Pink Floyd
Meddle

Released in 1971, Meddle by Pink Floyd marked a transition in the group’s sound between the the Syd Barrett era and the band that went on to make Dark Side Of The Moon. Meddle contains the experimental epic Echoes, which takes up the whole of side two and features creative input from the entire band.

Jaakko Eino Kalevi
Dissolution

Finnish auteur Jaakko Eino Kalevi collaborates with Taiwanese singer Yu-Ching Huang on a new mini-album titled Dissolution. Over its seven songs, Kalevi explores new musical avenues in a concept that’s broadly about self-care and living well, while still sticking with his psychedelic pop roots.

Goat
Requiem

Colourful Scandinavian psychedelic crew Goat are back with their third album 'Requiem' which the be-robed psych-sters claim is going to be their 'folk' opus. We'll wait to see on that but in an age of internet transparency, Goat manage to keep a cloaked mystery to their movements which of course makes them way more fascinating than the Twitter twiddlers that pass for many modern rock groups.

TOY
Songs Of Consumption

English psychedelic/shoegaze/krautrock act Toy are coming up to a decade in their existence, and, following the critical acclaim that greeted their fourth album Happy In The Hollow back in January this year, they turn to the songs that inspired them for this eight-track covers album, Songs of Consumption. It includes tracks from diverse artists such as The Troggs, Serge & Charlotte Gainsbourg and Nico. They got the idea from the 7” bonus single of covers that accompanied the Dinked and Rough Trade versions of Happy In The Hollow, and three of those are included here.

Sir Richard Bishop & Ed Yazijian
Sir Richard Bishop & Ed Yazijian

Former Sun City Girls guitarist Richard Bishop joins forces with the band’s erstwhile collaborator Ed Yazijian for a fascinating album, which sees occidental influences mingling oriental ones over three untitled, long-form pieces. Sir Richard Bishop & Ed Yazijian is a meeting of underground minds, and is another classic in the Saraswati series.

Strain Crack & Break: Music From The Nurse With Wound List - Volume 1 (France)

You’ll probably know what the Nurse With Wound list is if you’ve taken even a passing interest in experimental music over the past few decades, but once more for good luck: Compiled by the three original members of the group (Steven Stapleton, John Fothergill, and Heman Pathak) back in the 70's, the list runs to hundreds of artists and has since become an encyclopedia for fans of the musical avant-garde. Now, more than four decades since the first version of the list emerged, Nurse With Wound mainstay Stapleton has got together a compilation based around it. Strain Crack & Break features a baker’s dozen of pieces composed by some of the list’s French entries. Igor Wakhévitch, Jacques Thollot and the late Pierre Henry are among Strain Crack & Break’s tracklist. Out through Finders Keepers.

Sad About The Times

Fed up with The Times newspaper? Hang on, no. I mean: Fed up with the times (in which we currently live)? Up for some songs about it? Here’s a tidy poultice of wistful, uplifting, cathartic and otherwise haunted tunes from the likes of Norma Tanega, David Chalmers and Jim Spencer. Sweet ’n’ sober folk rock, soft rock, psychedelia and so forth.

Silver Apples
Contact

The second album by the magical Silver Apples, first released in 1969 and now reissued for your pleasure. Contact features more of the wonderful interplay between Simeon’s DIY synthesiser monster, Dan Taylor’s pulsing drums, and vocals extolling psychedelic adventures. Contact is reissued by Rotorelief.

Gong
I See You

Gong’s 2014 LP ‘I See You’ was the final album they taped with founding member Daevid ‘Divided Alien’ Allen. This is a fittingly zany spree for Allen’s last hurrah, winding its way through a variety of psychedelic prog outposts - Krautrock, kosmische, motorik rhythms, library jazz and so on. Sounds like … well, it sounds like Gong.

