Mark Lanegan Band
Somebody's Knocking

Somebody’s Knocking is the eleventh solo album by ex-Screaming Trees frontman, Mark Lanegan. Lanegan says that Joy Division, The Stooges, Love and, perhaps surprisingly, New Order have all influenced this album. Despite having always been a fan of electronic music, the sounds are now making their way into his otherwise fags-and-whiskey-drenched gruff rock sound as it’s what he listens to most these days.

The Yummy Fur
Piggy Wings

Released on Mogwai’s Rock Action label, Piggy Wings is a 14-track career highlights compilation from the beloved Glaswegian indie act The Yummy Fur, favourites of the late John Peel. Active between 1992 and 1999 and fronted by Jackie McKeown, its line-up included three future members of Franz Ferdinand.

Patrick Watson
Wave

Wave is the sixth album by Canadian singer / songwriter Patrick Watson and first in four years. Wave is an album about loss and how quickly it can happen and how devastating that loss can be - as if being hit by a wave that wipes everything out. This subject is threaded through the album due Watson’s personal circumstances at the time - the death of his mother, the end of a relationship and his drummer leaving the band.

Corridor
Junior

According to the press release the third album from Quebec's Corridor was recorded yesterday which means it's still as fresh and vital as a brand new tub of humous. Sub Pop got so excited by it that they released it a day after which is good going. It may be bang up to date but their sound is timeless, a mixture of guitar burn and jangle, some post-punk, some psych, lots of fun. What did you do yesterday? Corridor made an album and we'd better get on it before time runs out.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Bravery, Repetition and Noise

One of the BJM's best! Featuring a handful of songs that have become firm fan favourites down the years ('Telegram', 'Nevertheless', 'Sailor') and another handful that deserve wider acclaim ('Just For Today', the haunting 'Leave Nothing For Sancho') this was first released in 2001 and has now been reissued on vinyl (for the first time) on Anton's own 'a' records imprint.

black midi
Schlagenheim

black midi are one of the most exciting acts to come out of...um....we presume London in some time. Signed to Rough Trade and fond of creating a enigmatic image,  this is their much anticipated debut. We at least have their names now (there's at last one double-barrelled in there) and we've been given the slither of info that this was recorded with Speedy Wunderground's Dan Carey. Could be one of the year's biggest new things.

Xylouris White
The Sisypheans

Australian drummer Jim White and and Cretan laouto player George Xylouris have known each other since the early ‘90s when Jim White played in Dirty Three with the Bad Seeds Warren Ellis. They have collaborated several times before. The Sisypheans is the duo’s fourth album, the concept of which came from conversations the pair have had over the past 5 years.

Sophia
The Valentine's Day Session

Sophia is the project of Robin Proper-Sheppard, previously of The God Machine, along with a revolving cast of collaborators. The Valentine’s Day Session was originally released as a bonus CD with Sophia’s seventh album, There Are No Goodbyes, in 2009. Now it gets its own release on glorious red vinyl. RIYL Red House Painters, Low, The God Machine.

Sophia
De Nachten

Though great on record, it is perhaps best to catch Sophia live to get a full dose of their emotional slow moving compositions. They rarely play shows so this blue coloured vinyl re-issue of their 2001 era live album is most welcome. It was recorded at various festivals across Europe and includes a bleak cover of John Lennon's Jealous Guy.

Sunset Sons
Blood Rush Déjà Vu

Blood Rush Déjà Vu is the second studio album from French-based Anglo-Australian indie trio Sunset Suns, released off the back of an impressive three years of continuous building. Their 2016 debut Very Rarely Say Die saw them tour in support of Imagine Dragons and Nothing But Thieves, a learning curve that saw them nominated for AIM’s Best Live Act.

Half Moon Run
A Blemish In The Great Light

A Blemish In The Great Light is the third album by Canadian band, Half Moon Run. They hit the bullseye when two tracks from their first album, Dark Eyes, were playlisted on BBC Radio 1. Constant touring and hard work has seen the Montreal band, who’ve been described as indie-rock, alt-folk and alt-pop, grow in stature.

Queens Of The Stone Age
Lullabies To Paralyze

Queens Of The Stone Age have been making their rambunctious tuneful desert rock for nearly twenty years. Lullabies To Paralyze was their third album originally released in 2005 and has guest spots from the likes of Jack Black, Shirley Manson and most aptly of all a ZZ Top Gibbons. This is a luxury re-issue in gatefold sleeve and comes with three bonus tracks.

