Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Tender Prey

If you were only ever to own one Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album, 1988’s ‘Tender Prey’ might be the one to get. It has ‘The Mercy Seat’ on it, the defining statement of his early career and a peerless piece of modern songcraft; songs like ‘Deanna’ and ‘City Of Refuge’ are perhaps the finest examples of the deranged Elvis-preacher shtick Cave was on in the late 80s; with hindsight we can now see ‘Watching Alice’ as the first flush of the more abstract and impressionist style of songwriting Cave et al have been serving up in recent years. The record also kick-started a decade-long run in which Cave made classic album after classic album. Essential copage.

Oasis
Dig Out Your Soul

All good things have to come to an end and it was probably the best thing for everyone when Oasis were put to sleep in 2005. They had one last hurrah with Dig Out Your Soul which saw other band members take songwriting credits as Noel Gallagher's once potent pen dried up. It's more groove-driven than previous work and there was some spark that was lacking in previous work but it was still a long way from the energy and raw vitality of Definitely Maybe.

Fugazi
End Hits

Fugazi are a band that lots of people tell me I should listen to more. These are the same people who warn that I probably shouldn’t start with 1998’s ‘End Hits’, because this LP is one of the legendary post-hardcore group’s more esoteric offerings, touching as it does on art-rock and various experimental fringes. However, these same people also tell me that, once I’ve got my head around ‘Repeater’ and ‘In on the Kill Taker’ and what have you, 'End Hits' may actually be the one that I end up liking most. Maybe you will too!

Violent Femmes
Hallowed Ground

Following up a classic like the Violent Femmes debut was always going to be a big ask. However, Gordon Gano had saved some classics for Hallowed Ground, such as Country Death Song, which he wrote in 10th Grade. Gano did use Hollowed Ground to display some of his Christian beliefs, lyrically taking the band in a different direction.

TV On The Radio
Young Liars

We all remember where were were when we first heard TV On The Radio, right? Well this Norman Records Description Writer (tm) was actually working at Norman Records old Armley office when we were all blown away by this EP. The band mixed innovative pop with electronica and dub and appeared to have Peter Gabriel on vocals. I'll still maintain this was their best release and *that* acapella Pixies cover is just inspired.

The White Stripes
White Blood Cells

White Blood Cells was the third album by brother/sister duo (whaaaat? hang on...no) ok from ex couple duo Jack and Meg White as the White Stripes. After their two previous albums started making waves across the sweaty clubs of the UK this was the first one to really break through and features such future classics as Hotel Yorba and Fell In Love With A Girl. Still sounding as fresh as a daisy, it's a further reminder that Jack White's music was so much better when constricted by Meg's rudimentary but intuitive drumming.

Giant Sand
proVISIONS

proVISIONS is Giant Sand’ 2008 record, reissued now by the Fire label. As well as main Sandman Howe Gelb, this double-disc collection also features vocal assistance from Neko Case, M Ward and Isobel Campbell, while PJ Harvey finds her ‘The Desperate Kingdom Of Love’ covered. Desert-music with plenty of atmosphere.