The Wozard Of Iz (Mort Garson)
An Electronic Odyssey

Originally conceived and released by Mort Garson and written by Jacques Wilson back in 1968, The Wozard Of Iz was meant to be a parody soundtrack, setting the characters from the famous movie in the 1960s with a hippie theme to proceedings, but ended up being one of the most beloved cult records of the era. It’s now re-issued by Lasgo on 45rpm vinyl.

The Velvet Underground
Loaded

Loaded was the fourth and penultimate album by The Velvet Underground and the last one to feature any of the original members, most notably, Lou Reed. It is, of course, an absolute classic and should be owned by anyone who has ever expressed even a passing interest in music. It features such greats as Sweet Jane and Rock & Roll.

Pink Floyd
The Dark Side Of The Moon

As literally one of the best-selling albums of all time (741 consecutive weeks in the charts!), you probably already have a copy of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon don’t you? But this new reissue has been remastered, and is pressed to 180g vinyl, and comes in a rather fetching package with a few extra bits. Revisit 1973 in luxury. Released by the band’s own Pink Floyd Records.

Dead Meadow
Feathers

Just what you've been waiting for is a re-issue of the fourth full length studio album by Washington DC rockers Dead Meadow. It blends heavy psych sounds with British influences streaming through from the likes of the Cure and the Stone Roses. This re-issue is an exact replica of the original album but this time comes with a bonus CD of rarities.

Neu!
75

Not the title of a late period Adele record (haven't we done that joke before?) but the third studio album by kraut-rock greats Neu. The duo couldn't decide which direction to go in so they did the natural thing and split the record in two. The first side showcases Neu's earlier repetitive style whilst the B side heads into more ambient territories. A brilliant band who influenced everyone... I'm particularly looking at you Stereolab.

Dos Santos
Logos

Chicago group Dos Santos have an excellent approach, working with South American styles like cumbia and caminante and working them in with touches of psychedelia and tightly textural post-rock. Really it's a rich and forward-looking sound that makes all the combinations sound entirely natural. Logos is released by International Anthem.

Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band
Nightmare Forever

Boasting hazy, jazzy psychedelia inspired by the likes of Tolkien, Leary and the more extreme end of Led Zep, John Dwyer’s Castle Face Records releases the latest album from Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band. With complex riffs and arrangements, Nightmare Forever is a much more conceptual effort than their previous records.
  • Genre(s):

Boris
Akuma No Uta

Never fear - although they may share a name with our troublesome and idiotic prime minister, Boris are excellent, combining ultra-heavy riffing with thunderous percussion ever since they came into being in 1992. Third Man Records re-issues their 2003 album, Akuma No Uta, to collide with a brand new American tour.

Causa Sui
Return To Sky

Spaced-out krautrock impressions from Causa Sui. They bring the tight loops and grooves of a minimal rock group, but add in some slowed down stoner freak-outs. Return to Sky on El Paraiso Records is unapologetically psychedelic, full of heavy riffing, massive drums and surreal breakdowns that sound like something borrowed from Ennio Morricone.

The Dukes of Stratosphear
Psonic Psunspot

The Dukes of Stratosphear were a 60s psychedelic pop group who released two albums. 'Psonic Psunspot', their second, was released in 1987... Wait a minute, something's not quite right. These Dukes were actually the side-project of art-punks XTC who managed to not only be convincing, but also very, very good. A whole lot of fun.

Abronia
The Whole Of Each Eye

With half of their six-piece line-up having altered since their debut album, psychedelic rock / desert rock group Abronia deliver a follow-up effort, The Whole of Each Eye. The most notable difference is that there no instrumentals this time around, with saxophonist Keelin Mayer’s vocals now one of the most prominent parts of the mix, itself a timeless blend of influences.