Queens Of The Stone Age
Rated R

A vinyl re-issue for Rated R, an album that’s still arguably the creative high-point for Josh Homme’s Queens Of The Stone Age. Originally released in 2000, the album was a sleek and streamlined behemoth teeming with creativity after the mixed bag of their self-titled debut two years before. Spawning timeless hits ‘Feel Good Hit of the Summer’ and ‘The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret’, Rated R is re-pressed with its original blue artwork, with a 12”x24” insert and international bonus track ‘Ode To Clarissa’.

Bad//Dreems
Doomsday Ballet

Bad//Dreams are a four-piece band from Adelaide who have a loose new wave-cum-rock ‘n’ roll sound influenced by ‘70s Australian bands such as Coloured Balls and US bands such as Devo, Television and Wipers. Doomsday Ballet is their third album, the follow up to 2017’s Gutful.

Working Men's Club
Bad Blood / Suburban Heights

Working Men’s Club are three-piece who take the angular sound of Talking Heads, Gang of Four and Television and round off the corners with inspiration from Parquet Courts and The Strokes. Their band name was inspired by where they grew up and their attempts to get into pubs and working men’s clubs as that was the only entertainment around. The band met in Manchester but hail from Yorkshire via Poland and Italy.

Elbow
Giants of All Sizes

I like them tall giants, I like them small giants, I like them brown-haired giants, I like them blonde-haired giants… Unfortunately Giants Of All Sizes, the latest LP from stadium-bothering Mancunians Elbow, doesn’t actually include a cover of Calvin Harris’ ‘The Girls’. Shame, that. What the band’s eighth album does contain is more of that brooding, baroque rock music that Guy Garvey et al do so well. Think of them as Northern England’s answer to The National.

The Wha
Innocents

The Wha are a new indie band from Kilkenny in Ireland. Their sound seemingly comes from a love of The Jam and Elvis Costello with nods to more recent bands such as The Strokes and The Vaccines. Innocents is their debut single which you may catch them playing on tour in support of Fur and Two Door Cinema Club.

Bodega
Shiny New Model

Brooklyn quintet Bodega (and not the Nottingham venue of the same name) have announced a mini-album titled 'Shiny New Model'. It features eight songs of big grooves and wistful melodies. FFO Parquet Courts, Shame, and Idles. What is a mini-album anyway? Where is the line? Is it just an EP? Answers on a postcard.

Ezra Furman
Twelve Nudes

Ezra Furman, whilst always sounding like Ezra Furman, tends to dabble in different rock sub-genres. With new album Twelve Nudes, he claims it is a punk record. He hurt his throat through singing so hard whilst making it, so there is blood on the tracks here. It was recorded in Oakland, CA under the influence of booze and cigarettes. The title refers to the songs on the album being there with nothing to hide.

Bodega
Witness Scroll

Bodega - the band everyone is saying sound like Parquet Courts before Parquet Courts became a bit less Parquet Courts - drop a live LP. Witness Scroll features recordings culled from gigs in Glasgow and London back in May 2018. You’ll be familiar with most of the tunes here if you dug the band’s recent Endless Scroll album. However, new cut ‘No Vanguard Revival’ and an updated version of Bodega Bay oldie ‘Stain Glaze’ should satisfy your craving for fresh meat. Most of the Witness Scroll vinyl are clear, but there's also a chance that you'll get one of the special glow-in-the-dark editions which have been sent out at random. Lucky dip!

If Not, When?

Oh dear lord don't. I assume they pronounce this Bedroom. If one more band or artist does this I'm going to scream the house down. It may come as no surprise that this Hull five piece are influenced by DIIV and THCRE (the Cure). This debut 10" on the always collectible Sonic Cathedral contains tracks from three of their self-released singles plus you get the Jewson lot of what they've done so far on the digital. Allah-Las
LAHS

After a solo run out under the name Paint, Pedrum Siadatian returns to the womb that bore him, i.e. Allah-Lahs. LAHS is the band’s fourth album. There’s a palpable togetherness about this album, but their sun-bleached melodies and soft psychedelia remain at their core. On Mexican Summer.

girl in red
Beginnings

Starting life as a bedroom project only last year, 20 year old Norwegian artist Marie Ulven has taken her girl in red music an awfully long way in a very short time. Both melodic and abrasive, 'Beginnings' showcases nine of her best songs so far, including the morbidly hilarious 'dead girl in the pool'.

