Mikal Cronin
Mikal Cronin

Mikal Cronin would later to go onto fairly well known things but at the time of his self titled debut he was simply known as the guy from surf punks the Moonhearts. His solo work would take its influence from classic era 60s songwriters such as Harry Nilsson and Del Shannon charting a melodic path towards chiming guitar rock. Produced by Ty Segall and featuring John Dwyer, his debut now gets the re-issue treatment from Trouble in Mind.

Drive-By Truckers
The Unraveling

Great news for readers of Uncut magazine....there's a new Drive By Truckers album in town. The magazine's flagship band haven't released a record in three years which is a long time for them but leader Patterson Hood has been struggling with writers block brought on with worrying about how to convey the very mess the world is in. Thankfully he started to look closer to home, to matters of the heart for inspiration and found that his band were at the peak of their powers on an album that mixes the politics with the personal.

The Raconteurs
Broken Boy Soldiers

Looking somewhat like the Cardiacs on the sleeve are Jack White's the Raconteurs. This is the project that he collaborated on songwriting with power pop mainstay Brendan Benson. The duo met up initially to just write one song but kept on at it and a full band formed just like that. This re-issue comes with a copper embossed gatefold jacket you lucky, lucky people.

The Velvet Underground
Loaded

Loaded was the fourth and penultimate album by The Velvet Underground and the last one to feature any of the original members, most notably, Lou Reed. It is, of course, an absolute classic and should be owned by anyone who has ever expressed even a passing interest in music. It features such greats as Sweet Jane and Rock & Roll.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Yes all of those first three please finishing off with a little Paul Daniels. This was the Red Hot Chili Peppers fifth record originally released in 1989 and the first to see the band start to crossover to mainstream success. It toned down the metal riffs of their previous Mothers Milk LP and contained their first hit with the unusually quiet and reflective Under the Bridge.

David Bowie
Space Oddity (Tony Visconti 2019 Mix)

A brand new mix from original producer Tony Visconti to commemorate the 50th anniversary of David Bowie’s second self-titled album, later re-issued as Space Oddity in 1972. With the title track introducing ‘Major Tom’, one of Bowie’s most enduring characters, it didn’t do much business at the time but is now regarded as a critical turning point in his career. This new release also features the title track of the brand new box-set release, Conversation Piece.

The White Stripes
White Blood Cells

White Blood Cells was the third album by brother/sister duo (whaaaat? hang on...no) ok from ex couple duo Jack and Meg White as the White Stripes. After their two previous albums started making waves across the sweaty clubs of the UK this was the first one to really break through and features such future classics as Hotel Yorba and Fell In Love With A Girl. Still sounding as fresh as a daisy, it's a further reminder that Jack White's music was so much better when constricted by Meg's rudimentary but intuitive drumming.

The Beatles
Revolver

Revolver by The Beatles is regarded by many as their best album. It’s the second album they made after giving up playing live and the use of studio trickery really began to enhance their concise pop. Originally released in 1966, it’s fair to say that this changed the shape of everything that came after it and is still doing so. Remastered 180g audiophile vinyl on Parlophone.

Iggy Pop
Lust For Life

Iggy’s second solo album came hot on the heels of the similarly Bowie-produced, but stylistically very different The Idiot (both 1977). With the Sales brothers on bass and drums and Carlos Alomar and Ricky Gardiner on guitars, this is much more of a rock album, but one that doesn’t at all resemble the Stooges. The title track and The Passenger are now almost omnipresent, but the record is full of delights - sleazy (Sixteen), daft (Success), or somewhere between comical and emotionally devastating (Turn Blue).

The Velvet Underground & Nico
The Velvet Underground & Nico

What is left to say about this classic? The record that pretty much kicked off everything that became indie, alternative, dream-pop, punk, new-wave or what have you. And from a band who were semi-manufactured by svengali Andy Warhol who added sultry chanteuse Nico to the line up and made all kinds of suggestions. Despite that it's the originality of Lou Reed's songs that endure as well as their experimental and diverse method of music making.

Parquet Courts
Light Up Gold

Parquet Courts back when we thought they'd only have one name and stick to it. Press release says this is their debut wikipedia says different but whatever, it was something of a revelation on release, the pre-press on What's Your Rupture gaining the band a deservedly larger fan base who quickly got sucked into their late '70s-style garage rock and new wave.

