Iceage
Plowing Into The Fields Of Love

Copenhagen punk outfit Iceage's third studio album. Relying less than previously on straight-up guitars and classic punk abrasiveness, 'Plowing into the Fields of Love' sounds more well-rounded and introduces a fiddle / horn player, who apparently looks strange and has a beard. Which is important to know. This double vinyl LP (or shiny round CD) is home to lots of songs.

Haley Bonar
Last War

Alt-country-ish chanteuse Haley Bonar is back with a sixth album of wistful and widescreen singer-songwriter business, ably assisted by a backing band including folks who play with Bon Iver, Tapes 'n Tapes, Alpha Consumer and Andrew Bird. Expect breathy-voiced prettiness with slick Americana arrangements.

Electric Youth
Innerworld

If you've been following the world of film in the last 3 years, you will have heard Electric Youth's bittersweet single featuring College, 'A Real Hero', featured in 2011's Drive. On these Canadian's debut full length, they conjure up similarly emotional, 80s-inspired synthpop which would be right at home on a beach accompanying a cool pair of shades. Or as great neon lit night-time driving music according to Soundcloud commenters, so apparently a versatile record. But I digress - if you were a fan of the production and sweet vocals on 'A Real Hero', you'll be taken by Innerworld.

JAWS
Be Slowly

'Be Slowly' is the debut album from Birmingham-based indie/dream pop band Jaws. Taking their primary influences from early 90s shoegazers, the band swim in a sea of swirling fuzz, suppressed vocals and subtle melodies that nod towards Ride but also to acts like the Stone Roses. Jaws are devotional to guitar music at large, whether it's got a slacker vibe to it or barely decipherable amidst all the surface noise.

Pere Ubu
Lady From Shanghai

Thirty five years after their debut the Modern Dance, long running Cleveland OH mutant rockers Pere Ubu returned with Lady From Shanghai. As always the band were out to surprise listeners and this time the notoriously experimental collective were here to party. They revisited some of the electronic textures they had used in previous albums such as Cloudland invoking the spirit of Kraftwerk and (yes) disco.

Kontakte
These Machines

Shoegazers Kontakte come out of the woodwork for 'These Machines', their new eight track mini-record that covers two years of artistic processes. It's the follow-up to their recent 'Fear of Music' EP and finds them on their very own record label for the first time, which they have ambitiously -- and with lots of post-rock hand gestures -- titled The Collapse Of Everything.

Adebisi Shank
This Is The Third Album of a Band Called Adebisi Shank

While Adebisi Shank may be over, but their legacy lives on with this ace third album from the math-rock trio. Relentless, soaring, and quite a lot like a heavier version of winning on a Nintendo game, the band definitely went out on a high when they released this just before the split. Available on vinyl or CD.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything

180g LP audiophile pressing includes art poster + dl. CD in gatefold paperboard jacket. Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything is the first definitive document of the band's newfound sound and style as a quintet. It’s also their first single LP-length work since the band’s debut record as a trio almost 15 years ago, and features roadtested pummeling rock-outs “Fuck Off Get Free (For The Island Of Montréal)”, “Take Away These Early Grave Blues” and “What We Loved Was Not Enough” alongside the previously unheard lullabyes/minuets “Little Ones Run” and “Rains Thru The Roof At Thee Grande Ballroom (For Capital Steeze)” and the album centerpiece “Austerity Blues” with its closing lyric “Lord let my son live long enough to see that mountain torn down” sung in varying incarnations throughout the second half of this 14-minute epic. This lyric in many ways encapsulates Menuck's unflinching take on a world replete with shabbiness, greed and injustice, seen through the lens of parenthood, mortality, endurance and defiance.

Bear In Heaven
Time Is Over One Day Old

Bear In Heaven’s new album is aptly titled ‘Time Is Over One Day Old’. It’s a record with a visceral relationship to time and its processes. Where invulnerability and ambition can support you as you grow, at some point they become dead weight and being true to yourself means casting them off, starting anew. This plays out as a powerful analogy for the band across the arc of their career. They’ve always made intriguing records, here especially. It’s easy to see why musicians fall hard for this band. They entice and envelop you. Any ‘Bear In Heaven’ song will most likely greet you with a provocative beat, textural synthesizers and unassuming but adeptly supportive bass and guitar, all exquisitely arranged and glistening. Jon Philpot’s high, smooth, strong voice is so tightly wound into the music that it can be easy to overlook the lyrics, Bear In Heaven’s capacious third dimension. Philpot is a centre seeking, contemplative writer who captures the fleeting thoughts that underscore our emotional lives, the interactions with the world that are both difficult to express and anathema in daily conversation. Here Philpot and partner Adam Wills are more deeply collaborative than ever. This album is darker at times, louder than their others; it feels personal and direct. ‘If I Were To Lie’ places Wills’ bass groove front and centre, ‘Demon’ is riveting and propulsive in spite of its dark pointed lyric and ‘They Dream’ dissolves into three and a half minutes of deeply satisfying ambient synth work in its second half. Wills has always been the band’s anchor, providing rock solid, rhythmic bass lines and guitars that blur the boundaries of Philpot’s synth. Though in moments such as the final track ‘You Don’t Need The World’ Wills cuts through with an audacious, biting guitar hook. It’s a great culmination of the album’s sense of release. This album isn’t about being dark, it’s about releasing darkness and frustration.

Aerial M
Aerial M

Back in 1997 is was difficult to accept that Slint's Spiderland was already five years gone and that there'd be no follow up. Guitarist David Pajo had busied himself as session musician and collaborator with the likes of Tortoise and Stereolab but quietly he was squirrelling away the cyclical instrumentals that would make up the debut Ariel M album. It's a lovely thing....like a relaxed Slint or a quiet Mogwai and after being out of print for years should be snapped up pronto.

Brontide
Artery

As one of longest slow-burn artists on Pink Mist and Holy Roar, the glacial unravelling of Brontide has been a consistent, fascinating tease.  Following a momentum-stoking 12” single (‘Coloured Tongues’) and tours in America, Europe and the UK finally the band settled down to write and record ‘Artery’. In time honoured fashion we are now three years since the release of ‘Sans Souci’, and anticipation for music from this band is at fever pitch. If ‘Sans Souci’ was (as exemplified by its cover-art) dark and expansive, ‘Artery’ displays a classy, concise vibrancy. Kaleidoscopic in it’s evolution of sound for the band and in terms of new influences - shards of R’n’B and electronica are now beginning to show through - without ever deviating drastically away from their trademark math/instrumental rock sound.

Death And Vanilla
EP

Oh kind people at Fire Records, fresh from issuing Death and Vanilla's much loved second album 'Where the Wild Things Are' have now embarked on a re-issue programme of the bands earlier work including this now impossi-find debut EP. This was the record that first informed us that there could indeed be life after Broadcast. It now re-unleashed on blue vinyl for those who missed out first time round.