Can
Ege Bamyasi

'Ege Bamyasi' sees Can at their funkiest, grooviest, and most accessible. The fourth album from the krautrockers blends avant-funk with hypnotic psychedelic rock, prog complexity and smatterings of early electronic. Stephen Malkmus has covered it in full, Kanye West has plundered some samples from it, and Can even scored a Top Ten hit when 'Spoon' was used as a theme song in a German detective show. All we know is this is an essential album of outsider rock with a rather tasty looking cover.

New on lovely 7" label Market Square is a couple of tracks by soft folk whisperer Cheval Sombre. Just 300 with a hand numbered postcard.

Green Seagull
Simeon Brown / Belladonna

Green Seagull are one of them there London psychedelic pop groups. New single ‘Simeon Brown’/‘Belladonna’ is an immaculately-turned-out duo of 60’s-inspired ditties. The former is very (very) Magical Mystery Tour, while ‘Belladonna’ offsets the McCartney-isms with a little more garage bite. One for those of you still mourning the breakup of Ultimate Painting.

Circle
Meronia

The first ever album from Circle, which forced the world to take note of their heavily driving Finnish krautrock sound. Meronia was first released in 1994, and consequently lasts for an hour and a quarter. You can pick up the CD or the vinyl version, although be aware that only vinyl-getters will hear the last bonus track… Joint release by Ektro, Full Contact and Svart.

Even A Tree Can Shed Tears: Japanese Folk & Rock 1969-1973

This Light In The Attic compilation looks rather fantastic, historicising folk music from the tail-end of 1960s Japan. Cited as a period of growing political and cultural action amongst the country's younger demographic, Even A Tree Can Shed Tears arguably acts as a retrospective to music that was at its time unprecedented, with these artists seeking their own, particular sound through folk music.

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.
Minstrel In The Galaxy

'Minstrel In The Galaxy' by Japanese experimental psychedelic rockers Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O was originally released in 2004 on CD only. It featured a newly trimmed line up and their sound was more stripped back and darker, gradually preparing the listener for the gigantic crescendo. This is the first vinyl release of the album.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Their Satanic Majesties Second Request

Forever immortalised in the film ‘Dig!’, the early days of The Brian Jonestown Massacre are now the stuff of rock legend. 1996’s ‘Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request’, the fourth studio LP to emerged from the band’s prolific mid-90s run, has come to be one of the band’s defining records. These ultra-psychy jangles smash together rock’s leather-jacketed and hippie legacies.

Richard Dawson
2020

Despite album artwork and a title that seem like they belong to an Ed Sheeran record, '2020' in fact belongs to the UK's other great singer songwriter slash troubadour. I am of course talking about the wonderful Richard Dawson, who has helped drag the UK folk tradition into 2020 and beyond.

Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd’s Animals features the mega-selling prog outfit beginning to turn dark and disillusioned, which made for more interesting music. Apart from the two tiny ‘Pigs On The Wing’ tracks, everything here is over 10 minutes in length. This new reissue has been remastered, and is pressed to 180g vinyl, and comes in a rather fetching package. Released by the band’s own Pink Floyd Records.

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band
Sun Zoom Spark: 1970 to 1972

The weird anachronistic blues rock of Captain Beefheart is celebrated in 'Sun Zoom Spark', a monstrous boxset which collects four of his early 70s recordings: 'Like My Decals Off, Baby', 'The Spotlight Kid', 'Clear Spot' and a record of out-takes called all appear. 'Sun Zoom Spark' is a good find for newly initiated Beefheart fans who want to go further into his story, as well as for completlist fans out there.

Cambridge psych-rock released via Brighton’s Drone Rock label. The name Psychic Lemon really is a name to live up to, and this band happily deliver on their obligations. The Dukes of Stratosphear
25 O' Clock

'25 O' Clock' rock, around the clock... The debut album from the mysterious and elusive Dukes of Stratosphear (not actually that mysterious and elusive, just XTC having some fun) is a good argument for the value in knowing your musical history. The 80s were not the 60s but that doesn't mean you couldn't make great 60s music in the 80s.