Iggy and The Stooges
Death Trip

Don't know what Iggy is doing on that cover art but the chairs gone over and he's made a bit of a mess. Death Trip wasn't an official Iggy and the Stooges album but a collection of recordings of rehearsals leading up to their debut Raw Power. If some of the recordings sound suspiciously like the album versions then... well it's still a tantalising document of there the band were at in '73.

Thee Oh Sees
Sucks Blood

Nice selling point in that this is the first black vinyl re-press of Thee Oh Sees seventh album in many years. Bugger all that coloured vinyl nonsense eh? We want the original and best vinyl colour. Produced by pop person Kelley Stolz it was the first record released on their own imprint Castle Face and is as usual jammed full of their psych rock and garage experiments.

Television
Adventure

You might think that Television only made one album such is the lordation given to 'Marquee Moon'. This is their second album which, its safe to say, didn't do quite as well at the time both critically and commercially. It has a softer more layered sound which has more of a 60's West Coast vibe and could easily be seen to influence the nascent REM. Verlaine's voice is still as wiry and ragged but this sweeter side of Television should not be overlooked.  Long awaited vinyl re-issue on Rhino.

Headland
What Rough Beast

Australian surf music collective, Headland, make a rare foray into the world of song with What A Rough Beast. The band usually play instrumental music but here have found inspiration from installing dishwashers, faces in the sky, blood-filled footballs and how lizards feel about things for their lyrics. Not your run of the mill subjects, but no doubt all the better for it.

Graham Parker
Nixon's Rules

A busy 2019 for cult English singer-songwriter Graham Parker wraps up with the release of a new 7” single on 100% Records. Referring to the barely disguised prejudice behind the erstwhile U.S. president’s ‘war on drugs’ policy, ‘Nixon’s Rules’ rails against the shameful state of the UK’s narcotics policy. The flip-side contains an extended version of the same track.

Furthermore, it includes discs to mark the 50th anniversaries of the release of the ‘Space Oddity’ single plus his second studio album David Bowie (later re-released as Space Oddity, of course. Iggy Pop
The Idiot

The Idiot was Iggy Pop's first post the Stooges album and the one Dame David Bowie had a huge hand in by co-writing and producing. It had a dark electronic sound not dissimilar to Bowie's Berlin trilogy albums. It was a huge influence on the likes of Depeche Mode and Joy Division and it was the last record Ian Curtis listened to just before he took his own life.

The Young Sinclairs
Out Of The Box

Virginia band The Young Sinclairs are a four-piece led by Sam Lumsford. They use a starting point ‘60s folk rock, Madchester, C86 and Paisley Underground influenced sounds but claim to be a rock ‘n’ roll band first and foremost. Out Of The Box is an album that, as the title suggests, refuses to be tied down to any genre, there’s a whole mix of sounds going on here.

Richard Hawley
Richard Hawley

This is Richard's Hawley's first solo album after a varied carreer in Pulp, Longpigs and others. The story goes that Hawley was sat backstage strumming one of his lovely songs when he was overheard by John Power out of Cast who said something like "what the fook are you doing with those set of bell ends when you should be doing this" or words to that effect. The rest is history. This is lovely stuff, I preferred Hawley like this when he was he made things sparse. It has a wonderful Northern working mans club feel. Something you'd sing on the way home from sinking 5 pints of Trophy, staggering into the rain, back home to a nice wife.

Richard Hawley
Lowedges

Richard Hawley's soft but always commanding voice is the centrepiece of 'Lowedges', a record of gentle, carefully crafted chamber pop that brings together Wilco-esque drumming, country twang and an almost ambient approach to making rock 'n' roll. With his brooding and crooning, along with all the musicians ornamenting him, Hawley recalls artists such as Bill Fay.

Neil Young
After The Gold Rush

Neil’s 1970 masterpiece is sublimely balanced. The lonesome piano stoner anthem of the title track, the eerie / uplifting Don’t Let It Bring you Down, Only Love Can Break Your Heart’s hippy wisdom, a pair of Crazy Horse rockers, and a few weepies. There’s not a song here that wouldn’t be an essential setlist inclusion for most artists, but this is Neil we’re talking about. Hence the charming miniatures Cripple Creek Ferry and Til the Morning Comes are relatively overlooked and Tell Me Why rarely gets a live airing. The recent remaster was a revelation and best of all on vinyl.