Love Fame Tragedy
I Don't Want To Play The Victim, But I'm Really Good At It

Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, lead singer of obnoxious Noughties indie trio The Wombats, presents his first solo offering under the name Love Fame Tragedy. A 10” EP consisting of four (actually pretty good) songs, I Don't Want To Play The Victim, But I'm Really Good At It will likely change some perspectives.

Cornelius
Point

Point was the fourth album by excellent Japanese musician Cornelius and was the follow up to his breakthrough album Fantasma. It has become something of an influential record over the years with its technicolour palette of sounds infusing records by the likes of Beck, Phoenix and the Strokes. Now is the time for the luxury re-issue which includes three previously unheard remixes.

Richard Hawley
Truelove's Gutter

Truelove's Gutter was the sixth studio album from Sheffield's best '50s throwback Richard Hawley. After two albums of more fully arranged compositions, Hawley stripped things back for perhaps his darkest and most ambient sounding work to date. It's a slow burner with some truly transcendental moments. If For Your Lover Give Some Time doesn't make you weep real tears then nothing will.

Richard Hawley
Standing at the Sky’s Edge

For those of us used to Richard Hawley as a hushed and romantic '50s style crooner, Standing at the Sky’s Edge was somewhat of a shock to the system. It dispensed with all the yearning orchestration on an album that follows the two guitars, bass and drums sound of many an indie band. It had guitar solos and elements of cosmic psychedelia and space rock yet look hard enough and the tender lyricism still remains.

Built To Spill
Ancient Melodies Of The Future

Some sauntering songs about all sorts from Built To Spill. Ancient Melodies Of The Future is the 2001 classic from the Idahoans and it's getting reissued just for you. It's full of slacked out guitars, loose and groovy drums and Doug Martsch's trade mark drawling croon. If you like their other stuff, Modest Mouse, The Pixies, The Decemberists and all things indie-rock then pick it up, it will not disappoint. Out on vinyl LP from Music On Vinyl.

Richard Hawley
Hollow Meadows

Sheffield’s favourite classic-style rock singer-songwriter Richard Hawley returns to your stereos with Hollow Meadows, album number eight in his oeuvre. Hawley broods and ponders on mature subject matter, backed by arrangements both richly orchestral and grittily direct (especially when Hawley’s guitar solos come into play).

Oh Sees
Face Stabber

Some things are always true.  You're always less than 6 months away from a John Dwyer release. That release will be by a band using a variant on Oh Sees as its name. Dwyer will have recorded some of that album wearing jean shorts that stop below the knee. And the songs that fill that release will be high intensity fuzzy garage rock.  This album is called Face Stabber.

Thee Oh Sees
Dog Poison

Dog Poison was the third album to be written under Thee Oh Sees moniker and was originally released in 2009 on the fledgling Captured Tracks. It appears from the liner notes that lead Oh See John Dwyer does most things on this album which even then was finding new ways to keep their garage rock template fresh injecting more textures and layers than their earlier scuzz racket.

Comet Gain
Fireraisers, Forever!

Fireraisers, Forever! Is the new album from Comet Gain. Seemingly, they are harking back to the Charlie Brooker/Chris Morris sitcom, Nathan Barley, bemoaning the rise of the idiot. They are the latest in a long line of artists to speak out about the current state of the world. It’s a bit more spiky than their previous album, 2014’s Paperback Ghosts.

Siouxsie and The Banshees
Kaleidoscope

Ah this is the classic one isn't it? The first with ‘Budgie’ on drums and  John McGeoch on guitar who would both play a part in transforming the Banshees sound. It contains two of their excellent breakthrough hits Happy House and Christine and is a more rounded and vibrant Banshees sound than ever. Now re-issued cut from the original tapes.

The Strokes
Is This It

The Strokes’ dynamic 2001 debut Is This It, with hard-to-resist faves like Last Nite and Someday which helped the growly Julian Casablancas and co. wedge themselves firmly into the indie rock canon. The New Yorkers’ kickstarter for the 2000s indie scene, available on regular LP from Rough Trade or a limited audiophile version on Music On Vinyl.

