Mark Korven
The Lighthouse

Sacred Bones presents the soundtrack to Robert Eggers’ new psychological horror movie The Lighthouse, composed and recorded by Mark Korven in league with the director himself. The pair teamed up again after their unnerving work on 2015’s The Witch, this time eschewing almost everything that didn’t have some kind of nautical feel or connection. Consequently, the score - prominently featuring horns, pipes, conch shells etc. - feels completely apt and thoroughly unique.

Daughters of Darkness

Soundtrack to the cult Belgian horror film Daughters of Darkness. According to film critic Geoffrey O'Brien it's one of the classier lesbian vampire films, which is no doubt why Lil Wayne sampled its soundtrack on 'Outstanding'. The album itself is some of François De Roubaix's best work, appropriately seductive and intriguing.

Barry Gray
UFO (Original Television Soundtrack)

Presented on double-lilac vinyl, this is the original soundtrack to short-lived television series ‘UFO’, the first-ever live-action series from Gerry and Sylvia Anderson - yes, the people behind ‘Thunderbirds’, ‘Captain Scarlet’ et al - and which aired between 1970 and 1973. Composed by inimitable Barry Gray with his trademark dramatics!

Thomas Newman
Tolkien (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The soundtrack to the divisive biopic JRR Tolkien biopic,  which features Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins and which told the story of the early life of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ author. Thomas Newman’s tender and evocative soundtrack was certainly the best thing about the film. You know Tolkien lived and worked in Leeds for a bit? Local knowledge!

John Carpenter
Halloween - 40th Anniversary Edition

The worlds of film and music are hell-bent on squeezing every last drop of juice from the reboot of John Carpenter’s Halloween. This one here is not to be confused with a soundtrack album for the 40th anniversary movie - it is, in fact, the 40th anniversary edition of the ORIGINAL 1978 score. Apparently the first official release of this soundtrack was a remixed version, so for this new edition Carpenter’s partner-in-crime Alan Howarth has faithfully copied over the film's audio tracks in the same order in which they appear on-screen.

Philip Glass
Jane (Original Motion Picture Soundtracks)

The minimalist pioneer’s score for Brett Morgen’s documentary about chimpanzee researcher Jane Goodall. The hour-long soundtrack features music that runs the gamut from full-on orchestral bombast to understated piano pieces coloured with subtle use of strings. Those  trademark appregios are often a feature, of course. Double LP.

Jerry Goldsmith
Legend

The film Legend, dating from 1995, was made with two different soundtracks. History has favoured Jerry Goldsmith’s effort, and with good cause. The dramatic orchestral score is presented here in an extended form; this is also the first time it has appeared on vinyl. 180g 2LP with a poster, from Silva Screen.

PJ Harvey
All About Eve (Original Music)

Verily, it is All About Eve these days - so much so that the BBC have even discussed Killing her! PJ Harvey seems to have been swept up in all the Eve-xcitement, composing a score to the West End adaptation of this ultra-famous old movie. Ol' Polly Jean keeps things ticking along nicely, her mostly-instrumental album interspersed with a couple of those Sussex Downs ballads she does so well. The All About Eve score is out on Invada.

Stranger Things 3 (Original Score from the Netflix Original Series)

How much stranger can these things get? Season 3 of the 80s nostalgia fest that is 'Stranger Things' sees its cast of charming kids face their most terrifying enemy yet, the mall. Score provided of course by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein who are responsible for the current deluge of new-wave synth music terrorising the world.

Madonna
Who's That Girl (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Madonna was no stranger to acting in 1987 when she starred in Who’s That Girl alongside Griffin Dunne. It was her 5th role. She also performed most of the soundtrack, which just happens to be getting a gleaming reissue on crystal clear vinyl. I say she performed most of the soundtrack as it also includes songs by Scritti Politti, Duncan Faure, Club Nouveau and Michael Davidson.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis
Music From The Motion Picture - The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

Yeeeee-haw! Those old cowboys Nick Cave & Warren Ellis roll into town, pistols cocked and boots spurred, with their music for Andrew Dominick’s 2007 flick The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. This was only the pair’s second scoring job (they’ve since done a fair few more), but you wouldn’t know it by the confident, grand music here. Their Southern Gothic chamber schtick is highly evocative.

Bobby Krlic
Midsommar (Original Score)

Bobby Krlic removed his Haxan Cloak to work alongside film director Ari Aster on Midsommar. The movie is a pagan horror in the Wicker Man mould, and Krlic’s frightening compositions really augment the sense of ceremonial doom that pervades Midsommar. Nails-on-blackboard screeches, pulse-racing drums, unsettling micropolyphonic drones, it’s all in there. Krlic's music is in dialogue with the great and the good of chilling movie scores, from György Ligeti to Johnny Greenwood to Dean Hurley.

