Wild Beasts
Limbo, Panto

"Now sing it in your normal voice and stop messing about". This is what a sound engineer said to shrill-voiced Wild Beasts co frontman Hayden Thorpe at a soundcheck for an early gig.  They did indeed sound very silly indeed at first but Limbo, Panto showed the first signs that they weren't a preposterous in-joke and actually had some rather lovely songs. It's their most angular and eccentric record for sure but it paves the way for the superb Two Dancers and shouldn't be underestimated.

Joan As Police Woman
To Survive

To Survive was the second album by Joan As Policewoman and is a cathartic record inspired by her mother's death from cancer. It features two super guest stars in David Sylvian and Rufus Wainwright and is here presented as a luxury re-issue in gatefold sleeve and on what is described as sun/gold coloured vinyl.

PJ Harvey
Rid of Me

Rid of Me was the second studio album released by P J Harvey following on from her debut Dry. It was recorded by Steve Albini and (possibly as a result) had a much rawer and primitive sound than Dry. It was performed by the trio of Harvey, Rob Ellis and Steve Vaughan and was the last LP the trio would record as a unit.

The Black Angels
Directions To See A Ghost

Describing their music as "hypno-drone-rock'n'roll", the Black Angels actually make that brainwashing kind of psych rock where the guitars sound like a watch being dangled in front of you. 'Directions On How To See A Ghost' continues the political inclinations of the band's lyrical and sonic motifs, influenced in particular by the apocalyptic novel 'We'.

The Triffids
The Black Swan

The Black Swan is the fifth and final LP from much-loved Australian post-punks The Triffids. Originally released in 1989, the band drafted in The Smiths’ producer extraordinaire Stephen Street to help them put together their most ambitious record. From the cover artwork it should be obvious that their songwriting style had moved towards the sort of gallows balladry Nick Cave was doing around the same time. The Triffids are good at it, too.

The Triffids
Treeless Plain

Seminal Aussie group The Triffids have had a couple of their LPs reissued through PIAS, and unsurprisingly the band’s 1983 debut LP Treeless Plain is among the number. This is a florid collection that synthesises various contemporaneous strains of post-punk. Joy Division’s doomy prognoses, Durutti Column-style dreaminess, The Smiths’ 60’s-indebted indie and the energetic pop of Orange Juice all combine here. It makes for a wistful, often lovely listen. This new edition of Treeless Plain includes seven bonus tracks that The Triffids taped live for radio.

The Smiths
Meat is Murder

Never widely considered to be their best album but this is a superb effort. It contains one of their most unusual and memorable songs in 'The Headmasters Ritual', add in to that the twin rainy day melancholy ballads 'Well I Wonder' and 'That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore', the surprising funk workouts of 'Barbarism Begins At Home' and the disturbing title track and there's half a great album already. They simply redefined what pop could and should be.

Last Shadow Puppets
The Age Of Understatement

The debut Last Shadow Puppets album was probably the first time this writer suspected that there was something going on with Alex Turner other than a cheeky chappy Northern persona and moshpit-friendly tunes. Alongside long term pal Miles Kane, the duo crafted an excellent album full of '60s inspired dramatic flourishes, sweeping strings and yearning melodies.

The Kooks
Konk

Only recently we were smitten all over again by the re-issue of the Beatles 'Sergeant Pepper's'... and 2017 has even more treats in store with a vinyl re-issue of the Kooks 'Konk'. This was their second album and features such hits as  ‘Ooh La’ and  ‘Sofa Song’. Klassic Kooks - we should feel blessed.

Happy Mondays
Bummed

By the time their second album, Bummed, was made, Happy Mondays had made their loose indie-funk sound, topped with the thoughts of Shaun Ryder, their own. It was met with a lukewarm reception on its release but had the same people giving it gushing praise a decade later. We now know the band as a legendary act who were central to the Madchester scene. Features Wrote For Luck and Lazy-itis.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Kicking Against The Pricks

New vinyl reissue of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' classic all-covers album from 1986. It includes classic covers such as 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix', 'All Tomorrows Parties', 'The Singer' and 'Black Betty'. Over the years, Cave has downplayed the importance of this album, but has since admitted to its influence on the diversity of the Bad Seeds' subsequent song writing.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
The Boatman's Call

Originally released in 1997, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ album The Boatman’s Call was a move toward the more gracefully melancholic from the gloomy Antipodean from the previous Murder Ballads, with his most personal album to date. A classic for anyone who doesn't own it yet, and Nick Cave’s most critically acclaimed work.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Murder Ballads

