Straight Outta Compton - Music From The Motion Picture

The soundtrack compilation from the film Straight Outta Compton can’t really fail to be great can it? As well as crucial cuts from the original N.W.A. album the film takes its name from, we also solo Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg tracks, as well as tone-setting numbers from the likes of Parliament and Funkadelic. Double LP on Universal.

Power Glove
Trials Of The Blood Dragon (Original Game Soundtrack)

Trials Of The Blood Dragon is a new game, but in a vintage style, allowing the soundtrack to revisit familiar 80’s tropes through 2016 lenses. Power Glove go hard on the synth arpeggios and big drum machines: it really does sound like 1986! Out on CD and double pink vinyl LP, courtesy of Invada.

Bernard Herrmann

Toru Takemitsu
Ran - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Ran is the last epic of legendary director Akira Kurosawa, and it was soundtracked by Toru Takemitsu, one of Japan’s finest 20th century composers. Takemitsu engaged with the influence of Mahler on this score, but also brought in plenty of his own bold approaches to composition. This double LP release on Silva Screen is the first time this full version of the score has appeared on vinyl.

Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein
Stranger Things: Season 1 - Volume 1

I don't really have to sell this to you do I? First up it's the soundtrack for Netflix new telly programme that Phil tells me is good. Secondly it has a synth vibe reminiscent of all those synth guys you know and love. You can bet your house that the first name I'm going to throw at you is John Carpenter closely followed by Tangerine Dream, Cliff Martinez and a bit of Aphex Twin thrown in for good measure. Created by two of the guys from S U R V I V E. Sold.

John Williams
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi

Roque Baños
Don't Breathe (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Don’t Breathe is a properly eerie horror film about not breathing, and a fair amount of its visceral impact comes from Roque Baños’ original score, which treats the audience / listener like a plaything. The tense passages are very tense indeed, and the climactic parts will spook you for sure. The soundtrack is released on double orange vinyl via Invada.

Jerry Fielding
The Nightcomers

The Nightcomers is a gothic horror tale from 1971, starring Marlon Brando. Set in a grand country house and with lots of creepy goings on, there is much for film composer Jerry Fielding to sink his teeth into, and this fully-orchestrated soundtrack is tender and dramatic and highly cinematic. 180g vinyl release on Silva Screen.

Ennio Morricone
Morricone 60

Even if you don't recognise his name, you'll definitely recognise his music. Most widely known for his 'spaghetti western' soundtracks, Ennio Morricone is the hugely prolific composer behind movies like The Good The Bad And The Ugly, most recently The Hateful Eight, and many hundreds of others in between. Morricone 60 is Ennio's own project, an orchestral tribute to some of his greatest work over the decades. Expect nothing less than the dramatic and powerful orchestral pieces for which he is known and loved. Released as Vinyl Double LP, CD, and Deluxe CD on Decca. The Deluxe edition includes a brand new documentary.

Richard Einhorn
Shock Waves - Original Motion Picture Score

Composed entirely on analog synthesisers, Richard Einhorn’s soundtrack to the 1977 horror film Shock Waves was alongside the first electronic soundtracks. Cold and sheer terror, the tracks play out like screaming machines, quite literally, Zombie Chase is horrific. Comes with liner notes from the director and Einhorn.

Beat Street - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Volume 1

The 1984 movie Beat Street is all about New York’s burgeoning street hip-hop culture, which was really starting to sizzle at this point. Needless to say, the soundtrack is well stuffed with the same excellence as the film: Afrika Bambaataa, Treacherous Three, Grandmaster Melle Mel & The Furious Five and many more. Volume 1 of the soundtrack is reissued on vinyl by Music On Vinyl.

Bernard Herrmann
Twisted Nerve: Super Deluxe Edition

The complete soundtrack to the 1968 film Twisted Nerve, as composed by the majestic Bernard Herrmann himself. That includes the captivating ‘whistle theme’ later used in Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1. As well as the full OST on vinyl and CD and a bonus 7”, these box-set editions include high-def audio downloads of the complete original recording sessions! On Stylotone.

Mac Quayle
Mr. Robot Season 1 Volume 1 (Original Soundtrack)

Mac Quayle has been soundtracking the excellent show Mr. Robot from the beginning, and Geoff Barrow’s Invada label is now putting that soundtrack out into the world on deluxe vinyl. Quayle worked with Cliff Martinez on all those slick Nicolas Winding Refn films (Drive etc.), and has the same kind of knack for potent synth atmospheres. This is Volume 1 of the full soundtrack, pressed to 2 white vinyl LPs.