Delia Derbyshire
The Delian Mode

Delia Derbyshire is the undisputed queen of experimental electronics. Her work with the Radiophonic Workshop was nothing short of pioneering and of course her best known work is the Dr Who theme which literally everybody on the planet likes. That's how genius it is. Here's a 7" by her which is expensive yet sexy. It features two tracks, one of which was written for a TV documentary in 1967 and it features Delias voice and a green lampshade.Anything goes in Radiophonic world! Those crazy cats!

Ramin Djawadi
Game of Thrones - Music from the HBO Series: Season 6 (Coloured Tour Edition)

Game of Thrones: the show where people get hit with swords and everyone shrugs. Season six saw the grand plot twist of a person dying but then undying, and also some other stuff happened -- presumably while it snowed. This time around, composer Ramin Djawadi went properly next level on the score, offering some stunning set-pieces, including an unexpected finale composition not dissimilar from Nils Frahm or A Silver Mt. Zion. I can assure you that this sorrowful and lovely music is a lot more enjoyable when there's no one swearing, spitting or murdering over the top of it.

Coming on clear vinyl and with artwork by horror legend Graham Humphreys, you *should* get the same effect as watching the DVD with your eyes closed and a small fire crackling in the background. The League Of Gentlemen
Series Three - Do You Want A Bag With That

Another triple vinyl edition on clear vinyl of slightly disturbing comedy series The League of Gentleman. Ben Lovett
The Wind (Original Motion Picture Score)

The Wind is a horror film set in the great plains of 19th century America directed by Emma Tammi. Lovett is mainly known for being a member of folk-pop group, Mumford and Sons.

Mica Levi
Monos (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Mica Levi continues to make a case for herself as this century’s premiere film composer with her compositions for Alejandro Landes’ Monos. Levi’s scores for Under The Skin and Jackie were both characterised by space, but even in comparison to those the music of Monos is notably spare. Synthesisers, strings and drums purr away eerily, occasionally swelling to harmony or a rumble of bass before retreating into the corners. It’s an intense, menacing and hugely evocative listen.

Unusual Sounds

Since launching in 2014 the Mexican Summer reissues offshoot Anthology Recordings have unearthed some excellent old things from the likes of Pharaoh Sanders and The Nightcrawlers. For their latest trick they delve into the world of library music. The twenty tracks of Unusual Sounds are exactly the sort of cerebral oddities that we now expect as standard from these releases. Comes with liner notes from David Hollander - this is good because he’s curated an extensive history of library music that shares its title with this compilation and as such he’s rather knowledgeable on the subject.

HANNA: Season 1 (Music from the Amazon Original Series)

Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow have previous when it comes to writing for the screen - the pair teamed up to score Ex-Machina (2015) and Annihilation (2018) - but they clearly had something else in mind when they were roped in to compose the music for the first series of Hanna. Though Salisbury and Barrow’s eerie, dystopian electronics crop up plenty across this record, they also get a whole load of other musicians in on the act this time around. The Insects, Simon Ashdown and Yann McCullough all contribute, and most excitingly there are also tracks here from Karen O and Barrow’s own Beak> band.

Blade Runner 2049 (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Much to this particular Norman Records™ dogsbody’s chagrin, Blade Runner 2049 did not signal the reboot of Blade. It was, of course, a new instalment of the Blade Runner franchise, and that meant they had to go big on the music. And how, in 2019, do you go bigger than Going For Gold theme writer Hans Zimmer? It’s nearly impossible. In fact, there’s only one way to do so - get Zimmer to rope in his mate Benjamin Wallfisch on support duties. The music sounds like … well, it sounds like Hans Zimmer + pal doing the music for a Blade Runner film.

While the film was panned, the soundtrack remains a compelling curio, featuring performances from Pasadena Roof Orchestra, the Manhattan Transfer and the Village People, on top of an original Bowie track ‘Revolutionary Song’.

David Arnold
Good Omens (Original Soundtrack)

Good Omens - you know, the TV show about Satanism - was scored by Sherlock/Casino Royale composer David Arnold. Good Omens has that Stranger Things/Sabrina vibe to it where it’s kind of spooky and kind of campy at the same time, and Arnold’s compositions really add to the effect. Nice stuff with a hint of the Harry Potters about it. Silva Screen are the ones responsible for putting the music on wax.

Peter Mcconnell
Grim Fandango

iam8bit deliver another envinyled computer game soundtrack for the twentieth anniversary of lauded noir adventure Grim Fandango. A bit of a flop in 1998, the game has since accumulated the reputation it deserves, certainly due in no small part to the spirited lounge jazz of Peter McConnell’s soundtrack. Director’s Cut version recorded with real orchestra.

Fangoria presents: Hollydoom (Original Magazine Soundtrack)

Fans of US horror movie magazine, Fangoria, were no doubt beside themselves when it ceased to be printed back in 2015. It’s return has been welcomed by many horror-obsessed types across the globe. I think Fangoria are quite pleased with themselves too, as they’ve released an album of horror movie themed music, old and new. 'Hollydoom' features tracks from John Carpenter, Daniel Davies, Ogre, Gunship and Power Glove.