Beach Slang
The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City

Those who have listened to Beach Slang before will know that their music is influenced by The Replacements. New album The Deadbeat Bang of Heartbreak City features former Replacements bass player Tommy Stinson which front man James Alex regards as a bit of a coup. The perfect player for his punk-cum-power-pop sound. The album was produced by Brad Wood who has worked with just about everyone at one time or another.

Black Lips
Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart

Fire Records presents the ninth studio album from Atlantan garage rockers Black Lips, now veterans of the scene despite their notoriously riotous on-stage antics, vomiting and all. Barbed and vicious, Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart shows the band haven’t necessarily matured with age, but merely become more aware of the world around them.

Crime
Murder By Guitar

No good rock 'n' rollers with a punk attitude, Crime were a San Francisco band made famous by their 1976 single, "Hot Wire My Heart". 'Murder By Guitar' is a compilation of the early, snarling singles that caught the attention of San Fran, as well as nine tunes they recorded around the same time. There's a song on here called "Piss On Your Dog", which in title alone is indicative of the kind of band Crime were.

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band
Clear Spot

Don Van Vliet’s reputation mostly rests on the mind-bending knottiness of Troutmaskreplica and similar work, but he could also dial down the weird and dial up the blues. 1972’s Clear Spot is his most successful attempt to nail a compromise between groove-driven blues rock and his inimitable creative eccentricities. There’s the title track’s swamp eco-blues, the Stax soul of Too Much Time, the acid rock rush of Sun Zoom Spark, and a couple of delicate psychedelic love songs. Still plenty of surreal tomfoolery afoot, like Zoot Horn Rollo’s slide showpiece Big-Eyed Beans from Venus, and those Little Golden Birdies - look at them! A good entry point into the Beefheart universe on 180g vinyl.

Neil Young
Harvest Moon

Ah Harvest Moon. Like Bat out Hell 2, it's a key example of how an artist going back to an original blueprint can reap dividends. The Beatles
Rubber Soul

Rubber Soul by The Beatles, released in 1965,  was the follow-up to Help! And, therefore, the second album of theirs to consist entirely of original material. By this time, the band had given up touring and were able to focus all of their energies on recording in the studio. The results are bloody marvelous.

Retro rocker JD McPherson decided to take out all the detritus most musicians put in when making a Christmas record. That meant no sleigh bells and no cheesy cover versions. Instead, 2018's SOCKS was classic vintage rock and roll with a holiday theme and now you can buy a 'Snow Globe' 7" containing one of the album's highlights Holly, Carol, Candy & Joy plus an unreleased track Red Bows (For A Blue Girl).

Orange

A re-issue for Orange, the fourth studio album from garage/blues revivalists Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Originally released in 1994, and fronted by the scintillating single ‘Bellbottoms’, which played such a prominent part in the movie Baby Driver recently, the album received plenty of acclaim for its brilliantly unhinged delivery.

The Cramps
Flamejob

I hold The Cramps personally responsible for my introduction to evil music and I've never forgiven them. They had one of the most iconic sounds in rock and roll. Lux's almost otherwordly vocals and Ivy's razor wire guitar lines are unmistakeable, even as late as their sixth studio album 'Flamejob'. This album, released in 1994, shows The Cramps in fine fettle. This reissue comes with a gorgeous red and yellow swirl coloured vinyl as well as an insert.

Der-ner-ner derrrr ner-ner-ner, on Broooooadwaaaaay! Unfortunately this new collection from The Boss doesn’t feature a cover of the classic ‘60s paean to Manhattan, but Springsteen On Broadway makes up for it by featuring plenty of Bruce. Taped at his 2017-2018 run at NYC’s Walter Kerr Theatre, this collection is a masterful retrospective from a man ageing more gracefully than most. Springsteen chats and croons his way through some of his hits from down the years. Occasionally his wife Patti Scialfa turns up to accompany him.

Ah what would we do without the Brian Jonestown Massacre. We'd have two or three fewer records to sell per week that's what we'd do. The latest is a re-issue of their 1997 record Give it Back. Bob Chance
It's Broken

The classic privately-pressed record re-issued for no other reason that it's pretty darn interesting. Bob Chance self released this in 1980 and seemed to be trying to make something somewhere between Bob Hope and Giorgio Moroder but what comes out is a kind of repetitive Arthur Russell-in-disco-mode slab of lo-fi pulse. As eccentric as it comes and just look at that sleeve...and those arms!

