Junkboy
Sovereign Sky

Brothers Mik and Rich Hanscomb live in Brighton and go under the name Junkboy.Their first album since 2010’s Koyo, Sovereign Sky is warm, melodic West Coast pop, evoking the sun that kisses the Californian coast, even if it doesn’t quite get as much action on the south coast of the UK. Vinyl LP on Enraptured.

Teho Teardo
Ballyturk

No Blixa Bargeld on this one (sorry Neubauten fans): this is a different kind of collaboration. Teho Teardo’s music on Ballyturk was written to accompany Enda Walsh’s play of the same name, meaning that, unlike 99% of what Norman stocks, this music has been played at the National Theatre! Electronics and strings enmesh to form an atmosphere of longing.

Skink
Distant Pale Horses

Skink's new EP is, as implied by its title, a work concerned with remoteness. It covers the gamut of our existence in time, meditates on the possible, and is up to scratch on its hidden equestrian subtext. Distant Pale Horses' noisy interludes will serve to prepare you for the dreams that can be had in between the clouds.

Githead
Waiting for a Sign

The fourth album from experimental indie supergroup Githead is more surprisingly melodic post-punk and rich, sunny instrumentation. Robin Rimbaud AKA Scanner mixes his experimental tendencies with the skills of Colin Newman from Wire and Malka Spigel and Max Franken of Minimal Compact. Improvised music has never sounded so immediate and memorable.

Obake
Mutations

Obake awoke one morning to discover they had turned into a giant cockroach. Or, alternatively, they decided to metamorphose metal into ambient and noise, further abstracting their sound from its original resources, and continuing to take one of the most extreme genres out of its shadowy confines. 'Mutations', their second record, proves them to be so much more than metal-heads, recalling acts like Sunn O))) in terms of their genre-twisted ambitions.

Singapore Sling
The Tower Of Foronicity

On their seventh record, Singapore Sling deliver a nice bout of shoegaze with deeply-sighed lyrics (because that's the only way you can be heard through feedback -- when your vocals sound like more of it) and yawning guitar riffs. 'The Tower Of Foronicity' continues the band's smoke-and-mirrors renaissance with little fuss but a lot of heart.

Grizzly Bear
Shields

Always good for a tune, old Grizzly Bear. The New Yorkers had a point to prove on ‘Shields’ – after all, this 2012 LP was the first full-length that the band released since their 2009 LP ‘Veckatimest’ pushed them into the upper-echelons of the alternative rocksphere. Mind you, if Grizzly Bear were feeling the pressure then they didn't show it here, pooling their considerable songwriting resources to come up with another set of harmonious indie-rock anthems.

Black Clouds
Dreamcation

The thick-fogged Black Clouds meld together the heavy, screeching post-metal of acts like Isis with the more plaintive avenues of your average post-rock twinkle sweethearts, making for a sound that flirts with the sinister and ominous before giving way to something wide-eyed and aspirational. Furious noise meets ambient wash on 'Dreamcation', a record that rivals Deafheaven's 'Sunbather' for extracting beauty in the face of brute force.

Radiohead
The King Of Limbs

'The King Of Limbs' was Radiohead's eighth album released in 2011 and saw the band again doing what they do quite well which is vaguely unsettling experimental rock with electronics, beats and a high pitched whinny on top. Here, they added sampling and loops to their repertoire on an album that was more of an insidious creep than the previous more hurried 'In Rainbows'. Another worthwhile effort from a band who don't do bad music.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums
Rhythm

An office favourite and the promo has only been in the place a week. It has since disappeared into various homes for night listening which is as good a recommendation as you can get. Therefore I'm the wrong person to write the press blurb as I was the only one to spit the words "experimental Winehouse" in it's direction. It certainly sounds like the career defining record that the press release talks about, based around the primal rhythms and soulful vocals of the Swedish husband and wife team it hold no punches whatsoever. Certainly fans of Neneh Cherry's last album, or the 80's pounding of Pigbag or ESG are going to find much to enjoy.

These New Puritans
Expanded (Live At The Barbican)

These New Puritans pushed the boundaries of their music with one of the most unexpected and singular releases of 2013, ‘Field of Reeds’. Melding classical and experimental compositions, ‘Field of Reeds’ was a bold and ambitious accomplishment amongst a derivative musical landscape. ‘Expanded (Live at the Barbican)’ is an opportunity to hear one of the most unique albums of recent times live. Also featured are reworked songs both old and new, all played with the impressive inclusion of the Heritage Orchestra and Synergy Vocals.

MONO
The Last Dawn

Stripping their sound back from the grandiose orchestral pomp of their recent albums, Japanese post-rockers Mono return this week with two separate single LPs rather than their usual double. 'The Last Dawn' and 'Rays Of Darkness' explore the opposing themes of light and dark, joy and pain, with 'The Last Dawn' perhaps unsurprisingly being the lighter of the two, taking its cues from shoegaze and minimalist film scores.

Lukas Creswell-Rost
Go Dream

Lukas Cresswell-Rost was formerly part of Leeds post rock twiddlers The Pattern Theory but having relocated to Berlin is pursuing a much different oeuvre with this album of polished 80's sophisti-pop. Opener 'Foreign Movies' has some serious Prefab Sprout moves, 'Ten Dollar Cocktails' goes even further and I hasten to mention Phil Collins. A bad thing? No, not really. not loads of people are doing this kind of thing and there are plenty of things on here Field Music may consider messing with and we all like a bit of '80's don't we?

Noveller
No Dreams

Sarah Lipstate's got a new Noveller album coming out! 'No Dreams' has eight new tracks of her smudgy ethereal ambient pop full of sleepy drones and yawning trails of gleaming guitar noise, inspired by the artist's struggles to distinguish between reality and hallucination in the moments between sleep and awakening.