ESP Ohio
Starting Point Of The Royal Cyclopean

ESP Ohio is yet another band by Robert Pollard, working once again with his fellow Guided By Voices member Doug Gillard. Starting Point Of The Royal Cyclopean is a proper nice rock album, with guitar chug, bonus brass parts, and catchy tunes. The good ship Pollard sails on… Released by the Guided By Voices Inc. record label

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band
Clear Spot

Don Van Vliet’s reputation mostly rests on the mind-bending knottiness of Troutmaskreplica and similar work, but he could also dial down the weird and dial up the blues. 1972’s Clear Spot is his most successful attempt to nail a compromise between groove-driven blues rock and his inimitable creative eccentricities. There’s the title track’s swamp eco-blues, the Stax soul of Too Much Time, the acid rock rush of Sun Zoom Spark, and a couple of delicate psychedelic love songs. Still plenty of surreal tomfoolery afoot, like Zoot Horn Rollo’s slide showpiece Big-Eyed Beans from Venus, and those Little Golden Birdies - look at them! A good entry point into the Beefheart universe on 180g vinyl.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Eyes Like The Sky

Eyes Like The Sky was the second King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. It was originally released in 2013 and there were only 500 pressed. Can
Tago Mago

Can’s most sprawling and untethered work. The first side goes from the plaintive Paperhouse to the apocalyptic groove of Mushroom, to the uptempo masterpiece Oh Yeah, making for as great a side of vinyl as ever there was. Side two is taken up by the funk monster Halleluhwah. Side three brings us Aumgn’s occult channelling. The last side has the manic Peking O and the mournful closer Bring Me Coffee or Tea. Damo, Jaki, Holger, Irmin and Michael are all at the peak of their powers and in perfect cosmic harmony. Sacred stuff to be sure and never more so than on double vinyl.

Feedbacker

'Feedbacker' is Japanese experimental metal band Boris’ masterpiece, encompassing one song divided into five distinct movements. The piece shape-shifts from drone metal to psychedelia, bleeding into stoner metal and glorious noise where even the percussion distorts! ‘Feedbacker’ is a record which perfectly highlights Boris’ chameleonic tendencies, making it an essential record for fans of post-metal, psych rock, drone and noise rock.

Matt Valentine is taking a break from his project with partner Erika Elder known as Mv & EE. His solo album, Preserves, was seemingly recorded in space where occasional blues grooves and Pink Floyd-style pleasantries burst out from ethereal synths and stardusted noises. A number of people have contributed to this cosmic jam - J. Mascis, P.G. Six, Willie Lane, and the aforementioned Erika Elder and many more.

Dope feat. Fuck Authority
666 / 1381

Of course Julian Cope has a band that’s just called Dope… Here, this outfit is joined by Fuck Authority, in order to get extra massive in these two side-long psyched-up epics. Titled 666 and 1381 (the devil’s number and the year of Wat Tyler’s peasant’s rebellion, nice), these two slabs add up to some serious high-action weight. 10” on Environmental Studies.

Tengger
Segye

Segye is an album of hypnotic, harmonium and analogue synthesizer compositions by pan-Asian band and traveller family Tengger. Complete with angelic vocals, this album is a marriage between the organic and the electronic. One particular Bandcamp comment describes it as 'aural hang gliding'. I needn't say more. Rose City Band

Rose City Band hail from Portland, Oregon and play some laid-back strums. Their eponymous debut was produced by Eric 'Ripley' Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Moon Duo and mixed by Chris Cohen. Brown Acid: The Ninth Trip

Brown Acid: The Ninth Trip, like Nuggets and Pebbles compilations in the past, digs up lost and forgotten classics from the 1960s. The Brown Acid series concentrates on the heavier side of things, rediscovering proto-metal and proto-stoner bands that the world has forgotten, or in some cases, never really knew.