Jonathan Fire*Eater
Tremble Under Boom Lights

Jonathan Fire*Eater were the nearly people of '90s indie rock. They began the sound that eventually would eventually make stars out of the likes of the Strokes and Interpol i.e dark and dangerous New York City cool with all the right influences (the Stooges, the Cramps, Nick Cave). It never quite happened for them but a man in Detroit was listening to them. A man named Jack who now has his own record label and so here is a re-issue of their 1996 extended play now with bonus added track.

The Kinks
Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)

While it was met with confusion on its original release in late 1969, The Kinks’ seventh studio album Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) aged incredibly well and is now regarded as a masterwork. To mark its 50th anniversary, BMG is releasing a lavish box set containing four CDs, four 7” singles, softback book featuring essays and interviews, printed memorabilia and enamel badge. Essentially, the final word on one of the Sixties’ most distinctive records.

Glorius Barsteds

Sometimes Australians couldn't give a Castlemaine XXXX for refined music. What they want is beer-sodden garage rock played at terrifying volumes in terrifying pubs. Cosmic Psychos fitted the bill perfectly a raggle-taggle collective who emerged in 1985 playing unpretentious pub punk. This is their 2011 album re-issued on blue vinyl by Burger records.

The mother of Eddie Piller, founder of Acid Jazz, was responsible for the original Small Faces fan club, so I guess Acid Jazz releasing music by Small Faces is the holy grail for them. 75 Dollar Bill
Wood / Metal / Plastic / Pattern / Rhythm / Rock

No, 75 Dollar Bill. That's not how you play Tetris. It doesn't even work on paper. Anyway, this is a duo-plus-quintet of people who got together to play such instruments as wood, plastic, and rhythm, making an interesting music that isn't confined to any singular global scene, but definitely sounds like a chamber version of Goat. Long, dusty jams for your eternal journey.

Queen
Bohemian Rhapsody (The Original Soundtrack)

I’m probably right in thinking that Norman’s stance on Queen is that they’re crap [editorial note; it's not!].....[Actual Editor's Note: It is!] . Love ‘em or hate ‘em, though, it is undeniable that Freddie Mercury was a one-off and they don’t make music like anyone else. Here we have the soundtrack to the massively successful Bohemian Rhapsody, the film about Freddie Mercury and Queen. It’s a mix of previously released Queen songs and previously unreleased songs from their legendary Live Aid performance. You also get the bonus of the 20th Century Fox fanfare being played in Brian May’s signature guitar style. The press release bangs on about sales achieved in Q4 - when did it stop being about the music, man? Double Heavyweight Vinyl LP on Virgin EMI.

The Vacant Lots
Exit EP

The Vacant Lots recorded the 'Exit EP' with Anton Newcombe from the Brian Jonestown Massacre while they had a few days off tour in 2017. Newcombe put in some real work for 'Exit' - he plays most of the instruments on ‘Bells’, for one. It’ll come as no surprise, then, to find out that 'Exit' has a strong whiff of the BJM’s about it. Rock ‘n’ roll is back baby. It’s good again. Awoouu.

The White Stripes
Elephant

Elephant was the big one for Detroit blues rock duo the White Stripes following on the pretty big in itself White Blood Cells. They decamped to the all analogue Toe Rag studios in London to record it in all old fashioned stylee and came out with a masterpiece. Everyone with ears has heard if not sung along to its opening track Seven Nation Army but the remainder of the album is pretty good too.

White Reaper
You Deserve Love

A first major-label release for Louisville-based quintet White Reaper, who’ve been doggedly carving out a name for themselves in the alternative rock scene over the last five years, an ascendancy that has seen them support The Killers. You Deserve Love is the group’s third studio album overall, and arrives on CD and green coloured vinyl.

GA-20
Lonely Soul

GA-20 love the blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll. Their love for this music has seen them create authentic, raw sounding roots music that they felt was missing from the modern world. Lonely Soul is built on the solid foundations laid by Lazy Lester, J.B. Lenoir, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Junior Wells.