Pip Blom
Boat

Pip Blom are an indie band from Amsterdam. They are fronted by 20-year old Pip Blom.  Boat is their debut album following a successful year of EPs and singles that have enjoyed airtime on BBC 6 Music. Their influences seem to come from bands such as The Breeders, which is no bad thing. It looks like Pip’s star is on the rise.

Pavement
Terror Twilight

Terror Twilight was the final album by US indie slackers Pavement and was a much more crafted and produced album than earlier efforts. Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich tried to discipline the notoriously loose band which led to tensions between band and producer. The result is a mixed affair sometimes wistful sometimes wilfully obscure but appears more forced that earlier records and is allegedly not one of Stephen Malkmus's favourites. Still, it showcases a next level move for the band before they finally (and it seems terminally) called it a day.

Radiohead
The Bends

'The Bends' was Radiohead's second LP and the one that marked a sea change from their early grungy rock towards the more nuanced arty and sometimes abrasive music they make today. It features several of their more well known songs such as 'Fake Plastic Trees' and 'Street Spirit' and it's more synth led, experimental tone slowly points forward to future classics such as 'OK Computer' and 'Kid A'.

Purple Mountains
All My Happiness is Gone

David Berman, the man behind the Silver Jews, has been rather quiet since disbanding the band a decade ago. He has recorded some new music under the name Purple Mountains, but it seems he’s still keeping it rather quiet. All we know about this has come from Pavement and Silver Jews sideman Bob Nastanovich. The new music comes in the form of a 12” single called All My Happiness Is Gone.

The Telescopes
Taste (30 Anniversary Edition)

30th anniversary re-issue album on translucent purple vinyl of Taste, the quietly innovative 1989 debut album from British space rock act The Telescopes. W. H. Lung
Incidental Music

Emerging out of Manchester, W.H. Lung are a primarily studio-based project making music that between shimmering synth pop and infectious kraut rock. Theirs is a sound that encompasses parts of Talking Heads, BEAK and Cavern of Anti-Matter for a raucous and inspiring groove-ridden sound. The Dinked people love them therefore they get their own Dinked Edition (whilst stocks last). That name? It's a Chinese supermarket in Manchester. Of course!

Doves
Lost Souls

Doves were of course once Sub Sub who had an enormous hit with *that* song 'Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)' but in a twist in the usual guitar band picks up synths career pattern put down their 303s and picked up guitars to become a decent big league emotional rock act as Doves. This is their debut now re-pressed onto grey coloured 180g vinyl.

Nirvana
In Utero

Nirvana’s In Utero, the album that famously followed Nevermind with a more caustic, cutting sound. Pretty emotionally and sonically heavy, particularly for a record that reached number one in the US. Includes "Heart-Shaped Box", "Rape Me", and the title track, which is essentially designed to be poppy enough to entice listeners into the abrasive depths of the record. Reissued on vinyl by Back To Black.

Nirvana
MTV Unplugged In New York

It was quite the moment when the hitherto loud and raucous Nirvana calmed down enough to perform an acoustic set for MTVs Unplugged series. The performance was a revelation, taking in highlights from their back catalogue plus covers of David Bowie and Meat Puppets. It was a crying shame that we never got to see how the band would progress but at least we were left with this superb document.

Starcrawler
Devour You

Starcrawler’s well received self-titled debut, showed a band starting out and perhaps didn’t capture what the band really do. For their second album, Devour You, they’ve hired producer Nick Launay, who has worked with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, L7 and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. He was able to capture the essence of their live shows, albeit without making anyone bleed or breaking anyone's fingers, and help the band make a follow-up with a harder edge.

Sonic Youth
Evol

Sonic Youth’s Evol is their third album from 1986 and as the title may hint towards, Evol is the album which sees Sonic Youth evolve into a rockier sound which always reminds me a bit of The Doors, as the sound swells from crashing guitar into murky drums effortlessly. Available on vinyl or CD. CD comes with an additional track which also comes with the vinyl’s download code.

Sonic Youth
Sister

Goofin’ records repress Sonic Youth’s art-rock masterwork Sister, and they’ve even included a download with the vinyl LP. On their fifth album the band’s dissonant no-wave drones are as heavy as ever, but they’re tied to sharper songwriting and thoughtful band dynamics.

Pixies
Doolittle

Second album from alternative rock stalwarts, Pixies. Doolittle is like when you see something disgusting, and you’re brain can’t quite decide if you want to keep looking at it and show it to everyone you know, or shut your eyes and hope it goes away. Surreal, catchy, dirty, noisy and really, really good.