Genesis
Selling England By The Pound

Selling England By The Pound is the album that gave Genesis their first taste of real commercial success. The band's fifth long-player was originally released in 1973. It charted at No.3 and also contains their first top 30 hit, the strangely melodic I Know What You Like (In Your Wardrobe). Reissue 180g vinyl LP on Virgin/EMI.

Roy Montgomery
Scenes From The South Island

An expanded double-vinyl re-issue of Scenes From The South Island, the cult classic debut album from New Zealand’s guitar experimentalist Roy Montgomery (The Pin Group, Dissolve et al.). Originally released in 1995 on San Francisco label Drunken Fish Records, these instrumentals take in all kinds of moods and sounds at the intersection of post-rock and rural psychedelia. Now, it’s re-packaged with three bonus tracks courtesy of Liz Harris's (Grouper) Yellow Electric label.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Give It Back!

Ah what would we do without the Brian Jonestown Massacre. We'd have two or three fewer records to sell per week that's what we'd do. The latest is a re-issue of their 1997 record Give it Back. This is the one they were working on around the time Dig! was filmed ("man, you broke my Sitar!"). It also is the only BJM album to feature future the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club member Peter Hayes.

Astral TV
Travelling The Circuits

That sleeve with its hazed-out images of a big flapping bird should tell you that we are in the presence of some pretty nifty modular synth gear. Copenhagen duo Astral TV own a vast collection of synthesizers which they use to make their second batch of Vangelis inspired, slowly unfurling synth compositions. Sit back, relax and let's let the synths do the talking.

Six Organs of Admittance

“I’m being swept by this notion of time passing,” Kevin Parker explained to the New York Times about his new Tame Impala album earlier in 2019. “There’s something really intoxicating about it.” That preoccupation is at the centre of The Slow Rush, due for release on Valentine’s Day 2020 and 11 whole months after we got the first taste of new music ‘Borderline’ earlier this year. One of the most anticipated indie releases of recent years!

The Liminanas
Le Bel Été (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Film director Pierre Creton hooked up with The Limiñanas when they were on the road with their 2018 album, Shadow People. He asked them to write the soundtrack to his film Le Bel Été, and they duly obliged. The music is more electronic than what you’d usually expect from the duo. Features guest performances from Ivan Telefunken and Etienne Daho.

The Liminanas
One Blood Circle

The Limiñanas met fan and film director Pierre Creton whilst touring their album, Shadow People. Creton asked the duo if they would soundtrack his film, Le Bel Été. One Blood Circle is the film’s main theme song and features a guest performance from cult French singer, Etienne Daho. The B-side of this 7” sees them covering Non Non Rien N’a Changé, a bit of French classic originally by ‘70s group Les Poppys.

People's Temple
Musical Garden

This album blew our collective socks off back in 2014. People's Temple had already released two LPs on Hozac but Musical Garden was perhaps their finest statement. It took the 60s garage of the Seeds, the Rolling Stones and the Standells and twisted it into exciting new shapes.  The band were impossibly young but had all the right psych-rock moves on an album no fan of Ty Segall or the Brian Jonestown Massacre should be without.

Can
Delay

Mute brought back more Can than any krautrock fan could possibly handle with the 'Can Vinyl Box', which featured seventeen Can records reissued in one bundle; now each record is stepping out on its own. 'Delay' is a rarity in Can's catalogue, comprised entirely of outtakes from their time working with original vocalist Malcolm Mooney. Released way back when in 1981, 'Delay' was only fully formed when band co-founder Holger Czukay brought together the flurry of tracks on tape to make a proper record. It's now been remastered.   Tracks: Butterfly Pnoom Nineteen Century Man The Thief Man Named Joe Uphill Little Star of Bethlehem

Tame Impala
Lonerism

Come on now, we know the score with this one! Lonerism, Tame Impala's second LP, has undoubtedly become a modern classic. It catapulted the Aussie group from psych stone-rockers to a global phenomenon who sell out stadiums world-wide. 'Elephant', 'Feels Like We Only Go Backwards', 'Apocalypse Dreams' - need we say more?