The New Testament

Dirty Water’s latest compilation The New Testament seems single-handedly dedicated to keeping the primal, destructive thrills of rock’n’roll alive, collecting six bands from countries ranging from France to Japan and inviting them to contribute a brand new track as well as a golden oldie. On Dirty Water.

LAHS

After a solo run out under the name Paint, Pedrum Siadatian returns to the womb that bore him, i.e. Allah-Lahs. LAHS is the band’s fourth album. There’s a palpable togetherness about this album, but their sun-bleached melodies and soft psychedelia remain at their core. On Mexican Summer.

Jim Jones (Thee Hypnotics, the Jim Jones Revue etc) and pals return with a slab of explosive garage rock and one of the most popular racket slices played on their recent tour. Get Down Get With It has already been a hit for such legends as Little Richard and Slade and is a call to arms to stop moping in the corner about the state of the world and get your feet on the dancefloor. Fabienne Delsol
Four

The functionally-titled fourth album from the brilliant Fabienne Delsol sparkles with ‘60s garage-rock throwback aesthetics and timeless pop sensibilities. Produced by the French star alongside Luke Oldfield and Toerag studios, original music and inspired cover versions share equal billing on Four.

The Beatles
Abbey Road – 50th Anniversary Edition

Absolutely everything about The Beatles’ final album Abbey Road screams ‘iconic’ - the much-parodied artwork, the second half’s famous song suite, the top class contributions from all of the Fab Four (yes, even Ringo’s ‘Octopus’s Garden’...). In 2019, it gets the 50th anniversary re-mastering treatment. With the new stereo mix handled by Giles Martin at the famous itself, this re-issue comes in: standard CD; double CD; single, double or triple vinyl; or a lavish 4xCD box-set with hardcover book and Blu-Ray. Various versions include outtakes and demos.

Thee Oh Sees
Carrion Crawler / The Dream

He never stops does he? This was Thee Oh Sees 2011 album originally culled from two planned EPs (hence the double header). Possibly because of that it's a little longer than the usual Oh Sees output clocking in at a near progressive rock 40 minutes. It was recorded pretty much live to tape and exudes a sound that John Dwyer himself describes as pummel and throb.

David Bowie
Station To Station

The records of the great  David Bowie live on, with several of reissues on Parlophone. 1976’s Station To Station is an entirely crucial piece of the Bowie canon, combining the funky soul he’d just be exploring with the German experimentalism he was about to dive headlong into. The ‘Thin White Duke’ returns on CD and 180g vinyl LP.

The Fat White Family
Champagne Holocaust

They are so nice, Giving the Quietus the perfect opportunity to align themselves with what they see as the underclass are Fat White Family. A bunch of drug addled, diseased attention seekers with just enough repetitive riffs and churning glam inspired songs to just about get by. Champagne Holocaust was their Oasis referencing debut that showcased their skills in the area of publicity stunts just as much as they did with their ability to produce scuzzy underground garage rock.

The Beatles
Let It Be

The Beatles last hurrah was the long gestating 'Let It Be' album. Actually conceived as a project before the recording of their penultimate album Abbey Road, various inter band squabbles and the temporary departure of George Harrison meant that it wasn't finished by 1970 at which point Phil Spector had been drafted in to slather strings all over it. Not particularly valued on release, it has gained traction over the years most likely when listeners realised the sort of music the four members would make solo.

Starcrawler
Devour You

Starcrawler’s well received self-titled debut, showed a band starting out and perhaps didn’t capture what the band really do. For their second album, Devour You, they’ve hired producer Nick Launay, who has worked with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, L7 and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. He was able to capture the essence of their live shows, albeit without making anyone bleed or breaking anyone's fingers, and help the band make a follow-up with a harder edge.

The Mystery Lights
Thick Skin / In The Darkness

It's all change in the world of New Yorkers the Mystery Lights as they move out of the 60s into the hip and happening 70s for this latest record.  The group's no-wave sound and big backbeat are said to bring to mind older purveyors of the darker side of life such as MC5 and the more experimental side of the Velvet Underground.

King Of The Road

Available on double vinyl LP on At the Dojo. Reissue of Fu Manchu’s sixth studio album that was originally released in 1999. Television
The Blow-Up

Recorded at CBGBs in 1978 The Blow Up is a double live LP of Television at their most raw and fiery. It sees the babd rip through songs from their classic Marquee Moon and a couple from follow up Adventure in a manner capturing a spontaneity perhaps lacking on the albums. The improvised passages and extended version of Bob Dylan's Knocking on Heaven's Door are electric. Essential listening.

