Salem's Pot
Pronounce This!

You can’t really see the faces of Salem’s Pot under their masks on that sleeve art, but they can see you… It's the perfect image for this Swedish gang of splatter-horror movie obsessives: a spooky threat but with a rich undertow of campy fun. That vibe flows through the hard-acid-rock of Pronouce This!, a funtime throwback to heavy guitar times of old. On RidingEasy.

Seasick Steve & The Level Blues
Cheap

This is the very first album from everyone’s favourite (presumably-former?) hobo bluesman Seasick Steve, recorded in 2004 with a pair of Scandinavians (The Level Devils). Cheap sounds cheap, but it's also full of heart and soul and gnarly guitar, presented raw and unadulterated. Reissued by There’s A Dead Skunk on CD and vinyl.

P.R.O.
Blacky Joe

People Rock Outfit were a Nigerian garage-rock band, and Blacky Joe was their only album. Sparse and funky afro-rock, with enough groove that they were able to act as Jimmy Cliff during a Nigerian tour. Apparently, original pressings of this 1976 album are so rare as to virtually not exist, so this Soundways reissue is really doing the world a service. 1000 vinyl copies.

David Bowie
Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (The Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture is the video documentation of the legendary final gig of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust period: the one where he surprised everyone, including The Spiders From Mars, by closing the whole thing down. Needless to say, it's a pretty special show, and the soundtrack audio is presented here on 2 LPs.

Girl Sweat
Bad Happenings

Who needs garage-rock when you can have garage-noise? If it’s messy, blasted-out fun-time vibes you want, go straight for Girl Sweat, who utilises a lap steel, some synths and drum machines, and some howled / hollered vocals, all squeezed through stacks of distortion and echo. Bad Happenings is the debut full-length, and it’s out on Box Records.

The Parrots
Los Ninos Sin Miedo

The Parrots are a Madrid band of psychedelic garage-men, and Los Ninos Sin Miedo is their debut album. That chunky orange 70’s-style lettering on the old-school sleeve art is pretty indicative of the band’s sound, where a thick low-end groove drives along big, cool-guy lashings of guitar. Out on Heavenly.

Thee Oh Sees
Live In San Francisco

Thee banner garage rawk band played the Chapel out in San Francisco, launching their happy-go-lucky psychedelia into a crowd of possibly stoned hopefuls. This extensive set is presented not only as audio but in DVD format with photos to boot. Musically, it scales more towards their propulsive, loud, noisy side -- but the Oh Sees have so many songs I'd expect you'll feel a little bit of everything.

Mrs Magician
Bermuda

Mrs. Magician’s second album Bermuda is a particularly energetic (even if lyrically heavy) piece of pop-punk. Kind of fuzzy and noisy, but also kind of sleek-sounding. Released on Swami Records, the imprint of the Drive Like Jehu / Rocket From The Crypt dude of the same (nick)name, who also produced the album.

Prix
Historix

Prix are a lesser-known band that came about when members of later-period Big Star shot off on their own. Historix is a set of ferocious mid-70’s rock music, packed with riffs and flaring vocals. Barely any of this material has been widely heard: 2 singles released at the time and a Japanese CD release 15 years ago is all the attention it has received. So praise due to the efforts of HoZac Archival.

The Royal Sitars
Eloise / Distant and Vague

Royal Headache are an Australian band who play proper rock music, with proper guitars and proper haircuts. But no guitars here… For on this single, The Royal Sitars perform sitar versions of 2 Headache tunes, Eloise / Distant and Vague. I’m not quite sure why… But sitar sounds are always welcome. 500 copies of this 7”, on Agitated.

The Fuzztones
Salt For Zombies

The Fuzztones resurrect their 2003 album Salt For Zombies for Easy Action. Good old-fashioned garage rock music like you might hear in the dive bar of your fantasies: plenty of organ and plenty of throaty vocals, including from The Seeds’ Sky Saxon on 1 track. The (coloured) vinyl edition has a bonus 7” of an Alice Cooper cover thrown in for good measure.

Night Beats
Who Sold My Generation

Night Beats are a trio who have apparently been hibernating in some kind of hemp cupboard since 1969, which is to say that they sound precisely like the psychedelic rock overlords of that era. Nothing wrong with that of course, especially when the music is dispatched with such verve. Third album Who Sold My Generation is out on Heavenly Recordings

The Jayhawks
Paging Mr. Proust

The Jayhawks deserve legendary status. Their fusion of alt. Country, power pop and laid back sing-a-longs has been delighting fans for 31 years now. Paging Mr Proust is their 9th studio album and first since 2011’s Mockingbird Time. For this release, the band return to their classic line-up of Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Tim O’Reagan and Karen Grotberg. The album is produced by none other than REM's Peter Buck.

David Bowie
ChangesOneBowie

ChangesOneBowie was the first David Bowie retrospective to be released and contained his best material from 1969 - 1976. It is reissued on vinyl and CD to mark the 40th anniversary of its original release. The compilation highlights how, in just seven years, Bowie was able to reinvent his sound and style several times.

Seratones
Get Gone

Seratones hail from Louisiana, but have wide-ranging ambitions. On Get Gone, which is their debut full-length album, they pull in the finest influences from the surrounding regions, leading to songs that are soulful, jazzy and bluesy all at the same time, not to mention the garage-heat of their riffs. Nice. Out on Fat Possum.

Ilian
Love Me Crazy

Ilian’s Love Me Crazy is a lovely piece of 70’s guitar rock songwriting, and one that has been almost lost to the world due to its out of print nature. But this Anthology Recordings reissue (the first authorised by the artist) solves that problem, opening up the free-flowing vibes (the album was recorded quickly and keenly) to new listeners. CD or LP editions.

A Giant Dog
Pile

A Giant Dog are a Texas outfit who boldly bring back the glory days of glam rock, splashing sequins and sparkles all over the place with their riff-centric boogies. Plus, lyrics that can be favourably compared to Sparks! Pile is their third full-length, and you know what? It sounds like they are on a roll. Released by Merge.

White Denim
Stiff

White Denim’s high-energy garage/indie hybrid has always been built on loops developed in extensive jams. Stiff pushes this even further, in fact, making the songs looser than ever before. There’s bluesy riffing, weird little rockabilly breakdowns and a general experimental motivation to include whatever sounds good.

Big Star
Complete Columbia: Live at University of Missouri

In one of the more surprising moves of the '90's former Box Top and professional grump since 1976 Alex Chilton was persuaded to reform his classic early '70s power pop band Big Star. The two surviving/interested members were joined by crazy haired Seattle two-some the Posies. This collection is the complete recording of their set at University of Missouri and includes run throughs of many of their ignored at the time but now popular numbers as well as nicely a take on fallen Big Star comrade Chris Bell's 'I Am the Cosmos'.  This is the first time the complete set has been released.

James Luther Dickinson & North Mississippi Allstars
I'm Just Dead, I'm Not Gone

James Luther Dickinson was a blues hero of the American South, his songs carrying the grit of proper blues along with the rolling sway of rock’n’roll. And his band, the North Mississippi Allstars, are the ideal accompaniment. I’m Not Dead, I’m Just Gone documents a live show from 2006, and it sounds like a raucous evening all round.