Arcade Fire
Funeral

They used to actually be a phenomenal band and Funeral is all the proof you need. Full of gang chants and guitar twitches, big band fever and Springsteen suburbia, the Arcade Fire made a hopeful and triumphant rock record that fully deserved to be loud. With a handful of indie rock's best tunes on it, it traversed a whole lot of death and even a bit of romance -- "Crown of Love" is still their best, most heartfelt moment.

Kevin Morby
Oh My God

After four albums and countless tours, songwriting ace Kevin Morby releases what he says is his most realised record yet. He recognises that the work has a religious theme though Morby isn't himself religious. It may be a more spiritual thing he has going on I guess. Anyway it's a double album opus written whilst away on tour plans and in hotels or whenever he got a minute to himself.

Kim Gordon
No Home Record

A new solo record from the icon(oclast)ic Kim Gordon, co-founder of Sonic Youth and an acclaimed solo artist since their demise. No Home Record is preoccupied with the feelings of transience and displacement - both physical and spiritual - that go hand-in-hand with modern existence, and consists of nine tracks of exploratory alternative rock.

Lucy Dacus
2019

2019 captures seven one-off songs that Lucy Dacus has recorded and released throughout the year, tied to specific holidays, under the umbrella of one EP. Dacus originals like ‘My Mother & I’ appear alongside cover versions of classics - Springsteen’s ‘Dancing In The Dark’ and Édith Piaf’s ‘La Vie En Rose’ being the best.

Big Thief
Two Hands

"I have two hands" - the words of synth wizard Viv Savage. Big Thief are the latest band to do that 'record two albums at the same time' thing  - see also Beach House. So if you bought this years U.F.O.F and are still enjoying it then you can move seemlessly into its sister album. Basically it seems where U.F.O.F was wet then Two Hands is dry both in the weather conditions at recording time and in the sound produced. Here the songs were recorded live with few overdubs as the band showcased their latest batch of songs with a no frills, bone dry approach.

Carnavas

Dangerbird re-issues the first four releases from L.A. alternative rockers Silversun Pickups. Their debut album Carnavas, which housed their break-out hit ‘Lazy Eye’, was originally released in 2006. Now, it’s the subject of a gorgeous re-packaging, coming as a double marbled-brown vinyl.

Ty Segall
Melted

Known to release a new album each mealtime, Ty Segall is now filling in the gaps between meals by re-issuing his old ones. Melted was his third album from way back in those heady days we knew as 2010 and was made in collaboration with Sic Alps Mike Donovan. It's a blast of short and sharp garage rock with trademark lo-fi amp buzz and songs with a glam rock catchiness and a psych rock sensibility. Lots of rock fun as always and still fresh as a daisy.

Juliana Hatfield
Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police

American cult icon Juliana Hatfield continues her planned series of cover albums of artists that had a formative influence on her in her youth, with this 12-track tribute to The Police. While they’ve often been unfashionable, Sting’s former outfit wrote songs of great thoughtfulness and humanity, elements which Hatfield brings out with her own style on Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police.

Angel Olsen
All Mirrors

On her fourth album, All Mirrors, Angel Olsen shows us her darkest side. Its introspective nature was an important step for Olsen. Through its brooding tones and lyrics she tells us about learning to trust yourself and move on, find peace in your own company. Valuable lessons, perhaps. On Jagjaguwar.

Arab Strap
The Week Never Starts Round Here

Hold up -- it's Arab Strap's first ever record. Without any of the reservations and noble ideas the band would go on to incorporate, The Week Never Starts Round Here sees the band offer fourteen tracks of more innocuous alt rock that still betrays their sensibilities for post-rock and instrumental experimentation.

Dan Luke and The Raid
Out Of The Blue

Out Of The Blue is the debut album by American indie rockers, Dan Luke & The Raid. Luke says the album concentrates on that transition period in your twenties when you realise you need to grow up. Musically it land somewhere between The Dandy Warhols and The Shins and a bunch of other bands of that ilk.
  • Genre(s):

MNNQNS
Body Negative

Adrian D’Epinay, lead singer of French experimental rock act MNNQNS, was inspired for the band’s debut album by spending some time in Cardiff. The hybridisation of cultures that he experienced is made clear on Body Negative, an album that defies easy categorisation by its attempts to squeeze so many ideas into its 13 tracks.