Fleetwood Mac
Rumours

Who hasn't heard this before? Well if you haven't then you are in for a treat. It's one of the biggest selling albums of all time and the reason why is because it is soft rock hit after soft rock hit. Most of these songs were FM radio smashes but the album has a dark lyrical undertone as the band's internal dynamic was..um..complicated to say the least. If you haven't already picked this up for 10p at your local car boot sale then we have a new Clear vinyl edition.

King Salami and The Cumberland Three
Kiss My Ring

Ooph...rude! Oh that kind of ring. This is London garage rockers King Salami's fourth full length record. You may remember them from television's UK's Best Part Time Band where they showcased their ability to rework 50s and 60s blues and garage influence for modern ears. The Cumberland Three are ex members of the Parkinsons and together they blast out sweaty riotous music that recalls the Mummies, the Trashmen and Bo Diddley. Put on your dancing shoes right now.

Thee Oh Sees
Floating Coffin

Which one is this then? It seems it was the fourteenth album from the endless splurge of creativity that comes from the noggin' of John Dwyer and his Thee Oh Sees friends. Released in 2013 the album was more of a group effort than earlier discs, heavy and dark it contained matched their garage rock racket with quieter, more reflective moments.

GospelbeacH
Let It Burn

Thank God for that capital H or I'd be mixing them up with all the other things named Gospelbeach out there. This GospelbeacH is the pet project of Brent Rademaker of Beechwood Sparks and other Los Angeles curiosities alongside late, lamented guitarist Neal Casal. They play sunshine soaked West Coast rock something along the lines of Gram Parsons full of rich harmonies and twangy guitar solos.

Iggy Pop
New values

New Values by Iggy Pop was originally released in 1979. It was his third solo album and first album of his post-Stooges ouvre, apart from Raw Power, not to feature any input from David Bowie. Nevertheless, this is a bit of classic featuring tracks such as Five Foot One and I’m Bored.

Genesis
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was the sixth album by Genesis and was originally released in November 1974. It was a concept album telling the story of a boy who lived on the streets. Whilst the concept wasn’t that far-reaching, the six-month long tour that followed was one of the most ostentatious in rock history - Peter Gabriel really went for it. This is an album you need to make time for, sit down and listen to the whole thing at once, not something you can simply dip into. Reissue 180g vinyl LP on Virgin/EMI.

Liam Gallagher
Now That I’ve Found You

Now That I’ve Found You is a single taken from Liam Gallagher’s second solo album, Why Me? Why Not? It sounds kinda like Oasis with a bit more of a ‘60s jangle. No doubt the chorus will have fans singing along at gigs, whether he reaches his dream of playing to massive fields of people or whether they’re just in medium-sized venues.

Wild Billy Childish & CTMF
Last Punk Standing

Last Punk Standing is the new album by Wild Billy Childish and CTMF. Artist, poet and musician, Childish is a legend of the Kent garage rock scene and has been making music with numerous bands since the late ‘70s. Last Punk Standing features a guest performance from the late Mark E. Smith, which must be one of his last ever appearances on record.

Classic rock doesn’t come much more classic than an album that features Purple Haze, Hey Joe and The Wind Cries Mary. The Jimi Hendrix Experience (the band that featured none other that Jimi Hendrix on guitar and vocals) announced themselves to the world with their debut Are You Experienced in 1967 and blew the socks off everyone that heard it. Olivia Jean
Night Owl

Olivia Jean sounds more like an algorithmically-generated Third Man Records artist than an actual human who Jack White brought into the fold (and, if the rumours are to be believed, was romantically involved with at one point). But hey ho, I guess the man who probably gets his friends to all call him Spooky Johnny Depp has a nose for a signing too. ‘Night Owl’ is the first single from Jean’s upcoming LP of the same name, and the girl-group-indebted garage-surf tune is indeed a fine bit of Third Manitude. This 7” release of the track comes backed with Jean’s cover of the Bollywood classic ‘Jaan Pehechaan Ho’.

