Max Richter
Waltz With Bashir

Deutsche Grammophon re-issues Max Richter’s critically adored soundtrack to Waltz With Bashir, the 2008 Israeli-animated war documentary drama directed by Ari Folman. Winning Richter the 2008 European Film Award for Best Composer, the tension and scope of his score undeniably helped sear the images of war trauma into audience’s minds.

John Carpenter
Halloween - 40th Anniversary Edition

The worlds of film and music are hell-bent on squeezing every last drop of juice from the reboot of John Carpenter’s Halloween. This one here is not to be confused with a soundtrack album for the 40th anniversary movie - it is, in fact, the 40th anniversary edition of the ORIGINAL 1978 score. Apparently the first official release of this soundtrack was a remixed version, so for this new edition Carpenter’s partner-in-crime Alan Howarth has faithfully copied over the film's audio tracks in the same order in which they appear on-screen.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
The Proposition (Original Soundtrack)

‘Mr. Cave, Mr. Ellis - welcome. We have a Proposition for you. How would you like to try your hand at scoring a film - a film starring Ray Winston, no less. We envisage that the music you’ll make for it will be quite similar to your work with The Bad Seeds but with less singing. The more abstract, synth-heavy tracks will pave the way for records you’ll make in a decade’s time, though obviously you don’t know that yet. You’ll also go on to do some more score work for plenty of other gritty Westerns in the future, though again that’s for us to know and for you to find out. Then we’ll get Mute to release your soundtrack as a standalone album. Who knows, maybe the vinyl will be a nice colour. Waddayasay?’

Harold Faltermeyer
The Running Man (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Released in 1987 and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Paul Michael Glaser’s The Running Man was a box-office hit, depicting a dystopian America where prisoners can bid to earn their freedom by escaping death at the hands of professional killers on a TV show. Its soundtrack was composed by Harold Faltermeyer, and it gets an expanded re-issue with 18 extra tracks (consisting of alternate cues and additional tracks) and extensive liner notes.

Alison Chesley, Steve Albini, Tim Midyett
Music from the film Girl on the Third Floor

Look at that terrifying house. It depicts the upcoming horror film Girl on the Third Floor made by director Travis Stevens. To create a suitably creepy soundtrack he recruited Steve Albini to put together a collective and he in turn drafted in Tim Midyett (Mint Mile, Silkworm) and Alison Chesley (Helen Money). A truly fascinating sounding concept.

Laurel Halo
Possessed

The soundtrack for 2018’s movie Possessed, by artist collective Metahaven and Rob Schröder, scored by American-based musician Laurel Halo. It’s her first venture into soundtrack work, and her ability to create highly emotionally resonant instrumental music works very much in her favour on this sweepingly beautiful mix of synthetic and acoustic soundscapes.

Roy Budd
The Internecine Project

Trunk might well have unearthed a gem in this previously unreleased score from Roy Budd. Budd, as you may know, was master of 1970s scores and The Internecine Project comes from his peak pre-Get Carter period. The film with its oddball title and James Coburn lead fell under the radar somewhat and therefore the soundtrack is one of Budd's lesser known works. Get it now on limited one time vinyl pressing.

David Arnold
Good Omens (Original Soundtrack)

Good Omens - you know, the TV show about Satanism - was scored by Sherlock/Casino Royale composer David Arnold. Good Omens has that Stranger Things/Sabrina vibe to it where it’s kind of spooky and kind of campy at the same time, and Arnold’s compositions really add to the effect. Nice stuff with a hint of the Harry Potters about it. Silva Screen are the ones responsible for putting the music on wax.

Color Out of Space is a Nicholas Cage-fronted film where he finds himself battling an extra terrestrial organism. William Tyler

First Cow is a film directed by Kelly Reichardt looking at the nineteenth century way of life in Pacific North West perfectly capturing the feel of rural America. Who better then to compose the soundtrack than William Tyler who has created a suitably bucolic series of tracks using his array of guitars and a hammered dulcimer which create a gorgeous accompaniment to the film.

Judgment Night (Music From The Motion Picture)

At last! A reissue of the infamous Judgment Night soundtrack. Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul, Ice-T and Slayer, Pearl Jam and Cypress Hill and Faith No More and Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. were among the collaborations that created a soundtrack unlike any other.

Mort Garson

One of the most highly prized works from Canadian composer and electronic music pioneer Mort Garson, Didn’t You Hear? was the soundtrack to the film of the same name directed by experimental filmmaker Skip Sherwood in 1970. Peaky Blinders: Original Soundtrack (Series 1-5)

I'd like the job of music chooser on Peaky Blinders. First series just pick music from Nick Cave's Greatest Hits. Second series do the same but for PJ Harvey. And on... and on. Any band out there with a dirty, bluesy sound and a decent Spotify playlist stands a chance. They get more daring though as the series wear on and the thing is... it works.  The music, though repetitive, perfectly soundtracks the grim industrial wasteland the cast shag and murder their way through. This 3LP or 2CD collection puts together all music used in the five series so far so you can swoon and imagine yourself floating in those big watery Tommy Shelby eyes as you listen.

Toshioki Matsumura
A Visual Brain: 1986-1993

Toshioki Matsumura was a Japanese musician who composed scores for video art between the years of 1986 and 1993 using then cutting edge technology to produce the works. Some of his music recalls the repetitive minimalism of Philip Glass and Steve Reich but he also strays into mutant funk, epic balladry and new-age synth pop. This collection is the first time his work has been commercially available and collects together the best bits of his catalogue.

Black Panther: The Album – Music from and Inspired By

Probably the cultural event of 2018 that will live longest in the memory, Marvel’s Black Panther really is an outstanding film. A lot of the songs here don’t appear prominently in the movie, but there’s been enough hype around this accompanying LP in its own right. You know the score at this point - Kendrick Lamar plays auteur, bringing together a load of A-listers for this head-scratching, trunk-rattling selection. If nothing else, you need this for Future’s absolutely, masterfully, hilariously ridiculous verse on ‘King’s Dead’.

James Bernard
Nosferatu

The original F.W. Murnau version of Nosferatu is an early high-point for horror films, and indeed for the medium of cinema as a whole.
