Throbbing Gristle
20 Jazz Funk Greats

For all their reputation as “wreckers of civilisation”, by 1979 the original industrial quartet had gotten some of the confrontation out of their system and were exploring a wider range of expression. Chris and Cosey were getting more into their electronics, evident on the pure electropop of Hot on the Heels of Love and Walkabout’s jolly sequenced synth. Of course, it wouldn’t be TG if it was all “very friendly”, so Persuasion and Six Six Sixties see Genesis P-Orridge letting in various shades of creepiness. Peter Christopherson must be responsible for some of the sleaziness too, of course. Double CD reissue, with a disc’s worth of live tracks from 1979.

YOB
Clearing The Path To Ascend

It sounds a lot like a yogurt, but YOB is actually the name for a doom metal outfit formed by hardcore drummer turned slow guitar fiend Mike Scheidt. for YOB, he enlisted Travis Foster and Aaron Rieseberg, who help fill out the band's aggressive but snail-paced rhythm section. 'Clearing the Path to Ascend' is their seventh record in twelve years, and as always, shit gets heavy. You probably already know who they sound like, but just in case, prepare yourself with some Sleep and Electric Wizard.

Music Blues
Things Haven't Gone Well

This is the solo debut from  Stephen Tanner of Harvey Milk. It doesn't veer too far off the track he has pursued already with his main band  - i.e heavy Melvins, Gore, Earth, ZZ Top, Kiss and Judas Priest influences. The theme of the album is his life so far. Interesting.....maybe. I'm not sure if his life has been a dirgey sludge but the initial blurb on the album informs me that this is the route the music takes, though there's some solid boogie thrown in there possibly to soundtrack a drunken prom appearance. The influence of John Carpenter and Ennio Morricone is present lending the album a more cinematic quality that previous recordings. The CD version comes in 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package. There's also a deluxe double LP pressed on virgin (oof!) vinyl and packaged in an uncoated stock gatefold jacket with free download coupon. Initial vinyl copies are pressed on ‘sh*t brown’ coloured vinyl, with the remaining copies on black.

Opium Warlords
Taste my Sword Of Understanding

A record named Taste My Sword Of Understanding, by a band named Opium Warlords: take a guess. You got it, doom-heavy metal! This release, heralded as the last for this particular moniker (though Sami Albert Hynninen, for it is he, has others), is a strange one, sometimes rather abstract, sometimes rather unsettling. Interesting medieval-violence painting on the cover too.

Cradle Of Filth
Total Fucking Darkness

Cradle Of Filth! I’ve got to say, I really appreciate a band having the self-awareness to name an album Total Fucking Darkness: it’s a title that doesn’t mess around, or pretend to be about anything other than what it is. Excellent. This double LP is actually a reissue of an early (1992) demo, bolstered here with significant new material. Get fucking dark.

Broken Bone
Willowbrook EP

Broken Bone are Yorkshire duo Daz Quayle and Tony 'Bone' Snowden. Most of you will know Daz already as one half of Scarletron, IL.EK.TRO and owner of scsi-av (no?). Tony has certainly paid his dues to the industry too, performing in noise bands, Crumbling Spine and Yorkshire Bone; laden with distorted drum machines, guitar and effects with Tony on Vox. Infact it was after attending a gig that Daz got involved writing backing tracks for the band. An album of brutal realism, intense and claustrophobic. It's as dark as the subject matter! One foot planted firmly in the noise genre, the other planted firmly in your face!

Martyrdod
Elddop

Sweden’s d-beat crust gods, MARTYRDÖD, return with their second full-length for Southern Lord. Once again they entered the infamous Studio Fredman (At The Gates, Amon Amarth, Opeth) to record their new full-length, entitled Elddop, the crushing follow-up to 2012’s Paranoia LP. It's extreme and not very nice, but it's an evil kind of swell.

ZATH
Black Goat Razor / Pain Reaper

ZATH (pronounced ‘ZOTH’) is made of three men - Zack Weil, Seth Sher and Dan Browning, all of whom have an existence outside of the howling maw of rage / despair that is ZATH. In fact, they’re all pretty busy musicians in other Chicago bands: guitarist and singer Zack plays in Oozing Wound and was previously in Cacaw; drummer Seth makes music as SYNE and Psychic Steel and also played in Coughs and Ga’an; bassist Dan works hard in CAVE as well.

Mastodon
Once More ‘Round the Sun

'Once More 'Round The Sun' is Mastodon's sixth record, produced by rock and metal professor Nick Raskulinecz, who has worked with a variety of crossover metal bands, including Deftones, as well as proggier outfits like Rush. The record continues to push a version of Mastodon into the public with clean vocals, catchy riffs and an ear for mainstream rock, though certain tracks like "High Road" retain their penchant for sludgy metal with dark tones. Brann Dailor has said what he really wanted 'Once More 'Round The Sun' to be is "huge and weird". Features contributions from the Coathangers and Scott Kelly of Neurosis. Tracks: Tread Lightly The Motherload High Road Once More 'Round the Sun Chimes at Midnight Asleep in the Deep Feast Yopur Eyes Aunt Lisa Ember City Halloween Diamond in the Witch House

SEIROM
And The Light Will Swallow Everything

SEIROM is M.C. De Jong. And The Light Will Swallow Everything marks a departure from De Jong’s usual desolate and bleak work, this time he has created something that is bright and glorious, 4AD-ish and cinematic by using elements of shoegaze, post-rock and black metal. And The Light Will Swallow Everything is available on vinyl LP.
