight-part serial directed by Douglas Camfield, some of the show’s original tapes were lost pretty soon after it aired. How, then, do we now have a soundtrack release for it? Well - fortunately composer Don Harper kept a ‘composer’s copy’ that, though different from the final cut, was enough to work from. Unfortunately nothing to do with THE Mike Myers, Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers was the first film in John Carpenter’s Halloween series that saw Alan Howarth composing the music solo. He took to his new-found freedom with gusto, layering every-more campy organs and ghoulish synths over the bones of Carpenter’s ideas. Now the score is reissued with new artwork on Death Waltz.

Peter Howell and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop
Doctor Who: The Five Doctors

What an exciting thing, particularly for fans of everything 'Doctor Who': the soundtrack to 90-minute 1983 BBC TV special The Five Doctors, marking 20 years of The Doctor. Peter Davison was joined by Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Richard Hurndall. The eerie and highly evocative music was composed by Peter Howell at the Radiophonic Workshop -- originally mixed in mono but included here is a newer, subtle stereo image. A later version mixed in Dolby Surround was requested for the Special Edition, this version is also present and correct. Double LP, presented by Silva Screen in a gatefold sleeve with a nice design by Clayton Hickman.

Daniel Pemberton
One Strange Rock (Original Series Soundtrack)

One Strange Rock is Darren Aronofsky and National Geographic’s documentary about the planet Earth, told with a literally out-of-this-world perspective (e.g. by astronauts). It's a massive, large-scoped project that naturally requires a suitably big soundtrack, and Daniel Pemberton delivers this in spades. Here is his soundtrack work, sequenced into a double album that’s meant to be sat down and properly listened to. On Lakeshore Records.

Steve Nolan
Sodium Party

Steve Nolan used to play with industrial rockers In Dust, but right here he is operating solo, providing the score to an indie film named Sodium Party. This is far from industrial or rock: rather, the tracks here are sweeping synth-orchestral works, semi-ambient and totally cinematic. Originally released as a cassette in an edition of 100 copies and now available on vinyl.

Along with his band The Maypoles, Berry has reinterpreted several of his favourite television themes - hence the LP being called ... Television Themes - from days of yore. ‘Blankety Blank’, ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Rainbow’ and more are reimagined in a library-ish style here. Given that this is music for Black Mirror we’re willing to wager that Isham might have cranked the weird factor even further than usual here.

I recently learned that Hans Zimmer was involved with The Buggles and even appears in the video for ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’. But ol’ Zimms isn’t the only Buggle associate to have gone into the seedy world of soundtracks. Star Buggle Trevor Horn himself has had, among many other things, quite the soundtracking career, even working with super Hans on the 1992 film Toys. Here, he lends his expertise to the music for the superhero/villain anime The Reflection.

Adrian Younge
Black Dynamite (Instrumentals / Original Motion Picture Score)

Director Scott Sanders made 'Black Dynamite' as a parody of the Blaxploitation genre, about a spy on a mission to take revenge on his brother's murderer. The score was composed by Adrian Younge, and was his first ever release. Like Sanders' film, it's inspired by and sends up the music of Blaxploitation cinema, utilising synth, keyboards and organs as well as sax and soft percussion. 'Black Dynamite' shows that Younge has a firm understanding of the tropes that made this genre so prominent. On 'Black Dynamite (Instruments / Original Motion Picture Score)', Younge offers up the instrumentals that comprised the film's score.

Alain Goraguer
La Planete Sauvage - Original Soundtrack

Long renowned as one of the most dazzling and original animated films to burst forth from the European quarter, Its soundtrack is actually as celebrated as the beloved film from 1973, Re-issued on wax by J Saul Kane's DC recordings around the Millennium and again a few years back, this is the latest definitive version from crate diggers extraordinaire Superior Viaduct. This OST is a wicked, groovesome soupçon of styles with the emphasis on funk, orchestral and astral tones to create a true 70's space-face classic. Sampled to hell for generations, make sure you bag this if you've not indulged previously. In this age of lavish soundtrack fetishism, there's a handful that truly ARE indispensible and work as well away from the movie as with it.

David Housden
Thomas Was Alone: Official Soundtrack

Here we have a game soundtrack... We all love our game soundtracks, don't we?  The train of thought for David Housden when composing 'Thomas Was Alone', went something along the lines of: quiet, tense atmospheres (sparse piano fragments), dramatic builds (dense string sections) and spooky-otherworldy oddness (haunting, eerie synths). Both game and sounds have garnered widespread applause -- with BAFTA nominations for story *and* music! Now remastered for vinyl, in limited 180g red or 'classic' black LP editions. Also, includes new tracks for the release on PS4. Which'll make sense to the gamers, I'm sure. Release through Black Screen Records.

Virgin Witch (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

One out of leftfield for you folks. Working solo Dicks also made the Catweasle theme tune and scored a couple of films, including Virgin Witch which was a racey and x-certified film about lesbian witches.
