Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard
Noeth Ac Anoeth

If you are going to form a stoner doom outfit, you might as well go all the way right? Hence this band from Wales, who’ve titled themselves Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard. Noeth Ac Anoeth fits just three large numbers into 50 minutes, stretching out their heaviness. Jessica Ball’s vocals set them apart somewhat though. 300 copies only of the transparent frosted vinyl edition.

Orthodox
Axis

Orthodox return, in duo format. That’s one drum kit, one bass guitar, and some harried vocals. But Axis also features significant contributions from classical instruments: horns and clarinets give a great deal of depth to these songs, sometimes doom-droning it out, sometimes leading a furious charge forwards. On Alone Records.

Aris Kindt
Floods

Submerged avant-techno from the duo of Francis Harris and Gabe Hedrick: together they form Aris Kindt. Debut album Floods was inspired by the work of the wonderful author W.G. Sebald: consequently it woozes in and out of the past and the present, of recognisable forms and attractive abstraction. CD or slate grey vinyl on Harris’ Scissor & Thread label.

Melvins
Across The USA In 51 Days: The Movie

Merchants of heavy sludge The Melvins evidently have a lot of stamina: not only have they been playing and releasing for many decades, they also undertook a 50 state US tour in 51 days back in 2012: wow. Across The USA In 51 Days: The Movie is just that, a document of that tour shot mostly on the band’s phones for that intimate touch. An essential DVD for Melvins fans.

Whitehouse
Erector

English electronic band Whitehouse have connections with Daniel Miller of Mute, J.G. Thirlwell and Steven Stapleton of Nurse With Wound. They are largely responsible for the industrial sub-genre of power electronics. Certainly, before their third album, Erector, was released in 1981, nothing in electronic music had sounded so harsh. The album’s themes are taken from the erotic sadomasochistic literature of Marquis de Sade. Reissue CD with booklet and original uncensored artwork.

Whitehouse
Total Sex

Controversial power electronics pioneers Whitehouse originally released their second album 'Total Sex' back in 1980. This reissue features bonus tracks 'Her Entry' and 'Foreplay' which originally appeared on a label compilation album. The tracks were recorded during the same sessions as Total Sex, so it’s only fitting that they find a home together here.

With The Dead
With The Dead

With The Dead are a supergroup, although they’re not so keen on the term. They are a heavier-than-heavy metal trio made up from Tim Bagshaw and Mark Greening of Electric Wizard and Lee Dorrian of Cathedral and Napalm Death. Dorrian also owns the pioneering UK label Rise Above. The label have had a fractious relationship with Electric Wizard over the years, but all seems fine on their eponymous debut...or has it added to the brutal sounds waiting to fight their way out of your speakers? I think you’re gonna like this.

Dark Buddha Rising
Inversum

Dark Buddha Rising are exactly as metal as a record titled Inversum with that cover would be expected to be. Doom metal, to be more specific, with thick psychedelic lashings all over the place. Two side-long tracks see the Finnish band draw the listener deep into a repetitive void. CD or gatefold LP on Inversum.

Black Breath
Slaves Beyond Death

Black Breath have a furious flail of death metal to show to you. Slaves Beyond Death (could they BE any more metal?) is their third record, and the band are proud to be even more unpleasant-sounding than ever on this one. ‘Putrid’, ‘rotting’, and ‘bile’ according to the press release. CD or double LP on Southern Lord.

Cut Hands
Festival Of The Dead

William Bennett's new record under the percussive Cut Hands moniker, 'Festival Of The Dead', is based around aggressive, deathly drums, as you'd expect by now -- it's the ex-Whitehouse member's third record under his new alias, and this particular branch of noise continues to sound more organic and rhythmic.

Corrections House
Know How To Carry A Whip

Know How To Carry A Whip by Corrections House is the dark follow-up to 2013’s Last City Zero. The electronic metal band are a collective made up from members of Eyehategod, Neurosis, Yakuza and Minsk. The songs have their foundations built on loops and beats with the metallic riffs laid on top. Ostensibly being of equal importance to the music the band have a spin doctor-type figure in Seward Fairbury who spreads the word about their sound.

Out on CD, deluxe 2CD and 180g vinyl gatefold 2LP on Spinefarm.

Carcass
Surgical Steel (Complete Edition)

Carcass made their comeback in 2013 with Surgical Steel, a record that more than satisfied the extreme metal faithful. Stacks of thick riffs, blast beats and enraged demon howls. This Complete Edition reissue adds B-sides, Japanese rarities and unheard material. Double LP in a gatefold sleeve, on Nuclear Blast.

Ron Morelli
A Gathering Together

Dom Fernow’s Hospital Productions label has been gradually following his path towards techno, though without fully shedding the harsh distortions we’d expect given the label’s past. L.I.E.S head Ron Morelli manages all of that, with a full-length that will pound you with heavy dancing all night long. A Gathering Together is available as an LP.

Lord Real
Bad Code EP

Lord Real is a Norwegian lady who is now resident in the UK. Bad Code EP is a paradoxically focused yet unsettled work that has been likened to an imaginary lo-fi jam session between Aphex Twin, Earth’s Dylan Carson and artist Russell Haswell. The recording will make you question your hearing but Zones, the label responsible for this release, would like to assure you that it’s working just fine. Cassette only, limited to 50 copies.

Windhand
Grief's Infernal Flower

Windhand are a doom metal band with a sensitive side. The sleeve art of Grief’s Eternal Flower provides a key to the balance the group maintains: death (the tombstones), but with some life still hanging on in the form of sonic moss. Super-heavy, female-vocal-fronted stuff, issued on the Relapse label.

With elements of free jazz and death metal accompanied by chaotic additions of demon-chasing rituals, their music has a primitive brutality that is deliberately ignorant.

Plenitude is pretty direct for a Denovali release. While Oneirogen does have some of the ambient-droning-electroacoustics we’ve come to expect expect from the label, this EP also kicks very hard, with crashes of noise and battering beats: even some distant black metal-esque screams! Strong stuff.