Oranssi Pazuzu
Live at Roadburn

Oranssi Pazazu are a Finnish psychedelic black metal band, not that they necessarily want to get bogged down in all that genre stuff. They are just the kind of band to go down a storm at the Roadburn festival which is what they did in 2016 and 2017. Live At Roadburn will help you experience their blistering and innovative experimentalism in the comfort of your own home. Essential fact: Their keyboard player is called Evil.

Sunny Spells

Sunny Spells is a taster EP for a forthcoming CD Box Set on Fruits De Mer - The Three Seasons. It features tracks by ‘60s Brit folk rock duo Chad and Jeremy, the enigmatic Schizo Fun Addict, pysch / prog / folk band Hanford Flyover and Scandanavian duo, Us and Them covering Neil Young’s What Did You Do To My Life, from his debut solo LP.

Guitarist Icarus Peel and Crystal Jaqueline have worked together for a long time, doing their best to keep psychedelic rock alive in the UK. Garcia Peoples
One Step Behind

Consisting of just two tracks, one of which is the astonishing 32-minute title song, One Step Behind sees Garcia Peoples release their third studio album in just over 18 months. The album’s ingenuity is down to the group’s two songwriters, Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki, who show how many influences and themes they’re able to contain in one structure and still keep it coherent.

Pink Floyd
The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn

Piper at the Gates of Dawn was the debut album by Pink Floyd and their only album to be recorded under the stewardship of founding member Syd Barrett. It was released in 1967 - Barrett was fired midway through the recording of its follow-up A Saucerful of Secrets. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is highly regarded as a British psychedelic classic and definitely their most wonderfully strange recording.

Pink Floyd
Relics

Few best ofs from the psychedelic era retain their usefulness as well as Relics - an ironic title, given that it almost apologises for four-year-old material that’s now half a century old. The 1971 compilation compiled the essential Syd Barrett-era singles See Emily Play and Arnold Layne along with choice album tracks and b-sides. The latter include the original version of Careful with That Axe, Eugene, Roger Waters’ Julia Dream, and Rick Wright’s Paintbox. In fact Wright emerges as the surprise hero with that track and the lovely Remember a Day, as Waters is still finding his feet with the then previously unreleased Biding My Time. Floyd’s struggle to find a direction following Barrett’s departure yielded mixed results, but this comp remains a cohesive listen, with impeccable track selections and sequencing.

Tomorrow Syndicate
Citizen Input

Following up on their brilliant debut album from last year Future Tense and bridging a gap between their second effort expected in 2020, this is a special 10” vinyl EP from Tomorrow Syndicate. More confident and comfortable than their home-recorded album, Citizen Input adds more elements to their sci-fi/krautrock sonic compounds.

The Flaming Lips
The Soft Bulletin

Iiiiiiit’s the best album by The Flaming Lips. Well, that’s the general consensus on The Soft Bulletin anyway. This 1999 LP both represents a sea change in The Flaming Lips’ writing style and also stands the most effective marriage of the band’s prog and pop sides. At its best, The Soft Bulletin is baroque and masterful in a manner that makes it more than worthy of all the Pet Sounds comparisons it’s had down the years.

Om
BBC Radio 1

Om are a heavy metal band who were formed as a duo by Al Cisneros and Chris Hakius from stoner metalers, Sleep. Hakius has since left the band. They have expanded to a trio with the addition of Emil Amos and Tyler Trotter. BBC Radio 1 is a session they recorded at the legendary Maida Vale studios in spring 2019. Among the four tracks are the OM classics Gethsemine and State Of No Return.

