Butthole Surfers
Locust Abortion Technician

Pretty scary people back in the day this lot. Locust Abortion Technician was their third studio album and continued their blend of acid fried psychedelia, garage rock and experimentalism. Kuty Cobain cited this as one of his top 50 records of all time and it was a unique, terrifying insight into these strange people's world.

Next Year's Love
Smash The Pink Bug

From Shanghai, an all-girl post-punk band called Next Year's Love, definitely channeling a bit of The Duke Spirit, er, spirit. Lots of brooding synths and moody guitars on the a-side track Smash the Pink Bug, and then a bit more of an upbeat dance-y number on the b-side with True Love Song. Baby blue vinyl, 7” from Genjing Records.

The Durutti Column
The Return Of The Durutti Column

It's fun to imagine the naming sessions for the 1980 debut LP from dream-pop pioneers The Durutti Column. “What are we going to call our first album then? Something that really messes with them. ‘In The Court Of The Crimson Durutti Column’? ‘Remain In Durutti Column’? ‘The Durutti Column Two; Electric Boogaloo’?” “How about ‘The Return Of The Durutti Column’?” “Yeah, I guess that'll do…” Given that the Mancunian group made some of the least abrasive music released by Factory Records, it's slightly incongruous that this should be the Factory album with the famous sandpaper sleeve. Fortunately for those of you who don't want large swathes of your vinyl collection destroyed from within, this new edition of ‘The Return Of The Durutti Column’ opts for a less problematic sandpaper insert. The halcyon musings of the tracks within remain unchanged.

These Monsters
Heroic Dose

Heroic Dose is the 2nd album from Leeds' These Monsters and the follow up to 2010's Call Me Dragon.  Now a three piece following their saxophonist’s move to China their sound has evolved from freaked out riff-driven space prog force to a more grimy agressive speed fueled punk; the 6 minute, principally instrumental slabs of Sabbathesque riffage replaced with songs barely half that length that have more in common with other bands from the Leeds scene from which they emerged such as Pulled Apart By Horses and Hawk Eyes. Tracks: 1 Very Strong Very Clever 2 When The Going Gets Weird 3 Harder and Faster 4 Punk Floyd 5 Live Some 6 Same Sex Scene 7 One of Those Creeps 8 Your Mother’s Lover 9 Survivalists Get All The Girls 10 Heroic Dose

Savages
Silence Yourself

'Silence Yourself' is the debut album from London post-punk outfit Savages. The record sees them blending the driven gothic punk of Joy Division with the charismatic vocals of Jehnny Beth, who channels the theatrics of your Siouxsie Sioux's and Karen O's. The album also saw MASSIVE controversy when Sufjan Stevens said he didn't like the font on the sleeve. Beef.

Iceage
You're Nothing

'You're Nothing' cemented the Danish group's reputation as one of the finest post-punk bands of their era following the huge hype behind their debut 'New Brigade'. Toying with more melody and dynamics than their first record, Iceage blend goth, hardcore and art rock into twelve impressive tracks.

Bauhaus
Mask

Quite simply, one of the greatest post-punk / proto-goth albums of all time. Even better than their near-perfect debut, 1981’s Mask saw Bauhaus successfully expand their template while retaining everything that made them so beloved when they broke out. The album is presented on limited-edition yellow vinyl here.

Baptists
Bushcraft

Baptists drop their debut LP via Southern Lord. Bushcraft makes good on the promise shown by the Vancouver group on their self-titled debut EP. Produced by Converge’s Kurt Ballou, the tracks here tear out of the speakers with a ferocity similar to Drive Like Jehu’s best work. Bushcraft is punishing, invigorating stuff.

The Wake
Harmony

Reissue of The Wake’s 1982 debut LP Harmony here. The Wake were signed up by Factory in an era when the label was looking to cash in on the successes of Joy Division, and the new wave jangles here certainly fit the bill. This Factory Benelux beefs up Harmony's original track listing with a John Peel session and the non-album single ‘Something Outside’. Notable for featuring a young Bobby Gillespie on bass.

New War
New War

ATP unleashed this in 2012 but it's title is almost remarkably apt for early 2020. We should not forget about records like this that take the darker end of Australian music  - let's say Nick Cave in his The Mercy Seat days and weld it to the sort of post punk dub explosion of the likes of This Heat. An underground classic of sorts.

The Sex Pistols
Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols

You can debate the aesthetics and ethics of the Pistols all you want, but there’s no arguing that their only real album is, well, the bollocks. Where would we be without the results of people being inspired by it, being annoyed by it, or reacting against it? This is all the Pistols you need, really (the odd stray b-side notwithstanding).

The Monochrome Set
Strange Boutique

The 1980-released 'Strange Boutique' is the debut studio album by Camden post-punks The Monochrome Set. It's almost impossible to pigeonhole. Contrary guitar riffs and madcap drums swirl across the record unexpectedly aside Bid's (lead) crooning vocals. Their legacy as cult classics is still firmly intact, in this statement debut you'll see why.

The Monochrome Set
Love Zombies

The Monochrome Set were an arty post-punk band with eyebrows permanently arched as they brought a bit of sophistication and poetry into the racket of the day. They were highly influential and you can hear their sound in the likes of the Smiths and Franz Ferdinand. Love Zombies was their second album from 1982 and here gets a limited re-issue on Tapete.

Wire
On The Box 1979

Wire’s live DVD On The Box 1979 gets a reissue through the group’s own Pink Flag imprint. This live set, filmed for German music show Rockpalast, is a rare visual document of the band’s imperial phase. Captured during the band's Pink Flag-Chairs Missing-154 run, On The Box 1979 shows off the post-punkers in all their gnarled glory. The DVD also includes a previously-unreleased interview with Wire conducted by Alan Bangs.

Cancer Bats
Dead Set on Living

Cancer Bats make it a quartet of LPs for Distort Entertainment (Architects, Alexisonfire). Many are saying that Dead Set On Living is the Canadian group’s heaviest set yet, and there certainly is some real fire in the belly to these hardcore/screamo numbers. An impressive guest list - Matty Matheson, Rob Urbinati, Dez Fafara and Kate Cooper - gives Dead Set On Living some additional clout.

LCD Soundsystem
Yeah

Yeah indeed, for this 2003 single from then-fledgling act LCD Soundsystem remains one of the finest things James Murphy has put his name to. Knowing, witty and immensely groovy, the two mixes of ‘Yeah’ here helped to solidify what we’ve now come to recognise as the project’s signature sound. The ‘Crass Version’ mines that rich seam of Killing Joke-style punk-funk while the ebullient ‘Pretentious Version’ steers closer to Arthur Russell’s disco endeavours.

Wipers
Follow Blind

Originally released on Restless back in 1987, Follow Blind was the fifth studio album by pioneering Pacific Northwestern punk band Wipers, who would later gain the patronage of Kurt Cobain. While this album often goes underappreciated in their catalogue, perhaps this silver-coloured vinyl re-issue will cause a re-evaluation.