Heavy Lungs
Measure

Heavy Lungs were given a helping hand by fellow Bristolians Idles when they released a split single together. Heavy Lungs are fronted by the one and only Danny Nedelko, so really Heavy Lungs gave Idles a helping hand first. It’s a chicken/egg situation I guess. Anyway, here we have a 5-track EP by Heavy Lungs all on their own. It’s called measure and is released via Balley Records which is owned by Idles' Joe Talbot.

The Wedding Present
George Best

The ever-prolific pioneers of UK indie, The Wedding Present, are embarking on an extensive reissue campaign, releasing five albums, two compilations and an EP from the band’s ‘80s and 90’s output, all of which are expanded multi-disc sets crammed with bonus material, extensive sleeve notes, art work and general Weddos emphemera. Most synonymous for their familiar depiction of relationships using acerbic wit, frontman David Gedge is a virtuoso when it comes to the bittersweet love song. Originally released in 1987, ‘George Best’ was the anticipated debut album by The Wedding Present, and saw the band do what they do best: create perfectly primitive, high-energy guitar-pop music about love and heartbreak. Lyrically some of Gedge’s most simple but much-loved songs; ‘George Best’ helped to create the Wedding Present’s definitive nuanced sound, and maintained their status as pillars of jangle pop.

Tommy

The ever-prolific pioneers of UK indie, The Wedding Present, are embarking on an extensive reissue campaign, releasing five albums, two compilations and an EP from the band’s ‘80s and 90’s output, all of which are expanded multi-disc sets crammed with bonus material, extensive sleeve notes, art work and general Weddos ephemera. Most synonymous for their familiar depiction of relationships using acerbic wit, frontman David Gedge is a virtuoso when it comes to the bittersweet love song. Originally released in 1988, 'Tommy' is a compilation that gathers the first four singles of The Wedding Present, a long with their B-sides and selected tracks from two early radio sessions, providing a comprehensive overview of the band's familiarly fast-paced, lo-fi output prior to their debut LP 'George Best' in 1987.

Kurt Vile
Childish Prodigy (10th Anniversary Edition)

Matador re-releases Kurt Vile’s 2009 album Childish Prodigy on light-blue coloured vinyl to mark its 10th anniversary. It was the third solo record from Vile in a little under two years, released around a year after he had quit The War On Drugs (that band’s lead singer, Adam Granduciel, was still a key member of Vile’s backing band The Violators) and the point at which his career really began to pick up momentum. Includes a purple 7” single of ‘He’s Alright’, originally hidden away as a bonus track on the CD.

Enter Shikari
Common Dreads

Enter Shikari were massively hyped when they emerged in the mid-2000s under the ‘Screamo’ banner. Their concerts were chaotic and the kids seemed to love ‘em. The politically charged Common Dreads was the band’s second album, originally released in 2009. Ten years on, with a lot of pressure from fans, they have decided to repress the album in vinyl, and why not, as the band seem to go from strength to strength.

Mermaidens
Look Me In The Eye

Perfect Body (thanks!) Mermaidens debut made more than a few ripples on the circuit following its release on legendary New Zealand label Flying Nun. Now it's time for album number two from the Wellington trio and in Look Me In The Eye they continue their dissection of guitar music with an exhilarating and thought provoking ride heavy on female harmony and powerful dynamics.

Girl Band
Shoulderblades

Girl Band are part of that esteemed pantheon of musicians who contrary to their name, feature no girls. They are defintiely a band mind, quite a loud one too. Years ago they burst onto my radar with an inexplicable of Blawan's 'Why They Hide..' that left me winded for weeks. Shoulderblades anticipates their second album and is a noisy old affair.

Emily Capell
Combat Rock

London-based songwriter Emily Capell is massively influenced by Joe Strummer. Strummer is the reason she makes music, which is probably the reason she’s called her debut album Combat Rock. Along with The obvious influence of The Clash, Capell’s music is also influenced by her love of Johnny Cash, The Smiths, Mods in general and the Top 40, making her sound an eclectic blend of blues, indie, punk and pop.

The Smiths
Louder Than Bombs

Louder Than Bombs was the American counterpart to The World Won't Listen compilation in that it compiled all the Smiths non album tracks that hadn't been available on single or album in the US. Therefore it is a treasure trove of the lesser known part of their back catalogue with well known hits interspersed with rarely heard B sides. Brilliant throughout despite the singer's subsequent attempts at ruining everything.