The Dukes of Stratosphear
Psurroundabout Ride

The Dukes of Stratosphear were the alter ego of XTC in the mid '80s a time when psychedelic music was seemingly confined to the dustbin of history despite slowly emerging scenes in then UK and the US. The band adopted pseudonyms in order to make music more obviously in thrall to the 60s psychedelic experiences they'd had as youths and strangely enough the Dukes started to sell more records than its parent band. Indeed producer John Leckie was chosen by the Stone Roses after they'd heard his work on 25 O’Clock and Psonic Psunspot the two albums collected here. Both have been remastered and on the blu-ray you also get complete demos and instrumental versions.

Infinity Forms Of Yellow Remember
Infinity Forms Of Yellow Remember

Infinity Forms of Yellow Remember are a psych/space rock band from Cardiff. They trade in being loud, being repetitive and unfettered use of wah-wah pedals, so you know, excellent, man. What makes it really good, though, is on top of that swirling psych racket are some glorious melodies. Self titled LP on Cardinal Fuzz.

Frank Zappa
Halloween 73

Musical oddball and virtuoso guitarist Frank Zappa celebrated Halloween, his favourite time of year, between 1974 and 1984 by hosting a huge show in New York. Before he decided on making New York his Halloween home he played two shows on October 31st in Chicago. Halloween 73 is available as a 4 CD set including both shows along with a disc of bonus rehearsal material and a single CD of Highlights.

Guerilla Toss
What Would The Odd Do?

What Would The Odd Do? by Guerilla Toss is a cosmic cacophony of rock, funk and dance that takes its cues from Todd Rundgren, Deerhoof and King Crimson. The album has been made on the other side of band leader Kassie Carlson's recovery from addiction which also included open heart surgery. Looking at life with a fresh perspective meant a move to New York and a new album made with a renewed vigour.

Hawkwind
All Aboard The Skylark

Bloody hell, fifty years of Hawkwind. That’s impressive no matter what you think of their music. The space-rock voyagers may be pretty long in the tooth at this point, but despite their age they show no signs of slowing down - 'All Aboard The Skylark', their thirty-second studio LP (!), is as widescreen and bombastic as anything else in their output. The CD edition of All Aboard The Skylark also comes with a bonus album of acoustic jams. That’s a lot of Hawkwind! Good thing they can still do what they do like no-one else can.

The Cosmic Dead
Scottish Space Race

Glasgow heavyweights the Cosmic Dead return with four more slabs of supersized psychedelic jam. Their churning, monolithic sound has been recorded live at their Glasgow hideaway by long term collaborator Luigi Pasquini and features lap steel synth (what?) from Andrew Gray (Girl Sweat). Sure as always to knock your socks clean off...and isn't that image on the cover art similar geographically to Lana Del Rey's understanding of the Scottish border?

Ramleh
It’s Never Alright / Kerb Krawler

With Fourth Dimension supporting both Gary Mundy and Anthony Di Franco’s solo projects for many years, it’s a red letter day for the label that they can release a new Ramleh record itself. Available on green coloured 7” vinyl, ‘It’s Never Alright’ and ‘Kerb Krawler’ are both prime cuts that are playful yet serious.

Kreidler
Flood

German band Kreidler have had a lot of genres tagged to them since 1994. From krautrock to IDM to neo-classical to avant garde and more, they all describe the band’s creative approach. 'Flood' is their fourteenth album. It’s an 8 track album on which 5 of the tracks are called 'Flood', making a side-long suite of Floods.

10,000 Russos
Kompromat

You sort of know what you are going to get with the Fuzz Club label and that is surely a good thing in this ultra confusing world. They stick to their kraut/psych template with this third album by Portuguese trio 10,000 Russos. The band have a combatative repeato rock sound with nods to Suicide and Neu with lots of abrasive guitars and motorik percussion. Atop of the racket singer João Pimenta barks out otherworldly rants perhaps something like a futurist Mark E Smith or Captain Beefheart.