Nick Cave and his perpetual gloomy face released Murder Ballads back in 1996 with the Bad Seeds to great critical acclaim and even commercial success. To his dismay, he was even nominated for MTV Best Male Artist of the Year, although he was withdrawn at his own behest. Also featuring Kylie Minogue, PJ Harvey and Shane Macgowan, this release also boasts four bonus tracks and four videos. CD on Mute.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
From Her To Eternity

'From Her To Eternity' was the debut record for Cave in his olden days as an ex-member of the post-punk meanies the Birthday Party and the founder of the Bad Seeds. Based around his own song-writing and contributions from co-founder Mick Harvey (who sadly didn't get his own nameplate), the record saw Cave focusing on lyricism and moments of musical reflection that weren't seen in the forthright and cruel punk attacks of the Birthday Party.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
The Good Son

A seminal album from Australia’s finest gets the reissue treatment from Mute. Recorded during Nick Cave’s loved up Brazilian period, The Good Son sees him in a chipper mood following the dark and downbeat sound on Tender Prey. Out on CD + DVD set & vinyl LP w/download code from Mute.

When The Sun Goes Down

Sensibly, Domino have been quietly re-pressing some of the Arctic Monkeys early singles for all you AM nuts out there. When the Sun Goes Down was the second single to be taken from their legendary debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. A tale of prostitution in their hometown of Sheffield, it's an early example of Alex Turner's unique lyrical prowess. On 7" backed with Stickin' To The Floor.

Radiohead
In Rainbows

Radiohead's seventh studio album In Rainbows was probably most known for its innovative pay-what-you-want digital release ahead of the physical editions. A decision which received a mixed response but had massive implications on the future of the music industry. The music was a more gentle and pastoral take their usual blend of arty rock topped off with what sounded like a cat yowling to get in from the cold. Now available on vinyl and CD and we tell you what you are paying for it so don't argue.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
The First Born Is Dead

The second record from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, back when they were working out how to reign in their creepy brand of blues rock. Recorded in Berlin in order for Cave's left-field inclinations to be taken seriously, rather than regarded with scorn, it features song-writing contributions from both Cave and his collaborator Mick Harvey, as well as a cover of "Wanted Man" by Dylan and Cash.

Modest Mouse
Sad Sappy Sucker

Originally released in 2001 but conceived in 1994, ‘Sad Sappy Sucker’ was intended for Modest Mouse’s debut LP, but delays meant the record was shelved and, essentially, it was forgotten about until its subsequent release seven years later. All the original 12 songs recorded during the Dub Narcotic Studio session are here, including the incredibly rare ‘Worms Vs. Birds’ 7”. Also included here is bonus material featuring nine songs from lead singer Isaac Brock’s project ‘Dial-a-Song’, which are basically songs that could only be heard on his answering machine every day by calling in.

Babyshambles
Shotter's Nation

Shotter's Nation was the second album from never knowingly not wasted the Libertines co-frontman Pete 'Peter' Doherty under his Babyshambles moniker. It sees him collaborating with an unfathomably eclectic bunch of artists such as Kate Moss, Ian Brown and Bert Jansch and this is probably the only time you'll see those three in the same sentence. Not exactly the pinnacle of recorded music but at least he's alive I suppose.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Give It Back!

Ah what would we do without the Brian Jonestown Massacre. We'd have two or three fewer records to sell per week that's what we'd do. The latest is a re-issue of their 1997 record Give it Back. This is the one they were working on around the time Dig! was filmed ("man, you broke my Sitar!"). It also is the only BJM album to feature future the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club member Peter Hayes.

Editors
The End Has A Start

The End Has A Start is the sophomore LP from Joy Division revivalists Editors. After the underground success of 2005’s The Back Room, this is the record on which the Brummie band made a play for the big leagues. They put meat on the bones of their sinewy post-punk style with the anthemic tones of Echo & The Bunnymen and Bloc Party. It worked, too - The End Has A Start hit number 1 in the album chart and produced the top 10 single ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’. This new edition features a bonus track on the CD.

Reuben
In Nothing We Trust

The final LP from Reuben gets a reissue courtesy of Big Scary Monsters. In Nothing We Trust is for-par stuff from the Surrey band. Screamo, post-hardcore, Brit-grunge - whatever you want to call it, it’s still getting heavy rotation on Kerrang! Radio. A pre-dreadfulness Frank Turner is one of the guest vocalists on In Nothing We Trust.