BBC Radiophonic Workshop
The Soundhouse

The BBC Radiophonic Workshop was responsible for nurturing talents such as Delia Derbyshire, and developing madness through experimental hand-cut tape loops and signal generators before synthesizers were available. This is a reissue of the first work made by them with the invention of the first digital polyphonic sampler, which cut their workload massively.

Cyclobe
Sulphur-Tarot-Garden

Cyclobe have recorded three pieces to go with a triumvirate of what have been called “alchemical dream pieces” filmed by Derek Jarman. The core of Cyclobe, Ossian Brown and Stephen Thrower are augmented by Michael J. York, Cliff Stapleton and John Contreras. Sulphur-Tarot-Garden is available on transparent vinyl LP and CD.

Boom Bip
Sun Choke

Boom Bip is a meticulous creator. With each album he has done for Lex Records showing his huge range of mastery in sampling and pure instrumentation it’s only logical he would be asked to do score work for someone. The pieces are minimal,  droning and synthetic movements that don’t sit with you easily.

Gruff Rhys
Set Fire To The Stars

Good isn't he? This soundtrack to a film about Dylan Thomas's first week in the USA has a warm hopeful feel with the Super Furry Animals lad effortlessly blending cocktail jazz, Americana and Atomic Age bop using vintage instruments and live takes. Recorded at the same time but in very different circumstances to his last LP 'American Interior', this sounds like it will be an essential addition to his back catalogue.

Khyam Allami
As I Open My Eyes / A Peine J'ouvre Les Yeux (Original Soundtrack)

Khyam Alami has assembled the soundtrack to the impressive feature length debut of Leyla Bouzid, A Peine J’ouvre Les Yeux (or As I Open My Eyes). The film is about an alt-rock band formed by an 18-year old girl in pre-revolutionary Tunisia, and the songs of this band make up most of the soundtrack: the rest is atmospheric incidental music. On Nawa Recordings.

Jeff Russo
Fargo - Original Soundtrack: Season 2

The soundtrack to the second season of the TV version of Fargo, originally scored by Jeff Russo. As well as his dramatic orchestrals, songs featured in the series from Fleetwood Mac, Bobby Womack and other quality songwriters are included.

Ryuichi Sakamoto
Nagasaki: Memories Of My Son

Ryuichi Sakamoto should be familiar to fans of several different strands of sound, having done crucial work as part of Yellow Magic Orchestra, some explorative collaborations with Fennesz, and many years of sensitive film soundtrack work. This most recent release falls into the latter camp, being the accompaniment to Yoji Yamada’s Nagasaki: Memories Of My Son. Lush and fully orchestrated. Released by Milan.

Various / David Bowie
Lazarus (Original Cast Recording)

Lazarus is the musical devised by David Bowie, and this release contains versions of his music as performed in the show. Plus, as you may well have heard, the set includes the final three studio recordings ever made by Bowie himself, which is quite a big deal… Double CD and triple LP editions available, on Columbia.

Trainspotting - Music From The Motion Picture

Trainspotting was massive, you already know that. It also had an absolutely incredible lineup of artists on the soundtrack that stands on its own as a great collection of tracks that share the severe ups and downs of the film. Includes Iggy Pop, New Order, Blur, Underworld, Lou Reed, Pulp, Leftfield, Brian Eno and Damon Albarn.

Hell Or High Water - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

The mighty creative partnership that is Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (The Bad Seeds, Grinderman) has been firing on all cylinders for more than a decade now: remarkable stuff. Blue Marvin Orchestra
Codice d'Amore Orientale

Codice d’Amore Orientale is an old Italian film that looks like it might be just a little bit erotic. Film composer Alberto Baldan Bembo plays up to context by adopting the moniker Blue Marvin and directing his musicians to play some pretty wild funky experimentalism that could certainly get you in the mood. LP reissue as part of Schema’s SCEB Series.

Carter Burwell

Rovi (Piero Umiliani)
Due Temi con Variazioni

Rovi is one of the many names of Piero Umiliani: perhaps he wanted to go anonymous on this one because Due Temi con Variazoni, the Luigi Scattini film that this music originally soundtracked, is basically pornography a la Mondo. Of course, Umiliani can make that work no problem, supplying fifteen tracks of funky jazzy action sure to satisfy any listener. LP reissue as part of the the Schema SCEB Series.

