Music from The Comedy, A Film by Rick Alverson

The Comedy is a film by Rick Alverson about an aging New York hipster, and the soundtrack, released here on LP by Jagjaguwar, also features lots of aging New York hipsters! OK, that isn’t really true, although William Basinski could probably qualify, and his wonderful Disintegration Loops feature prominently. Also includes Gayngs, Here We Go Magic, and many more...

John Carpenter
The Fog - New Expanded Edition Original Film Soundtrack

John Carpenter not only directed his 1980 spooky pirate movie The Fog, he also personally soundtracked it. Is there no end to the man’s talents? Dramatic organs and creepy synth arpeggios do an admirable job of setting the tone. And it was remastered by erstwhile collaborator Alan Howarth. This double disc set on Silva Screen contains 20 minutes of music not previously released.

Music From The Motion Picture: The Ballad Of Genesis & Lady Jaye

This is the soundtrack of the remarkable story of the pandrogyne project between Genesis P. Orridge and his/her partner Lady Jaye in which by way of thousands of pounds worth of plastic surgery Genesis more resembled his/her wife. A tale where the lyrics of the Beautiful South song 'We Are Each Other' came true. The great soundtrack features lots Genesis's projects such as Psychic TV, Thee Majesty and other collaborations.

Alain Goraguer
La Planete Sauvage - Original Soundtrack

Long renowned as one of the most dazzling and original animated films to burst forth from the European quarter, Its soundtrack is actually as celebrated as the beloved film from 1973, Re-issued on wax by J Saul Kane's DC recordings around the Millennium and again a few years back, this is the latest definitive version from crate diggers extraordinaire Superior Viaduct. This OST is a wicked, groovesome soupçon of styles with the emphasis on funk, orchestral and astral tones to create a true 70's space-face classic. Sampled to hell for generations, make sure you bag this if you've not indulged previously. In this age of lavish soundtrack fetishism, there's a handful that truly ARE indispensible and work as well away from the movie as with it.

Sonic Youth
Simon Werner A Disparu

Though Sonic Youth became a more dependable straight down the line noise machine in the latter part of their career, they continued to make more out-there music on the side that harked back to their more experimental roots. Simon Werner A Disparu is a soundtrack for the titular film by Fabrice Gobert and is an all-instrumental affair constructed from improvisations the band performed after watching the film sans soundtrack.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
Music From The Motion Picture - The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

Yeeeee-haw! Those old cowboys Nick Cave & Warren Ellis roll into town, pistols cocked and boots spurred, with their music for Andrew Dominick’s 2007 flick The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. This was only the pair’s second scoring job (they’ve since done a fair few more), but you wouldn’t know it by the confident, grand music here. Their Southern Gothic chamber schtick is highly evocative.

Tangerine Dream
Sorcerer

When I was lucky enough to be in New York 25 years ago, I walked past Roy Scheider on 5th Avenue. I was too shy to speak to him though. I wonder if he was thinking about the William Friedkin film, Sorcerer, that he’d worked on 18 years earlier? Probably not. Anyway, we have the score here which is by Tangerine Dream. It’s influence has been noticed in scores such as Blade Runner, The Terminator, Drive and Stranger Things. That would make it pretty essential, then, huh?

Jonny Greenwood
There Will Be Blood (Music From The Motion Picture)

To celebrate the 11th anniversary (possibly) of Jonny Greenwood’s score to Paul Thomas-Anderson’s cinematic Oscar-winning masterpiece, There Will Be Blood, Nonesuch are making it available on vinyl for the first time. The Radiohead guitarist composed the score inspired by the scenery rather than the story. It is played by the BBC Concert Orchestra led by Robert Ziegler, the Emperor Quartet, with cellist Caroline Dale and pianist Michael Dussek. 140g LP on Nonesuch.