Routine Death
2 Weeks To 4 Month

Lisa and Dustin Zozaya announce their sophomore Routine Death album 2 Weeks To 4 Months. Reflecting their roots that span Sweden and Texas, the new record combines the kind of pop melodies associated with Scandinavian indie with the kind of deep-fried pysch-rock common to the deep south in the States.

The Groundhogs
Thank Christ For The Bomb (Standard Edition)

The Groundhogs formed as a blues band in the early 60s. By 1970 when their third album, 'Thank Christ For The Bomb', was recorded, they were morphing into a heavier prog rock band. It has been cited as proto-punk, proto-grunge and as "a masterpiece’ by the NME. The album has a diverse set of famous fans from the Damned’s Captain Sensible, Underworld’s Karl Hyde and former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus whose solo work takes a trick or two from here.

Jemma Freeman was a member of Bella Union band Landshapes before a solo project and now full band Jemma Freeman and the Cosmic Something, took over. 'Oh Really, What’s That Then?' Is their debut album following a couple of singles and EPs. Described as a power trio, their sound takes in psychedelic glam rock, folk rock and proto-metal.

Psychic TV
The Evening Sun Turns Crimson

In 2017 Psychic TV were commissioned to play a live musical performance alongside a showing of Derek Jarman's 1974 film 'In The Shadow of the Sun'. The performance took place at (where else?) Cafe Oto in London and here is the musical accompaniment for the first time on vinyl and based (I think) on an original soundtrack by Throbbing Gristle.

L'épée
Diabolique

L'épée is a collaboration between Brian Jonestown Massacre main man, Anton Newcombe, French psych-pop duo, The Limiñanas and French actor, former model and singer, Emmanuelle Seigner. Diabolique was recorded in The Limiñanas studio in the south of France then taken to Berlin by Anton, where he gave the songs a darker, more psychedelic edge.

Allah-Las
LAHS

After a solo run out under the name Paint, Pedrum Siadatian returns to the womb that bore him, i.e. Allah-Lahs. LAHS is the band’s fourth album. There’s a palpable togetherness about this album, but their sun-bleached melodies and soft psychedelia remain at their core. On Mexican Summer.

Julie's Haircut
In The Silence Electric

As I started writing this my girlfriend Julie was fretting about her hair. Weird huh? Well this Julie's Haircut are an Italy-based cosmic psych-rock band with an interest in the metaphysical and all that sort of palaver. This, their second album blends the religious preaching of Spiritualized (they mention the lord at one point) with the drone churn of Suicide plus all sorts of jazz-flecked experimentation. A record for altered states and higher consciousness. Long may they drone on.

Föllakzoid
I

Chilean band Föllakzoid deliver their fourth studio album a very long four years after their last one. I (confusingly following 2015’s III) differs from their previous albums in that it was constructed painstakingly from dozens of musical stems, rather than done in single live takes with the band in the studio.

Beautiful Freaks - Waving Our Flag High, Wave On, Wave On: Music From The Original Counter Culture

Though it might evoke images of crusties and hippies, Beautiful Freaks is an excellently compiled collection providing a snapshot into the first proper counter-cultural wave in mainstream society. This double-LP set from Tad Records includes cuts from the Grateful Dead, Brigitte Fontaine, Hawkwind and the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

All Them Witches
Dying Surfer Meets His Maker

Having released much of their previous material themselves, All Them Witches are putting their latest psych-rock epic through the New West label. Locking themselves away in a Tennessee cabin for 5 days, they’ve emerged with Dying Surfer Meets His Maker as a result. Whilst there is a definite groove; switching between soft vocals over picked guitars and Hawkwind esque bass driven peaks, there is a palpable sombreness to this record.

Harmonia
Musik Von Harmonia

Always good to have these German jewels in print. Gronland are reissuing the first two Harmonia studio albums, to the joy of all. The 1970’s group combined Cluster with Micheal Rother of Neu!: three professionals in the art of ascending to higher musical planes through shiny repetition. Musik Von Harmonia was their first recording together.