William DuVall
One Alone

William DuVall is of course the be-shaded singer in none other than grunge legends Alice In Chains. Here, he creates a bona fide solo album in that it comprises of just DuVall's acoustic guitar and voice, stripping off all the ephemera and nuts and bolts to leave the listener with the singer's true honest vision. Comparisons have already been made to Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley so regardless of what you think of his parent group, this could be a career swerve to keep an eye on.

Black Country, New Road
Sunglasses

You’d be forgiven for mistaking the band name Black Country, New Road as a band’s album title, but I can assure you in this modern world where bands can be called anything from We Were Promised Jetpacks to I Shot My Horse or whatever, that this is their name. 'Sunglasses' is the London rock band’s second single and on Blank Editions.

The New Pornographers
In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights

In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights is the eighth album from these classic pop people from Canada. Working as a collective around leader and songwriter A C Newman they also include star-in-her-own-right Neko Case and have so far produced a slew of albums of melodic power-pop and indie rock. Expect thoughtful compositions and emotional lyrical concerns about the mess we are all in.

Radiohead
Kid A

Kid A is still Radiohead's most challenging album and the furthest they've headed into electronic textures but it's all the better for it. The band channelled the sounds they were hearing on records by the likes of Autechre and applied them to their own sound. Such a different beast from OK Computer but a very innovative and important record.

Fu Manchu
King Of The Road

Available on double vinyl LP on At the Dojo. Reissue of Fu Manchu’s sixth studio album that was originally released in 1999. If unfamiliar with the manchu, imagine Kyuss leaving their desert dwellings, taking a shot of whiskey. It’s stoner rock with them readdressing the sex and rock ‘n’ roll ratio.

The Moonlandingz
Interplanetary Class Classics

The Moonlandingz are a kerrrazy side-project band, comprised of two members each from Fat White Family and Eccentronic Research Council. Oh, and members of The Village People and Yoko Ono also feature. Debut Interplanetary Class Classics is a messy electro-indie-punk pile-up with its tongue in its cheek. Out on Transgressive.

Pulp
His 'n' Hers (25th Anniversary Edition)

As a celebration of Pulp's salt-of-the-earth DIY pop, the 1994 released hit record 'His 'n' Hers' is re-issued with extra audio quality. As the band's fourth album, and one which will always be remembered as their breakthrough, sexual encounters, social class and voyeurism are all covered with a heavy dose of Jarvis Cocker's dry wit.

The Distillers
Coral Fang

Full of scathing attitude and razor-sharp hooks, Coral Fang was the major-label debut for Brody Dalle’s sometimes-forgotten band The Distillers in 2003, winning them a whole new fanbase and delivering them their first proper hits. Sadly, it all went downhill for the group afterwards as they split in 2006.

She Drew The Gun
Revolution Of Mind

Big new album from Louisa Roach who uses the moniker She Drew the Gun to write songs that have a lineage in some of the great scouse bands of the past. The La's, the Coral are cited as influences but Roach brings a feminist queer-friendly energy to proceedings and is a new and unique name to add to Liverpool's rich history.

Ty Segall
Pig Man Lives, Volume 1: Demos 2007-2017

If Ty Segall hasn't released enough music already then it's now time for the 4LP demos retrospective. This collection contains 47 sketches that became albums such as Manipulator and Freedom Goblin and is sequenced randomly so you fly back and forth in time. Seriously he's going to bankrupt his loyal fanbase at this rate.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Push The Sky Away

You've heard him repeatedly on Peaky Blinders so if you haven't already caught up with Nick Cave's sixteen or so studio albums with his Bad Seeds then there's no time like the present. Push the Sky Away was his 2013 album which showed that time had withered none of his songwriting and arrangement skills. It's a slow moving record of stripped down songs and heartfelt paeans somewhat at odds perhaps with the more brutal landscapes of his records earlier in the decade but showcasing the more introspective side of his oeuvre.

Pete Astor and the Holy Road
Paradise

Here is a re-issue of Pete Astor's third solo album following on from his stints in indie-pop legends the Loft and the Weather Prophets. It sees Astor gather around him some of the finest UK musicians for some classic English guitar pop that was predictably ignored in his home country but did very well indeed in France.