Scott Walker
The Childhood of a Leader - Original Soundtrack

Wow! Brand new Scott Walker! The avant-crooner legend has been enlisted to create a full-blown orchestral score to Brady Corbet’s The Childhood of a Leader, a Satre adaptation set in 1919. There’s plenty of the dissonance of late-period Walker at play here, a perfect fit with the tense psychology of the film. On 4AD.

Altered States

Ken Russell’s 1980 sci-fi horror film Altered States is a pretty creepy, psychologically challenging picture. It has a soundtrack to match from John Corigliano, who uses every part of his orchestra to elicit dramatic tones and tunes that drawn on plenty of avant-gardeisms to achieve their impact. Remastered audio, reissued on purple and violet swirl vinyl with a glittery gatefold sleeve.

Luigi Porto
Scimmie – Colonna Sonora “L ́Apocalisse delle Scimmie” di Romano Scavolini

Romano Scavolini made and directed the film 'L'apocalisse delle Scimmie' in 2005, and asked composer Luigi Porto to give him a score that absolutely wasn't a soundtrack: according to Porto, he asked for "something that continues even if the film stops, a music that doesn't care". The result is this thing that is a soundtrack but also isn't.

Pan Sonic
Atomin Paluu

This right here represents the final recordings of Finnish heavyweights Pan Sonic! Suitably for a group with such a brutalist sound, they were commissioned to soundtrack a documentary about building a nuclear power plant: construction recordings are integrated into Vainio and Vaisanen’s harsh digital structures, with award-winning results! Atomin Paluu is out on Blast First Petite.

Basil Poledouris
Robocop: Original Score

Another day, another soundtrack to a classic 80’s film released on vinyl… This time we have Robocop, grandly and dramatically scored by Basil Poledouris, with a full orchestra working at his behest. The records (yes, the soundtrack stretches over 2 LPs) are pressed to silver wax: appropriate eh? On Milan Records.

Kreng
Camino - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

This is Kreng's score to the 2015 adventure thriller 'Camino' starring Zoe Bell (not Zoe Ball as I misread). The soundtrack has been compared to the dark-ish pop of Nine inch Nails but also has electronic elements and may appeal to fans of Mogwai's recent soundtrack work.  It all comes in deluxe packaging with booklet.

Ulas Pakkan
Baskin Original Soundtrack

Baskin is a hot new horror film from Turkey, and it comes with a noteworthy soundtrack from Ulas Pakken. It's a synth-tastic set of atmospheres, with some welcome Turkish twists to the familiar electro-horror drama sounds. Released by Invada on 2 slabs of blood red vinyl, with exclusive artwork from John Bergin.

Woodkid & Nils Frahm
Ellis

Here is the score to a short film about Ellis Island, New York, composed by Woodkid and performed by neo-classical piano wunderkind Nils Frahm. Delicate piano lines trace out the stories of thousands of twentieth century migrants, in that ever-stately Frahm manner. Oh, and both the film and the soundtrack feature Robert De Niro! Out on Erased Tapes.

Alex Somers
Captain Fantastic - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Alex Somers is the ‘Alex’ of Jónsi & Alex, and the Sigur Ros frontman does an appearance here as well. Captain Fantastic is a big movie with an accordingly big soundtrack, but there are also delicate and atmospheric textures here: it's something you’d be happy to listen to at home even if there was no movie attached. Double LP on Invada.

Pan/Scan
Cinematic Lies

Pan/Scan have a lot of love for those crucial film soundtracks of the 80’s: the synth-heavy ones from the keyboards of John Carpenter, Goblin and Fabio Frizzi. They pay their homage with Cinematic Lies, their debut full-length, which traces the outlines of an imaginary film with its multi-faceted dramatic stylings. 500 CD copies and 500 LP copies (the LP also comes with a CD), on Cineploit.

Alan Parker
One Summer

1983’s British TV show One Summer was blessed with a particularly interesting soundtrack produced by Alan Parker, whose session work saw him turning up on Kate Bush and David Bowie records. All sorts of sharp atmospheres here. The whole of his original score (the tracks are very short) is presented on this 7” on Finders Keepers.

Miles Davis
Miles Ahead (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Miles Ahead, the big new Don Cheadle biopic of Miles Davis, comes with a soundtrack that is, needless to say, stellar. 11 classic Miles tracks that span the mighty jazzman’s career are included, rounded out by some new compositions by Robert Glasper, working with Herbie Hancock and Pharoahe Monch. All on 2 vinyl LPs.