The Rolling Stones
Let It Bleed (50th Anniversary Edition)

Let It Bleed is one of the very best albums by The Rolling Stones. It is bookended by the classic songs Gimme Shelter and You Can’t Always Get What You Want and features the blues/rock centrepiece Midnight Rambler. It was released in 1969, in between Beggars Banquet (1968) and Sticky Fingers (1971). An album from a magical period in the band’s history is getting a 50th anniversary makeover as a luxurious box set, standard LP and CD.

Iggy & The Stooges
Raw Power

It's called 'Raw Power', but much of the conversation around this seminal punk rock record from Iggy Pop & The Stooges is about its recording. Originally mastered by David Bowie, it got the remaster treatment from Iggy himself just over a decade ago, showing off both's approach to these ferocious songs. Both are available on this reissue from Music On Vinyl, but concentrate on the songs, yeah?

The Modern Lovers
The Modern Lovers

The Modern Lovers was the debut album from Jonathan Richman's band of the same name and was an immediate critical and commercial success. It's opening track Roadrunner was an instant classic and is now deservedly iconic but there are nine more post Velvet Underground pre-punk tracks to dig into. The album influenced scores of musicians including the Sex Pistols and Talking Heads and paved the way for the subsequent punk and new-wave movements.

The Hussy
Looming

The Hussy a decade old trash-punk band straight outta Madison Wisconsin who have put a slew of their chaotic garage rock out on a variety of labels. Looming is their first album since founding members Bobby Hussy and Heather Hussy were joined by a third wheel the impressively hyphenated Ty-ler Fassnacht. Its of a darker hue than their earlier high octane scuzz with ruminations on divorce, loss addiction and of course these politically turbulent times.

David Bowie
Space Oddity

Space Oddity is the classic Bowie hit and, as with a lot of classic hits and records (and lets face it not-so-classic records) they continuously get repressed and reissued and recoloured and rewritten and reproduced and remastered etc etc. However, this sweet collection of 7"'s with posters and prints and all sorts is a real treat for fans of...urm...David Bowie.

Bruce Springsteen
Western Stars

You’re not The Boss of me, now! And you’re not so big! Except you are, because you’re Bruce Springsteen.* Western Stars finds bossman Brucie back from Broadway and turning in another set of paeans to The Common American. ‘Hitch Hikin’’, ‘Tucson Train’ and ‘Sleepy Joe’s Cafe’ are the sort of things he could have called his tracks at any point in his discography. Sounds like a Bruce Springsteen album, though a bit mellower and more wistful than some of his previous efforts. *On a side note - why do people call Springsteen ‘The Boss’ anyway? If he’s meant to be on the side of the working man, why does he consistently side with management? Surely it couldn’t be that dear Bruce licks boots? [editorial note: Bruce has said in the past he does not like the name because he dislikes bosses and I will not stand idly by while his good name is dragged through the dirt.]

The Rolling Stones
Beggars Banquet (50th Anniversary Edition)

Beggars Banquet was the first in a run of four classic albums made by The Rolling Stones between 1968 and 1972 where they took their blues roots and fused them with hard rock, country and gospel to create a, well, Stonesy sound that has been copied, but never bettered, by so many bands since. Under the guidance of producer Jimmy Miller they transformed basic blues structures into phenomenal musical moments such as Sympathy For The Devil. This 50th anniversary reissue LP features and extra 12” disc with a mono mix of Sympathy For The Devil and an etched B-side along with a Mick Jagger interview on a flexi-disc. Also available on standard CD.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters
Look Now

Decca may have passed on The Beatles all those years ago but they’ve managed to snare Elvis Costello for his first album in five years, Look Now. Collaborating with his backing band The Imposters for the first time in 10 years,  it was a recent tour of the States with them that made him realise that their past records could have had more of the live oomph they had been producing. So, fired up with a new energy, they headed to the studio to set the record straight. Come as a 2LP or 2CD deluxe edition with 4 bonus tracks or as a standard LP or CD on Decca.

Brothers was the sixth studio album from US super duo the Black Keys and came amid a series of tensions between the pair which threatened to split the band for good. Luckily the pair sorted out their differences and recorded the album at the legendary Muscle Shoals recording complex. It ended up becoming their most successful record and scored an alternative radio hit in Tighten Up.

Shadow People

Shadow People is the fifth album proper by Perpignan’s hazy psych-pop duo The Liminanas. Needless to say, then, that they exude cool. 180g vinyl LP, in a gatefold sleeve, and CD on Because Music.