Castlevania - Symphony Of The Night

Michiru Yamane’s music for Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night has long been considered one of the best and most original videogame soundtracks. The score’s hugely varied influences - everything from Baroque composition to Japanese city pop to techno crops up here - means it still sounds unique more than 20 years on from the game’s release. Now Mondo have released a new version of the OST with seven bonus tracks that had previously only featured on the version of the game issued on Sega Saturn (whatever that is…).

Dan The Automator
Booksmart (Original Motion Picture Score)

Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut 'Booksmart' has garnered plenty of plaudits, not least for its charming soundtrack. We’re used to hearing Dan The Automator in hip-hop mode, and you can be sure to find plenty of breaks and beats across his compositions here. However, these more standard tricks come twinned with some of the most widescreen and ambitious arrangements the producer has ever attempted - chamber strings, 70’s cop-show guitars and library funk are all thrown into the mix on the 'Booksmart OST'.

Kristofer Maddigan
Cuphead

The music of computer game Cuphead comes in 1930s-style packaging, to match the game’s quirky style. This is a collection, a best of, if you will of the music from the game by Kristofer Maddigan who has written the most authentic ‘30s jazz that zips and pops all over the place. Artwork by Lance Inkwell.

American Woman is a film about a woman who looks after her grandson when her daughter mysteriously disappears. It was directed by Ridley Scott’s son, Jake Scott and stars Sienna Miller, Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame and Christina Hendricks. As we are talking about the soundtrack here though, what you really need to know is that it was composed and performed by Adam Wiltzie, a founding member of Norman faves Stars of The Lid and A Winged Victory For The Sullen.

Susumu Hirasawa’s score for the 1997 anime classic Berserk makes it to vinyl for the first time courtesy of Tiger Labs. Like plenty of other late-90’s electronica, this selection is at once high-octane and yet strangely beatific. The combination of Taiwanese pop, noisy techno, post-minimalist classical composition and ambient synth work is rather lovely.

Snazzy picture disc vinyl edition of the soundtrack to the 1994 documentary Crumb concerning legendary cartoonist Robert Crumb.  The soundtrack begins with the artist musing on music and life before featuring several jazz and ragtime styled pieces featuring David Boeddinghaus and Craig Ventresco. Queen
Bohemian Rhapsody (The Original Soundtrack)

I’m probably right in thinking that Norman’s stance on Queen is that they’re crap [editorial note; it's not!].....[Actual Editor's Note: It is!] . Love ‘em or hate ‘em, though, it is undeniable that Freddie Mercury was a one-off and they don’t make music like anyone else. Here we have the soundtrack to the massively successful Bohemian Rhapsody, the film about Freddie Mercury and Queen. It’s a mix of previously released Queen songs and previously unreleased songs from their legendary Live Aid performance. Theme From The Gay Man's Guide To Safer Sex

The fact that this is Coil might lead you to assume that the title of Theme From The Gay Man’s Guide To Safer Sex is a joke of some sort, but it isn’t: this is music that Coil produced to accompany a VHS sex-ed documentary by that name. Ambient house, new age balearic vibes and slinking jazz are the order of the day. Ramin Djawadi
Game Of Thrones (Music from the HBO Series)

I tried to watch Episode one, season one of Game of Thrones but it was there I gave up, not particularly being a fan of dragons or graphic violence. Put me off my cornflakes I can tell you. What I did enjoy though was Ramin Djawadi's beautiful soundtrack work. The composer was already famous for Clash of the Titans and other myriad soundtrack work but here he comes into his own with great big billowing sounds of sorrow that perfectly capture of being hit by a sword in the depths of winter.

Alain Goraguer
La Planete Sauvage - Original Soundtrack

Long renowned as one of the most dazzling and original animated films to burst forth from the European quarter, Its soundtrack is actually as celebrated as the beloved film from 1973, Re-issued on wax by J Saul Kane's DC recordings around the Millennium and again a few years back, this is the latest definitive version from crate diggers extraordinaire Superior Viaduct. This OST is a wicked, groovesome soupçon of styles with the emphasis on funk, orchestral and astral tones to create a true 70's space-face classic. Sampled to hell for generations, make sure you bag this if you've not indulged previously. In this age of lavish soundtrack fetishism, there's a handful that truly ARE indispensible and work as well away from the movie as with it.

Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch
Twin Peaks: Season Two Music And More

Season Two of the original Twin Peaks season was a funny one. The TV execs wrested control away from David Lynch resulting in a goofy bastardised version of the show that never quite hit the highs of season one. No surprise then that the show's soundtrack (by Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti) was somewhat ostracised, only now receiving its first vinyl issue. That said, the music of season two was as engaging and enigmatic as the first. Little wonder noted season two hater David Lynch agreed to oversee this reissue.