Fleetwood Mac
Tusk

Listen will you...seriously. Tusk is one of the greatest albums ever made. It was the much anticipated follow up to the zillion selling Rumours and was the moment that Fleetwood Mac decided it would be time for the over long double LP. But it kind of needs to be long for all the moods and emotions it attempts to get through. From gorgeous soft rock ballads to Lindsey Buckingham's off the wall power pop, Tusk has everything...including marching bands and most importantly a dog on the sleeve.

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Mother’s Milk

Universal offer up a vinyl reissue of The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ fourth album Mother’s Milk. Before releasing the album the band tragically lost their singer and then drummer. The new line-up, including John Frusciante, crafted the distinctive blend of funk, rock and rap we know today, but this release still has the punk attitude of the earlier group as well.

The La's
BBC In Session

Imagine if someone could find some new material from the La's? The world would explode. Instead we have to be content with the same set of songs played slightly differently in ancient sessions and recordings. Originally released in 2006, this is a collection of the band's performances on radio shows hosted by the likes of Janice Long, Liz Kershaw, Bob Harris, and Nicky Campbell.

Bloc Party
Silent Alarm

It's hard to recall sometimes given their recent, flailing output but Bloc Party were quite the incendiary band back in the day. Their debut Silent Alarm showcased their tight, energetic sound which married propulsive indie-rock to danceable rhythms. A large slab of credit must go to drummer Matt Tong whose rampant playing propelled the songs along at breakneck speed. They never quite hit these dizzy heights again so if you only buy one Bloc Party LP make it this one.

Suggested Friends
Turtle Taxi

Oh God now we get bands named after phrases we see on the internet every day.  Suggested Friends are a DIY, queer-punk band out of deepest Norfolk who blend their lo-fi credentials with a tongue-in-cheek take on big 80s rock. They self-identify as the sweet spot between Weezer and Abba ...two awful bands I hope you'll agree. Doesn't bode well but maybe they will cancel each other out. The appearance of Emma Kupa (Mammoth Penguins etc) suggests it will be better than all that and that they will be coming to Indietracks in 2020. Mark my words.

Boygenius
Boygenius EP

Matador hosts the debut EP by feels-core radio rock supergroup trio Boygenius, consisting of songwriters Julien Baker (also of Forrister and The Star Killers), Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. All three musicians hot-swap confessional lead songwriting and vocal duties throughout, lending some varied perspectives and style.

Iguana Death Cult
Nude Casino

Since the chaos of their 2017 debut album The First Stirrings of Hideous Insect Life, Dutch garage punks Iguana Death Cult have earned themselves a reputation as a must-see live act. Nude Casino seeks to underline that reputation, infusing their glorious racket with elements of psychedelia and post-punk.

Skint & Demoralised
We Are Humans

Wakefield’s Skint & Demoralised - a vehicle for the spoken-word art of frontman Matt Abbott - gears up for its first album release in six years, and the current febrile state of Brexit-paralysed Britain has been needing it! We Are Humans works because it focusses on humanity, not anger, seeking to unite rather than divide further. Presented on white vinyl via Fierce Panda.

The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die
Assorted Works

I could fill up my word quotient just by repeating the band name. This is a twenty track resume of the long-windedly titled outfit's rarities collected from their ten years of existence. Compilation tracks, split singles, outtakes that type of thing. Um... An interim retrospective album then from The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die.

Great Grandpa
Four of Arrows

Representing the concept of rest in the Wildwood tarot deck, Four of Arrows is the keenly anticipated sophomore effort from Seattle indie act Great Grandpa. Compared to their debut record Plastic Cough a couple of years back, this record is a reflection of the introspection and maturity that geographical relocation has afforded the band.

Slow Crush
Ease (Deluxe Edition)

With their debut album Aurora doing splendid business and with the band touring the US and Europe this year, the Holy Roar imprint re-issues Ease, the four-track 2017 EP from punk newcomers Slow Crush, bundled up with the Part Time Punks live session the group recorded in Los Angeles in April this year.

Purple Mountains
Purple Mountains

Here it is then. Purple Mountains. The new name for David Berman. The new name for Silver Jews. This is his first music in ten years and the loss of his voice has been sad for indie rock. We are promised hand crafted country rock full of wit and wisdom and his most bare record to date. Good to have the old bugger back.
